SETUP = XML document - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

When I press setup to install a programme it opens me an internet window with the commands on it and I cannot install it. What is the problem ?

i suspect you have downloaded a .cab file, which is associated with something like winrar so you have mistakenly extracted it and then tried to 'install'
BUT you need to copy the .cab to your phone and run the .cab to install the program
andy (yes i am talking from experience) T

Word! I agree, copy the whole .cab file to your Internal memory, just "double click" on it, and press "Yes". And btw, check again to be sure, if it is a .cab file!

there is no .cab file. Its a setup file ...

fixed it ...thanks

how can I extract .cab file from a windows install

For a lot of program's i don't need a desktop to setup my PDA. But some programs like .net from microsoft, oziexplorer, citrix, resco-fileexplorer can only be installed from a windows-PC.
is there a way to extract or keep-from-a-temporary-space the .cab file that must be somewhere during the install.
wouldn't it be nice to totally rebuild your system with one button after flashing/testing a new ROM or after a empty-battery situation on holiday.
Strangely enough, this is exactly what I do. I stick to cab downloads where possible (keeping them on the SD) but there are ways to extract the cabs from the installer where there isn't one available. Theres a couple of ways you can:
1. Sometimes the installler is built on a zip and you can just open the exe in winzip. If you have winzip shell extensions installed you get an "open in winzip" option on the right-click menu.
2. If that doesn't work, run up the installer and proceed the the part where it copies it to the phone. There are two places you can find the cab. The first is on your PC in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\. Sort by date to find the most recent file. The other place is on the phone itself...the installer actually copies the cab to the phone the installs it. I think you can find the cab in \Windows\AppMgr but it's been a while and that may be wrong.
some apps will put their cab on m$ activesync dir.
have u try sprite backup to backup ur system including storage.
Guy's,
thanks for your info. Got it complete in cab files on my storagecard now. Some i found in programfiles/activesync on the desktop. Sometimes it wasn't clear which cab file to use, so i started the install from the desktop. Then on the PDA when the question comes about where to install, then i started fileexplorer to see where the temporary cab file is. They all where in windows/appmgr/install.
thx,

How to keep cab file from programs that install from desktop

I believe most of you will know that some programs like those from Spb runs from windows desktop as an exe file, using activesync, send the cab file over to your pda, runs the cab file.
I find this very troublesome when I need to do a re-install. So I decided to find out, where is the cab file on the pda, so that I can save it for re-installation later.
The folder that cabs are sent to on your pda before the cabs are executed is in the main memory, Windows\AppMgr\Install.
So the trick is, run the installation on your desktop, when your pda ask you where to install the program, click "explore" on your activesync, navigate to Windows\AppMgr\Install in the main memory, copy the cab file there to your storage card. Next, you can continue with the installation process on the pda.
I believe this information would be useful for many people. It would be good if the moderator can put this little piece of infor somewhere that others could refer to.
Similarly, those "desktop .exe" installers leave the .cab PPC installable files in the PC either in \Program File\Microsoft ActiveSync\"developer directory" or \Program Files\"developer directory".
Thanks
Thanks for these valuable information.
You can also extract that cab from the installer files a lot of times too. Use an app such as WinRAR to extract the cab from the executable. I use that method quite frequently as well as hunting in the Activesync folder as mentioned above.

noob question...

I have an AT&T Tilt. I am a long time BBerry user who never once tweaked a device.
I would like to install several things including the HTC home and at some point TouchFlo.
Let's use my challenge with the HTC home files. Regardless of whether I use the 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 files I get the same result.
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and.....
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing.
Am I literally this stupid?

Hi,
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and..... I assume you copied the cab files to your device?
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing. I dont quite get what you mean by it opens up in Internet Explorer? Did you click on the cab file? It is not suppose to open up in IE. Please be more specific..
Cheers
Here's what I have
The folder for the HTC Home Screen has a file called _setup.xml and around 100 files.
I click on the _setup.xml file and it opens in IE. Nothing happens. There is no .cab file in the folder.

You unpacked the CAB file somehow (likely on your PC before transfering). Don't do that. Move the CAB file to your phone, not its contents. When you open a CAB file, it looks to the XML file for installation instructions. If you open the XML file, it thinks you want to read it, so it opens PIE.
So don't unpack CABs.

noob qn...copy Kaisertweak XML to phone

noob question...i managed to copy the kaisertweak.exe to \My Documents\Personal by just browsing to it and doing a 'Save As'. However, this doesn't seem to work for the XML...it wants to display it in the browser. I've tried renaming the xml file with a .dat extension, an .exe extension and without an extension...but it won't let me download the file. What's the best way to get the xml file from the web (http://www.fxnexus.com/storage/kaiser/kaisertweak.xml) to my device?
(I don't want to use an intermediary PC to transfer files.)
thx, fxs.

all you got to do is in your browser hit FILE > save page as. select only save xml, not full page. if that dont work, then just go here and download the ZIP file that contains both the new kaisertweak exe and xml files.

On IE ...on my device?? I don't have a File Menu option!
Once I load the xml file within IE...all I have at the bottom is a 'Back' menu option, and a 'Menu' menu option. 'Menu' has Edit, View, Tools etc...but no 'File'.
I tried doing a Edit --> Select All --> Copy and then, went into Word Mobile to paste it all and save as text...but then, I'm left with a '.txt' file that I cannot rename to '.xml'.

do it on your PC not in the WM. if you insist on using your device to dl, then i suggest installing a unzipper. then you can just download that kaiser tweak zip file to your phone. unzip it on the phone and you got both the exe and xml right on the phone.
Can't install Kaisertweak on AT&T Tilt
I've tried installing this two ways:
1. On my PC: when I click the .exe file, I get the message: "KaiserTweak.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
2. On my Tilt: when I click on the .zip file, it shows KaiserTweak.exe and KaiserTweak.xml, but the latter file has the Opera browser icon next to it and the description "Unknown Type." When I tap on KaiserTweak.exe, I get the message: "Unable to open file \Windows\-IA Zip Temporary Files\KaiserTweak.xml". Press OK to ignore and risk data corruption. Press Cancel to kill the program." When I press OK, nothing happens: I'm brought back to the display of the .exe and .xml files.
I'm assuming the program is not installing, and that I'll know that the installation was successful when I see KaiserTweak when I select Start/Programs.
Thanks.
Joel

I have a HTC Fuze and CAB file not working.

I have a HTC fuze from att and I m trying to install application that have a .cab ext but no respond when I unzip and copy it to my phone. It direct me to the opera website. What shall I do?
I just bought an att HTC and I want to change the today screen and batter meter to %. Everytime i download a .cab file. i tried both zipping it and putting it on the phone and leaving it unzipped and putting it on the phone but everytime i file search for the .cab file it doesnt even show up on my device. How can i do this? thanks for the help!!!!
thanks
.cab installation...
If the cab is zipped (ie. it has .zip / .rar extension), unzip it on your desktop. If you're not sure if the file is actually a .cab file, right click and select 'Properties' - you can then see the actual extension and file type.
Copy the .cab to your device. Place it somewhere obvious, so you can find it easily (ie. the root of Internal Storage). Then on your device, locate the file and tap on it to install it. If it doesn't install this way, it's either not a .cab, or it's not designed for your device
