HTC Diamond shuts down if there is no network - any help? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

This is my las try, I posted this message twice in the XDA forum.
I guess if no one having this issue I'll not bother folks with this again and will try to leave with it...
The problem goes like this, when I'm out of cellular reception area the phone shuts down and the only way to turn it back up is to remove and put back the battery.
I suspect this is some sort of strange power saving setting gone wrong.
Any idea on what can I do about it? Registry settings or something?
ROM: 1.93.831.1

Well, without knowing any better I've have to guess it was a problem with the Radio ROM. Are you using .08 or .11 radio version? If so, I'd try 0.5 - it seems to be the most stable for the majority of people here. I had heaps of problems (random freezes/crashes) when using 0.8 or 0.11 that forced me into a battery removal fix quite a few times...
If you've upgraded your Radio ROM (by itself) then most people suggest doing a hard reset afterwards, even though you don't *have* to, so make sure you try that...

It happes to my diamond too. Now i've got the lastest rom with latest radio (05) and in a week it happened only one time (before it happens a lot of time during a single day..)..
I've buy a new battery today just to be sure that it not a battery problem. I'll let you know in the next days.
By the way in my case i've see that the phone does not shut down when goes out of signal, but before shutting down i hear a short sound than the signal is missed and then the phone shutdown. Many times i need to wait a lot of minutes to power on the diamond. I've also try to froze the battery in this cases and like a kind of magic it's possibile to power on immediatly the baby. (this is why i've bought a new battery...)

I do also experience this problem, after upgraded my ROM to 1.93.831.1, when I'm out of cellular reception area the phone shuts down by itself.
I bought it to HTC service centre, they say no problem was found but they reload the Rom and replaced a new battery.
The problem still persist when i enter a no Network area, the phone automatically shut down again ...
Any idea on what can I do about it?
Please advise .....

Ummhh. Having the same problem here! Read a PDA Magazine and it says all bugs from Diamond have been removed and thats why Diamond 2 is released!

***BUMP***
Need a fix quick please!
@mod: please can you sticky this for a few day?

found the problem... sent it off two tmobile and they just took the handset not the battery...
they said they found no problem and made no changes.... i received the phone after 1 month and i put the battery in and it worked fine... used it with my car charger and started again so i left the battery out of the phone for 2 days then tried and works fine now.....

20 Softresets a day, solution?

I've got big problems with my Kaiser,
Almost everytime it falls in Standby mode, i can't reactivate it with the On/Off button. But the green LED is still blinking.
i've got the original HTC ROM 1.56.407.3
Does anybody have same problems? Or has anybody a solution for that problem.
It really bugs to restart it 20 times a day...
change to a different rom
and which one?
Any one...
I know it doesn't help and not very informative, but any of them sounds like it'd be better than what you have now.
I'm quite new here and have no idea which rom is good and stable.
Are there newer original ROMs from HTC?
Or which one would you propose?
I wood prefer one in German

if you want a stable rom try Sleuth's v1.1
is it in german?
Same happened to me some days ago... but I solved it with a hard reset. Now it works perfectly again.
Take a look at those 2 threads, maybe they help....

Soft Resets
Had the same problem, tried new ROM's, hard resets...etc..etc. Problem fixed by changing SIM card from a three (or four) year old sim to the latest available. Everything running perfectly now!
I'd agree, it's not the ROM. I'm using it since day 1 and haven't even needed a hard reset yet. I want to try Sleuth's but the stock is so stable I'm not feeling the need to jump. I'd check your SIM as mentioned and them maybe a hard reset and a carefull watch of what you install back on the phone to see if it's a rogue application.

Grey screen of death?

