TomTom Map Question - Folder Location - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

I just got another Tom Tom Map. I had a previous one that was given as a free download. I placed the new map in the same folder. But when I start Tom Tom and go to change maps I do not see it. All I see is the original map. Where exactly should I be placing this new map? What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Anyone Anyone?

Hi there,
Place each indvidual map folder under My Documents on Storage card. Each map must have its own folder eg. IBERIA, SOUTHERN AFRICA, etc etc. Then TomTom will pick up the new map.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
MAC

I have had both TomTom 6 & 7 running on my Kaiser and in both cases the maps were stored in folders off the root on the storage card - e.g \United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_Vxxx.xxxx\

what i did is i actually just loaded the Map folder to my Storage card. clicked and dragged and it works like a charm. also when i set up my TT7 i installed it to my storage card instead of the device (i dont know if that makes a diff) but it seems to save my settings alot better when i am flashing my rom. so i dont need to reset my home address or anything

I found that most of my map folders end in the text ....MAP i.e.
Australia_Map
Great_Britain_ Major Roads_of Europe_Map
Deutschland_Map
etc.
All in the root directory of the SD card.

Loading downloaded TomTom Maps

I have obtained the USA & Canada maps but I'm missing the ''install'' file that will get tomtom to recognize the map. Any clue on how i can TOMTOM to regonize the map from my SD? (also tomtom home does not find the map either)
Possibly someone can show me where i can attach the install file to the map? I tried to search but could not find anything.

Not sure what format your map is in but if it's a folder with the map and other files in then just put the folder on the root of the SD card. If it's compressed (Zip etc) then extract it first. Tomtom should auto search for map files when it opens.
Maybe you could say what format the file is in.

Well when I installed TT and downloaded the one city map for free, it saved that in my \StorageCard\My Documents\<cityname> folder. The Western European maps I had I just copied into \StorageCard\My Documents\Western_Europe, started TomTom and did a 'switch map' in the menu. Asked me for the code and voila, it worked. Maybe a similar thing will work for you.

Yes, it is likely set to look in specific places so in your example it's
StorageCard\My Documents\Western_Europe
and mine works on
StorageCard\GB_plus_major_roads_of_Western_Europe
I'm not sure if the OP has downloaded to PC though.

Wow, I'd *LIKE* to be able to specify where it looks for maps - cluttering up the root directory is so ugly. Does anyone know if this is a registry key or other configurable location? (I've never seen a path in TomTom 6.030)
TIA,
Richard

Agreed. the root of my storage card looks like HELL because of tomtom. I wish I knew if I could delete most of it or just move it all into a 'tomtom' subfolder.

Please PM if you figure this out. For one, I can't stand having it so cluttered, and two, I want to know what can safely be deleted. I mean, it's taking up a full gig on my storage card. Anyone know how to get rid of the canada maps? That should free up some space.
I have all my files associated with the map contained in a folder with the exact same name as the map - so no clutter of random tomtom files.
e.g.
In my case I have on the root of the SD Card:
Folder named:
GB_Plus_Major _Roads_of Western_Europe
Inside this folder is the actual Map file also called:
GB_Plus_Major _Roads_of Western_Europe
Also in the folder are all my safety camera files, favourites file etc etc maybe 40-50 files.
I'm not certain how "deep" tomtom will look. In other words will it find maps buried more than 1 tree level down? I assume not, but at least that allows all the files to be put in a tomtom specific folder. I can only assume therefore that the above poster who has his map in the Mydocuments folder has it as a file not in a folder and lots of the subsidiary files kicking around inside MyDocuments. I prefer a named folder on the root purely for Tomtom maps etc..

