3G vs HSDPA signal strength? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I've just got a diamond on orange. In my local town Orange have 3g coverage using 3 masts. Signal strength isn't very good usually 2 bars or less unless your line of sigh with the mast.
After ordering one of those little unlocking chips that you sit your simcard on in the phone I put a payg vodafone sim in and almost everywhere in town the signal strength is better, often to the point of getting 2 bars with orange and 4 with voda.
This doesn't make sense as vodafone only have 2 masts here, both are further away and emit a slightly less powerful signal than orange 28dbw vs 30
I have tested this in several parts of the town and 7/10 times voda has better signal.
Can anyone suggest why this is? The only difference I can see if voda is hsdpa and orange is just plain 3g.
Thanks
Huw

It's all to do with the frequencies the UK operators use Vod and O2 use the 850MHz spectrum and T-Mo and Orange the 1800/1900, while 3G starts at 2100, which is why the signal is even less persistent through walls/buildings etc.
That's why we have dual/triple/quad band phones- technically in UK we only need dual +3G

Hi
I was referring to 3g/hsdpa signal strength only, not 2g. So in theory orange should have the better signal, but it doesnt.

Voda use a lower frequency which persists better in normal conditions but may be more subject to geographical interference.

Hi
But we're only talking 10-20mhz difference between the 3g signals they both use?

Any got any ideas? Same thing happened with my mate yesterday. He's on three and he got much better signal than me even though three's coverage is by far the worst here. Only difference, three broadcast Hsdpa.
Maybe I should try o2 here as they dont broadcast hsdpa and see what happenens.

Got HSUPA?

Does anyone know if this thing actually supports HSUPA or not? I recall that being one of the new features mentioned when I first heard about the Kaiser, however I haven't come across any official word on it.
I wonder if it's been hidden away like the GPS feature was on the Trinity.
I dunno, but if it does, I hope it's Category 6
When I was in NYC I had an "H" show up on my Kaiser ... also, I have the HSUPA enabled in the device settings ... so I would say that HSUPA is supported though I have no idea what category
indeed it was tried in Dallas ( the only place with UPA ) however in few weeks all the markets in the west will be able to handle UPA ( up to 1mb on he UL)
so the network is hsupa enabled or the kaiser is?
eric b
According to the data sheet the chipset is providing
- High-Speed Uplink Packet Access
(HSUPA), up to 5.76 Mbps (Category 6)
- High-Speed Downlink Packet Access
(HSDPA), up to 7.2 Mbps (Category 8)
http://www.cdmatech.com/download_library/pdf/msm7200_chipset.pdf
So it is a question of the Software an the Network/Provider.
According to manual:
"Functionality
HSDPA/UMTS: Tri-band (850, 1900, and 2100 Mhz).
HSDPA: Up to 384kbps for upload and 3.6Mbps for download;
UMTS: Up to 384kbps for upload and download
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: Quad-band (850, 900, 1800, and
1900 Mhz)"
Hope class 8 HSDPA and (any class) HSUPA can be later enabled through ROM updates.

will this diamond work with AT&T

I'm looking to buy a diamond and i need to make sure I get a version that will work with all the AT&T bands. I only get edge where I live, no H :-(
on the back of the box it says:
Network
HDSPA/WCDMA
900/2100 MHz
Up to 384 kbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency & data speed are operator dependent)
The model number is P3700
any help is appreciated.. Thanks!
dont get it. I bought the same version and I am trying to use it on AT&T's network and it does not work. Calls drop off and calls dont get in. Have tried a whole lot including updating the radio but does not work.
You can buy any Diamond you want. You just need to flash a new quad band radio to it. There is a whole list of radios here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407956.
That's what I did an everthing works fine.
Wind dancer, Maybe you can help me here. I bought a 2g phone with the and updated the radio to .05 but still dont get reception. when i do *#364 I see that the band that the phone is operating on is 850.
What radio did you you and did you update the ROM to 1.93? I am still on the base rom...1.37.720.2 WWE

