Icon Viewer and Change PTT Button Icon - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

This is kind of a small thing, but when I remap the Buttons in Settings I thought it would be nice if the button icon reflected the actual program to which it was mapped or an icon of my choosing. I know, “picky, picky, picky”.
I noticed that in the various keys there is an icon sub-key which lists the program and an offset value where the icon is located for that program.
All that you have to do is enter the location of the icon and the offset.
Easy, except that the offset is not always the same location and the icon may be in something other than the .exe like a Control Panel applet (.cpl) or .dll or you may want a different icon than the standard one.
The solution that worked for me was to use a program called RViewer by Vicott Wong to look at the icons. He also has an icon resource file that has some sample icons in it that you could use. There are some other resource files listed also.
http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=80127 for the program and a tutorial.
His program will extract icons and do some other stuff but all I wanted it for was to find where the icons were in a .exe, .dll or .cpl. which his program does and allows you to browse to find the icon and the offset. He shows in his tutorial how to change shortcut icons also, which may be even more fun than this.
I wanted to change three icons.
The first was the envelope on Button 2 since I had mapped that to a [Toggle Screen] process which is included with Wisbar Advance 3 by Chris McKay. (http://lakeridgesoftware.com/ ) This turns the screen completely off when desired.
The [Toggle Screen] was controlled by a WAProc.exe program in the Programs folder but it had no icons I wanted to use so I chose the one from Backlight.exe in the windows folder. In the “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C2\Icon” sub-key I put “\windows\Backlight.exe, 101” in the String Value.
The next one was Button 6 which I assigned to Comm Manager and assigned the String Value “CommManager.exe, 101” in the 40C6 Icon sub-key.
The last one was button 6 (Hold) which I assigned to Voice Command. The 40C7 sub-key didn’t have an Icon sub-key so I just copied and pasted the one from 40C6 and gave it a String Value of “\Windows\VoiceCommand_PPC.cpl, 1” (Of course, no quotes used in the String Values)
WARNING: Once you start looking at all the different icons available you can easily waste a couple of hours just looking around.
Here is the result when I go to Buttons on settings:

Using cLaunch

My first thread, so here goes.
This guide was available in the General section under the 'How to make your xda look like an iphone' thread but a seperate thread on using cLaunch seemed sensible.
I also wanted to distance myself from the iPhone thread in light of such posts as this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1100271&highlight=apple#post1100271 as I had posted some ecreen shots myself which I have since removed
cLaunch is a fantastic piece of freeware. I thought I should put together a quick user guide. It is the perfect piece of software to create a custom today screen. I like it because it allows me to create custom links from my today screen using custom icons. I have added some screen shots at the bottom of the post. You can see my photo contacts at the bottom of the page as I have removed the 'contacts/calendar' softkeys using dcinobar.
Where do I get it?
Download cLaunch from here: http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=300
. . . and check the website here: http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~welic/claunch.html
(There are also some great example screen shots on this site - I will try and upload some example screen shots myself shortly.)
Install the cLaunch cab file by copying to your device (eg: \program files\) and then execute by tapping on it.
Activating cLaunch
The plug-in can be activated by going to Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items and check 'cLaunch'.
Exit the personal today settings and return to your today screen where you should be able to now see cLaunch tabs and a portion of the today screen with a border around it.
Press and hold the stylus on the portion of the screen occupied by cLaunch. This will take you into the cLaunch settings (Screen shot 1). You may also access the settings via the today items menu (Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items, highlight cLaunch and tap OPTIONS).
Options
Once in the settings select 'Options'. Options allows you to change how cLaunch appears on the today screen. It's settings affect all the individual tabs in the same manner. It is used to set the height of cLaunch within the today screen and the number of tabs in use. These are the tabs you will see:
About - Ver12.03 is the most recent version. Cai Systems 2003.
Language - English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese GB
Main - Select which Tabs you wish to appear within cLaunch. You may use up to 8 selecting them by placing a tick in the box. You may also overtype the titles and change the tab names as required. (Screen shot 2)
System - Here you may set the height of cLaunch. This dictates how much of the today screen it occupies. It may take some trial and error in order to adjust the height and get the desired affect. 'Menu bar enable' makes the tabs you have selected visible on the screen. You can also tap 'Menu bar at bottom' which will shift the tabs below the cLaunch window instead of being located at the top. 'Settings icon enable' creates a small system access icon at the right hand side of your tabs. This is for quick access to the cLaunch settings. 'Arrow icons enable' adds small arrows within cLaunch in the event that you have more items added to the today screen than can be displayed at once. This icon enables you to scroll through the selected tab. You may also select 'Tap empty spaace advance to next group' which allows you to toggle through your tabs by just tapping the screen. (Screen shot 3)
Tab - These settings all relate to your chosen tabs within cLaunch. Increase tab width if the titles of your tabs are lengthy. You may also select to have a border around the plug-in if desired. The options will place a border around the whole plug-in and and around the tabs. There is also an option for 'Tab border 3D'.
Settings icon - This allows you to skin the settings icon if it was selected within the system settings. You may import your own icon using the file path field. Icon should be 18x18 bitmap.
Help - cLaunch quick tips.
Press the tick in the top right hand corner to exit Options and go back to the main cLaunch tabs page. If you have changed the names of any of the tabs you will be able to see the tabs at the top of the screen. You will see all the tabs even though you may have only selected one or two within Options/Main.
Adding items to cLaunch
In order to add items to cLaunch select 'Add'.
Click on the ... next to File Path and browse to the link of the application you wish to ad to cLaunch. Use the .lnk files within your start menu and sub menus. EG windows\start menu\programs\calculator.lnk (select OK) - to add the calculator.
If you wish to use a custom icon select 'Change icon'.Browse to the location of your icons. Store them within windows or within the storage card. You may also use icons from an .exe or .dll or .cpl. Use the appropriate icon handle or browse by tapping 'next'. You will be able to see the icon on the screen at this point. (select OK)
Repeat to add all of the require applications and documents. You can create shortcuts to .lnk, .exe as well as to documents and folders.
If you wish to create a link to your storage card use the following file path: \storage card
This will open the root directory of your storage card using the native file explorer.
Settings
The 'Options' relate to the cLaunch settings as a whole, but each tab may also be configured seperately. Make sure that the tab you wish to personalise is selected and tap 'Settings' (Screen shot 5). These settings relate only to this tab. Here you can set the icon size for the tab, enable or disable the icon name and the height of the text. The 'Margin' tab allows you to organise the icons within the tab. (Screen shot 4)
'Skin' allows you to skin the tab. Note that the skin must be a bitmap and of the correct size. cLaunch will stretch the background if it is too small. 'Skin2' allows you to skin the icons for the arrows.
'Import' allows you to import an entire menu into the selected tab. For example you can import everything from \windows\start menu\programs\. This will save time over adding each item individually.
Once you are happy with your settings you may wish to make some last minute changes to the order of the items within the tab. The main cLaunch page has the options to organise the shortcuts you have added.
Add - Used to add the link to cLaunch.
Edit - Highlight an existing shortcut and select Edit to change the file path or icon.
Delete - Highlight and select delete to remove an shortcut.
Cut - Highlight and select cut to cut a shortcut to the clip board.
Copy - Copy any selected shortcut from desired tab.
Paste - Paste the shortcut you have copied/cut.
Select All - Selects all shortcuts on the visible tab.
Up - Used to arrange the order. Highlight your shortcut and then select Up to move it up the list of shortcuts.
Down - Used to arrange the order. Highlight your shortcut and then select Down to move it down the list of shortcuts.
Select mulitple - Allows you to highlight and pick several shortcuts and deal with them together once selected.

Here is some further information which I shall try and elaborate on further when I have time.
Sometimes when you are using a theme with a bright colour the icon background will also display this colour when pressed. To change the colour of the background when you touch an icon use 'Base Hue Express' available on the following site:

If you wish to use greyscale enter the program and select 'Menu' and the 'Use Greyscale'.

cLaunch is agreat piece of freeware and very customisable. I have found that most of my knowledge of this program has been as a result of trial and error. And if you don't like it go into the cLaunch settings select 'Options' and on the main About page there is a tab to uninstall!

Any idea why I get "cLaunch is not a valid Pocket PC application" when I try to install on Cingular 8525?

