Hi, I couldn't find it with a brief search, so if it was allready discussed, please point me the right direction...
The problem is when you connect your Diamond to USB, you will get 3 options (ActiveSync, Disk Drive and Internet Sharing) but immediately after that the USB connection popup appears which I usualy don't carre, but if I want to swith to Disk Drive Mode I have to hide it with the "Hide" button and if I miss... simply it is useless
It only apperas if ActiveSync was the previous setting and that I use a lot... so is there a way to hide that popup forever ? so that it will connect in the background and never show up... then It would be much easier to choose from those three options without the popup in the way
Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC and uncheck Ask about connection type when I connect. BTW, I think this is a ROM specific problem. I'm using the stock ROM and never saw that dialog.

But I want to be asked about connection type when I connect. I just want to get rid of the smaller USB connetion popup... And you're right, I didn't come up on the stock ROM
Go to Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Check "Enable advanced Network functionality"
I noticed that unchecking this option brings up this Popup...

if I check it, then my Windows Mobile Device Center can't connect with Diamond
The real problem
The real problem here is that the device starts to connect right away when you plug in the USB, regardless of whether you select an option or not. It does not wait for you. Although it displays the selection dialog, but before you can choose from the options it has already started connecting. This happens in the background in case of Mass Storage / Mode modes, but brings up the Connecting to host popup if you have previously used ActiveSync mode.
When you finally change to another mode in the selection dialog, you in fact change the connection of an already active ActiveSync / Mass Storage / Modem connection. Thus the device must STOP the current operation, switch to another mode and RESTART the usb connection again - which often fails. Replugging the device usually helps, but it makes the whole approach pointless.
The correct way of operation would be not to connect before you select how you want your device to be used. It should WAIT until you select one of the options and then CONNECT.
I don't know if there is a way around this I need this dialog but hate that the device connects before I click on one of the options. On Nokia phones nothing happens until you choose. That is the correct way of doing it, not a nice dialog that fails every second time.

If your PC is "seeing" your device but Activesync is not:
Make sure that you are running Activesync 4.5.
Change your USB to PC Settings (Start>Settings>Connections Tab>USB to PC) while your device is hooked up to your PC to see if that triggers the recognition.
Check your Activesync Connection Settings (File>Connections I think) and make sure that Allow USB Connections is selected.
Disable your firewall on your PC, if you can connect then, you need to enter exceptions in AS to get past this restriction.
Another thing to check: Check your Network Card Settings (Start>Settings>Connections Tab>WiFi>Network Adaptors Tab).
Tap on Remote-NDIS Host. Make sure that User Server Assigned IP address is selected.
I had a similar problem once. Turned out is was my own fault.
I had manually disabled the network connection Activesync needs to detect the Kaiser. This might be relevant for your issue:
On your computer goto 'Network Connections' (via 'Control Panel', assuming you have XP)
Connect the Kaiser to the computer
Enable the disabled network connection
You might want to switch to 'Tiles' view. The third line will read 'Windows mobile-based device'. That network connection needs to be enabled.
Good luck!

This trick helped me
for mine, I had to disable the "advanced network functionality" under Settings -> connections -> USB to PC before it would sync.
Same hint helped me to to uncheck the tab for the "advanced network functionality". No clue why.
Regards
ME HELPED THIS TWO THINGS :
1.
Another thing to check: Check your Network Card Settings (Start>Settings>Connections Tab>WiFi>Network Adaptors Tab).
Tap on Remote-NDIS Host. Make sure that User Server Assigned IP address is selected.
AND THEN THIS :
2.
Change your USB to PC Settings (Start>Settings>Connections Tab>USB to PC) while your device is hooked up to your PC to see if that triggers the recognition.
THAAAANKS !
OK I tried everything and cannot sync with my corporate PC work (XP with SP2).
I cannot get a local network LAN address on the Tilt regardless if I use NDIS or not and regardless if I provide the DNS server address or not it insists on its default mobile IP.
Funny enough "My Mobile" works through "Connect IP" to the default IP address 169.254.2.1
I tried almost all settings and nothing worked. On top I contacted MS just to receive a hotfix for the USB-2-NDIS drivers which didn't work either.
ANY idea anybody?
I also get the mysterious 80072EFD error from activesync 4.5.
PS: At home I can sync with the company server over the internet connected to my W2K SP4 workstation without any problem.
See attached screenshots
hmm my laptop recognizes my phone...its says its connected..but it just wont sync any ideas why>?
running vista btw

This was my problem as well. I had disabled the network connection, but could not find it any more in Network Connections (on my PC). I ended up having to run the ActiveSync installer msi and telling it to repair. That fixed things nicely.

I had that problem until I installed a flashy new NEC PCI USB 2.0 Adapter card in my PC and stopped using my motherboards onboard VIA (Appolo Pro chipset) USB 1.1 ports. The Activesync 4.5 connections are now far more reliable and I can connect both with or without advanced networking functionality ticked. It looks as if the type/quality of USB port in the PC has alot to do with things.
Now the remaining annoying issue with AS 4.5 I have is that when transferring large wmv files to my TyTN IIs storage card (or even internal memory), the progress bar that appears to indicate the file is transferring never gets to the far right side but always resets back to the beginning (sometimes several times when part way along during the transfer). Is this behaviour which other users of Kaisers connected to Win XP machines have observed? Can anyone throw some light on what's going on to cause this?
transferring large files/data fails

That's actually a known issue with USB. A std. USB driver connection through AS (regardless what version) will time out after 4 something seconds which may not be enough to write a file to your device/storage card. Best money I ever spent was for Softick Card Export II. It gives you the possibility to either active sync or "card export" data. Card export will enable your storage card as removable drive (just like with a card reader) an you can copy all data you want. Kinda slow but reliable. I just transferred 5 MP3 CD's on my storage card without any problems.