Does anyone experience "Grey Screen of Death"??
Every couple of days my Diamond crashes, the screen is stuck displaying a noisy grey screen.
Most likely I will have to reinstall the ROM (I'm using SwiftBL 5.5) ... but if there is a simpler solution out there I'd love to know it,
Thanks,
Mike
I've seen that kind of screen but only when I'm playing a particular game and if I switch the Diamond off before closing the game down; when I next switch it on I get the noisy (mostly) grey screen. When this happens to me though I just need to toggle the power on and off a couple of times and it sorts itself out. Or just not switch the thing off when playing that game of course.
None of which helps you of course as yours sounds like a much more serious and randomly occurring issue.
never heard of it before. try changing to a different Hard SPL, these can have funny effects sometimes.
Thanks for reply. Well, at least I'm not alone.
Mine is more worrying alright. I left the Diamond in standby last night, it wasn't running any apps before that, and the phone didn't wake me up with my normal alarm as it had crashed sometime during the night, not doing anything in particular.
do you notice it get unusually hot at any time?
with some diamonds, when it is processing a lot and on charge it can get very hot, and this may have caused ur problem.
Maybe the Hard SPL will help.
One possibly odd thing I notice is that my ROM is listed as 1.93.00.00 on the bootup screen, I expected this to be 1.93.405.1. Is that usual?
It's not the hot or charging possibilities.
I can't find a pattern really, it definitely crashes just sitting there doing nothing.
Does this also happen with a stock rom?
I didn't see it on the stock rom, but that didn't last too long in my diamond and I've been running the Swift one for a couple of months now.
To rule out SPL and radio, you could try different versions there. If that doesn't help, try flashing another rom (maybe also the stock rom).
If this still doesn't get rid of the GSOD, I would send the phone back for repairs.
Sorry, I couldn't be of more help...
Good suggestions, thanks. At least there's something to try without flashing whole rom.
mine is the same, seems to only do it when phone is charging but idle overnight, and certainly not hot when it does it. I am running the stock 1.93 ROM. Maybe it just gets bored lol!
Then mine was very bored.
Always restarted itself during the night - and lost half the battery charge while doing so.
Had it repaired twice and now it works great. They told me it was a software problem, but I wonder what they fixed, because I have flashed the same SPL, radio and rom on my phone as before.
Glad you fixed it. Mine was ordered on the cheap from HK (to Ireland) so I'm reluctant to send it back except in dire need.
I often see it get very hot around the crash time, as if some app is running crazy, would explain the low battery.
BTW, what rom, spl, radio do you use?
I had the same exact problem up till a week ago.
Now I'm happily a satisfied Diamond user. To solve this issue, do either of the following:
1. Find a rom with a newer Manila version, e.g. Dutty > v2.6.
2. Install the latest Manila cab.
Changing hard spl doesnt work, as I had tried them all. Stock rom was more acceptable but the problem still occurs once in a while.
I had changed to Dutty's rom more than a week ago I haven't had the problem ever since. Try it and share with us if it works.
Reason I say its due to Manila is becos Dutty is using a newer version of Manila as compared to the rest.
Oooh, tasty. A confirmed software method of fixing the problem! I'll give that a go and observe the phone for a week. I'll post then if all is well.
Many thanks,
Mike
I'm running Olinex HardSPL 1.93, Radio BS14 and O2 Germany stock rom 1.93.207.2.
I hope knave's solution will do the trick for you.
Hi...
This just append to my phone sometime tonight..!
A left it charging over night ... like I always do..
and when I wake up... there's just a gray screen of death!
I've just flashed my first cooked rom... had stock HTC ROM before...
and my TF3D version is 1.2.35091.2_1813.6..
maybe this was just a freak accident... one time happening??
lets wait and see...
i'm backing up my phone at the moment to hard reset it later. i've got the problem, that in opera when the page (spiegel.de especially) is fully loaded and it idles for 5 secs, the screen turns grey with stripes and blocks slowly. after hitting power on/off 2 times it's normal again, but as soon as it's idling for 5 secs it fades to grey again.
must have messed up something while updating opera

Sleeping like it';s dead..........

I can't get the phone outta sleep mode (I think it is sleep mode), where the screen goes black while being carried, about 50% I can tap the power button and it awakes, all is fine. BUT the half I gotta remove the battery or sim and then press power on button.
Any ideas?
Also how can we run an AV on the phone, my comp don't see it as a drive....
Thanks!

Please provide full details of which phone, which ROM/Radio/SPL other software installed etc as these things may help others to recognise what you're experiencing otherwise it's a bit like saying why won't my car start with no other details provided.... so some more detail will help.
When I was running the latest UK HTC WWE WM 6.1 ROM on my HTC Branded TyTN II I sometimes found it took longer than usual to come out of sleep so thinking I'd not pushed the button hard enough, I pushed it again - only to find the screen would briefly flash as it came out of powersaving mode and then it went black again as it went back in - could this be whats happening and how long are you waiting after pushing the button?
Sorry, I got an HTC TyTNII. ROM 1.81.415.4wwe, ROM Date 10/29/2007, Radio 1.27.15.32, Protocol 22.51.88.13H.
Most of the time the sleep mode ends easily, but if I leave the phone to charge it sometimes will give me the issues........
Jim
Funny, that happens to me quite often too. I have Dutty's WM6.1 WWE installed. Also I have the slide2unlock installed on it. The radio version is 1.58.25.17. Even when I don't have the phone on charge at times it does it. I have another AT&T Tilt that only has the Slide2Unlock on it the rest is factory, but sometimes I see that does it also.. Another thing I also experience is that sometimes it'll just restart by itself, but maybe that's to clear up memory or something?

