What are the basics of installing a custom ROM? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I'm new to this whole custom ROM scene and am dying to put one on my AT&T HTC Tilt. I really want the new features of Windows Mobile 6.1 plus all the tweeks that come with these ROM's.
The problem however is the basics. I've searched around and see people talk about HardSPL, SSPL, JumpSPL, Unlocking SIM, Selecting Correct Radio, and so forth.
Needless to say I need to ask a newb question and that is for a basic explanation of what I need to do to install a custom ROM. From what I understand so far I need one of those SPL programs ... specifically for the ROMeOS v4.1 I need HardSPL. I need to find the correct radio and I may or may not need to unlock my SIM.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

omg are you serious? Everything has already been explained in the wiki so what more do you want? I guess the noobs need it pasted in their personal thread.

The wiki's are your friends

I am in the same boat dude. Although it is outlined in the wiki (in numerous places), there are way too many updates, and dont use this spl, use this one. This hard spl requires this, pick this radio not that one. And one thing is explained this way, and one is explained that way. I have yet to find one single tutorial that outlines everything in one place. From soft/Spl all the way until you turn the thing on with the new ROM.

Well look at it from this point of view.
Different names and possible builds.
HTC P4550 / HTC TyTN II / Orange & HTC TyTN II / Vodafone VPA Compact V / Vodafone v1615 / SFR v1615 / Swisscom XPA v1615 / T-Mobile MDA Vario III / AT&T Tilt / O2 Xda Stellar / EMobile Emonster S11HT
Some of the carriers
att, rogers, tmobile, orange, ?fido? etc etc (all using somewhat different signals)
OS
6.0, 6.1,
ROMS
hybrids, htc releases, att releases, cooked, hybrids, diamonds, dutty, leo, garmin, alex, etc etc etc
So you have to have a tutorial that encompasses all the variables above and more. Not all Kasiers are the same and not all carriers communicate the exact same.
Personaly I think the info in the wiki/stickys is great and totally useful. Sure you might need to read it 3 or 4 times to piece it all together, but thats because there is so much to know and so many variables.
I live in the middle of Texas and use a tilt (7200 not 7201) I use a specific radio that works for my area. Since I use att and a 6.1 rom I use a specific spl and radio (these are just for 6.1) and I also chose to flash via usb and not SD. So I guess I could write a tutorial on how I hooked my particular phone up but it would only outline for my phone, where it is, with what I have on it.
That is all.

I am amazed by the tone of some people here. Yes there are Wikis for that, very good ones in fact. But hell, can't you simply provide the link and say it politely? Would it burn your mooth?
Damn, this is community, not a "who knows better and who has more experienced can flagellate a "noob""...

Why can't you just read the sticky that says, read before you post.

