I am still within the grace period with my diamond, meaning that I have a few more days with which to give it back to orange should I not be happy, no questions asked.
I have updated the ROM and Radio. This has made the device's UI a pleasure to use! I appreciate how much the Diamond is capable of despite its miniscule size also - particular its excellent Opera browser and screen resolution combo.
However, there are some faults which it seems are non-rectifiable and could cause me problems in the long-run:
weak battery
poor speaker volume and clarity
So my question is this - all things considered, what would YOU do? Would you stick with the Diamond or go for an alternative like the Samsung Omnia or Blackberry Bold. I ask you all because no-one knows more about the Diamond than the people here.
I can understand this is a subjective issue, but your thoughts and recommendations are most welcome.
Thanks,
S.
In hindsight of all of the problems I have been having and the lack of Windows Mobile support these days, to be honest, I would probably ditch it. It pains me to say this, and I expect I will get flamed for it, but I cannot deal with the bugs and lack of performance anymore.

well all of my grumbles are perfectly legitimate - annoying things that spoil my enjoyment of this otherwise fabulous phone. It doesnt look like these issues are even being acknowledged by HTC too..
The thing that probably annoys me the most is that I never had these issues (A2DP not working, alarm not functioning etc) with my original HTC Touch, which is a vastly inferior phone.

Instead of the wisecracks, why not suggest ways I can fix the problems I am experiencing with this device... you cant can you? And thats really my problem. You mock me as if I dont have a right to raise these issues, yet I paid good money for a device that now seems is not fit for purpose.
And ditching TF3D is not the answer... TF3D isnt the problem.

So you claim I am making up all my problems?
Yeah GPS works fine, but you can catagorically state there is no lag by a few metres?
You can catagorically state that the camera produces sharp clear images with no fuss?
You can catagorically state that A2DP doesnt have any bugs and works flawlessly? Like I said, sure you can listen to music using A2DP, but try recieving a call and going back to the music...
Many many people report these same problems - they are bugs, but people like you deny them and continue to claim that the HTC Diamond runs flawlessly. It doesnt.

2. no lag at all
3. look again at the pics i posted...not so bad for a PDA camera. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2556974&postcount=21
4. yes, a2dp works perfect (with coreplayer, i didn't even try it with the original player).
5. i can speak for myself only: no problem at all, "0", zilch, nada...

Hmm, not sure why this thread has focussed on the camera thus far - that's not a problem imho.
I would like to hear about interface, battery and speaker issues in particular.
Thanks for the responses though!
You've got to be honest with yourself really... what's the most important thing about a phone to you, and can your needs be met with less headache elsewhere?
This was never going to be a phone for everyone, but for me there is nothing else on the market that comes close... why, because I want all the toys in as small a package as possible, if this phone was even a fraction bigger I wouldn't give it a second glance. Indeed, I'd prefer it even smaller, and the diamond is the first phone of the all singing and dancing variety that's finally been made small enough for me to take the plunge. This makes the things about the phone that irritate me rather superfluous... if I can't tweak around it or find a different app, I just live with it or work around it.
Life, along with mobile phones, isn't perfect; compromises have to be made along the way... get your priorities sorted, and one way or another you'll get the answer you require.