Search for 'Standby of death'. There is a while thread where people are discussing it. I htink mine may have been caused by some offending software, as I get it much less now once I have uninstalled it.
Thanks kevin!
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2where the resolution was to get a new SIM
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
nlel, please stop going to every "Standby of Death" thread and adding your answer to it. Adding it to one thread is enough, three or more is just overkill, especially when the threads you've been posting to have been dead for months. Thanks,

Odd Kaiser Problem - Shuts Down on Web Browsing

Don't know if this is a new problem or a different appearance for a common problem, but my kaiser has taken to switching off when I browse the web (on battery). On charger it's fine and I'm posting like that now.
I'll start at the beginning
For Most Web Browsing I Use Opera 9.51 Beta 15894 over the last fed weeks I had recieved a number of low space warnings and removed various programs to try and resolve it without success. I went to check the size of Opera's cache and found the Application data/Opera 9.5 Beta folder was full of Corrupted files marked at sizes ranging from 18Kb to 1.3Gb (unlikely since the drive is only 256Mb)
I tried various routes to delete these files, booting into safemode, downloading scandisk style tools (which despite advertising only scanned/repaired mmory cards.) In the end I simply renamed the folder and recreated the original Opera folder.
Since then, if I'm using the internet whilst not plugged in, the phone will turn off after 15 minutes. The browser in use doesn't matter what browser is in use (opera and skyfire have both done it)
Sometimes it then has dificulty turning back on, reaching the Windows Mobile Screen and shutting back down. But if you wait a few minutes it will turn on fully.
In some cases the battery is still full and can go a whole day of idling/using apps/making calls and texting without problems but will shut down again on using a web browser.
I'm usually quite good at isolating problems, but this has me stumped at first I though an Opera bug or Virus, but skyfire ruled out the former and I can't find any information on the existence of the latter. Does anyone have ideas/suggestions?
I don't understand why it only shuts down on battery power, that's a strange one, but I guess the first thing to do is sort your low memory problem.
Have you tried clearTemp?
http://mobisapienz.com/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=82&task=finish&cid=50&catid=12
This attached cab can let you have a look at what is taking up space.
Have you considered backing up and hard reseting?? That sorts out every problem!
At first I thought it was a battery/charging issue - which Opera certainly does affect. If I leave Opera running in the foreground during a charging cycle then a charge won't last more than a few hours - I think the browser regularly does refreshes powering everything on and using almost as much power as it's getting in to it. But the fact in this case that after finally getting it turned back on I have enough power to go the whole day suggests it's not that.
I saw the link for these utilities earlier today and will take a shot at using them. I worry however that these corrupted files showing a size in the Gb range may throw everything off and I won't find the real culprits.
With my two previous phones (HTC Wizard and Nokia 9300) Hard Resets left me with no end of problems - so whilst I have it in my mind it will be the very very last resort.
Well I hope one of the programs helps you find the problem.
As far as hard reseting goes, it should put your phone back to normal with everything cleared!? - a fresh start!!
If I didn't flash new ROMs so often I'd do this regularly anyway just to stop the phone lagging etc....
Before I hard reset I always think "if my phone got stolen what would I be gutted about losing" - I back those up and get it done!
I'm sure you can find some free backup software on a search, PIM backup is the obvious one.....
Good luck.
i had a siemens phone some years back that had a similar problem. when connected with a pc using a special data cable connection to the rs232 port and trying to sync, the screen dimmed and after a few seconds, the phone died
problem was, the battery was not charged when connected and was way to old and damaged and unable to handle the power consumption caused by the sync. the phone worked fine with a new battery.

@Operative1
I was thinking the same, especially when it started happening during phonecalls as well.
However yesterday I found that the file corruption problem had spread affecting several other apps as well as Opera. Pocket player was the worst affected.
So I went for a Backup and Hard Reset and it went off without incident. I've been intermitently testing Opera this morning and it hasn't done it yet.
I'm also know the corruption was affecting my registry, so I'm wondering if it was also affecting the charging/power management software.
I'll keep monitoring and report back if it re-appears.
Phone Shuts down when browsing web
Has anyone found out a solution to this or have any suggestions?? I am having the same exact problem. When browsing the web no matter what browser i use the phone will randomly shut off... Not a reset it just shuts off.. and u turn it back on by pushing the power button and it starts like normal. but if u go to surf the web again it will shut off..
This problem is very irritating.. I've tried flashing different roms.. hard resets.. etc.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!

Mine has now spread and affects everything, phone calls, texts, last night it went using Pocket Player. I've been considering fully discharging and recharging the battery but these intermittent cut-outs don't allow it to fully discharge.
I'm going to be buying a new battery soon in hopes it fixes it.
Wow thats not good im kinda concerned now.. don't have money to buy a new phone!! let me know if the battery sovles the problem.. i hope thats all it is... ThanksS!!