Well, the instructions for flashing your first ROM are pretty straightforward:
1. Flash HardSPL
a. The first thing to do is to pick a ROM you want to flash,
and plug in your device to your computer.
b. The chef (person who makes the ROM) will usually say
which SPL he/she recommends. If he doesn't, you can just PM him.
c. Go to this page and pick the HardSPL that the chef recommends.
A HardSPL Security unlocks your phone, meaning that you can
flash different ROMs than the default shipped ROMs that come pre-installed on your phone.
d. Download the Kaiser-HardSPL-3.xx.zip from the above page and
extract them to a folder on your computer, for example: HardSPL.
e. Now download the attached file in this post (JumpSPLv1) and
extract it to a folder on your computer, for example: JumpSPL.
f. Once you have extracted the three files to a folder, open the folder,
and copy "kaiser_JumpSPL_pof_v1.nb" and "JumpSPL.exe" (no quotes) to
your device.
g. Power down your device, take out your SIM and SD card (if one),
then power back on the device. If it opens an emergency call screen
once restarting, just click the red End key button on your device to
exit and go to the today screen.
h. Open File Explorer, then open JumpSPL.exe on your device, select
the kaiser_JumpSPL_pof_v1.nb, then enter in: "0x00000000" no quotes.
i. Now, if done correctly, you should be at a Tri-color screen and
it should say "USB".
j. Now disable USB connections in Activesync/Windows Mobile Device
Center. To do this, click on settings under Activesync or Windows
Mobile Device Center (depending on if you're running Vista or XP) and
UNcheck "Allow USB connections"
k. Unplug your device, wait 5-20 seconds, then plug your device back in.
l. Remember that folder that you extracted the SPL to? Well, on your
computer, open that folder, then run KaiserCustomRUU.exe.
m. Click Next, Next, then Update. Wait for it to finish, then click Finish.
n. Congratulations! If done correctly, you should have HardSPL flashed
on your device. To confirm this, press and hold the camera button on your
device all the way while pushing the stylus into the reset hole. You should
be at a tri-clor screen (called the bootloader). The second line down should
say "SPL-versionhere.Hard" (no quotes). If it does, you're ready to flash!
If it doesn't, please re-read all instructions.
o. NOTE: You only need to flash HardSPL once unless you revert back to the original AT&T or HTC ROM!2. Flash the ROM
a. Flashing the ROM is very easy. First, pick the ROM you like, and
download it. Usually ROMs are in a .zip or .exe file.
b. Once the download is finished, extract the .zip to a folder on your
computer. If it is an .exe, just run it.
c. If it was a .zip, just run KaiserCustomRUU.exe from the folder you
extracted the files to, click Next, Next, then Update, then Finish. It it
was an .exe that you downloaded, it should do this automatically. However,
if it doesn't, it should just extract the files for you into a folder. Just follow
the same procedure for a .zip file if it does do this.
d. NOTE: After you flash the ROM, when you get to the whole "Please tap the
screen to begin setting up your Windows-Mobile based device", hard reset by
holding down the two soft keys while pushing the stylus into the reset hole.
You should get to a white-colored screen. Just follow the directions on that
screen and then reboot. This fixes many issues, and is also known to make your
ROM perform at 100%.
e. Congratulations, you should have just flashed the ROM! If not, please
re-read the instructions above.3. Flash the Radio
a. This is where newcomers tend to become confused. Basically, you just need
a radio that matches the ROM you have. One reason to tell if you do not have
a correct radio is if you have camera issues, and sound issues while talking on
the phone. Just remember: only flash Kaiser radios! If you try flashing a Polaris
radio on your device, chances are you'll brick it.
b. You can flash the radio before or after you flash the ROM. Basically, the ROM
and the Radio just need to match. Chefs sometimes include Radios in their ROM,
in which case you would not need to flash a new one. Just look in the thread of
the ROM you want to flash to see if the chef included it. If there is an included
radio, you can skip the rest of the steps. If the chef does not include a radio,
he/she will usually recommend one.
c. You can download kaiser radios from here. Just download the
one your chef recommends. If your chef does NOT recommend a radio,
just PM him/her and ask which radio he/she recommends. Many
people prefer 1.58.25.17 for its awesome battery life. 1.58.25.17 also
works on many newer ROMs.
d. So, just for the sake of the rest of these steps, we are going to assume
that you have flashed a newer ROM and are now going to flash Radio 1.58.25.17.
e. Now, just download 1.58.25.17 from the link I posted above (should be a .zip),
extract the files to a folder on your computer, run KaiserCustomRUU.exe, click
Next, Next, Update, then Finish.
f. Congratulations, you have flashed your radio and you are completely done.
If, for example, you are experiencing issues with the camera and phone, just flash a
different radio using the same method as posted above.
That's it.
And remember, please read the Wiki, Stickies, and G.W.E.N.I. for the answers to most of your questions. Or, you could use the wonderful Search functions of this forum.
Hope this helps and good luck

haha I was thinking of the exact same thing, except I have this page bookmarked instead of copy/paste ready

I appreciate the detailed steps, I look forward to getting rid of the default AT&T crap and installing WM6.1.
I apologize for asking the obvious questions of the most basic nature. Everything I read on these forums tells me to do one thing one way or another, and if I do it a certain way I'll brick my phone. All pieced together information seems to be contradicting each other. A simple link to the wiki, or a known to be good already written guide is all I was really asking for. I don't know what SPL's are or if I have to have an unlocked phone before I install this stuff.
Also, half the time "Read Before Posting" topics say the same thing, which is to search the forums for your answer before asking, which I did and found a bunch of confusion.
P.S. Ali G spells it "Respec"
Thanks,
Patrick

basic elements to the phone
cid unlock the phone, now able to use any carrier (att t-mobile)
spl: newer rom (os or build number) newer version of spl needed. this gets flashed and only need to do it once unless you want a newer version, or are going to turn the phone in for service
rom: flashed all the time, can do it 4-5 times a day or or once a month or never. Like windows xp, upgraded or tweaked to ones liking. try them all see whet you like. there is no best, just the best for you.
radio: flashed, mostly comes with a rom, find the one that you like for your area and phone. save it. if a new one comes out try it, then flash back if you don't. I have had some issues with that and will hard reset, and start over.
The phone is quad band, (am fm vhf uhf, Just an example,) will work anywhere, some radios will work better in different markets.
Back all your stuff up, keep a copy of your cabs (programs) on you sd card.
pm me if you think you need more, or don't want to get flamed.
I don't like reading super long post of great job or will flash later.
but searching or posting in the relevant rom thread is always better
Ok some times I do like to read the flames