I'm very much interested in buying this device, but after reading all the threads here and Petition...I'm totally confused.
Can anyone please sum it up ? whats going on? Should i buy it or not? Video playback issue is been solved or not?
I don't have any other device in my mind with the same specifications..
Please help me out.
Yeah im debating whether i should keep mine or not.. Seems like this video driver thing wont ever get resolved by HTC, who knows? .. Maybe when another phone that has the same chipsets releases, a developer from XDA can extract some stuff from there.. but it looks like its not going to be any time soon. Sorry for being pessimistic but I feel like i am being realistic here. HTC has no desire to fix a phone thats been out for some time now when by next year there will be an upgraded version of the phone.
Only question is... What phone should i swap it for? the Iphone? blahhhh....
Definately get it, although there are a few small nags with it, such as the video problem its still a fantastic device and just so much better than anything else out there IMO.
The GPS is fantastic, its very fast and very stable with the Cooked ROM such as Schaps or duttys. I have never had it crash on me yet and ive owned it over 2 months now. Ive only ever had to reset for planned things such as program installs etc.
Overall its a really superb device and i cant recommend it enough!
+1. Best phone I've ever used.
I love my TyTN II/Tilt.
I like my Kaiser but if you dont need GPS then you why not think about a Hermes? i personally like it a whole load better because there is a lot bigger mod scene with the Hermes. Also a slight drawback at the min is lack of sim unlock for the Kaiser so am using it as my second back up phone. My oppinions may change mind once i get it unlocked and use it more. will keep you posted
sean pint- just goto ebay and search for kaiser/tilt unlock. Once you find a seller make sure he has good feedback and buy it. I got mine for 15 dollars. Ive heard of people paying 10. It took about 6 hours for the seller to email me the unlock code. Simple as that. Good luck!!
I searched and researched for 6 months before buying my TyTN II. I love it. Sure the video driver issue is frustrating but you know what? Even with that issue its the best PDA/Phone available.
I have had mine for almost 2 months and have never had a lockup or any other problem that made me reset it.
I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything.
If you do decide not to get it, I will echo the suggestion made earlier to get a Hermes. There is A LOT available for that device too.... but for me the Kaiser is the kit to get.
PS: The phone in my experience is OUTSTANDING.
Thanks for the Feedback guys....
Can anyone elaborate more? like what kind of issue one can face with video playback? Like does it really lag bad ? or it just bearable? Or video is just lagging in one specific format?
Does this video issue get solved if i change to third party firmware?

I would not buy this device again. It might look cool but it can give you too many frustrations. My TyTN I is infinitely more reliable.
If you are a very easy-going rich individual or a gadget freak that just has to buy this cool looking device, you should get it. It looks good, the GPS works well, wireless, etc, all good.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
You might also get other problems. My Kaiser for instance doesn't register fast consecutive keystrokes of the same letter. So I open PIE, I type www.google.com and it comes out as ww.gogle.com (Before anyone tells me to change the Up/Down key delay in the settings, I've already done that and the problem is always there). It's sooo much fun getting the cursor back there to correct it!!!
Browse the forums, you'll get an idea of how many bad surprises the Kaiser might hold for you, thanks to the lack of quality control by HTC. Sorry to disappoint you but if stability is your concern, don't listen to the voices luring you to buy this thing.

I have entered in bold my views on the above posters comments.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
There is an art to getting very acceptable quality with the camera. So good quality is possible and takes better semi-light pictures than TyTn I - see here: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/12/california-thro.html
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
My problems were solved via the latest Core Player. You just need to get the settings right and most videos are fine.
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
Don't use that much though my Duke Nukem is working just fine!!
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
There is a very easy fix in CAB form available for the PIE problem that takes less than 10 minutes to solve.
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
Never had any need for it so I cannot comment on this.
Back to me again!!
I use both TyTn I and TyTn II. My TyTn II a non branded vHTC device was smooth, fast and usable straight from the box. Video has been sorted by Core Player (latest). Yes the camera takes practice and you need to understand the auto focus (or else you'll get fuzzy pics - but once you get the hang of it it's better than TyTn I)
I was re-setting my TyTn I every two weeks. I have yet to crash my Kaiser and only soft reset after application installation if necessary. I have NEVER had to hard reset the device in several months of ownership.
I would advise against branded devices with loads of bloatware that can cause all sorts of slow downs on any device.
This is the first device I have been able to accept without endless mods and tweaks just to get in semi acceptable. Of course I have done several tweaks, but that's 'cos I enjoy doing it!!
To be honest, my general view is that folk have fewer issues with the Kaiser than the TyTn I and certainly fewer alignment and screen problems. Hanging and freezing were common on TyTn I, I hardly see that on the Kaiser and when it does it seems that if you leave it for a couple of minutes it sorts itself ou rather than needing a soft reset.
YES, if you read here or any of the Fora, you will see folk talking about nothing but problems. This is a FALSE picture - of course folk post their problems, that's what the forum is for!!
I have been around here since before the TyTn I and on balance I would not hesitate in opting for the Kaiser, though I still like the TyTn I Hermes as a very capable device - but it needs love and a lot of tweaks!!
Mike
Thanks for the input guys.
But seriously if you are buying a device by keeping in mind that it will run each and everything which you throw on it, than i think no one will buy this device...Its not about rich and all...I'll be getting this device as my primary fone and it will be performing everywork, from excel to presentation...Emails/browsing.
But after reading all the reviews and all its totally holding me back to get this device. I was more inclined to "HTC Advantage" but due to its size its holding me back..i just can't carry that brick everywhere with me..where as TytnII was the perfect for me...but its drivers are making major issue here.
I don't want to go with TytnI....i want to stick to the latest phone because in few months or so new WM 7 will be launching soon ..and when WM 7 going to Launch than no one will give a flying**** to tytnI ....
What i'm looking in device is:
Sliding QWERTY keyboard
GPS
Fast Processor above 500Mhz
I never thought to look on ebay actually. Is it the same system to unlock a tilt aswell as a vario III. just thinking because the tilt is american and the Vario III is on T-Mobile in the uk. Anyone recomend a good seller on ebay?
al just thought i would try a virgin sim and that works but when i put my 3 sim in it says its locked. rather strange

