more categories - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

i find that searching through the forum takes me longer and longer because of the massive amount of posts.
is it possible to further divide the forum into subsections?
i would suggest:
programs for the diamond
bugs, problems and questions
gps programs and problems

If these subsections are created, you searching time will more increase (or moderator job ^^)... because more subsection there are, more users post in the wrong place : with 3 subsections, some users already post there accesoiries issue in the main Diamond forum, etc... imagine what happends with 6 or 7 forum ^_^
my2cents...

+1
More catagories

I agree that more categories would be excellent and make searching easier but it would make the moderators job alot harder as people would still be lazy, not look, and post in the wrong sections.
However when I see a post in the wrong section I alert the moderators. If we all help out then we can help make the Mods job easier and more bearable!
I dont want to search through all the posts of iGo and TomTom 7 problems to find a new software release or latest update post.
Im not having a moan, just stating what I think bout the matter. Would be good to have:
Diamond General
-Phone Performance (battery life, screen, speed, audio issues)
-Software (all the games, apps, software that forum members are creating...keep it up )
-GPS / WIFI
-Tweaks (anything that improves the diamond)
Rom Development
Diamond Accessories...
That sort of thing.
Just an idea!

Poll for the community regarding cabs Delete on 4-1-07[pending approval]

We are Waiting approval but please still vote

I wish to start this poll to express an Idea I had this weekend. I have been browsing this site for a couple of years now and have noticed people starting threads for cab files only the only problem is that the first page is great then 2nd a 3rd pages get worse and worse pretty soon your looking through hundreds of posts and the thread is crap. My suggestion would to be to add another section in addtion to the main wizard forum seprate of upgrading and general and make a cabs section this would include specific cabs to make registry changes not all inclusive cabs also it would be for fixes and software to make our lives easier and to make it better we can have the moderators sign off on the cabs to verify they are "correct" or that they are relivant. The moderator can also have the right to delete superfolous posts and add cabs to the first post keeping the site clean. I think this will also keep the forum clean. So if this is a good Idea I'd like you to put your 2 cents in. Moderators if this seems like a good idea then I'd be happy to help.
I would like this post to be deleted at the end of this month as not to contribute to the problem.
I'm going to post an example
Windows Mobile 6 and 5 moderator approved Cabs
Change the G in the title bar to E for edge (link) Moderator approval(put names of moderator that has looked at the cab and verified funtionility here)
Windows Mobile 6 only moderator Approved Cabs
Turn on power management of SDcard (link) Moderator approval(put names of moderator that has looked at the cab and verified funtionility here)
Posts Can be added for example apps then deleted once a moderator tests and approves

Thanks Gys it looks like we are getting better results
This is infact a very good idea!!
Further, can we have "onshare" amongst all the XDA-DEV guys, so as to share cabs/tweaks and Roms safely and securely?
http://www.onshare.com/en_gb/index.php?ck=ok
on share
Sounds a good saves a lot of time
on share looks good set it up my id is easymob i have some roms to share
Good idea, it can be every hard to find a CAB you used once before and can't find after a ROM upgrade. I think it would also clean up the forums by reducing any CAB request threads etc.
It will indeed be a great time saver, as it's really hard currently to go through a lot of pages without actually having the link to the cab file.
Great Idea.
Isn't this why we have a Wiki?
Great time saver for members but a great time waster for mods, don't ya think?
anything that makes this website better is good with me.. this is the best site on the web.
time waster
Infact it would be quite the opposite problem. The moderator only need to monitor 1 thread and this will infact save time. How say you moderators. By keeping one thread clean and having a checks and balances system it will let the community know that we are trying to accomplish a goal towards providing resources for fixes etc. but keeping in mind that people in the community don't want to waste htere time either. As for the wiki that is a good resource but the idea is to keep the forum clean. If people had a forum link to go to then they would just need to go there for safe fixes and possibly not post over and over again. As aside I frequently ask moderators to erase my threads that seem not to help the community. I would also like to see more of these practices on this forum but I'm not a moderator so i have to rely on them.
suggestion
Another suggestion would to make all cabs registered as XDA Developers open source I have posted a working cab as an example. Maybe eventually we can work as a community to make our own freeware tweak utility suck as Tweaks2k.
Use the WIKI.
that's a good idea , and to make it even easier , we can upload some cabs we had already downloaded so everybody can use it
I agree with putting this in the wiki. There are still too many, "why isn't my device upgrading when I flash the rom?" questions going on right now for the moderators to do this very effiectively.
My vote goes to Wiki also! The idea is pretty cool and save a lot of time to all of us!
Time is money!
yea i agree... being organized will release the site from numerous senceless threads wen its easier to find something your looking for
Consider this another vote using the WIKI.
That's why it exists right ????
WIKI
OK how about putting a link on the forums page directly to the cabs on wiki
Yeah I'm thinking we would not have any problems posting on the FTP site unless their are roms. If you want I can host a site for Moderators to share cab files ECT. But I too would not want anyone to post illeagal software on it just fixes and patches

