i canceled my internet and im using my wifi. everything was working well and suddenly my phone automatically connects to 3g. i go into my commManager and i see it turned on but i didn't turn it on. so i turned it off and tried using my internet with wifi again but suddenly it automatically connected 3g.
how do i stop it from automatically connecting to 3g?

Hi all. just got my Galaxy S and its a great phone.
One of the annoying part is that whenever the phone goes to standby mode, it connects to Edge network (E is displayed on top). It seems like whenever WI-FI is not available it always connect to Edge network.
Can I set it to connect to Edge network or WI-FI only when there is explicit request from the user?
yes 2G and 3G works even when the phone is in power saving mode for the push emails and other data syncs
WiFi only works when the phone is awake
but there is a fix for that some where in ths forum
Go to your Wi-Fi settings, open up the Menu->Advanced. Set sleep policy to never. Then you'll always have your wi-fi and the phone shouldn't need EDGE for data, unless you moved too far away from the access point.
Install "JuiceDefender" it will turn off net access when screen is off
I have the Streak 7 without a data plan. I will be using it only on wifi. How do I disable the mobile connection altogether and just have wifi turned on. I figured airplane mode would do this but it also turns off wifi. I would think since planes offer wifi now that airplane mode would disable the mobile radio but keep wifi alive
It does turn off wifi, but you can turn it back on seperately. Each time I power cycle mine, I need to turn wifi back on but that's the only negative.

Thanks!!!!
I switched from the G1 to the EVO 4G and now I primarily use the G1 for my kids to play games. I want to use it for the app Torque but the stock version of Android doesn't let me turn on Airplane Mode and keep access to WiFi and Bluetooth. When you go into Airplane Mode it disables all radios. Also, if I do a hard reset it will require me to register with a cell network before I can do anything else. I want to leave the G1 in my car with it plugged in and connected to my OBD2 Bluetooth dongle. If I leave it in the car without Airplane Mode on, it will drain the battery in a few hours because it keeps trying to connect to the cell network. Is there any ROM that I can put that doesn't require to me to register to a cell network after reset and will allow me to use WiFi and Bluetooth while in Airplane Mode? The EVO 4G allows me to do it. Thanks for any help.

Most, if not all, of the ROM (needed G1 to be rooted) now let you by pass the gmail registation process (skip button). As far as getting rid of the phone call option, you can use Titanium Backup and uninstall what ever you don't need, make sure you do the backup of the apps first.
Hello. Does anyone knows how to make a script for tasker which switch mobile data off if WiFi is connected and mobile data back on if there's no WiFi connection? For the last 3 or 4 hours I'm searching for this and can't find nothing.
Also, I want if there's no WiFi network, to switch WiFi off (so mobile data will be turned on).
I managed to do something, but it didn't worked. When I enabled the profiles with WiFi and mobile data both turned on, the mobile data turned off, then WiFi off, then mobile data on and so on, in a loop.
Wouldn't that be redundant? The os already does that.

Thanks for the response. I know that if WiFi is connected, I'm using the internet from it, but mobile data is still active, right? Even if there's no traffic from mobile data, that's still on. Wouldn't that be a source of battery drain?
I set my data to turn off if my phone is connected for 5 minutes to a wifi. Important: set collision handling to 'abort existing task'.
Here you got pictures.
Edit:
if you are further interested in battery savings, you can read my thread "[BATTERY LIFE] How to get up to 7+h of screen-on-time"
This is absolutely redundant and unnecesary, when the phone connects to a wifi, it disables 3g/LTE data connection by itself. When you connect to a wifi you can see how the 3g/H/H+ icon above radio signal dissapears. The radio chip inside this phones can be used in Wifi mode or 3g/4g mode for data connection, but not both at a time. It is technically not possible.

The moment you don't have wifi anylonger, the phone starts a fullburst search for wifi and 3G/4G networks (even if I don't want wifi/data at the moment). and this drains a hell of a lot of battery. then (if you go out e.g.) it finds a 3g/4g-connection which it tries to keep up (drains a lot battery) and in the same time searches for wifi-networks (also drains battery)... very inefficient use of battery
So I deactivate data after 5 mins automatically via tasker and turn it on manually when I need it (could also automate that, but I'm lazy). This way I circumvent all these battery drains
Additionally:
Under normal circumstances I'd also set wifi to "turn off if not connected" (in settings) and "optimize wifi for battery life", but I use a custom stock kernel that has issues with these settings so I need to leave wifi on all day

Umm, ok... But this has nothing to do with what the OP asked, or what I said.
You may try e-robot from play store.
I have a command for that, after wifi disconnects, wait for 30 sec. If still wifi is not connected, automaticcaly disables wifi.
Same as for bluetooth. When i leave my phone in my desk and gone for a while, 60 sec later disable bt.
You can do what ever you want.
