I am sorry if this sounds noob but I recently upgraded my phone to tilt from 8525
I see that it has an internal GPS, does that mean I can use a third party software to use the GPS without using data connection(like predownload the map on to the SD card)?
thanks in advance.
Yes you can. Go under the wiki and find the TomTom taster version software and try it out for yourself. You get a free small map and it works rather well. I believe you do have to have your phone turned on however because it uses the towers signals as well if I am not mistaken.
But you definitely do not need any Data Connection. Just use Wifi or something to update your QuickGPS and you'll be ready to go!
Hope this helped

thanks for the information.
I see that if I want the maps I would have to purchase them.
Does google offer similar options at free of cost?
Sir Noob, please search before posting. Your questions have both been answered many times. You don't start a new thread (that means ask a question in a new post) until you have searched for the answer first.
And yes, Google Maps or Live Search Maps are both free services and they work pretty well, depending on your needs.
Welcome to the forum.

does google map need data connection to download the map or is there a place i can download the map packages?
sorry for triple posting, my browser is acting up again
Wow, I thought you spazzed out or something.
I really wish you would do the Search thing. This has been covered.
On the phone navigate to Google.com then select "More" at the top. It takes you to another page. Select Maps which takes you to the page to install the Maps. Once installed go to Start- Programs- Google Maps and you have it.

On my Italian Kaiser I'm usin Igo2008 right now cause my TomTom lots of time doesn't syncronize street at real time (and few time I was wrong way LOL)...
In my sig ...
AdriaRoute is by far the best solution for Slovenia. It is quite precise when we come to streets and house numbers, customised POIs are nice add-on too. There are some drawbacks, but nothing serious.
Was using TomTom too, but its coverage is poor for our area, although there are some small areas with better coverage and details than AdriaRoute
I also like the response time finding an alternative way, way better than Garmin XT. New version solved this problem a bit, but still.
Both programs can read and speak Slovenian.
Depends on the country
I think this depends very much on where your using the device, i belive in the states theres some software called route 66 which is pretty good.. although ive never tried it.
In the uk i would recomend tomtom, this does have maps for most of europe as well, but like someone else stated the maps can be poor in some areas.
and if you don't want to srearch much and you want something free google maps mobile is you answer!!!
For voice routing/etc I use TomTom Navigator 6. It's great for where I am. I'm located in the US and I've used it in several states. Prompts, re-routing, directions, etc are all pretty accurate. I've used a few others but could never get used to it.
I also use Google Maps for quick location search, which works well on the device.
I use google maps, cause it seems like its the only one that
1. Is Free
2. Has maps for new zealand
Which one's are free?
I use both TomTom and Google.
For long trips I use TomTom, but local I use Google. I do like google better just because its easy to use and find food, and gas and stores around where ever I am, and also will import the info into my contacts as well if I need.
Am I right in assuming that Google Maps only does turn-by-turn which you must manually progress through your route?
I tried it out and this is what it seems to do...which is a nice program, but not exactly GPS software.
Am I missing how to use a feature of it or am I right in assuming it is basically like using the google maps webpage to get directions?
Oh I think I did know you can use the GPS to locate yourself to plan the initial route...but it doesn't track as you go, does it?
i'am in chile, and i use gps proxy with garminque and works perfect...
Yes Google and Microsoft Live both will route and track you on a moving map, but they don't have "heading up" and don't talk. But they are good free apps to keep on the phone for locating POI's etc.
In the US I prefer iGuidance v4 hands down because of talking street names, something few PDA versions have at the moment.
iGuidance ****
I have had good luck with iGuidance! link in my sig....
Heres an interesting test.
I just installed TomTom Nav6 on my TyTN II but the map seems a little outdated and I have no way of updating the map. If anyone knows how to for "free" id like some advice.
BUT...
I also have a new TomTom One that has the newest maps of North America.
So heres the question....
Has anyone tried to copy their North America map from an original TomTom One device and transfer it to their TomTom Navigator version on their PDA?
Is this even posible? Do the two devices use the same file format?
If so, this would be amazing, I could update all my maps with my TomTom One, and just transfer the files over to the TyTN II.
Wadaya think guys?
Careful, asking for "Free" maps is requesting WAREZ and can lead to a ban so consider this a warning.
As for your second question, it really depends on which version of TomTom you are running on your phone. Backup your current maps and give it a try.
im not sure he's asking for free maps he's just wondering if he can use the maps off is stand alone tomtom GPS unit for the Navigatror on his PPC and it dosent work I tried it a long time ago. Best option is to buy new maps.

