I got pointed to this site by a friend who has had quite a bit of experience with flashing various HTC phones.
I have read through the "NOOBS READ THIS" threads but still can't figure out what version of SPL is on my phone. I understand that flashing with an SPL < 4.0 = Bricked phone. Where can I find this?
Under Device Information:
ROM: 4.10531.3 WWE
Date: 3/15/07
Radio: 02.83.90
Protocol 4..13.37
ExtROM: 4.10.531.103
Thanks in Advance,
David
to find your SPL, go into bootloader mode and it should become obvious.
to do so, soft reset while holding the camera key.
its good that you read before your first flash. You should read some more.
By default, the tmobile wing's spl is over 4, but you should know how to check anyway
Thanks
That worked...
IPL is 4.10.002
SPL is 4.10.0000
I can use better firmware now.
Thank you.
no problem.
welcome to xda-devs, by the way
wait so the t-mobile wing doesn't need hard-spl??
USPL, i believe he's using
woops. my yoda was showing
Yay I just went to the bootloader menu for the first time.
I got IPL 4.10.0002 SPL 4.10.0000
It's exciting! Im guessing by tonight I'll have an awesome theme running on my wing.

You do if you want to use my ROMs or any other Micro ROM. Technically, you can use USPL for everything else, but you risk damaging your SPL since it's not locked out.
Oh and the guy who posted above me is a spam bot.
yeah i reported him.
i love hardspl. its great for people with shaky hands and sketchy usb ports.

reset and hold the camera button, you will see a 3 color screen...connect to the PC it should say usb in the bottom of the device screen....now install the latest update from your carrier.
PS
for future reference if you device is ended CID unlocked you do not need to use shelltools...just use the update utility provided by the rom.
also this info has been posted 1 trilion times

Its not that hard to look at the stickies (thats were the really important stuff is located).

thank you faria, bwesty and mfrazzz. I got to the bootloader screen and reflashed it with the latest tmobile rom. I'm sorry ive been asking so many questions, but i've been getting some mixed answers.
like someone told me (ill give the link to prove it) that flashing the latest tmobile rom will cid unlock your device. Im pretty sure thats not the case. And faria i did your latest rom and it got stuck at 99%, and i figure thats because it's not cid unlocked
i did search the forums mfrazzz and it came to no avail. You're right, if i looked really hard i could have found it somewhere, deep in a thread, but what do you expect from someone who just thought he bricked his $400 phone?
there should be a section for itself titled "I just broke my phone, how do i fix it" And inside that thread there should be every way to fix every situation. And i dont mean buried, i mean in the first post. Just a thought, it would have really helped and stopped me from bothering you guys
But as for now im going to go to the sheeltool thread and see if they can help me, i still can't get that to work.
thanks again

A really useful thread (besides the WIKI is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613 it, by the way, is the very first item on the WM6 forum, this forum has Dr. P's EXCELLENT thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435 plus other useful stickies) It seems that your phone is 'working' after flashing the TMo 2.26, the first thing you need to do is find out if you have a G3 or a G4, then CID unlock appropriately. Skip the shelltool stuff for now, if you don't understand what phone you have, you will be on the road to "brick city".

demontefixo thanks for the quick reply
but, i do know things about my phone, i just have little questions that no one really explains throughly. I know i have a g3, i know about cid unlocking and how to do it. I've into the registry on both my (ex) tmobile dash and now the mda. I'm currenty looking for the best new rom that i want to flash, but i can't void my warranty and that's why im using shell tools. I've been reading this forum for quite a while, and i don't consider myself a newbie (i cant control what other people think) but i do need help on certain areas, and im sorry for even needing that

CID unlocking (as far as I know) won't void your warrantee--at least it hasn't voided mine (TMo US), but YMMV. That said, it isn't a bad thing to ask for help, (cross posting is generally frowned on) we like to help people who aren't lazy or stupid.
When you do post for help, generally the more info provided the better, but I sense you know that. If your phone is a G3, I am not really sure why you are seeking help in the G4 forum....anyway.
IMHO, Faria's WM6 works really well, and I haven't had serious issues with it. There are others that love different ROMs or will cook their own, great! Nottoosmart has a good looking ROM (a Mun derivative ROM) everyone will have an opinion, I know what works well for me. So "what is the best"? Hmm Faria's WM6 (for me).

