Tilt already coming named? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi,
I'm new and I'm happy to be a member this site. I just received my new at&t tilt a couple of days ago. I installed the activesync software on my computer and connected my device via usb. When my device came up on my computer and I ran the short device installation my devices name was "Johnson" ... Is it suppose to come named already? Or would somebody have to had named it? Should I be alarmed? Did I get a used Tilt?
One more question, how do you delete the 10 songs that are already preloaded on the Tilt's memory?
Thanks everyone for your help. I'm so excited to have this phone. I can't wait to dive into it and do all the customizeing that I've seen. I hope to learn a lot from you guys and gals.

where did you purchase it? by default the activesync name should be something like ATT_TILT (im using a cooked rom so its something like HTC_TYTNII) so it sounds like its used..whats the call duration when you goto start>settings>device info>call duration tab ?

The call duration is showing 0's all the way accross. I haven't activated the phone yet. It should be activated tomorrow. Could the call duration time possibly be reset?
When I first turned the phone on I did go through all the set up processes like if it were brand new ...
Is there a way to change the name?

Strange...unless you had active sync on your computer before?
Don't think you can easily reset the usage timer, even on a hard reset.
I just installed 6.1, and it didn't reset the timer.
Welcome to the club...lots of useful info around here.

I bought it from newegg.com. I think they outsource though through a company called simplexity I believe.
Thanks reaper, that worked.
Thanks 007 for the welcome. Anything you could recommend that i could get started on?

Getting Started
If you haven't already, read the manual that is on the CD that came with your phone. That will always be the best place to start. Next, start browsing the forums and do some reading. After that, use the 'Search' feature to get to know what's out there and what you can do with your phone.
I've been lurking here for a couple of days, having just received my Tilt, but am finding this site to be invaluable. I also regularly visit mobilitysite.com, which used to be devoted to the Dell Axim I used to have. Quite a friendly bunch over there, just like we have here.

Or use the middle link in my sig.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info and links everyone. Just from those two links I already have a bunch to research and figure out.

I DID IT!!

Woo-hoo!
I have finished the multiple hour process of doing the ROM and extended ROM upgrade!!! I am so proud of myself and had no one else to tell who would understand what the heck I meant - so I'm posting it here for my own personal pat on the back!!
Although I do think there is a need for re-writes for the BA incompetent because I accomplished this using wiki, here, and the BA standardization project yet still came across a few glitches....don't know how i figured them out but I guess after spending four days reading message boards and taking notes something must have stuck up there!! Also, it seems as if I had to piece meal the extended ROM update - which makes me hope I did it right but one of the places I downloaded it from was missing all the nbf files??
BUT....who cares now!!! I'm just excited I finally got it done. Now I can relax and have a drink or few and tomorrow start looking into the current radio update and the BT updates....but quick question....not that I am being lazy - but are they really necessary if I am not using a BT headset, and rarely use BT for anything else? After all the problems people had I just got a wired headset and can't even think about WM5.0 till they fix the sound issues for the SX66 - variable ringtones is an absolute must! Also, I rarely (like once a month) use the internet on this device so do I need the radio upgrade?
Another issue - can anyone explain why after doing hard resets active sync makes you set up a new paternership? I don't mind since it still ends up giving me all my Outlook info - but just was wondering why?
Well....off to do hubby's - hopefully his will take less time!!
THANKS to all who have contributed to XDA forums, wiki, and the BA standardization project - I couldn't have done it without your info, insight and problems you experienced!!!
not 100% sure, but I think the HR makes the thing reset everything... and... well..
I always change the name of my device...
And it tries to call itself PockePC again...
And the computer doesn't like that.
But if I change the name back to whatever it was and connect to the computer it tells me the name is in use. And that's annoying...
Before you slap that sucker back in the cradle, go to AS, FILE, Delete Partnership (you'll have about 100 from the way I read your post ) And... Well... Re-set it up using whatever name you wanted to use that it wouldn't let you.
And... if you're already doing this and are just wondering why it's necessary, look at the name of the software manufacturer and I'm certain you'll see the reason for your dificulty

Best anti-theft software for Kaiser?

Hello community!
I just wanted to see some input from you guys as far as what is your preferred anti-theft application for your Kaiser phone? There's a few applications out there, and the following is a short list of the most popular apps out there:
- WIMP (Where is my phone)
http://www.wimp-software.co.uk/
- MobileJustice
http://thinkabdul.com/2007/03/02/mo...monitor-sim-card-changes-via-gps-coordinates/
- Sprite Terminator
http://spriteterminator.com/
Theres a few more out there, and I am curious as to see which one has the best options and capabilities. Some of them have GPS tracking systems, others can wipe all your information remotely, either way they have the potential to become real handy in extreme cases.
If anyone has a story to share where they used these applications in a real world situation please share it with the community as well!
Thanks
Sprite
I have tried Remoteprotect, and Ultimate theft before Sprite Terminator. Remoteprotect works great but no GPS and Ultimate theft would not shut off when tested. It keeps forwarding the text and its also a gimick you have to buy it in three separte sections. So I would recomend Sprite Terminator.
you can also try this on http://smartphonetracker.blogspot.com/
free and working.
I am also interested in installing one of these programs. Is there anyone who has tried more than one of them? Which do you recommend?
does anyone know if there is any possibility that we could implement the HP security system for there new ipaq phones into other WM phones?
something like what is explained in the end of this video...