Damn that sucks, oh well. I guess it woulda been worth a shot.
What exactly happens when you try to run it with the different file. Maybe someone can alter the file so Navigator will recognize it.
OR. Navigator might need more files than just the one Map file. Im not sure if anyone has any programing experience with TomTom, but theres always a way around everything
And agin I will remind you that asking to work around TomTOm's map security is asking about WAREZ.
2nd Warez warning in one thread.

im not asking for WAREZ...i OWN a TomTom one, I OWN at TyTN II. I OWN the software on the TomTom. I OWN the software on the TyTN II.
All i wanted to do was transfer one map to the other device if it was posible. What does this have to do with "downloading" cracks, hacks, torrents, keygens etc.
Last I heard trasfering files from two deviced that you own, along with the software on them, was legal. If im wrong for wanting to do that, I apoligize and wont mention "Warez" again. Sorry.
I think your best bet is contacting tomtom, and telling them about your owned software and whether they can cut you a deal
Tell them how you're a valued customer, how you might migrate to copilot or garmin, etc.

The reason why it is considered WAREZ, is because of the fact that if you do own the maps, you own ONE copy of it, if you wanted another, you would have to purchase it for another device.
been done
i'm not saying the transfering of maps has been done, i'm saying that this has been talked about atleast twice that I have seen. what we decided elseware was that it would be infringement on some copywrites and that it would not be done or talked about on here. I would say that since kyphur has given you two warnings you take our word for it. been tried, failed and even if it is done we will not let you know how to do it because that would be making us an accessory. google probably won't help you either sorry man.
You can run any tomtom map on your pda, but you will need a key to register the map.
And that software is illegal, but it is out there.

Not strictly true ..
Tomtom on the PDA is circa 6.032, and will run maps up to circa 6.75.
Tomtom One, Go, 3/5/7/9xx etc. can have their firmware / OS updated via Tomtom Home to version 7, this is not available to PDA devices - Only stand alone Sat nav devices.
The latest maps will only run on version 7 OS, and since you cannot update Tomtom PDA version 6, the maps will not work.
This is regardless of warez etc.
FYI - some files have different filetypes !!
If you read (on dubious websites) offers to install the latest maps on Tomtom, they refer to version 7 on version 7 stand alones and not PDA's
If you want the latest maps, get a Tomtom One (or Go etc.)
This post does not condone software theft !

Yeesh, relax, he's not trying to do anything illegal teacher. I suppose next we'll hear a lecture on how it's evil to make recordings for your PERSONAL use of music you already OWN and have PAID for, ya know, most of the time this forum can be so helpful, but at times like this, so annoying.
If he own a TT license he can use the upd. tools from the very comp he made this tread. Might be my bad english but I read that hes asking for a workaround on license not to get the ap. working. This board is never annoying, and if so (...) dont see any gun to youre head

How quickly a post becomes outdated.
It looks like they've packed TT7 with the HTC Diamond and it's working on the Kaiser.
HERE
I had found this pretty cool GPS tool (www.terracrosser.com), yet it's zooming does not work on HTC Diamond. I had tried to modify registry fot scrolling wheel, but I was only able to scroll the map up and down, not to zoom.
Any help would be great.
Here is the way to registry:
HKLM/Software/HTC/SmartTouch/Terracrosser/
classname (string): #NETCF_AGL_BASE_
Mode (dword): 4
WheelCount (dword): 2
The website contains little to no information.
What does this app do?
How does it differ to Google maps?
Can it grab a map of Paris for me for me to use offline in the future?
I don't understand, it uses gps to show your location with maps from google maps.... So basically it's just google maps?

Looks like it, read the .PDF on download page
So it appears. Try using Google Maps for the Diamond instead of Terracrosser.
Damn, what a nice tool, I will certanly keep that in mind!
I have searched for a proper solution to download the google maps for a long time... that saves me a lot gprs costs
Nice tool, hoe they gonna fix the zoom-bug, then it'll be just perfect!
Not really usable for the moment but, if I understand well the documentation, the tool Mapper (wich crashes for me) should be able to save maps with different zoom levels and that would be great ! Touch screen and jog dial navgation would also be great...
I'll keep an eye on this...
so how easy would it be to download maps for offline viewing.
Can I tell it to just 'go fetch maps for Paris' and that will be enough? Thats the sort of solution I would need, a list of cities and I 'check off' which ones I would want it to download and cache