Sounds like a good idea in theory. But, I have a feeling it will also start out good and turn into a crap thread again. But it will depend on the moderators, if they are willing to put in the time and effort to keep it clean.

Another ‘Which ROM?” thread….

Hi folks, I’m not from around these parts, I live in the Kaiser world!
I have a friend who is not technically minded, but wants me to update the ROM on his diamond.
I need to put a stable ROM on there that he can use day in day out without having to worry about solving bugs etc himself as I won’t be around to do it for him! He’s just your average, email, music and texting user – doesn’t need anything specific.
Over in the Kaiser section I would recommend PDA Ultimate V19. There are better versions after this, but in the drive for perfection and speed, each new release throws up bugs that need tweaking every now and then – this is what I’m trying to avoid.
Please can you let me know which version of a ROM you would recommend for him? The one you’ve run for ages and always return to. If there are just one or two tweaks I need to make to it, if you could detail those and I’ll sort them before I hand him his upgraded diamond back never to be tweaked again!!
Thanks in advance
Ps. Mods – didn’t want to clutter the ROM section with this, so put it in here.
Please be considerate ogf others and read the rules before posting.

ATTENTION!: We are glad that our community is growing really fast. Unfortunately, the number of topics in the threads of the forums grow in a very larger manner. Unfortunately not every user is aware of the general forum usage and posting rules. As a direct conseque to that MODERATORS will apply the Diamond forum, as one of the most active forums on the site, a very strict moderating policy which might imply:
immediate thread deletion when newly created thread addresses an already discussed topic;
immediate thread deletion when newly created thread addresses an issue such as "Which ROM is the best", "Diamond vs iPhone", etc.;

I did read the rules.
Did you read my post?
also interested
I am also interested in this. I have read all the threads till now and kinda convinced me not to update the ROM. From what i've read, ROM v 1.93 has many bugs (e.g. phone rings one and then no more, send SMS to someone and I receive the message -> these are only single member problems, not happened to many people). In the end ... any suggestions on ROM update?
Yeh - what i always return to is stock rom and SPB Mobile Shell v3 on top of it - it's awesome...

[POLL] Android Sub-Forum? (Please Sticky)

All of these new Android-based threads can get confusing to keep track of and/or even 'lost' among all the WinMo ROM development threads. I think an Android Sub-forum would be nice.. what about you?
Android Threads:
[ROM/BOUNTY] Rhodium Android Port [$1125/$2435] - Early builds in post #3 [12/24]
Poll: Android Port to HTC Touch Pro 2
[ANDROID2.0.1] Rhodium versions
[Resources]Haret Ported Android 1.6 Donut Version for Rhodium(Milestones)
I just feel if we don't do this there will be many off topic threads started asking what android is or questions about the android port. A new Sub-forum would keep this area clear of that.... Plus you'd have a one stop location to keep up with just android, if you've eventually dropped window mobile and stuck with androidd (hoping that android becomes that stable).
Agreed
Agreed. Please create an Android subforum.
No theres only one thread worth reading (out of about 5), the bounty thread.
If you cant keep up with it in the rom development forum, what is the chance of you finding it in a sub forum clogged with other android forums.
I think you'd be ebtter of with the main thread stickied rather then a new sub forum.
There are now some sections specially for Android
Anyway better to ask Mods on this special thread so they are aware of your request:

