Hi all. just got my Galaxy S and its a great phone.
One of the annoying part is that whenever the phone goes to standby mode, it connects to Edge network (E is displayed on top). It seems like whenever WI-FI is not available it always connect to Edge network.
Can I set it to connect to Edge network or WI-FI only when there is explicit request from the user?
yes 2G and 3G works even when the phone is in power saving mode for the push emails and other data syncs
WiFi only works when the phone is awake
but there is a fix for that some where in ths forum
Go to your Wi-Fi settings, open up the Menu->Advanced. Set sleep policy to never. Then you'll always have your wi-fi and the phone shouldn't need EDGE for data, unless you moved too far away from the access point.
Install "JuiceDefender" it will turn off net access when screen is off

Hi,
My Tytn II seems to have problems waking up from stand-by and retrieving emails at via wifi connections. I have set up the send/receive schedule to 5 minutes. The only way I seem to be able to retrieve emails via wifi is to wake the phone up manually (eg. press buttons) or wait for a reminder/alarm to sound which wakes the phone up.
Interestingly it doesn't have any problem waking up from stand-by/sleep to retrieve emails via a cellular (3G/HSDPA) connection.
I've installed KaiserTweak and set up the following:
- "Battery Resume from Suspend": 90 seconds (Max)
- "Wifi Standby Mode": Disabled
When I enabled "Wifi Standby Mode", it retrieved emails on cue, but this consumed way too much battery unfortunately, so it isn't acceptable.
I would really appreciate any ideas on how I can get the Tytn II retrieving emails according to the schedule by waking itself up from stand-by/sleep.
Thanks very much,
Prembo
It's not gonna work for you unless you enable the wifi standby mode. How can it know if you have emails if it doesn't have a data connection? The 3G connection will stay active while the phone is in standby, and as such can grab the emails on cue. But by allowing the wifi go into standby when the phone is in standby, you're effectively turning off the internet connection altogether. Either have the wifi standby turned off, or have it retrieve by 3G.
My 3G/HSDPA connection doesn't remain on permanently either.
I have it set (using KaiserTweak) to disable Data Connections (3G/HSDPA) after 1 minute of use. So my 3G/HSDPA is off whilst in stand-by mode most of the time.
However, the email retrieve schedule wakes up the Data Connection and then retrieves email. It doesn't seem to be able to however to wake up the Wifi connection and retrieve emails.
Enabling "Wifi Standby Mode" permanently leaves wifi connection active even during standby, therefore draining the battery significantly.
But it seems to be a fairly straightforward thing to wake the wifi connection up (just as it does the cellular connection) based on the email retrieve schedule.
PS. I'm connecting to the work network via wifi and therefore don't have access to work emails via cellular network.
Hi. I've bought my first Android device, a HTC G1 Dream. I've gained root access, installed the last Cyanogen release (with Android 1.6), RA-1.2.3.
What I've noticed is a strange behavior, quite different from the one I had with my BlackBerry Bold.
When I'm home I enable wifi, to save some datas from my (limited) contract. It works and I've set not to disable wifi when in standby. It works. But as soon as I go out (and the wifi coverage finishes), it doesn't re-enable UMTS data until I awake it from the standby manually.
It's quite annoying...is there a way to change this kind of behavior?
Thank you very much!
Is it still connected to EDGE or GPRS? If this is the case it is a PowerSaving feature, if it's totally lost connection with the net then you have a problem I guess...

When I connect via Wifi, it disconnects from edge, gprs or umts. And doesn't reconnect when the wifi coverage ends (unless I "re-awake" the phone, pushing the menu button)
from what i read your saying thats while its sleeping its not connecting to your data services when your leaving wifi coverage, so my question is: do you not see the data icon when you wake up the phone but after waking it it comes on or are u assuming that its not on?

Yes, I cannot see the icon as soon as I wake up it. Then, in some seconds, it reconnects. More, I can see it's not just a "icon" issue because my K9-mail stops collecting my mailboxes when that situation happen.
Hi
I just have purchased a network free (sim free) 7 tab p1000 from the UK.
How do I give the device a name that displays on my wifi router so I know what it is, presently its just shows up a * ?
2nd question.
I first booted device with no network sim in and it asked me about how I want to connect to internet (none, wifi, wifi & 3G).
I put in sim just to check it worked (it did) but then removed sim as I am waiting a new one.
How do I switch off the 3g connection only (not airplane mode) ? (I still want to use wifi)
I can't see any menu option to do this and on my power meter, 48% power is taken by the non existent 3g connection.
thanks
Robin...
I found a strange thing that answered one of my questions.
heres how you disable cellular part of device :-
go to setting, activate flight mode
then go to wifi
turn wifi back on.
it works, no cellular but you still have wifi
now just need an answer on network name showing on my router.
cheers
wifi will still work in airplane mode.. you'll lose bluetooth though in airplane mode..
thanks, i doubt i will need bluetooth much, mainly i will use the device around house so don't want it connecting to mobile network and running up charges and if i take it out with me i want to control when it connects.
any ideas on router name showing up ?
All of the WiFi issues I have found seem so to be that the WiFi cant connect properly.
I have the opposite problem in that I am not often near free networks. When I leave my house, I turn the WiFi off on my phone.
So I will be watching something on youtube or updating mail at work and everything will just quit. I check the connection and the WiFi is back on and everything stopped because it is trying to connect to WiFi and not staying on my Sprint data connection.
How do I make it quit? I will be at work where there is a highly secured WiFi connection used by some of the more remote robotic systems. My phone will suddenly pop up and tell me that a WiFi signal has been detected and I will get better service by using that connection.
I only want to use WiFi when I turn it on - not when the phone suddenly decides to turn it on.
Thanks
Roxann
If you're on Sprint then you have an S4 and are in the wrong forum. This forum is for the S4 Active.
Hello All,
I have a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 stock. I am in an area with hundreds of wifi SSIDs and I connect to 2 of them. I have noticed that if I walk away from wifi connectivity it it goes to back to LTE but it will no longer connect back when I am back in range of the wifi..
I look at my wifi settings and see if I can scan for any wifi networks, but i get nothing..
I have to restart the phone or put it in and out of airplane mode to get it to work again..
Any Ideas? I do use wifi calling.
Have you looked at this thread. It's usually where I send people with wifi issues first