MODS. This thread should be in the general Kaiser forum....it would get more relevant views there I would think.

I personally like VITO FindMe (http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/findme.html) Free, get the activation code at the bottom of that page. NOTE: Since FindMe has an easily noticeable scrolling text, for the today screen, i like to hide it in an UltimateLaunch tab.
and MccMobileFinder (incase you loose the phone somewhere in your house, it will turn the phone volume up and play an alarm, http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1749)

Thats cool, I was thinking of looking for a program that did this. You cant be too careful .
The only downside I could think of if the sim gets yanked out you´re screwed - right? :S
How does it work, does it trigger a GPS connection every couple of minutes?

yes i am also concerned for that aas well... but i remember reading up on one of those programs listed above that also works in the background even when the sim card get pulled out...
There was one I was looking at, don't remember the name now. Maybe it is one already listed. Anyway, you could go on the internet at any time and see on a map where your phone is, and if someone thought they were going to just take your SIM out and replace it with theirs the phone immediately sends you a text with the phone number of the new SIM card. I thought that was cool, because you would then know who was using your phone.

This has got to be the best one....

It will do as the others... but will also send you call history and sms logs from the users sim to you so you know whats been typed and called too..

Wow awesome! Thx for this! The only thing to find out is how to hide it, and cook it with settings into a ROM.
These are all great programs but.....
I had my 8125 stolen and the crook just did a hard reset and the recovery software was gone. Luckily the bad guys had other bad habits and the cops found them. They recovered my phone but it was totally wiped clear, had been reinstalled with new music but no tracking software.
Because not just heavy users know how to do a hard reset the thing that is missing is having the tracking software burned into the rom so it can't be erased. I know this is quite A challenge. But when and if that can be solve we will have a good tool to protect our Under perfoming HTC devices (could not help that last part)
Cook the app into a ROM isn't that hard i think (also i haven't cooked a ROM until now, but seen tutorials which explain how) and in case of smartphonetracker the settings are saved in "settings.config" so we need to cook in a file which 'simply' copys this file into the "Program File" folder. Doesn't sound too hard but the "simply copy.." is may the biggest problem.
For sure nearly everybody who visit this forum is capable of flashing a new ROM and therefore can avoid tracking. But the bit more security is worth the effort, in my opinion.
I still don't understand.
Let's assume some asshole and steals your phone. Why do they do with it?
Option A - Re-sale. Surely this shouldn't be possible as the original owner of the phone will contact the network and the IMEI will be blocked.
Option B - Access to Data. You're device is password protected (right?) so they need that to get into the phone via activesync. As long as they don't switch it off, it might not lock the screen so they'd have to leave your SIM in... but then they'd surely be intelligent (they want data after all) go to flight mode and it won't be able to dial home. And then there's the media card.... even encrypted it probably wouldn' be hard to bypass. Surely the best you can hope for is to send a message and have the phone kill itself.
Option C - Phoning <insert foreign country>. Same answer as A.
Result is, I do not see how this software can be of real use. The best thing that I can think about for this software is someone can text you while you are driving and have it reply where you are on your behalf.
Or am I missing something?

Many Kaisers are not bound to their phone network. I can insert another sim card and use it without limitations.
well how about some thug takes your phone and isn't to savy tech wise. He doesn't take it because it's "the top of the line" driverless phone, no he takes it because it's shinny and looks expensive. So maybe they are smart enough to just turn it off for a little while but at some point they turn it on to check out what it does and to see if it works. I'm thinking at this point you get an email or txt with the gps location. Drop that into google maps, call the coppers, grab a chainsaw and head to where google leads you.
Am I missing something?

Here in the US IMEI blacklisting is not done on GSM phones. The phones are locked to the carrier though, but the phone can be unlocked.

XDAIIi newbee !

Hello all, 1st post here. I will be aquirring a XDAIIi in a week or two as a relative is replacing his firms pda`s and im getting one of the old units.
I know they were on O2 and I have a T-mobile sim so Id like to unlock it.
I have found the unlock info on this forum and will give that a go.
My question is, what should I check for to make sure it will be running as best it can be and how can I find out what s/ware should be loaded onto it and is there a way of getting a master copy of the original build or will this all be on the software disks that came with it ?
also is there any particular sat nav s/ware that works better than most on the XDAIIi?
I understand the xdaIIi is called something else in places, what is that name ?
sorry there such open questions nut couldnt think how to phrase them in order to do a search.
many thanks in advance, Lee.
Moving to alpine.