The link to the wiki was in the thread that says read first..
And please provide some of the contradicting information you came across, we need to get rid of it or correct it.

mbarvarian,

Funny. Typically the ones who defend in these circumstances are prior offenders themselves. After reviewing all of your prior posts, they almost perfectly match this OPS questions. THIS IS THE REASON WE GET IRRITATED! We answered your posts, we answered the 400 other posts behind you...... should we REALLY be expected to answer all the posts forever? Its not difficult. Go to the first page for our device..... the Kaiser WIKI.
Here you will learn:
What is a ROM?
A Rom is an OS ( like XP , or VISTA , or MACOSX )
What s a radio?
A radio is the firmware that controls the base operation of the cellular phone. I.E. the camera/phone/sound
What is SPL?
SPL is your bootloader.... kind of like a BIOS. You MUST change this to a HARD-SPL in order to install a NON OEM BRANDED ROM. If you READ, Jump-SPL allows you to install HARDSPL. Once you have HARD-SPL installed, then you can continue to load custom OS/Radio without worry of bricking your phone.
If you READ ALL THE COOKED ROMS..... and by ALL i DO mean ALL...... the ROM COOKER TELLS YOU WHAT RADIO/SPL to use with HIS Cooked ROM. READ THE FIRST PAGE OF HIS ROM'S WIKI!!!!!!
All of this is on the VERY VERY VERY VERY FIRST PAGE
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
ITS NOT THAT WE HATE NOOBS, we HATE helping people who refuse to even look for basic terms before jumping to the " Start new thread " and dont use the "Search forum" buttons.
As stated before, this is covered about 100 times already........
Chumly and Jimmy, you guys have a lot more patience with these people than I do LOL.
**EDIT**
P.S.
If there IS contradicting information PLEASE tell us so we can have mods fix it.

Some help please

I've been reading and trying this for days with no luck. I've fully unlocked my wizard and I'm now trying to flash to the 318 rom. But I have no clue how to do it. Could someone walk me through ho to do it? Most of the flashing done thus far has been an EXE file or through DOS. I must be missing something simple.
please help