Right, but if you load various regional maps, you have a bunch of directories in your root: e.g. for the USA you might have AL,CO,FL,NY maps - except they're all clusters of states so it might be AL_LA_GA_FL and CO_WY_NV_AZ and NY_NJ_PA etc.
For Mapopolis I had: MAPS\FL, MAPS\CO, MAPS\NY, etc... so only 1 directory in the root was Mapopolis data.
TT6 does not appear to look anywhere below the root of the storage card for maps - at least it did NOT work when I tried to move all my map directories into TomTomMaps\xxxxxx.
The "key" I'm interested in would be something like "TomTomRoot = \" and change it to "TomTomRoot = \TomTomMaps\"
Does that make sense?

Erm, mine are in storage card/Tomtom/GB map. Have always had it this way, in version 5 and 6. (6.030). Are you talking about something else here?
All my voices,POI etc are also in their own folders in the Tomtom folder on my card. In fact the only thing that isn't is the 7 digit postcode search which is on the device memory.

Nope, that's exactly what I'd like - if I move all those folders to \Storage Card\TomTom\ then neither TomTomHOME nor the PPC app see the maps, etc.
I wonder if there's a file in your TomTom program directory which has that path in it somehow?

kaiser 8925 tomtom problems

I just bought a 8925 and tomtom 6.203 but i am installing it from the SD card. i cant get it to work at all. i copied the tomtom info on to the sd card and can install it on to the phone but it does not work - says 'no maps found' and it doesnt give me the same options as listed in this post - it doesnt offer to 'configure the GPS select other NMEA GPS receiver Click select' its like it skips that step. i dont know if this is even an issue but locating maps are!
i created 3 folders under the tomtom folder on the SD card - total size is 1.6gb
1. north america 675
2. tomtom 6.2 cab file
3. alternative voices
i've tried to leave the folders in that order on the sd card and also put everything into the tomtom navigation (once it was installed) just to see if tomtom is looking in a direct folder. nothing!
i have installed tomtom to storage card not the device (but i did try that as well and same thing)
Any ideas? any help would be much appreciated!!!!
Sean
Did you read the instructions?
tomtom no maps
figured it out - it was the bluetooth explorer - it needed to be shut off in order for tomtom to work... DONE! no i cant get the voices folder to be recognized - anyone know?
I feel like a dumbass. I purchased navigator 6 and us/canada maps from Amazon and seemingly got quite an old version. I'm running 6.030 software and 660 maps.
hope fully it works is iowa missing?