And HTC does nothing. - cause this is not a problem right? ^^
I Hope I get som reactions @ HTC.
Damn.. even with the IE fix posted on this site, it's still not as smooth as that.

Excellent video. Shows up the issue with IE scrolling right away
I doubt HTC will do anything though, they only care about shipping out old products whilst making new cash-cows.
I bet we'll soon hear rumours of the "Tytn III" with high speed video and slimmer design.
This is definitely my last HTC purchase, hell the iGroan looks way way better now (even though hardware limited, locked in, and costly)
Alas not having a video camera, I cant make a video. It would be nice if someone can post a similar video of the camera issues (comparing camera jitter at various resolutions, and speed)
The stockholders have our money, why the hell would they care about us?
Loyal customers asking for things to be 'set right' do not get the attention of chairmen and stockholders, quarterly profits do.
If enough loyal customers never buy an HTC product again, that MIGHT effect profit enough to grow a concern (but they will not know why, and will never connect it to those who begged for a fix.)
Based on their past response and handling of the situation, potential loss is the only thing that can grow attention.
I'd say
1) A lawsuit that could generate bad publicity
2) Very poor reviews for new products outlining issues like this.
Could work well on gaining attention from those in charge, neither of those has been done above. I do know of developers in HTC who would like to work on a fix, but the management will not devote resources on it. The development team IS aware of the issue from quotes and responses I've seen. It's up to us to somehow push the chairmen to want to devote resources on the development of a fix.
Sorry for poor sentence structure, I'm very tired.
Added it to the wiki:

BTW does anyone have a link to that fix? Haven't heard of a fix for the poor scrolling yet.
Great work, actually the first video showing that the performance is actually worse than on older devices.
Hopefully it results in more awareness of the video driver issue on the tytn ii.

come on. let's be honest. this device is great. a real power house. period.
complaining about video? coreplayer is about to release special qtv version of their player ANY MINUTE now...
complaining about camera? nothing can be done. hardware is limited and camera is just an additional option anyway.
3D gaming? ... ... dunno what to say. real game loving freaks owns psp from day one. (or since last sale...)
wait till cp for kaiser, opera mobile 9 and windows mobile 6.1 will be released. then we will talk.
this device main purpose is communication and nothing can beat it at it.
to clarify- I am not a HTC agent or whatever.
I'm just simply getting tired of overreacting and all the hate against HTC. I never heard of people talking about taking a dump on nokia's lawn cuz of crappy gps in N95.
don't get me wrong- I would be over the moon with drivers sorted, but please... give those guys a break. they actually never reffered to kaiser as a gaming device like nokia does on it's n series. I've bought my Vario III because it is succesor to my previous Vario II. gps integrated, 3meg cam (not that bad in day light and soft from polaris) tilting keyboard and the list goes on...
Yes. I am happy.