I followed that one already. That's how I unlocked it. But all step 3.8 says is "your ready to flash...". Right now I don't understand exactly how to flash and I'd prefer not to "trial and error" it.
However, this morning I did open up the Hypercore kitchen and I think I'm on the right track. I'm at work so I can't try anything but I've printed up everything in that thread including all it's links and I'm going to give it a go once I get home. I'll report back once that's done.
Alright, after some more research and reading in the hypercore kitchen thread and all it's links, I think I may have it figured out.
I download and extract the files for the ROM I want, in this case 318 8.1 from theloon.
I then follow the instructions linked int he hypercore thread with dumping, and the pkgtool, buildos, etc.. If followed correctly, my wizard should be flashed with the new rom correct?
A confirmation would be nice. Any other comments you have are a bonus.
Another question though; what's the difference between the programs contained in the SYS and OEM folders compared to the ones in the build OS that i have the select? Aren't the ones in the folders already included in the ROM?
Your help would be greatly appreciated. I don't get confused too easily so as you can imagine i'm quite frustrated. I used to flash new versions and programs to my Razr but it was nothing like this.
dont get me wrong are you trying to cook your own rom, because hypercore is a kitchen, i suggest you download one of the roms that are made by reputable cooks, like the NBD series, TNT series, paradox, xmr, faria's, ingenetics, octavio's they differ in the apps and costumization included in the os and the builds, so just select download and flash
there's an executable file inside the roms once you unzip it and be careful if your using xp or vista
The only things I've been working with up until this point is BuildOS and nb2nbf. I haven't fully grasped the definition of "cooking" yet; whether it means altering files for my self or if the BuildOS selection list is considered cooking.
I think i was trying to do too much and using a file different from the one being referenced in the tutorial was a bit confusing. So to start, I decided to use Faria's Crossbow and the tutorial that came with it. It was very easy and I was able to flash my Wizard to that ROM without a problem. But the one i really want is Theloon's 318.
So, based off of what I learned last night I figured I just needed to replace the OEM, ROM, and SYS folders that came up when I unzipped Faria's crossbow with the ones from 318. Is this correct? Because I just tried that this morning and I get all the way to the CMD prompt right before it opens nb2nbf and it gives me an error (see attacment). If there's one thing I've learned from all these bricked devices floating around, it's to NEVER proceed when an error occurs.
What does this error mean? How can I fix it? Is my moving of the folders wrong? What am i missing?
just messin around trying to see what tools work, i got another error.
Ok, now I've got a bigger problem. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. It's actually a lot simpler than I thought. i was just making it more complicated. Ok, I tarted the flash and at about 47%, it gave me a memory reference error. Now my Wizard won't go past the three-color screen and all it shows is my IPL/SPL 3.08. ActiveSync won't detect it, tried hard resetting, turning on while holding camera button, etc. What do i do now?
Now you start thinking... "Maybe I should have read the stickies on the Upgrading forums... bummer..."
The 3 color screen is called the BootLoader. As long you get that screen, your phone can be recovered. How to recover it?
- Use a Windows XP PC.
- Download Wizard_Love Rom (its somewhere, use google or search the forum, but then again, you wouldn't be having this problems IF you knew how to use the search button!)
- Press and hold CAMERA button and hit the reset, keeping the camera button pressed.
- Connect the Wizard to your pc using the USB cable.
- Start the Wizard_Love RUU utility that comes with it.
- Just press next until it starts flashing the ROM to it.
- Pray for it to finish without touching anything until the RUU says CONGRATULATIONS.
There... your phone is working again.
READ THE STICKIES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING AND USE THE SEARCH!
THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED FOR TOO MANY TIMES ALREADY!!!
PS: Maybe we should create a thread for helping the guys that don't follow stickies or care about the ALREADY info we have here... something like:
- 3 color screen: do this
- different IPL/SPL G3 on a G4 device: you are screwed.
I definately read the stickies over and over again. I've got a stack of printouts sitting in front of me that I've been reading for the past week.
I understand your frustration about questions like this but that's no reason to be rude. I used to be a moderator on pbnation.com so I know exactly how you feel. But the fact of the matter is that I'm not as familiar with these things as you are. I fixed the bootloader issue before I even read your response. i found the answer by re-reading one of my printouts that said the re-flash with official rom. So i did that and it worked. I knew I'd get flamed for posting but since I had already had a thread created, I figured it wouldn't hurt to post updates on my status.
I know how to flash roms now. It's actually quite easy. However, I ran into some issues that I'd like to explain in hopes that you realize I'm not taking advantage of you or not utilizing the tools and stickies.
i was having problems yesterday because of my work computer (I think). When extracting the files from Hypercore, they were not placed where they should have been and the tools wouldn't work properly. An example would be when opening buildOS it would give me the yes or no prompts. An IT friend allowed me to use his non-work laptop to do the exact same thing and I was able to use it without a hitch. The simple tmobile official rom update wouldn't even work on my work computer. So it's not just me.
I knew there was a reason that i couldn't follow it.
Regardless of your approach, I still thank you for your help.
I didn't mean to be rude... sorry about that. Its just that from your post count I thought your were like a newcomer like those that come here all the time, asking the same questions over and over again. Netherless, sorry for "helping" you the way I did.
I will have some tea now to relax care to join?

Sorry, not meant as a slam, but someone with only 21 posts, puts up a Rapidshare link for something to flash to a Wizard saying its HardSPL and no other instructions or information... Sorry (again, no offense meant by this) but I wouldn't flash something that is unexplained (if there is another post about this, then at least give a pointer to that in the first post).
FWIW: HardSPL is a way of making your device almost unbrickable. If it works like with the Hermes and Kaiser HardSPL, then you do the steps needed to install this, instead of the old CID unlock procedure of having to go back to the Button ROM and running lokiwiz.
But still, I'd be careful flashing something like this until more is known about it (the source, instructions for the method to install it, etc).
Totally agreed! I wouldn't go for it!
I don't mind to brick my wizard again!

I with you agree, but...
I shall be immodest - please read ALL my messages ;-)
Instructions are not present because I do not wish to be responsible for another's nonsense. To whom it is necessary that will understand.

Lokiwiz has been a trusted and faithful friend. Until I get more info, instructions, screeners even...I will keep using my trusted friend Loki.
No offense to the OP, but "read my other posts" doesn't tell us much. Your other posts are just like this one. Short and to the point, no real info given...nothing telling me how to install/run it. Nothing troubleshooting if an issue should arise. Read the Loki thread, or Dr. P's tutorial...everything anyone needs to know about Loki is there. Yours...not so much.
Hey, all I need is a "no-answer" answer from the poster and that's enough for me to hold back.