While keeping your phone CID Locked does keep you from voiding your warranty in that respect, flashing a custom rom on your phone will technically void your warranty also (although unless do something nasty to it, you should be able to get it back to the official rom and with it still CID locked then you should be fine). Example: You flash the latest and greatest WM6 on your phone and then your USB connector breaks and your SD slot doesn't work. You now can't get back to WM5 so they will know if they look. Far fetched, but I'm just throwing it out that if you are really concerned about your warranty, flashing custom roms may not be a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, I'm just saying that doing pretty much anything in the upgrading and WM6 forums here is basically voiding your warranty. But I think in most cases, the carriers don't look that close.
And please ask for assistance when you have issues. There are so many posts though, its hard to tell who has really read and who hasn't sometimes. Just remember that the stickies at the top of the forums are your friends and there is really good info there to help you get unstuck (most of the time).
i love you guys
Hello, I bought a Wing this morning from a guy that flashed it to what looks like OpenTouchV3.OSL WWE (ROM date 06/20/07). I would like to reflash back to the stock TMobile Rom, but from reading this forum it looks like I have a chance of bricking it. I have downloaded the stock Rom image RUU, do I just run it or would that be totally stupid???!!!
Thanks for your help!
the stock rom is utter trash (it's really not worth it, and you already have a nice cushy custom), but anyway...
soft reset your wing while holding the camera button. A tricolor bootloader screen should appear. On it will be the numbers of your IPL and SPL. If your SPL 4 or higher and is all numbers, you can just connect your phone to your computer and run the RUU.
If, however, the SPL has letters in it (yang or something like that), I refer you to one of the more senior members (papamopps, ivan help!)
hmm, I can't seem to get the tricolor bootloader screen to come up
hold camera, poke hole on side, keep holding camera until tri color screen comes up
Aha, thanks. It says:
IPL 4.10.0002
SPL 4.70.Yang
I'm thinking this needs some expertise
na i dont think you can undo that.
thats hard-spl.
look around i think there was a thread where someone asked how to undo hard-spl.
Well, I'm glad I asked! Thank you.
What I really want is Office and Voice Command on here, as I am using it for business purposes. Are these available? Or can I flash a cooked ROM with these programs on there if my device is hardSPL?
hey a found the solution!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364543
Searched for the thread on how to undo HardSPL, worked like a charm & was able to reflash to stock ROM. Thanks to all of you!
no problem man
i have been roming and cooking with my tmobile wing for about a year now so ive become really good at it i have yet to brick my phone.....UNTILL NOW
MY NOOB HUSBAND thought while i was at work and he was using my phone to rom it he didn't know that certin roms go with certin phones so when he put the neo rom onto my tmoble wing he bricked it
i have it into bootloader mode but when i plugh it inot the usb activesync wont reconize it so i am having a hard time hard spl ing it...is the phone useless now or is there a way to fix it. im also getting an rom error. anyone have any advice....
What SPL is it showing? If your phone wasn't HardSPL'ed before, he may have ruined it and nothing will fix it short of changing the motherboard. Try flashing it with the stock RUU if it's not HardSPLed. If it is, try flashing it with your ROM named HERAIMG.nbh and place it in your SD card. Good luck.
on the bootloader screen it shows
ipl 4.10.0002
spl 4.10.0000

Sounds like the IPL and SPL are still intact. It's not HardSPL'ed so just try the stock RUU. Not having the green icon on activesync doesn't mean it doesn't see it. It means that it isn't synchronizing.
yup same thing happened to me with my first flash. i used a different rom and thought i bricked. recovered with the stock RUU
divorce him. it's that simple
jkjk
yeah, just RUU it.
lol divorce him thatsfunny, the papers were out but lucky for him i fixed it lol...i shoulda thought of using the stock rom to begin with thanks eveyone for your help and advice