Go and try to scroll in your windows folder with file explorer. Or use TomTom to show you the navigated route. Enjoy.
To be honest, it's not about gaming at all. Not about video playing at all. It's about scrolling in IE, in file explorer, smooth display in TomTom, in Camera. These operation on older devices are much more smoother comparing to this brick. Havent you seen the videos? Dear HTC agent?
The point is, that our devices seriously underperform compared to older device due to a lack of drivers (!). This means we've been sold devices that look as if they'd outperform older devices from the spec, but don't when it comes to reality - and it's not because the hardware is not there or anything, it's merely because a driver has not been delivered.
That's like you buy a cool computer advertised with a state-of-the-art DX10 Graphicscard which is deactivated due to a lack of drivers and all the rendering is done by the crappy onboard chip. Wouldn't like it would you?*
* Analogy is somwhat impaired as you can always just get drivers for the Card, but still....
Come on
I dont like paying $500 for a Tilt when the 8525 for half that works much better!! Get a clue!
Probably his first device. Doesn't know what to expect.
That said though I'm sure in a moment he'll reply & we'll learn that he is the mastermind behind windows mobile.

Now I'm begining to wonder what's going on here!!!!!!!
I have no scrolling issues in windows, or viewing route in Tomtom.
I also have very few videos that don't play snoothly either.
SO and this may be an important observation. Is there a proportion of devices out there that are not working properly (possible ROM or other software setup - maybe even a hardware problem) and that others DO NOT show these problems.
On mine I simply cannot see the slowness others report. Mine is lag free and resposive. I saw some posts about the screen rotate times being slow, but mine is virtually instant.
Maybe this is what we should establish. Is it only some devices that are having problems.Compared to my 8525 my speeds are fantastic.
I notice that this odd mixture of some folks saying they have excellent speed and smooth loading and performance compared to others who seem to find the opposite - is apparent on several other PDA sites too.
Mike
EDIT: Just saw the post below. Again I have not noticed the camera being slow (except when really dark). Taking videos I dont do much of but let's say compared to TyTn it is about the same.
I will say I had a slow scroll in PIE but that was solved with the installation of the older PIE dll.
Happy? No!
I don't watch movies or play graphics intensive games. However I do use my phone as a PDA and take pictures and small videos and suck. Try scrolling anything, try taking a picture or small video of your kids. Then come back and tell me how happy you are.
Seems that either you don't actually have a Kaiser or you only use it as a phone.
Lately the camera performance on the Kaiser is really frustrating. It's almost unusable in low'ish light. With video or stills. Sure it's been like this the whole time but lately I've really been frustrated. I would like to use the camera.
To all the people who say a camera on a phone is not important I say go back in your cave. It's 2008 BTW and technology is surpassing you, get out of the way.
Sorry I'm done. Let's not trash this thread since it's call "Happy User Thread". There are alot of other threads we can do that in. As much as it's going to urk us to know that non power users will be posting in this thread oblivious to what is possible.

For all I know it may be 80% of users who have these problems. I don't in any major way or anything that by changing settings has not been fixed. I'm not trying to dismiss the issues you and possibly many others have, but it may have a bearing on the causes. Perhaps there are hardware flaws for which no amount of ROM changing will solve matters.

I bought my TYTN II in Australia about 3 months ago and the screen redraws are abysmal, the camera is useless in anything less than perfect light. From what I have read every TYTN II is the same, depending on what your expectation is I suppose.