8 hours in with the new battery and no problems. I've upgraded to a 2600mA one so I'm hoping the extra life will allow me a full charge/discharge cycle to prevent it happening again. I'll also be disabling charging duuuring internet connection sharing.
Sweet so no more turning off while browsing the web??? Where did you get your battery from?? Thanks!
A new battery would be the only fix for this. I had the same problem a while back with mine and I took a volt meter to the old battery and at full charge it was only out 3.6~V instead of the 4.2 so when something like a data connection was going the phone didn't have enough power to stay on and it shut off. it got so bad at one point that I couldn't even boot the phone without plugging it in.

i try 'clear storage' in the settings, put 1234, after that i install the HardSPL, put a new room and new radio version.
hard reset its different?
how i do this?
sorry for the question, when i install a new room i do a hard reset follow this steps:
d. NOTE: After you flash the ROM, when you get to the whole "Please tap the
screen to begin setting up your Windows-Mobile based device", hard reset by
holding down the two soft keys while pushing the stylus into the reset hole.
You should get to a white-colored screen. Just follow the directions on that
screen and then reboot. This fixes many issues, and is also known to make your ROM perform at 100%.
my last choise is buy a new battery!
travelingsurfer, the battery do you buy is 1600mah?
i question this because my frind have a kaiser and i change my battery with him, but my problem not solved!
I replaced it with the exact same brand/model that was in there to begin with. it is 1350mah
Once I can get it to turn on all the way again, i'm going to backup everything and try the hard reset.

[Q] A very strange rebooting problem.

Regarding: Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini GT-I8190 - SIM unlocked version
Hello eveyone.
I'm having one of the strangest problems I've encountered with a phone before and I just can't seem to track down the problem. Please read this thread with an open mind as from what I can tell this is a unique issue that sounds like normal issues.
The main problem is that the phone keeps rebooting. From the get go this sounds like a normal issue with either the battery or power switch but here is the weird part...
It only happens when the phone is fully charged!
IBackground
I have had the phone since release and I have only ever used the stock rom that came with the phone. I don't really use phones much n general except for using it for calls texts and BBC news. I didn't even have a SD Card in it until after the problem started. Everything was running great, I never had any battery problems at all, and then a couple of weeks ago my phone contract expired with Orange and I decided that I would get a SIM only plan with EE.
While waiting for the SIM card to arrive in the post I charged my phone up one day and noticed that I had to power on the device. The phone seemed to power on fine, I could use all features of the phone, but when I turned the screen off for more then 5 or 6 seconds the phone would restart. There would give no indication that it had turned off or that it had powered off in anyway. It would simply just be blank, I'd press the power switch, and it would vibrate once and begin its start up procedure as if it had been turned off completely.
Here is where it gets weird, the phone will keep cycling on its own like this until the battery drains itself through constant reboots until about 85% juice, at which point it begins to operate functionally.
I heard that some people say they had problems with the power switch. I figured that if it was the power switch it then the problem would be consistant and would continue giving me problems when the battery was below 85%. I think I can rule out the power switch as faulty. Naturally I came to the conclusion it must be software, perhaps an APP installed which was incompatible. I tried all sorts of things, regardless I came to the conclusion it needed to be factory reset. Factory reset didn't do anything, still does it. My next thought was Firmware, it must be the firmware that was corrupt. I went through tutorials and rooted my phone, installed recovery software and ended up installing Cyanogenmod 11 (Which looks really beautiful btw, wish I had done that sooner) and buying an SD Card too do so. Still the problem persists! I read that some people had problems with swelling batteries, I replaced the battery completely just incase. £10 wasted, still does it.
At this point I'm starting to get confused. I started thinking perhaps it was the cable providing too much charge to the device, over charging somehow. Tried a different cable and a different power source. Still the poblem persists. I made sure there was no dirt in any of the connectors incase that was causing something. No joy.
So to summerize:
1. Factory Reset
2. Replaced Battery
3. Changed power leads
4. Cleaned device
5. Flashed to completely new firmware
I've completely run out of ideas on what it could be. Why would the phone operate absolutely fine under 85% power? Its just weird! I'd appreciate any help some one could provide me. I've not seen any one else with this problem on the internet. Please let me know what you guys think.
Thanks
Craig.

Thanks
Craig.

Sorry to hear about this man!
I am completely stumped on this one! You've basically done all the basic solutions but to no avail. I had a problem similar to this where my device would reboot randomly, whenever it wanted to and in my case, the solution was to buy a new battery and that actually worked. I've had the battery for almost 2/3 months now and it's still going strong.
Back to your problem, I honestly don't know of a solution. I really wish I could be of help but as I said, you've already tried the basic solutions.
Again, sorry to not be of much help!

I think I have the same problem as you did. After suddenly dropping and rebooting, my battery level jumps back up when the phone starts, and again, and again. The phone is functioning normally only when plugged in. I also presume that it is a battery problem, but the fact that the battery level rises back after dropping, makes me wonder.
EDIT: Problem solved with buying a new battery.
Sorry to jump in, just curious, did you solved this? If you do, hope to hear your solution, might help others in future