Thanks for the tip with that software. I'm not that concerned that I'm willing to fork out money though Just to clarify things, the files do still get across without any problem or failure (and no Activesync disconnects now), it's just the progress bar doesn't correctly indicate whats going on. FWIW the progress bar progresses for far more than 4 seconds before resetting back to the beginning probably 30 seconds or so but I've not timed it. Have you, tyguy, or other users, observed this behaviour with the Kaiser under XP or does the progress bar behave itself for everyone else?
My process bar fluctuates all over the place. Indicating 30 secs, 4 min, back to 20 secs guess it's as accurate as an hourglas, nice animation though - LOL
thanks
thanks this Worked for me on HD2.
There is probably a simple fix for this so I'm going to ask. When I have my phone connected to my computer via USB i am unable to surf the net on my phone or get weather updates...however...i can still recieve calls and get and send text messages. Is there a way to make it so that web browsing and weather tab updates are still functional while the phone is connected to the computer?
I've wondered this also. In addition I usually get a #777 error, complaining about the lack of a data connection.
Go to "mobile device settings" in your Windows Mobile Device Center and check the box that says "Allow data connections on device when connected to PC."
any idea how to do this on activesync? what you mentioned is for vista
oh im sorry i didnt realise you didnt have vista. I think there should be similar settings in the active sync. Probably in connection settings :/
Activesync>Connection Settings. Check "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
just got it.
you connect your diamond to pc with activesync, open connection setting and change the "this computer connect to" to "automatic".
and you need to tick the box "allow USB connection" as well.
Everytime I plug my phone into a USB connection I used to be able to to select 'USB flash drive' - 'activesync' or ' modem'.
Today I tried modem and it didn't work, unplugged it and replugged it to go back to a flash drive and it went straight to modem.
Now I cannot get it to connect as a USB flash drive!
Any ideas?
Check your USB to PC settings under the Connection Settings to see if you have the "Ask me first about USB connection type..." unchecked. If it's unchecked, then recheck it. Can't think of anything other than that..
Thanks for the suggestion, tried every combination of settings I could in that menu and still just goes straight to internet connection sharing modem.
Tried it in a different PC, same thing.

You have to do in your PPC not PC, go to USB to PC in setting menu of PPC and check there.
Ciao, Andrea
For some reason I dont seem to be able to browse web via my mobile browser while device is connected to Activesync (USB cable)
I've checked Allow Wireless Connection and disabled high speed syncing in Conenctions USB>PC on my Xperia.
This affects email and internet data connections and apps. In internet explorer and IRIS I get a 403 error.
I have activesync as "Computer connects to Work Network"
When I disconnect from Activesync I can browse as normal.
Having gone through the usual suspects and done a search I can't seem to find anything that addresses this particular iteration of the 403 error so would gratefully accept any suggest
You don't need the "Allow Wireless Connection when connected to the desktop" ticked. (Unless you want to use WiFi on the X1 while plugged in via ActiveSync).
My ActiveSync "This computer connects to" is set to "The internet", not Work Internet.
Allow USB connections.
On the X1,
Got to Settings, Connections Tab, USB to PC.
Make sure ActiveSync (Sync with outlook) is selected, then make sure "Enable advanced network functionality" it ticked.
cheers for your reply Steve. (good collection of apps too)
These are all options I've tried already (think I've tried every combi) and I end up with the same result - as i get not data connection when i connect the USB. If I open IE or IRIS beforehand and then connect as soon as I browse a new page I get the 403.
I'm sure this didnt happen last time I tried to browse this way but have no idea what could have changed. I thought it could be a connection settings thing - IRIS has loads of options for connections and I've tried all of this, all unsuccessfully. IE doesn't appear to have any options.
Anyone know of any tweaks or reg fixes?
duplicate post
one other thing - if I go to conenction amanger and try to activate Data connection while conencted to activesync, I get sent to the Settings > Connections screen. Data connection will not activate.
I can't offer anymore help Don't know what's up with yours.
cheers anyway steve. gonna wager on a reinstall of activesync and also try on my home pc to see if this is any different.
I know GP can block using device as modem/internet sharing, but this would be different so who knows?
interestingly I've just discovered that I'm still receiving emails when this problem occurs. I wonder if something could be preventing http requests?
just to recap, this works when synced with my home PC, but when synced with my works PC I can't access http via 3g/hsdpa, nor through the PC. I can however receive emails.
As the attachment shows, the phone is connected to the HSDPA and Activesync via USB.
I've reinstalled Activesync on this PC, and experienced an intermittent connection following this - however following this short period of activity the connection halted again.
Hi
I did a google search and it seems that the remedy for the "device has malfunctioned" error is to uncheck the advanced network option in usb to pc setting but the rom that I have only flashes the screen with the option and then internet sharing pops up. If I close internet sharing the screen where I am suppose to uncheck advanced network disappears way too fast for input. Any advice? I cant state the rom name as I only have mobile internet at the moment the creator is Ab(forgot the rest)
Moved as not ROM Development.
You can activate the pop up without being connected via usbtopc.