Me too Mike, my experience seems to follow yours. I love my little Kaiser, its a great little device, does all I ask of it, and I'm really pleased with the over all package.
And before others jump in and propose I'm a novice too, my first PDA phone was a Nokia 9000 Communicator, bought years ago. Back then, mods weren't flashing ROM's, or installing CAB's, it was done through programming, and DOS (remember that?) level commands. Or to put it another way, imagine that every tweak etc on the Kaiser had to be done via regedit. So novice, no. Happy user, yes.
I wonder if there are just some units out there that are badly made? Maybe HTC has more 'Friday' phones than most...
c'mon now, what are you talking about The tilt is about a half a step backwards from the 8525. Do the comparisons yourself, from playing movie files, video recording, picture taking in limited lighting, and the graphical redrawing of the ui itself! there's no way in hell should my ipaq Hw6515 out perform the tilt in any of these aspects! The tilt is suppose to be an upgrade from the 8525, but from the performance of it, it's not!
Hi All,
I currently own an HTC magician. I want a new phone with everything the magician has plus GPS, WIFI, more RAM, and a keyboard. The only phone I found that comes close is the Kaiser, but I've heard such bad things about the video driver problem.
Video is not the biggest issue for me, but should I not buy the phone and support HTC who refuses to cooperate?
Do I have any other options with those specs?
Thanks,
Daniel
I have a Kaiser and I am very happy with it, because I can do so much with it. However if a bit of lag annoys you greatly it may not be for you.
Surur
NO. Wait some time whether the issue get resolved. Its not only the video - the whole phone is slow. You can not browse, rotating you screen. If i make a call with skype, the phone is really very slow and if i slide the keyboard and the screen orientation switches it can take up to minute to be updated - with nothing in background and free mem - only skype running. And until it switches you cant hang up, change the volume...nothing.
To be honest, i regret buying the Kaiser. And if i see how fast a cheap HiPhone can be, omg!
I wonder how HTC can have this on their webpage: More powerful than anything you've seen before, the HTC TyTN II takes communications to the next level.
You have to be blind a live 5years back, for the slogan to be true...
I bought it mainly because of the 3g and wifi and wm6... but there are better solutions then this for 520 euro...
Beware!
wait for kaiser fix
If video is not heavily used, buy it now. I bought it recently and like it very mcuh. But higher performance is still demanded...

better device with 3g, wifi, and wm6? like what?
get the kaiser...it's no slower then any other wm6 device out there and although yes it would be nice if we could play more games, normal res video runs perfectly fine.

This may all be true if you're still using the stock ROM. There are some really smokin' cooked ROMs out there that really speed things up and make the Kaiser a truly enjoyable device.
One other thing, show me a PC that doesn't slow down once in awhile. That's what defrag is for.

So you equate flashing a cooked ROM with clicking the "Defrag" button? One is a feature built into the operating system, the other can void your warranty and potentially brick your device. They're nowhere near the same thing.
I'm telling everybody I know to avoid HTC like the plague. Not so much directly because of the video issues, but because of their lack of accountability. They deliberately released a crippled device in hopes that nobody would notice, and are now working on some half-assed "fix" only because of the publicity that was generated by the XDA community.
Get one. I was in the same boat hesitating about the drivers. I am glad i made my decision. I upgraded from a 8525. Glad i did i have everything i need in one device. GPS Wifi, processing power. Im not sure what the full potential of this chip is supposed to be but its fast. I actually got mine refurbished from att about a month ago. After using it i ended up buying another one today for my wife and paying full price. Im not disatisfied. Definatly waht i would expect out of a 400 dollar phone.
Like most answers, it lives in the question.
"Because of Video Problems". Do you need or want to view videos not converted to 320x240 resolution? If you do need or want that that from your new expensive mobile device, then pass. ---- NO KAISER FOR YOU!
If you want a snappy interface and quick file browsing experience, then wait for the HTC "fixes". But still forget lag-free video at source resolutions above 320x240. ---------- > Get a Kaiser, and hope you can fix it.
Do you want fancy graphical VGA games or anything 3D? Forget the Kaiser.
Do you want a Windows Mobile 6 device that has real GPS, WiFi, 3G, Edge, 2 cameras (one for video calls, one for decent pics), querty keyboard, and bluetooth? And are able to put up with the device doing NONE of those things particularly well, then ----> Get a Kaiser.
I have a Kaiser. I live through its quirks. Its a fun device depending on your definition of "fun".
Do I regret paying $850+ for my device even knowing I was an early adopter? Yes. The device advertised was not the device delivered.
Would I discourage others from buying it at a $200 USD price point? No.
But then again, its up to you and what you expect from your device.
With Schap's ROM (4.31) and Coreplayer 1.2 i needn't a fix for "video pb"
I don't play 3D game.
Do not listen to most of what the naysayers have to say here. I have an iMate K-Jam and now I have an HTC TyTN II. I have done many comparison tests between the two devices. The TyTN II wins HANDS DOWN!!!
Driver problems? What driver problems? I have yet to find any lag on any video except maybe a bit on the camcorder app, but that's not a big issue. I watch full feature movies on Coreplayer and I have used TCPMP and WM Player with wayyyyyyyy BETTER performance than on my K-Jam!!!
Don't even think about it, go right ahead and buy a TyTN II, you will not regret it. Problem is most people drag these devices through their backsides and then they complain about this and that. They replace roms, install and uninstall all sorts of crap and then they wonder why it's acting up!!!
I have had my TyTN II since the 15th January this year and I have not experienced any of the so-called problems mentioned by some in this forum. OK, the battery does get used up quicker, but then again it has so much packed in and you can get 3000 mAH batteries now!!!