Hi,
I'm also using the Sprint HTC One outside the US (Bangalore, India) and unlocked the phone using the method posted in one of the threads here. I can use both 2G (900 Mhz) and 3G (2100 Mhz).
What band does your operator use for 3G? Maybe, that is not supported.
Also, have a look at the access point. For me, every time i change the network mode, the APN automatically gets set to cinet.spcs. I have to manually change it back to the correct APN and then it starts working again.

hi. I've seen your posts in the unlock thread and you seem to have done it successfully. I live next door (Bangladesh) and I was thinking of getting a sprint htc one from the states. Anyway did you ever face any issues regarding data and what not? And when you do use 3g, what's the data icon in the status bar?
3G - UMTS/ HSPA:
Europe/ Middle East/ Africa: : 900/1900/2100 MHz with HSDPA up to 42 Mbps
Asia: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz with HSDPA up to 42 Mbps
Canada/ Latin America: 850/1900/2100 MHz up to HSDPA 42 Mbps
T-Mobile (US): 850/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSDPA up to 42 Mbps
AT&T: 850/1900/2100 MHz with HSDPA up to 21 Mbps
Sprint: 1900/2100 MHz with HSDPA up to 14.4 Mbps
850!=1900/2100

An issue i've been facing repeatedly is that if i go out of network range, i have to manually select the operator again. It doesn't switch automatically.
Also, sometimes the APN changes automatically to cinet.spcs and i'll have to manually enter the correct APN settings again.
All in all, nothing major. You can buy it if you can live with these minor issues.
The data icon remains the same i.e. GSM irrespective of 2G or 3G. I'm running Viper 1.1.0 ROM btw.

Hi, I am trying to use an unlocked Sprint HTC one with airtel in Bangalore but I am not getting any 3G data from airtel, my phone shows GSM symbol and I guess it is getting 2G data,
Which carrier did you choose and how did you get the 3G data.

[Q] Network settings on S4 Active ( i9295 )

Hello,
I have a Samsung S4 Active ( GT-I9295).
My problem is next: - If I am using mobile network, I can only reach 2G speed ( GSM 900 ).
Things I have already done:
- I changed my sim card from a 3G compatible to an LTE/4G compatible;
- I talked to my carrier provider ( Vodafone Romania ) to double check if there are some restrictions to my account ( none ).
- I checked my sim card to other phones and it's working just fine.
- I even reached to talk to a Samsung Service Support, them answer was to sent the phone to their service, but I can't because I don't have the warranty papers of it ( I bought the phone from a second hand dealer <my bad> and they didn't gave me it's original invoice and warranty ). So I'm afraid to send it to service because of that.
- I searched trough the forums about possible problems, and couldn't reach one exactly.
- I even used the SERVICE MODE MENU ( *#0011# -> Back -> Key Input = Q -> Key Input= 0000 ). No result just managed to resolve my VOC from FullRate to AdaptiveRate, now I have voice drop :silly: [ dumb ]. I changed bands to WCDMA900 - 1800 - 1900 - 2100. To LTE all, etc and my phone signal is 0 and it tells me when I try to make a call, not registred on network.
*900 MHz / GSM - 2G - GSM / GPRS / EDGE - Vodafone, Orange, Cosmote
*900 MHz / GSM - 3G - UMTS/HSPA (14.4 Mbps/5.76 Mbps) - Vodafone, Orange - still developing ( i guess is not ready for use )
*1800 MHz / GSM1800-DCS -2G - GSM / GPRS / EDGE - Cosmote, Vodafone, Orange
*2100 MHz / UMTS - 3G - UMTS / HSPA / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (43.2 Mbps Mbps/5.76) - RDS-RCS, Vodafone, Orange, Cosmote, Zapp
*1800 MHz / LTE - 4G - LTE (2x2 MIMO 75 Mbps/37.5 Mbps) - Vodafone, Orange
- I used QPST for some time, then I realized I can only do more damage then good things, because I really don't understand the code.
NOTE: One friend of mine has same phone as me S4 Active GT-I9295
So if anyone on this forum could give me some hints I would be grateful.
Just let me know what more data/print screen from my phone would you want me to post.
Thanks,
and keep developing
Good job!!!