All 2 of them? It should be under apps just like games, emulators and addons..
I haven't found it particularly hard to keep track of, but think it would be better if a Rhodium Android sub forum was created alongside Rhodium Rom Development.
I think the Rhodium ROM Development sub forum should really be for custom Windows Mobile ROMS, not questions about Android builds, issues and related.
A separate sub forum for Android on Rhodium would allow many threads relating to various issues of Rhodium Android development to be easily found rather than all Rhodium Android stuff being found somewhere in a big messy thread within the ROM Dev sub forum.
The poll currently shows the majority agreeing this is the way forward, we'll see what the mods think.
I will agree that right now it's not that big of a deal, but when this stuff starts working, there will be a bigger issue with keeping everything straight.
Yes please, will make everything more "neater" .
I vote Yes
I totally agree .........
(for now) i personally don't care for WM ROM modding, so for me to find a few android threads in a sea of WM is more difficult than it could be.
and I'm sure WM-only folks won't mind seeing 'offtopic' threads gone.
it'll be easier to start threads for different topics and not get buried in an avalanche of WM threads.
it cost admins nothing to create Android specific forums for us..
Ok!
Really good idea, I agree.

[Q] Why is everyone posting into the Development section?

[Q] Why is everyone posting into the Development section?
it's so extremely annoying, having to filter through tons of junk posts that should be in Q&A or General instead of actual Development question
if this goes one might suggest to enable the option "By Invite Only"
so that only Dev people will can access it, and other XDA members can access it only if invited by a Dev.
The answer to your question is several fold:
- First, some people don't read and/or don't care where they post.
- Second, there are some that think that the Development section is the only place to get answers to questions when that section is for Rom Development only and any closely linked technical conversations revolving around that topic.
- Third, which appears to applies to new users in particular, they google externally to the XDA site for an answer to a problem, their search results drop them straight into the Rom Development forum, they don't quite find what they are looking for and then proceed to post a question where it does not belong.
Our moderators work very hard to keep the fora tidy; however if people will not support that activity by posting in the right place then we end up fighting a losing battle.
I have 3 suggestions to help improve the situation:
- First, that you report any threads that are in the wrong fora so we can move them.
- Second, you all take time out to educate offenders yourselves, especially repeat offenders, on the benefits of posting in the right place.
- Third, people get into the habit of posting in the right fora first time and, whenever required, use google search to see if their question has already been posted and resolved BEFORE posting another thread.
I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards,
WB (XDA Moderating Team)
Do we have enough moderators or need more. I moderate on another forum and would be happy to throw my towel in if needed.
same, previously Mod of the now defund mytreo.net and, legit FlyFF USA MMORPG and some other lesser known forums.
the only problem of being a Mod, you have less time for everything else
Gents/Ladies,
Good quality people with a mature, adult approach to life, good decision making skills,an open mind, conflict management skills, a proven track record of positive help and support of this community and, above all, a great deal of common sense, are always welcome.
We have over 2 million users on here and an awful lot of fora so think carefully before you commit yourselves. However if I have failed to frighten you off please feel free to pm me and we can take it from there.
We have a defined process that we go through. Please be aware that an application does not guarantee that you will be accepted.
WB
PS: We undertook a massive cleaning exercise yesterday in the development forum. You should find it a lot cleaner than it was yesterday.
We still need your help to spot items that should not be in there and report them. We also need you to help implement the suggestions in my post above.

Counter Productive Posting rules

Feel free to delete this / moderate this but things are starting to get a little frustrating.
I've been around the modding scene for over 15 years, not just phones but most consoles, tv boxes etc. I know how to search threads for information, and spend a lot of time reading tutorials, applying methods from one technology to another etc.
As a result, I don't need to post frequent... hey me too... or aren't Samsung BS type responses. However, because I moderate my posting to only the essentials, when I do have relevant feedback about problems encountered with custom roms etc, I am unable to do so because I haven't spammed the forums with "Hi... My names Barbie will you be my friend " posts.
Yes I could / can PM the authors / dev's but that flies in the face of having a community in the first place and drives development underground.
Anyway... rant over......... XDA is a fantastic resource and top notch community, :good:

Every single user, new or old has the ability to post their question in the Q&A subforums. Or perhaps you would prefer wading through 100's of spam posts in development of members trying to sell you iPhones or escort services. There are many reasons for the 10 post restriction...not least of all for the 10000 new users joining everyday and want to jump into development in a ROM thread and ask "How do I root?". You could very easily also help a few members with their questions in Q&A rather than post a thread like this.
Have a nice day Barbie
Cheers from Ken