Hey is this a HTC deHey is this a HTC dealer Thread?
The TyTN isn’t a finished device. There are much more bugs and “features” which should be avoid.
1 Video – its really slow. I don’t mind games, I even don’t watch video , because I have other devices for this, but if I wan to scroll the internet page, that’s not the speed I have never seen before! Why takes it so long to switch between portrait and landscape?
And the video from the camera I also pretty slow.
2 Speed – I have used a Fujitsu siemens n560. It was MUCH faster even if it was older and has 64mb ram.
3 The keyboard – this was one of the features why I have chosen tytn. But why they do not think if the do anything. Omg where is the ctrl key? How can you copy and paste? I have always to use the pen for it. No they put rather a key for opening the explorer, which I have used twice so far. And why have I to use the fn key to write a comma? And do you like the style of the keys? Its not even possible to write comfortably the last row of keys if you bent the display? And why are the functions of the keys doubled? Its for disabled people or maybe if you bite off some finger bored from waiting? I would expect that I can configure every key not to have three key for OK two for enter…
And maybe try to write any non-English letter – no we are in the world where no others languages exist.
I tell you, they are not selling what they are telling – What you have been told is not what you get.
What is good – the speed of gps starting, If you use quick gps.
Have a look how fast a under $200 device can be! Put Hiphone in youtube and you will know how fast the screen should react and switch.
Its not only about the damn driver, the parts of the phone are not finished. Not if the producer tells you: It’s the best you can get...

which is why you should try a cooked rom. the internet scrolling thing u mention? its a bug in pie, there;s a fix for that......if you decide to stick to pie, cause lets face it, pie is a pile of **** anyways. try opera mini or mobile. oh and btw......i did get my tilt for under $200
as for the OPs question, there are tons of posts here about the performance of these devices (you might also want to look in the upgrading section to see the performance of cooked roms) and I'm not gonna dd anymore to it. At the end of the day, you are the one who has to make the decision, and you are the one who will be using this device, my advice to you is just choose wisely......i took the jump and got it even after hearing about the video issues, and i never regretted it.
Just get a Kaiser and wait till end of March when the drivers will be released.

If you buy this phone you'll be taking a risk. It may be a small risk depending on what you'll have to pay, but a risk nonetheless of not being satisfied. At least you will have made your choice in good conscience and aware of the situation. Truth is we shouldn't have to compare this device to much older ones and say it's better. It shouldn't warrant a comparison at all but since it does there is obviously a problem. There are those that will tell you their TyTN II is "SUPER ACCEPTABLE!" but that's hardly the point. I didn't buy this thing believing it would have acceptable performance. This device is supposed to kick ass and we believe it would if it used the complete architecture of the chip inside. I got mine for $700 and my plan here on out is to just grin and bear it. There isn't an alternative device available yet and HTC has us over the fence on this thing. The anticipated fix is not going to address our concern of enabling the second core of the chip we paid for. I can confirm for you my experiences with the TyTN II and keep in mind this is before I 'dragged it through my backside' by flashing the ROM. (By the way why in the world would it matter whether it's been flashed or how many times programs have been installed/uninstalled?)
- Video playback is fine if my source is 320 X 240. I have always re-encoded my video anyway in an effort to save space and optimize everything. For this reason I didn't know there was a video playback problem right away.
- The camera is almost unusable. I have turned on the on-screen fps display and in sunlight I get ~18fps, in ambient light make that ~4fps and if it's semi dark forget about it. This effects taking pictures and taking video. The video I shoot ends up looking like a blurry mess and any picture I take better be of a stationary subject or else I will usually miss the shot. Interestingly enough the device takes great photos though.
- Screen rotation is a sore subject. I want the thing to be fluid but instead I have to watch it redraw slowly and in seperate pieces.
- Scrolling - it isn't certain that scrolling problem is a result of the missing drivers. I have to say that scrolling isn't very good but there is a fix on this forum to make it more reasonable.
- GPS works great, I've never had an issue with it although it kills the battery fast. Especially fast when using Google maps or live search because then you have the active GPRS data session combined with the gps.
- Battery life - I have a 1600mAH bat and I have to charge it every day but then again I auto download podcasts and such so I am partially to blame. As I understand it the drivers would increase battery life.
That's about it from me. Sorry this post is so long, let me wrap it up. I don't think anyone can tell you to buy or not to buy. You'll just have to make a decision yourself. At least it will be an informed decision, unlike mine.