I have tested the mapper for some minutes, i am at work, so not much time to do it in detail
You have to zoom to the area you want to download by yourself, after that you choose how many zoomleves are to be saved and the rest dows the program on its own. Quite simple in my opinion.
But a feature to enter the city you want to download would be great, too
Perhabs it'll be added in the near future. It#s the first official version of this tool, as I have read on the page.
sorry but how can I control the program. I`ve added the necessary reg keys to navigate with hw keys but I can not zoom. stylus navigation isn`t supported?
Beta tester wanted
Hello!
If anybody want to betatest Terracrosser for HTC Diamond, please contact "mail at terracrosser dot com".
Thank you,
Nitisara
New Zooming method
Please use version 1.0.1 - touch screen zooming implemented (read User manual).
Great program, just what a lot of people have been after.
Why has it taken so long for someone to actually make an offline/cached map viewer??!?! I wouldn't have thought it would be that difficult!
I'm having a few problems with the software that I will try and solve, hopefully this keeps getting better!
what happened to Terracrosser.com??
I get a "server stoped" message when I go to the url where terracrosser was previously found
http://www.terracrosser.com
Site Not Working
Same problem for me also. Nitisara please make the site work so we can download the latest version of terracrosser.
Loved it in Cuba.
It's a pitty that the site is down.
Luckily I already grabbed a version. And I used it in Cuba
As far as I know there are no GPS-maps available because that is not allowed.
But Terracrosser was a big help, especially when a jinetero is helping you to go to somewhere else
How do you install TomTom 6 on a HTC Diamond? I got it working on an old HTC device without problems but on the Diamond it says 'no maps found'.
If this question has already been answered please point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
Your copy of TomTom 6 is a legit full copy including over a gig's worth of data, right? not just some cab you found floating around here?
Anyway you may need to install it on your device off your chip (the install is triggered by an autorun file) where you also have map and other data stored. I've had no problems with this over many roms on my last two phones however be advised that some roms, romeos for example, fire up the autorun if the chip's in on the first boot whereas on others, rre for example, it may not appear to do anything but possibly install in the background.
So what's the specific problem? Gets to the install but cannot find maps? Bottom line though you need the full copy from the TomTom people to have any shot yourself and you need that full copy to be legit (versus cracked) if you want anyone on xda to attempt to help you. Not suggesting it ain't but just advising you.
One thing potentially helpful that I will go ahead and throw your way now is suggesting you throw in the towel on tomtom for now and check out amazegps which I hear is free, turn by turn, voice -- basically tomtom except no huge install, rather it downloads data as you drive which is okay if you've got a car charger and are driving where there's cell coverage ideally in the country native to your carrier. I don't quite now yet why it's free, perhaps they've got some datamining or advertising dreams they sold on some venture capitalists and got lucky. Haven't tried it myself but if you do I'd appreciate it if you'd report back your findings on my website.
http://www.amazegps.com/index.php?page=register (oh yeah you have to register to get your secret code but not too much private info)
Good luck with all that...

I appreciate your input/advice but please spare me the self righteous cr*p. It's over a gigs worth of data but it is a copy. It worked perfectly on my HTC Touch.
The actual problem? Installs OK, the app launches but it doesn't function because the 'no maps found' error is displayed.
Thanks Deech, I will give that a go.
Hey guys, I've had my Diamond for a month or so now, and I've been playing with it quite a bit, but I had a question.
I can't seem to change the default HTC WM theme- the one with the icon set and start menu icon. I want it to be the default black one: geeky-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/windows-mobile-6-5.jpg
Once, I had it so, but I changed the ROM and I can't remember what I did to disable to htc theme. Google isn't helping, neither is forum search. Perhaps it's so obvious no one bothered to explicitly state it!
Help would be excellent Thanks!
edit: I figured, since I already have this thread open I might as well ask something else I've been wondering- tho entirely unrelated to this topic. I've got data blocked from my phone from the carrier side- I'm using wifi, and I have downloaded the google map program. Were I to try to use the GPS feature, would it cost money? Actually, I don't even understand how it works, but it did get my location pretty much spot on. Seems like friggan magic to me.
That just looks like Windows Mobile 6.5. Try to find a WM6.5 ROM?
~codeslicer
Using GPS doesn't cost any money, only data usage to get Maps cost. but if you are using WiFi for data then no probs. Btw google maps automatically detecs gps and will give you exact location.