Great to hear that it's working, again! Now, for an important part: So you're a silent personal cook who only cooks for herself? ^_^
No, the most important part is... HARD SPL THAT THING! lol
If mine read
IPL 4.26.0002
SPL 4.26.0000
is that really bad?
Thanks for your help
EDIT:
Thanks God, it isn't. Was able to install TMobile's ROM from Bootloader.
IF others have bricked their Herald/Wing:
1. Download TMobile's ROM from here : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Herald_Upgrades (Choose 4.26.531.4)
2. Enter Bootloader on your Wing (Hold in the camera button and then soft reset with your stylus)
3. Run the TMobile ROM.
It worked for me. Hope it does for you too.
Hello, my device has a SPL of 5.04.0000 and I want a new ROM on it because it still runs WM5...
Now, in some threads I read that devices with an SPL higher than 4.xx.xxxx do not need to hard SPL it... but I'm not sure about it...
Can anyone give me the correct answer on the question if I need to hard SPL my device?
Let me first tell you im still a new flasher myself (Atleast to PDA's, Ive flashed PSP's And numerous other phones) and the way I read it, its much safer to flash with the HardSPL. I had the 4.00+ SPL and Still HardSPL'ed my TMo Wing. Its quick, easy, and it also sped up my phone quite a bit by taking off uneeded junk! Any questions please feel free to ask. Ill help as much as possile.
So if I understand everything, it is nessaserry to HardSPL my Herald before I can flash it with another ROM? And there is no difference with phones with an SPL of 2.XXX or 4.XXX or in y case 5.XXX? It still has to get an Hard SPL?
Well,
you will definitely need Hard SPL when intending to use a custom ROM! But beware: All devices with an SPL below 4 will brick when trying to Hard SPL them. So be sure to have an SPL of at least 4. Don't know if there's any workaround or w/e.
Cheers
I have an SPL above 4 so it will work! There are different "ways" to hard SPL the phone... does anyone know what the easiest way is?
Heres the thread I used.... it was quick and painless lol.... Clickity Click! But before u get started if you have windows vista there will be a few minor issues, but i can walk ya through that if necessary.
Used that thread as well. Works flawless
Cheers
Hello
Could someone please kindly explain what does SPL mean?
And why ROM is called ROM? Is it the firmware?
Doews HSPL void warranty and USPL not?
I searched at google for a while but didnt get a proper answer.
Sorry to ask this here. Anyway, I am sure there are a lots of people who would like this to know as well.
Thanks
no idea..
Check my post at the end of the "Dummys......" sticky post, Uspl Doesnt invalidadte as its a temporary change as far as I'm aware. Hspl however invalidates the Eula of windows I think.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone
Rom=Read Only Memory in this rom you find the firmware of your device.
thanks for all your replies..
now I understand why these are called ROMs..
but one thing that still haunts my mind..
what does SPL stand for? i am very curious in this..what is it for?
is it some securtiy protocol? or what?
thanks guys..
SPL - second program loader.
the SPL is the bootloader. on a pc, the equivalent is BIOS.
HSPL is what you use to edit the SPL in such a way that it would allow you to use custom ROMS. its a permanent change as you are flashing a new SPL. USPL works only whenever you use/run it, so the SPL remains unchanged. changes are only temporary and when the USPL application is closed (or the device rebooted), the device goes back to its previous SPL.
See the SPL Questions page on the wiki. It will tell you more than your ever want to know .
AFAIK, USPL void's the warranty just as much as Hard SPL, but does it in a way that no-one can detect.
It's like saying the warranty is void if used in the attic, taking your phone in the attic will void it, but it will take some proving that you took it into the attic
Dave
nice example with the attic
thanks guys for your replies...Now I finally now what SPL is thanks to ASK768.. thanks...
have a great one...
no problem.
but actually, while we're at it, why would one want to flash a new radio on their device? what kind of benefits does it give?

I suggest you read up on radio's. Generally speaking newer versions have better reception, GPS fixed, less battery drain. Obviously area/country you are in may effect reception so best to read up on which radio's work better in which areas!