With all due respect to all you guys complaining about video drivers.. STFU! already.
No one complained until one geeky ass dude bought it up. I have no problems playing my movies on my device or streaming it via orb.com. I get no lag and for god sakes it's a mobile phone not a computer. It surpasses most devices to date. I have no complaint about this phone. This is like my 40th something phone that I've had being that I work for AT&T and they provide me with devices. When the update comes people will still be *****ing about the video drivers. What exactly are you guys trying to watch? Live video feeds from Mars!?
Seriously get the phone you will not be disappointed. For the record my device does not lag when I slide the screen, etc. I've installed Schaps 4.31 best looking ROM to date. Haven't found another ROM that made me want to change.
even with no video drivers, it's still the best branded phone in the US. theres nothing better. (yet)

Awesome! So it is the official AT&T position that we should all install cooked ROMs on our Tilts? Is that what you tell your customers? And it won't void the warranty? That's fantastic news.
Can you please post your store number and employee ID number so your statement can be confirmed with AT&T corporate? Thanks!
I have been reading in this forum ,and many other sites about the Diamond and one would think that this is the worst device ever created.I have one and have been using it for about a week ,I got it as a replacement to the Kaiser and I think that it is a worthy replacement. It can do everything the Kaiser did ,I got used to the keyboard. No device is perfect but I think that all the minor problems are being overblown.
i am using 3dTF without any tweaking and it is working well.
My only comment would be maybe that the battery life is not so great.
I think the Touch Diamond is better than any other device currently available, and it will be for the forseeable future. I suppose people just have different opinions. However, if they don't like the way HTC is going, it makes you wonder why they're using these forums...
But for the £450/$900 you've probably paid out, wouldn't you expect no problems? Or maybe not no problems, but the battery is pretty poor from what I hear, and thats a pretty major concern to me.
But fair enough if you can deal with it, as you say, it's a personal thing.
Rory
I think the niggling problems will be fixed in rom updates anyway.. especially once its released on loads of operators, i think we'll see alot of rom versions around.
Its actually the first phone i can see myself keeping for more than a year.

The thing is that all of the problems that people talk about are problems that I've never lived without or that I can easily cope with. Poor battery? I've always charged overnight anyway. Laggy interface? TouchFLO was laggy too. Random things happening? I'd bet that my Sendo M550 did more random things more often.
Don't forget that, until a year ago, I was still using my Sendo M550 on a daily basis.
Must say that after 2 days of owning my diamond I am hugely impressed - it does everything I want and more - sure, if you are a heavy user and you are going to be away from an electricity supply for more than 12 hours you will have a problem, beyond that I don't see any issues!
I am absolutely ecstatic with my Diamond. I've had it for a couple weeks now and it is by far the best phone I've ever had. Honestly, I think some people just like to *****. A lot of the real complainers have never even used one, and for those that have - I don't know what the hell they've BEEN using that they expect such perfection out of the Diamond.
I think also that a lot of people just don't even understand the concept of mass appeal. If the phone doesn't work exactly the way THEY want it to work then the phone must SUCK.
It's particularly interesting to me because I see the same attitudes in the anti-PC/pro-MAC crowd. I think a lot of people just don't understand the value in a flexible, customizable device. The things that I love about WinMo are the very things others complain about. I like that I can tweak the registry to adjust the touch sensitivity to my preference. Or the flow of animations, etc.
Others expect it to work precisely the way that is best for them out of the gate and don't want to have to tweak it, but they don't seem to consider the reality of the fact that they aren't the only person in the world, and manufacturers have to design products that work for the greates number of users out there...
you can also can read this (sorry for self promoting) but is good to read something good about diamond:

How can I be positive about the device which sucks my battery within 8 hours (as if the GPS was still on) or where I cannot simply remap stupid Home button to Start Menu which I am deeply used to without any weird 3rd party tools like AE Button Plus etc etc... so far this is my first and last htc unless the major issues are fixed. TF3D? Removed, not impressed... I got this for work and not for fancy show-outs in a pub :/
Edit - also forgot about the cathastrophical speaker quality (not the one used in a call, the "loud" one) - my grandma's phone rings better...
czbird - you are clearly unhappy with your purchase - why don't you return it/ sell it and look for something that will be more suitable for your needs?

The power in phones like this are precisely that you CAN do what you want via 3rd party tools. If you want everything to work the way that is best for you (and who really cares about the rest of the buyers, right?), just start your own phone company.
OK, taken into extreme - how'd you like to have to install some crappy freeware to scroll through your contacts? Some features are simply supposed to be built-in
This ain't my first PDA, no need for teaching.

Well... I recall going through quite a few freeware apps, and even some trial versions of purchase software, to scroll through my contacts in the way I wanted to scroll through them (i.e. with my finger w/ kinetic scrolling instead of the tap tap tap of my stylus). It's not like your Home button doesn't work - it doesn't work the way YOU want it to. And that's what 3rd party apps are for.
Still misunderstood - I was used to assign special functions to the buttons only by tweaking the scan code settings in the registry, now the problem with the Diamond is, that it ignores whatever I try to set up the key to, as there are some htc handlers which deal with these keys. Now these have to be overriden by another keyboard handlers which will finally give me the possibility to change the key behavior. This way is quite complicated, annoying to set up, and the extra software also unnecessarily eats device resources...

The Touch Pro is the business-equivalent of the Diamond. You've got the PPC world's equivalent of a Ferrari, and you're trying to use it like a tractor. The Diamond was designed with the pub in mind...
Well put Dark Fire.
Surely its primary use is as a business phone, if you want a phone to pull out in the pub, you get one everyone knows is amazing like the N96 (when released), or stupidly the iPhone.
Nobody knows what the Diamond is, unless you know about PPC's.
Rory
hate all this futile winning! if you bought it and u are not happy with it send it back! stop complaining! yes, it's not perfect but i don't dare to think how would you react after buying an iPhone.
i don't get it. ppl come here to ask (sometimes stupid) questions BEFORE they buy a diamond. i can't stand that they came back after buying it and keep complaining.
look at all the ppl here that are learning one from each other, look and read about the already new ROM and all the tweaks. try some. take yr balls in you hand, accept the risk of bricking it and flash it!! than come back and tell us how you made it or why you didn't. be useful! nobody is interested in yr complains.
i begin to think that three are only 2 ways with diamond: love it or hate it!

More of the people that I know, know about the Touch Diamond than the N96 (probably my fault). TBH, the only reason I know about the N96 is because one of my friends has the N95. And as I've said before, most people I know think that people with an iPhone are retards.
The HTC Touch Diamond is perfectly designed for the pub - it's amazing, and rare, so you can show it off to satisfy people's curiosity instead of just showing it off to look cool (which makes you look sad). Also, as the Touch Diamond is not well known, it's less likely to be stolen (wouldn't you rather go for an iPhone than a random phone you've never heard of, with unknown specs?). Also, the Touch Diamond has a distinctive design, so your mates at the pub will be more likely remember the device and associate you with it.
Also, as it has been shown before, business people generally like keyboards and the general public generally hate keyboards. Therefore the Touch Diamond is not a business device. Business people also prefer complex UIs, which can show all of their calendar events (or fulfil any other random but important business requirements) - simplified stylish UIs are just not normally suitable for business...but they can still be appreciated after several pints of Magners.
Normal users dont use the calendar on their phone. They dont use the web browser, then done have tasks, all they use it for is calls, texts and entertainment.
And, saying its been proved that normal users don't like keyboards is total crap, we have however proved that almost every phone ever released has a keyboard of some type, so theyre used to it.
Plus, I bet the Diamond as its network branded variants will be in the Business type section of all the stores and brochures, much like the Touch, Dual and Cruise were.