Guys dont bombard like this , Prislav has always presented raw content like this in Prophet forum also. Maintaining the terminology, just see diagram, might be useful- simple
But im not favouring any one. please!
I force nobody. Do not want, it is not necessary. To me it is not important.
Well this thread seems nice and hostile .
Unless I am missing something all Prislav has done is to use JumpSPL by Pof (Nice WinCE Tramp by the way ) to fire off a patched G3 SoftSPL and from there let you launch into the ROM update routine.
Prislav’s post may have been a little short on details but there is plenty of info on the board and in his previous threads on the subject. Pof's JumpSPL thread is also a goldmine of info.
Prislav also seems to have been kind enough to provide a patched 'flashable' SPL for G3 devices.
I have not tried this yet (my G3 junkers are at home, so I will tonight) but looking at the dumps of the files and the steps that Prislav has gone through I think this should work.
The SoftSPL seems to contain nothing dangerous and I test launched it on a G4 I have on my desk to no adverse affect (in fact it did almost what I expected, not sure it is putting the device into the correct 'wait for USB' state mind you but it does answer to prods from MTTY ).
Looking at the way the file is patched (and my limited knowledge in this area may let me down, I am more of an ARM Linux hacker) is very interesting. It also looks very much like this could be wrapped into a SoftSPL flashtool that just soft patches a G3 before flashing (and also gives users a choice to flash a HardSPL if wanted, just like we do with G4’s and most modern HTC devices).
Ok,
Just an update to my last post,
I found an old G3 with a broken keyboard under my desk. IPL/SPL 2.17, ancient radio and AKU2.
SoftSPL via JumpSPL from Pof/Prislav seems to work fine .
Converted the Hard-SPL.nb to an nk.nbf (with just the SPL in it).
Flashed the resulting nk.nbf.
Device is now running a patched SPL (2.H4).
Just upgraded device to WM6 from an off the shelf ROM (had Jag 4.0 handy) using the usual NVID update tool.
The end result is an old, unhacked WM5 G3 upgraded to WM6 in a matter of mins.
Download: I will edit this post when I get home and have had a chance to upload the files to my site. - Stuck at work right now.
Edit @ 22:00, 17th Jan: Download is now up here. Use with care and don't come crying to me (or Prislav ).
HowTo: Install PatchedSPL on a G3 Wizard (or just run a SoftSPL if you flash another OS ROM at step 7 with the included flash tool).
Warning: I have only tried this with 2.* IPL’s/SPL’s, I can’t be sure it will not brick devices running 3.* or 1.* IPL’s/SPL’s. It will be a few days before I can test this so if you have a 3.* or 1.* bootloader I would suggest you leave this well alone. Do not try this on a G4, there is no point and you may well brick it .
1: Install latest ActiveSync (If you’re upgrading from WM5-6 your going to need it)
2: Download the rar from my website.
3: Copy the contents of the “Copy to root of G3 Wizard device” folder to the ROOT of your Wizard using ActiveSync.
4: From File Explorer run the SPL shortcut from the root of the device.
5: Wait for the screen to go white (you are now running a patched SoftSPL running from RAM),
6: Unplug and reconnect the USB lead to the PC (you can check the connection with MTTY if your so inclined).
7: Wait a few seconds and start the ROM upgrade in “Flash-WizG3-PatchedSPL”.
If all goes well this will work just like a normal ROM update (without anything shown on your Wizard’s screen) and your device will reboot after a few mins.
Check the version of the SPL running, if it is SPL version 2.H4 all should be fine and your now running a CID unlocked device that can take any Wizard ROM.

What's the difference between CID unlock(using LokiWiz) and this proceudure (Hard Spl)?

To be honest, very little. Both leave you free to flash a ROM of your choice .
This just uses the same 'methods' as used with newer HTC devices and the G4 Wizards.
It will also be easy enough to wrap with ROM's to create 'G3' SoftSPL upgrades that flash to any G3 device without messing about. Just grab the installer, drop your nb.nbf of choice and run the upgrade.
I'll try and bundle up such an installer tonight if I get time.
Hmmm, why do I feel like I have hijacked this thread .
John
So You mean:
You can Create such an installer than given a certain NBF (OS) does even the CID unlock itself.
It would be great

A couple of questions..

So Im a long time lurker, new poster. My wing came today and I would like flash OpenTouch 3 to it but Ive got a couple of questions first.
No matter how hard Ive searched, be it google or the wiki I still cannot find a definite answer about Hard-SPL. What is it, exactly? Do I need it to be able to flash OpenTouch 3?
Secondly, upon flashing the new rom, do I need to re enter all my network settings?