Download the cab file from http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~welic/claunch.html and copy it to your device, for example place it in \windows\program files\ and then browse to that folder using your file explorer and tap on the file. It will then ask you where you wish to install. Select 'Device'.
If you have downloaded an .exe you can run it on your pc without the device connected and then simply extract the cab file from within your pc's activesync folders and then copy it to the device.
I guess you are getting that error as you are attempting to run an .exe file intended to be run on a pc desktop.
HOw to make all icon display on the screen ?
I can only see 4 icons at a time , how can i make it displayed all ? Thanks
Did you read the first post? Just change icon size/spacing/caption size/spacing.
V
The problem I have is that the icons I use appear incorrectly. The odd pixel is missing and the number of missing pixels depends on the icon. They display fine in the Change Icon screen and in the Windows photo viewer, but not on the Today screen.
Edit: OK, it seems that these pixels are turning up as transparent. All of the ready-made cLaunch icons which have transparency have that pink colour. Maybe some of the colours in the icons are too close to that pink. Any way to turn transparency off?
What icons are they? Just edit them and remove transparency.
V
Does this program work for the IPAQ b/c I cannot only see the add, edit and delete buttons on the bottom.
Icon Display
Vijay555 ,
Thanks for that reply, i got it down and the only thing i am trying to do now is getting the bottom portion of the icons. I have phoneAlarm , what do i do? i played around and couldn't come up with any luck.
I also wholeheartedly recommend cLaunch if you haven't already tried it. Search for 'claunch' in my previous articles; I've published several on it (also comparative ones if you want to know how it compares to the alternatives like Spb Pocket Plus).
I've since found that white is a transparent colour. I made a completely white icon and it didn't show up at all on the Today screen. I'm exporting from Photoshop as Windows 24 bit BMP. Should I change that?
I can't see the "Settings" with my treo 700wx (240x240) screen. Is there any way for me to resize the program or work around it?
Why aren't you exporting icons with an icon app? Try Microangelo or similar.
schen08 - apologies, I don't think the config app has ever been compiled to be square screen compatible. Try using the app floatme perhaps to give control of the window and drag it around. I doubt that would work.
Anyone got time to recompile? It'd be quite easy.
Oh schen08 - you can probably do it yourself! Just load the app into a resource hacker and redefine the dialogs, if you can.
V
What exactly should I export as? ICO is unsupported by cLaunch.
Sorry, I'm turning blonde today!
Make icon in Microangelo Studio, get together a bunch of .icos, then download a resource only icon dll. That sounds like crazy talk, but download PHM Tools and you will find an icon dll in there.
Scoop out the filling like some kind of surrogate bovine egg cell, and using Microangelo Librarian drag your ico files into the now empty icon dll.
In this way, you make an "icon bank", which you can then use in claunch, and also has the convenience of keeping all your icons in one place.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271547#post980612&postcount=4 for more confusion.

Thanks. Also, how are you taking pictures of your screen?
This program looks great but I do have a problem. I've installed it but I can't get to the options screen where you have the about menu, and the other settings.
When I hold down the stylus in the Claunch i get the settings page. but from there I only can add/delete/edit. nothing else.
I have a treo 700w

There are various screen shot apps. Check XnView pocket - http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=1275 as it includes a function to take screen shots but is also a useful image editor. It is freeware as well.
Square screen
digitalsr2: you need to resource edit the dialogs for square screen, dialog 500.
I can't test this, I'm at work, but try this:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/claunchguide/square/claunch.dll
- Install normal claunch
- Go to Today settings screen and UNTICK claunch.
- Download above file, and copy into \windows\
- Go to Today settings screen and TICK claunch.
Now try the options.
Like I said, untested, but follow the idea and make a new version.

HOWTO: Change Soft Keys with Registry!

Well, after snooping around trying to find out how to change the kaiser's soft keys using registry only, I finally found the solution after peeking into PocketCM's registry!
Here's how to do it:
1. Using a registry editor (I prefer PHM RegEdit), navigate to the first left one, which is:
Code:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112
You'll notice two strings there: "Default" and "Open" (no quotes).
"Default" is the name of the left soft key, so if you wanted the left soft key to say Internet Explorer, just change the value of of the string to say "Internet Explorer". "Open" is the path of the file you want to open when you click on the left soft key, and it has to be an .exe file! So, if you wanted the left soft key to open Internet Explorer, you would change the value of "Default" to say Internet Explorer instead of Calendar, and you would change "Open" to \windows\iexplore.exe. That's it!
Now, for changing the right soft key. The interesting thing is, that it seems you can only change the path of Contacts to open a different application, although some programs allow you to change the name, so it must be possible to change the name. Anyway, to change the path of the right soft key, open your Registry editor, then go to
Code:
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:MSCONTACTS
now, edit the value of 1 to the path you want, and it must be an .exe!
That's it, let me know if I missed something!
Thank you so much!!!!!
It was the only way I could change the left soft key in the new V10 ROM by L26!
Not even SwopKeys was working.
The only thing missing is the name of the right softkey, can you tell me how to change it?
The other soft key is (on some devices)
Code:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113

lol, thanks, I was trying 111 and 114 for some reason, good to know!
In my latest custom rom for myself this is the registry setting I made in my kitchen....works great...
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113]
@="Contacts"
"Open"="\\windows\\iContact.exe"
This was placed in the rgu located in the OEM_Lang_409 folder.
Just some information...This rgu contains all the key settings so you can change them to what you would like while cooking
Any idea on how to change the left softkey while in phone mode from "Hide Keypad" to "Contacts"?
Perfect! I now have the Comm Manager available with one touch. Thank you!

any idea how to change for this situation?
I want to change left key to run Agenda One's month calenda. There is a link file "Agenda One-month.lnk" in the Agenda One's directary to show how it called. However I am not able to adapt to the registry. The content of the "Agenda One-month.lnk" is #"\Storage Card\Program Files\Agenda One\Agenda One.exe" goto month
so in registry how should it formated ine String value?
"\Storage Card\Program Files\Agenda One\Agenda One.exe goto month" doesn't work.
Anybody help?
I would like to know how to map the soft keys found on the HW keyboard- seperately from the outside soft buttons.