I have sucessfully unlocked three of my firm's old Alpine's, aka XDA IIi, using the file in this post, All in one SIM unlock tool, personally i found the earlier version more successful, but you may be OK with the newer version. The biggest thing i would say is to have patience, when you run it, it will seem to finish and nothing has happened. Wait until you receive a message saying it has been unlocked, and then soft reset.
Only other advice i can give is to do a hard reset to get it back to factory settings and then when you get a popup saying "Applying customisations in 3 seconds", or something similar, soft reset. This will prevent the O2 stuff being installed, leaving you with more RAM to play with.
Thanks Ive sucsefully unlocked it for t-mobile, fantastic. just need to find out what else I can do to improve this pda.
Don't try to improve it
as is it is one of the best ever made OK yes it restricted because of only running 2003SE but it runs it dam fast. I have a friend that has a Orbit (the latest one by O2 thats the equivilent of the XDA IIi and mine is as fast as his and he ditched the crappy sat nav software that came with it to go back to TT6, ref sat nav software it runs TT 6 fine I have it on mine and have no problems whatso ever.

Autoconfigurator Network Settings

I found it a long time ago on here, but i cant find it again.. ive been searching for a like a week, and am about to give up.. any one know where it is?
the thing im talking about, when you put your sim into the unlocked kaiser, it pops up saying "You're using Tmobile, would you like to download the settings?" etc.. and then sets it up automatically, and restarts it.
Someone had it as a cab file, and i had it a long time ago, just looking for it again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

HTC TyTn 2 - Some Info on GUI for Newbie

Hi,
I have a HTC TyTn 2. Its on orange, and the details of it are:
ROM Version: 1.81.61.2 WWE
Radio Version: 1.27.14.32
Windows Mobile 6 Proffessional
I find it really boring and am looking for something to spice up the GUI.
I seen software on here called Cube. I was wondering if it actually works, and if there are any implications or lost functions related to installing it.
This is my first post, so i dont really have a clue what it is.
Also my phone is a works phone so it needs to be stable and retain all the Origigal functions.
Can anyone suggest anything??
Thanks
Gaz
There are some versions of the original "cube" as produced by HTC, which can be re-used on various devices for which it wasn't designed.
However, a number of our fellow members have written good or better 3rd party imitations of the cube launcher - try searching for cube and having a look at some of those ones.
IMHO the cube only has limited function, and you can do better with a well configured "Today" screen. There are hundreds of threads on modifying your today screen, and many screenshots for insipiration. Have a look at some of those.
At the end of the day, if you mess up your phone software wise, you can always "hard reset" which will reset to factory conditions, wiping all of your dodgy software off.

I notice that this is your first post. A friend of mine once said the enemy of "good" is "better".
It is important to remember that you are about to consider messing with an expensive "phone". It is possible to make it (read the MANY threads here) work less like a phone than you might want.
If you did that (messed up) to your phone - how upset would you be...can you be without it for a couple of days while you sort things out?
Make sure that you read the WIKI/STICKYs at the top of the messsage board. It is interesting reading acually. If you have a hard time with them you need to leave your phone alone. If you understand what they are saying, then considering a change to your phone might not be too difficult.

Yeah - I realized that I made it sound scary - but I wanted to convey (since it was specified that this is a work phone and has to maintain the original stuff...) that there was some risk - that reading was required and should be done before jumping off and trying things and then having the phone not available.
But - honestly - if what I said "scares" you - you probably ought not be messing with your "work phone" - don't you think?

I want to add
2008-04-29 Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid v2 5.2.19716/5.2.19700
to my phone.
My question is do i need to upgrade to WM 6.1 first, or does this do it for me??
Do i need to do a sim unlock first??
Do i need to CID unlock first??
Ive done the reading of the wiki's but im not too sure!
Please help
Then you haven't read the wikis all the way through..
Also if that is a work phone I wouldn't flash any rom on it. (which duttys is a rom)

Yes you will need to do all of the above, but TBH if you are after retaining all of the orignial functions of the phone then a flashed ROM is about as far away from that as you can be. It adds a lot of extras in removes a lot of bloatware etc. To answer your question yes when you flash a ROM it will auto upgrade you to WM6.1
EDIT: Beat me to the puch there Chumley
mmmn.
May be you guys are right, leave the thing alone. Its just so boring though.
It is a works phone. I have to use it to access corporate network internet pages, and to telnet into certain systems. Also they are supposed to be able to track us from them via the GPS inside.
Do you think changing the ROM would be a bit dodgy???
Are there any other options to make it a bit more fancier, the thing is so dull, but Duttys Rom looks cool.

Again , Look at the page I told you about in the fourth post. Home plugin, HTC Home Customizer, Point UI , Spb Mobile Shell. These are all window dressing and will not effect the function of your phone like a rom switch ( good and bad ) will Look here for inspiration
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336013
if you are just after the "dutty look" then there is no need to flash a whole rom just to achieve that "look". you can just change you theme, install apps, change the skins etc, and you phone will look way cooler, in fact you may even become more attractive to the opposite sex
Cheers,
Just put the Slither C++ Cube thing on. Its sweet.