Garmin Mobile XT multiple map sets on a 6 GB card

Hello! I purchased a 6 GB card for my AT&T Tilt as I wanted to keep both CNNANT 2K8 and CNEurNT v9 readily at hand (as well as music, etc.) I travel to Europe regularly and didn't want to have to juggle data on a 2 GB card. Anyway, I installed Mobile XT on the card successfully and I'm using the latest versions of MapInstall and MapSource on my laptop running Vista. I have the map files unlocked and can display them on my laptop. I have keys generated for both map sets and pasted into both the .UNL files in the Garmin folder on the card. It appears as one continuous 75-character key in each file. However...when I attempt to install both map sets to the card, although the install appears to go normally, I can display only one or the other map set. I can see through Windows Explorer that the available space on the card is down to what it would be with both map sets installed. I go to 'Manage My Data' in XT and all I can see is one of the map sets -- Europe or North America. I have tried every trick I can think of to get both sets to install properly but there's no difference. I do notice that when both have been installed, Mobile XT takes an inordinately long time to initialize on my Tilt. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Warez discussion is not allowed on this board.
Anyway, contact Garmin if you want http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/supportcontact
Wasn't discussing "warez," there...
Thanks for the reply. All I'm attempting to do is combine both map sets on one card. If Garmin tech support was worth contacting, I would have done it. I'm not pirating and not condoning those who do. The "keys" in question are only to facilitate letting me combine what's already mine in a format useful to me. These issues have been sufficiently beaten to death on other threads so let's not belabor the issue.
Sorry for the rant...
changing maps with mortscript
I was asking myself too if it's possible to use two different maps the same time.
But i don't think it's possible with the pda version from Garmin. Correct me if I'm wrong....
My workaround is a little mortscript i made to choose which map i want to use....
If you're interested i can send it to you, you only have to change the values etc...
It's quite possible to have more than 1 map in a card, but it's required some key generate to make it work because of the Garmin's brilliant ideal (locked map to its specified tiny 1GB-2GB card.)
if you want to have multiple maps for different areas on one card, you should use "gmaptool" to combine them and load the resulting .img file on your device.
You have to have the maps unlocked BEFORE combining them, everything als wont work.
Sadly you can`t use mapsource with the combined file without buying the programm "img2mapsource" wich could do the job.
I dont really need mapsource though.
You can even combine to maps of the smae area, for example to get autorouting in a topo map.
To do so, you have to unlock both maps, set the map prioority with gmaptool to show the topo map over the auto.routing map and combine them afterwards.
The program is used in the command line. Read the readme for further instructions.
There is another way... still manual though.
I use MapSource to transfer only the maps I need to my Tilt. Unfortunately, as you all probably know by now, Garmin Mobile XT does not allow more than one map on the card simultaneously. If you try to do it from MapSource, the new map overwrites the old map.
So what I do is create mapsets in MapSource and save them for quick recall.
I created a mapset for all of North America using City Navigator 8 maps. Then I transferred that to my Tilt. Next I went onto my Tilt's SD card and renamed the mapset with a "CN-" prefix.
Now, I went back into MapSource and created a mapset for the NW states of the US using my Topographic 2008 maps. Then I transferred that to my Tilt. Next, I went onto my Tilt's SD card and renamed the mapset with a "Topo-" prefix.
Depending upon which mapset I want to use (on road or off road), I just remove the prefix and launch Garmin Mobile XT.
It's a manual process to switch maps, but it's minimal work and they're always on the card where ever I go. I'm sure you could do the same with EU maps or other maps.
i think that's exactly what i am doing with my mortscript

I'm not sure if you're still looking for an answer on this or if you already figured out how to do this yet but I figured its worth a shot. I'm currently running Mobile XT on my Moto Q9h (WM6 device). The problem I was having was that if I loaded the detail maps for all of North America on to my 8gb sd card and then tried launching XT it would just hang on the splash screen at the beginning. After a bunch of reading and research I found a website that talked about loading different mapsets to XT (unfortunately I cant remember the website otherwise I'd give them the credit...). So what I ended up doing was breaking down my NA maps into 1 mapset for Canada and 1 for the US then I loaded both to my sd card and it worked like a charm. Here's what I did:
Install the first mapset to your device using Mapsource, so in your case I would imagine it would be the NA set but it can be either or. Once this is installed on your card, using active sync go to the Garmin folder on the storage card and rename the .img file from GMAPSUPP.img to GMAPSUP2.img. ** Notice that the name is still only 8 characters long **
Now that you've renamed that file, then go ahead and load the other mapset to ur device. Assuming that your maps are unlocked and good to go, you should see 2 img files on ur Garmin folder GMAPSUPP and GMAPSUP2. This should allow you to display both maps at the same time. You can verify the maps are installed by going to Tools--> Manage my data ---> Maps, it should display both sets plus ur base map.
Hope this helps.
This will work only if you copy two different maps, witch were unlocked with one and same map unlock code! If you have two different maps with two unlock codes - you should rename also GMAPSUP2.UNL file to have two working maps.

I tried this with North America and Europe maps (saved to 8Gb card) and it seems to work...I did verify that the maps are installed by going to Tools--> Manage my data ---> Maps, and it displays both sets plus the world-wide base map.
My question is how do I get it to display the second map...
I'm in the US, and I can zoom out and see the North America overall map, but I can't do see the Europe maps at all. I've selected both, and then tried just selecting Europe in the Mapsource menu, but I haven't been able to get the Europe map to display.
Any advice on what I'm missing?
TIA,
Chris
EDIT:: After a restart I was able to get all the maps to display...this is a great trick!!
Thank you.
Glad you got it to work, I havent loaded anything other than the NA maps but now I know that I can load other maps if need be.
not trying to dig up old threads but i'm using tomtom since the start and now want to try garmin
do i purchase mobile xt or city navigator north.america if i want to use it in canada?
and whats the difference between mobile xt vs c.navigator
Mobile xt is the "engine" to run the map. You have to pick North America map. Read more.
so basically city navigator is just the map...and mobile xt is the gps program that will find routes and current location n such. am i correct?