Read all the links in "All importatn links"
and never say again: I searched - it is NOT true.
there is ALL i repeat ALL you need written down!
I did read through it, including the Hard-SPL link. I only see instructions on how to install it, not why, or what it is.
The only thing I can deduce from that and other threads is its for avoiding bricking your phone, but Im not installing stuff on my 300 dollar phone without a reason why or what it does, or if I even need it.
I know you get lots of questions repeated over and over, but damn, your own wiki's search function doesnt detail what Hard-SPL is, it only references the link on how to install it.

First off, welcome to xda...
You need to relax a little, its not that hard and if you do brick the devic you can always reflash the original...
On the original thread for the rom, there is a FAQ section that should help you get started.
If you device is new and you have never flash it before then there is no need to HARD-SPL.

Here's the rom I use:
Open Touch Biggy v3.0 by ttran:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7GY2ZNKD
Then follow these steps:
II. How do I flash an NBH file?
a. USPL
Step 1. Download Herald-USPL-Beta3. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A4N36HLO
Step 2. UnZIP the file into a folder on your Desktop. Let's call it "MyFirstROM" for simplicity's sake. Notice that there is a folder called RUU within this folder now. Keep that in mind.
Step 3. Download your NBH file and unZIP or unRAR it into that RUU folder. Make sure that that NBH file ends up in the RUU folder, not within a folder inside the RUU folder.
Step 4. Place your phone into flightmode.
Step 5. Go back to the MyFirstROM folder and then run USPL.exe
Step 6. Follow the directions on the screen. EXACTLY.
* Your screen on your cell phone will go white around the 75% part of the "second step" now.
* ActiveSync will LOOSE its connection.
Step 7. One step 3 on that black window, the RUU flasher will pop up. Just follow the steps.
That's it. Welcome to the flasher's world.
Instructions by Ivanmmj
Also,
In the future, please keep all questions in the original thread, this makes it eaiser for me and others to help you.
Enjoy!
Thank you, and I apologize for the post. Hopefully I'll be back later with your rom on my phone. :-D
I USPL'd. No biggie. What I think it does is writes some code to your device to ignore the security certificates or whatnot. Basically allowing you to install unofficial ROMs. The creator kindly put an image of Tux on there so I at least know it's Linux based.
That's my take on it.

Sorry. BUT on IvanMMJ thread about "How to flash" and "Neewbee guide" there is all discribed.
But thanks for ttran... now we have the 101st HOW2!!
hahaha
Remeber, check your SPL to make sure it's higher than 4.0 BEFORE flashing.
Determine SPL?
I have 2 MDAs and can see the IPL and SPL, etc., when I do a Soft Reset. However, with my new Wing I do not get that data displayed on Soft Reset. So, I checked Device Information:
ROM: 4.10.531.3 WWE dated: 03/15/07
Radio: 02.83.90
Protocol: 4.1.13.37
ExtROM: 4.10.531.103
Is there some reason that I do not see the IPL, SPL, etc., on Reset?
I assume that my SPL is what my ROM is, 4.10.531.3.
Thank you.

On the Herald, you have to place the phone into bootloader mode to see the SPL. I believe all Wings are 4.0 and above, but you can never be too sure.

Thanks for your quick response. I do appreciate your time and help. Mostly, all of your posted information.
What is the purpose of the SDDAEMON.INK in the Startup file? I have done searches on this and cannot find a definition of what it does or what it starts up.
well sd would probably the memory card
daemon is a background, "gofer" like file that automatically does computer requests
sometimes abbreviated as "d"..as in syslogd.. for a system log daemon file...blablah
and a .ink file is an image file with recorded information in it... usually used for shortcut icons
but yeah.. i have no idea, sorry

It's supposed to be a short cut to initialize Cyberon's Voice Speed Dial. The reason you didn't find anything is because it's SDDAEMON.LNK not INK.

Flashing tomorrow, do I have everything?

Okay, so I decided on Romeos 4.1. I am trying to make sure i have everything, but I am getting a little confused. When i downloaded the No_radio romeos 4.1, unraring i get the rom and a KaiserCustomRUU.exe. Is that(.exe) my hard spl??
Do I need anything else?
I assume I may need the jump spl, but just not sure.
THanks for helping a first timer flasher guy.
No

download any version of your choice, install it first *VERY IMPORTANT*
then install romeos 4.1, dont forget to get a compatable radio with that, or just download the one with a radio.
thanks a bunch. jusr curious, what is this soft spl thingy?