How do you launch the "Programs" application folder using a soft key?

I've recently applied the reg edit to be able to view 5 items per row on my programs folder which now makes that page quite usable as a launcher. Now I'd like to assign my left soft key to open up the programs folder.
I'm using Soft Key v1.3. When selecting applications for the key, what is the name of the Programs Application that, when pressed, will open up the programs folder (ie, same as Start/Programs)? I've tried many that appear to be it but none work.
I've searched and searched on xda and actually found a few results but none that worked. I've tried creating shortcuts, even found a 'folderview.exe' file to put into the windows folder but, when pressed it opens up the default programs folder of only 3 icons per row. It seems like this would be an easy thing to do but I'm stumped.
If this made any sense of what I'm trying to accomplish, can anyone help please?
Any news on this?
I've been searching for hours about this subject and didn't find anything.
I'm stuck with this also, folderview.exe does open the programs menu folder but doesn't render the 4 icons per row, instead it presents only the standard 3 icons/row.
Anyone knows how to overcome this issue?
Thanks
BUMP!
Does anyone have a solution to displaying the 4 icon layout in folderview?
Or is there an alternative way to display folders in the program launcher?
Cheers!
@ question 1:
Start Menu\Programs on Soft Key
I actually found an application that is even more flexible:
WM5NewMenu by Saman.cz
It does NOT mirror the above mentioned folder,
but even better: you can configure it just as you like.
E.g.: I created a few submenues (Main, System, Connectivity, Navigation, Utilities, Games) and added the most important prog links to each submenu.
Give it a try and spend some time.
Hey, it's freeware.
@ question 2:
4 Icons in a row
best use Schap's Advanced Config (I used 3.0 as 3.2 did not work).
Then under the 1. menu item "user interface"
select "horizontal icon spacing" and change value to "112"
select "vertical icon spacing" and change value to "115"
select "icon title font size" and change to "6"
... perform a soft reset and ... you're done
Thanks M_O_N_A_C_O, but that's not what we are after.
We know how to set the folder with 4 columns and we don't want a new menu.
What we would like to have is some way to open the "programs" or "settings" from a button or softkey (like WMguy post) and still be able to get it with the 4 columns display instead of only 3, which is what happens if you do it with folderview.exe

Change Softkey Usage

I would like to use my right hand softkey to run a specific application - namely PI Agenda.
I know I can use DiamonTweak to change the softkey but it only gives me certain options. Is there any way I can define the softkey to open a certain app or is there a way to add to the list of apps that DiamonTweak offers for the softkeys? Perhaps putting a shortcut to the app somewhere or by adding a registry entry?
Thanks
There's a registry entry that changes the actual softkey use, I can't think what it is offhand.
You could use Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool or Fantastic Bytes SoftKey Manager - they both do this setting better than DiamondTweak.

You can do that in the registry
[Mobile Device\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\HomeLSKPath] for Left key
[Mobile Device\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\HomeRSKPath] for Right key
Here you have to put the whole string to you application, I made one for TomTom:
(\Intern geheugen\Programmabestanden\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe)
Excellent, thanks!
you need to change the text too: http://www.fuzemobility.com/?p=1611

Problem selecting text

I noticed a strange problem.
Inside text editing application that do not warp lines (Orneta Notepad Mobile and any other notepad style application I tried) text selection (with stylus tap and drag) only works when lines a short and orizontal scroll bar is missing or disabled. When lines are longer and orizontal scroll bar appears text selection is no more possible.
Does anyother noticed this problem?
Any solution?
Selecting text works not so fine anymore.
When I hold the syles on the screen sometimes it works, but not oke.
Or when I hit with the styles on a word he selected that word.
With me other WM phones (HTC to) it was possible selecting, copy, paste in most places. It was very simple te select a pease of tekst.
Does HTC running a app that has a conflict with the WM selecting option?
I have searching registry if there is maybe a key to change.
I don't like the slecting way on the Diamond2.
I hope someone find out what the problem can be.

True.
KraFT
I found a partial solution: there is a way to make a list of applications that should be ignored by TouchFlo. Inside these applications scroll by tap and drag stop working but text selection does work.
Find the registry key HKLM\Software\OEM\TFLOSettings\TFLOIgnoreAPPs
For any application that you want TouchFlo ignore create a string value and assign to it the name of the application .exe file (important: the value seems to be case sensitive)
For example in my case for Orneta Notepad Mobile
HKLM\Software\OEM\TFLOSettings\TFLOIgnoreAPPs\IgnoreAppNP = "NOTEPAD.exe"
Thanks, it works.
I have now add strings with poutlook.exe, PIMConnectivity.exe, Notepad.exe and Explorer.exe (resco) .
In those apps it works now fine.