Actually, you do not need mapsource for this. All what you need is rename GMAPSUPP.img and GMAPSUPP.UNL to GMAPSUP2.img and GMAPSUP2.unl with active sync and you are good to go.
i've been successfully install 2 different map..and registered in mapset..but it views only the basemap...how can i show the other maps?
I already do what you said..but what comes on the display is only the base map...(GMAPBMAP.IMG)..and i can not see the others i've already loaded on my garmin xt
In your SD card you would have gmapbmap.img as your global base map. For GMXT you can also have gmapsupp.img and gmapprom.img with the corresponding gmapsupp.unl and gmapprom.unl files as necessary. This works for me. I tried gmapsup1.img gmapsup2.img that other boards said would work but my GMXT doesn't load this filename. However, mine can have the global base map plus 2 other maps simultaneously.

Tom Tom install

Something that has annoyed me with the new TOM TOM after an update from TOM TOM Home it installed it on my main memory instead of storage card so therefore it now takes up so much room that I can't install any more programs. Any way of modding the installation cab to install on my storage card instead ????
Have searched and also tried using pocket mechanic to move whole program to storage cars but then the gps refused to lock on.

..when installing tt on internal storage map share will not work any more!
Move all files except tthome.bif (created when connecing to tthome) to the internal memory, create a Program (or Program files folder head memory. (I don't have an english version and am not sure of which name.)
Keep a copy of CurrentMap.dat and UserPatch.dat in the original folder.
Home works, everything else as before. Not sure if this is the nicest way, but it works.
P.S. You have to create a new shortcut to TomTomNavigator.exe in the programs folder, and delete the old one.
Thanks have sorted it by filling up my main memory with MP3's etc then trying to install the cab. It then says memory full do you want to install on storage and voila sorted.

TomTom Folders?

I have managed to get TomTom 7 working by putting the maps in the 'my documents' folder, but I have a problem with the dowloaded POI's.
They install from TomTom Home ok, but they do not appear on the Diamond.
I have no trouble installing voices from the Home.
Another problem is that the safety cameas do not show up on the map..but they appear when driving.
Can anyone tell me the folders each thing should be put into...e.g. safety cameras, poi's, voices etc, also some files are TLV, and some are TOC...which ones should they be?
Many thanks
POI's: place "yourPOI's.ov" and "yourPOI's.bmp" inside the map folder.
Voices: place voice file "data##.CHK" and "data##.BMP" in folder Voices.
I don't have safety camera original available from tomtom so I don't know about it; but I have some red light camera file save as POIs. If this is your case, it should be treated as normal POIs. Be sure to set "warn when near POI" and "Warn only if POI is on route."
You may try to check options "Points of Interest" when "Browse map of route"
Note: I save all tomtom voices, schemes and maps folder in the root of the storage card because I have Raphael (aka FUZE, Touch PRO.)
Thanks Nghiem, but my poi's are all TLV files, and TomTom Home put them in a poi folder. Maybe the file and program structure is different in TomTom 7 ?
Also the only reference to poi's in my map folder is a file called poi.dat..all the existing poi's work ok, its only the ones that are downloaded by TomTom Home that don't work
Can anyone shed some light on this?
many thanks
I have tomtom since they made tomtom 5 when you could purchase and run it for PDA legally in U.S Right now I have tomtom 7.xx and maps version 8.30.xxx. The "poi.dat" you see inside map folder is the original POI's from tomtom. All others POI's format are *.ov. and it can be downloaded extra via tomtom Home. I download and install some of them e.g "Haunted_Hotel.ov2" without any problem.