Please do not take offense to this... But if you really don't know the answer to that question, you are not ready to flash your phone. Go back to the Kaiser Wiki and read on up all the information there.
No offense taken. I develop medical software for a what i call "monopoly" healthcare company. However, reading up on what needs to be done to simply flash a phone, keeps taking me in circles.
Read the ENTIRE Wiki section on flashing your phone, it'll save you a LOT of problems. Seriously, don't do it blindly. You could do like some silly folks have done and flash a ROM or Radio with a SPL Flasher, etc, which will cause you problems. There's a lot of smart people here who can problem help recover your phone but save yourself the trouble!
Personally, here's an outline of what I did:
Decide which software you want to reinstall, make sure you have all of your serial numbers and cabs on hand.
Also I suggest writing down any 'complicated' settings so you can get back to work without too much fiddling.
Backup and get original ROM and Radio (just in case I needed to go back)
Hard Reset
Install HardSPL 3.29 (as suggested by the ROMeOS Cook), verify it's installed
Install ROMeOS 4.2 (it's coming in a few days, I'd wait..)
Install a suggested radio (he lists three in his thread)
Hard reset again
Reinstall your software by hand (don't try to restore from backup)

The steps listed in the post above are the exact process you need to follow. Just go to the Wiki and research each bullet-point listed. Until last week there was no section in the Wiki for the 3.xx HardSPL's, so I added it.
As long as you understand the process outlined above, you will not fail.
I know that when I started for the first time I was a bit worried about the out come and I felt confused. It's hard to accept that what is in the wiki is all that you need, and it's also hard to see that it's very simple when you see pages and pages of things. When I flashed back in Nov. for the first time, the instructions were so good that they took you through pretty much every screen..
Didn't there used to be a Youtube video on this?
You guys are the best. No matter how dumb my questions are(and they are), i have yet to hear a smart-a$$ remark back, which is nice, and shows people are willing to help.
I think khaytsus outlined everything i wanted, and will try when 4.2 comes out. I did go through a tutorial from the at&t forums, with a bunch of files to make the OS look like an iphone, and it is really cool. Baby steps i say.
I hope to fully flash, and get into the nitty gritty this week when 4.2 comes out!
:O)
ensure HardSpl installed
use a labtop (avoid power failure, short circuits)
have a shipped rom handy nearby - first use of cooked roms may be different so have a plan B
dont worry we are here for support
best of luck

1. Plug the device into your PC (it stays plugged in until step 7)
2. Copy Jump/Soft to your device. It can be downloaded here
3. Take out your SD card & SIM Card. (you can take these out before you start step 1)
4. Run Jump/Soft SPL on your device <-- you have to navigate to the program called "JumpSPL1.56-KAIS" and click it (it will be an icon of kermit the frog)
5. Wait for the bootloader screen to appear and "USB" to show on your Kaiser.
6. Right-click activesync (at the bottom right of your computer screen, usually), go into connection settings and make sure Allow USB Connections is unchecked
7. Unplug your device from the USB port, wait 5 - 20 seconds, plug it back in.
8. Run KaiserCustomRUU.exe and flash this SPL from your desktop
*Directions taken from kyphur's FAQ posted here. It's post #2*
By the way, one other detail (I'll update my original post too), I personally have always preferred SD Card updates. Always seems like there's less to go wrong.
The HardSPL (afaik) must be done via USB, but once that's done, you can follow instructions to update the ROM or Radio via USB or SD.
Seems to me that SD updates are faster and you can do them 'on the fly', particularly the radio.. I've read of people who change radio perhaps a couple times a day, it only takes a few minutes with the SD card.
I am pretty sure I did it in that exact order. I will try it one more time to see though.

Please don't hijack threads. Your issue should be posted in the HardSPL thread in the ROM Development section.
sorry i thought my issue would be related since I was stuck on one of the steps he was asking about in his original post and b/c he is flashing the same ron i wish to flash i figured this would be a valid thread to post in and b/c if i did something he might end up doing as well then maybe he can learn from my mistake.

ROTFLMAO!!!! At least he understands proper use of the . Now lets work on proper sentence structure. Was the above post an interrogative or declarative statement?

I really don't have a clue do I...

I have the Diamond and really like it but it is so slow as we know. I've trawled round the site but am a total noob to this. I read about hardspl (i think) and flashing roms and advanced config....I just want to speed up the device and dont know where to start. I've turned off all the whistles and bells and the handset is on Orange with a 1.37 ROM. Tried installing the advanced config. but it told me I need a newer framework thingy and now the icon is stuck on the device and I just want to throw it at the wall. I know you guys are busy as hell and that a total noob just kinda gets in the way but could someone just tell me what I need, where I get it and where I put it on the damn phone If someone can I'll get the Mrs to make you tea
Sorry guys but I have tried but am not that techy minded
Hey dude, don't worry.
Check this site out - http://modmydiamond.info/
Read through the radio and rom installation guides carefully. It's very easy to follow and you will have upgraded in no time at all. As for which ROM, I use Swift bl v.6. It's very stable and quick and includes adv config in it anyway. But there are many so check out the rom section of this forum and see what people say, same goes for the radios. Installing a new rom will wipe the data on your Diamond, so it should get rid of that icon problem anyway mate.
I don't know why noobs get such a hard time, this site can be bewildering due to the vast info presented and some of us don't have the time to trawl through it all - espically as lots of it seems so advanced.
Anyway, good luck.
I'll try to make it simple as I can, because just over a month ago I was a noob in the same boat as you... So I know the learning curve is pretty steep, but once you start plodding up it, it does level out.
BUT before you go any further, read and understand all of this very useful check list here...
Also, it'll help to keep this list handy throughout the procedures.
So, keeping it simple, go for HardSPL 1.24 from here. Flash 1.24 by following the instructions in post #1 of that thread... follow these instructions to the letter mind, that is the key!
Once you have your HardSPL successfully flashed, go get ROM 1.93.405.1_WWE from here.
This file is self extracting, and automates the flashing process, so all you have to do is follow the instructions given as it leads you through, and if in doubt, just re-read the two sets of the instructions I've pointed out to you (everything you need is in there).
Do all that precisely as instructed, and you'll be all tooled up with the latest and quickest standard HTC ROM for a UK device... Like you, I was on a UK Orange .37 ROM, and I found a welcome increase in performance when I went to .93
Ps, don't be put off by the RUU utility when you get to the page where it looks as if it's trying to update your current main rom with your radio rom... just keep on going, it isn't touching the main rom provided it is flashing only a radio... you'll see what I mean when you get to that stage.
Pps, I'm going to say it again... make sure you backup any very important data you may have on your phone... and ultimately there are no absolute guarantees when flashing devices, and you will see it many times written on this site that you can only get flashy with your device if you're prepared to proceed on this basis.
Otherwise Enjoy
Edit; oops, didn't see you there simcarloc... that's what my post was meant to look like before I got too carried away.
Take a look ath the Diamond Rom forum there are very good guide and step by step guides
Thanks guys, I'm going to have a look at what you directed me to this morning. I run a forum for a car club and I know when people first join up it can be hugely daunting and a tad scary, even with the best intentions noobs can get freaked out somewhat....cue me
Thanks for putting this in "laymans" terms for me as I think that is what noobs need first off and we'll pick the rest of it up as we go along, its not laziness on our part, personally I just had head data overload and was losing the will to live I'll go look at the stuff you've posted and let you know how I get on.
Once again thanks for taking the time out to explain in a language I may just be able to get my head round Thanks guys.
One quick Q....runn diamond-sspl.bat? How and where is this?
Its not playing
Probably my fault but all I get is..
There is no application associated with "diamond-sspl" or whatever folder I try, it keeps telling me to run the app first, but I have no idea what I'm doing now. Also tells me the framework isn't present. No idea.
Guess I'll be sticking with a slow device Thanks anyway guys
Hey there LoudyMcLoud,
Like you I am somewhat of a noob too…
But since you have a problem I encountered before (framework issue) I might be able to help you out in this first stage.
My device kept giving the message that my Framework was not up to date when I wanted to install a program. I went to search for the latest framework version at MS, and found the latest (beta) release. I installed that, and then I got the message that my framework was a newer version then needed…. Ahhh help me god.
So I took the easy way out, a hard reset did the trick for me (press and hold volume down + centre button + the soft reset button located in the stylus opening)
Remember, this procedure too, will wipe all date from your device, it will restore itself to the way it was when you first bought it.
Maybe after this you can use the steps mentioned earlier in this thread.
Good luck with your Diamond.
Just install the latest .net framework from microsoft that is NOT the Beta version - can't remember the version number, but this worked for me.
Good job,... hope you will get the rest sorted

It's in the zip file you should have already downloaded here.
Extract all files in this zip file to their own folder, make an activesync connection with your diamond, then away you go. (For starters I recommend you choose HardSPL 1.24 when prompted.)
Latest .net is 3.5 available here.
