Hey all,
I see lots of people making roms for the wizard, but my search for tools to start doing this on my own has come very short. Can anyone suggest how I can get started making my own roms? I have done quite a few exhaustive searches on here, google, and buzzdev with little to no success.. all I've really found are old posts, dead links, and unanswered forum posts.
Please at least point me in the right direction, I have a lot outdated knowledge from when I used to test ppc2k3 devices for Symbol Technologies, and I would like to try the other end of what I was working with... I look forward to your responses and hope someone out there is willing to assist
Thanks!

Awsome, Just after I posted this thread I found that post, I am glad that you were able to confirm that it was a valid one.
Now, as far as testing your roms, do you typically put your devices in harms way, or do you have some kind of emulator that you use to test?
Is there some kind of comprehensive "How to" somewhere on MSDN or some other forum, or did everyone here just blindly poke around till they figured stuff out? (Which I am in favor of doing if necessary)
I just want to make sure that I can get myself as educated as possible without turning my device into a 6.2 ounce paperweight. I love the kinds of contributions people make here and I would love to be able to make my own contributions one day
Thanks (Sorry if im being pesty I am just so interested in getting started)
Don't worry about bricking the phone... as long as you don't flash ipl/spl you can always put the phone back into bootloader mode and reflash a rom that works...
ok so I downloaded a billion tools... but where do I get a base rom to start with? I decided a best bet would be to download the HTC shipped rom off their site, but that uses an NBF file, and all of these tools reference an NBA file, as a matter of fact every "rom" file I have found has an NBF file in it... how does that happen?
I kinda feel stupid and im losing faith in starting this
im have trouble?
I'm having a litte trouble with the posts can sombody help me out?
ok - I am not given to fits of anger or anything but this has really gotten me to a boil:
THE SEARCHING FUNCTIONALITY IN THESE FORUMS IS PATHETIC!
phew - sorry but I really needed to get that off my chest...
it seems more the norm than the exception that forums have ridiculously inadequate search functions but this one takes the cake!
I understand all the "search the forums" "read this thread:" etc comments from the veterans that see the same question asked time and again but hey - YOU try searching for something in a million posts with a search that brings up either EVERY post under the sun or NONE!
it's like trying to read through all of these just to find one thing!
I know there's nothing that anyone will do about this, but I just HAD TO VENT!

an easier way to do that is....
in google just type what you want to search for and add site:forum.xda-developers.com
ie: 'voip sip settings site:forum.xda-developers.com'
that works for me because i like to minimize clicking
p.s. the blame should be put on vbulletin
search works just fine when i use it
I used the Search ones to find my car keys... and it couldn't find them .. The search SUCKS!

Don't you know searching for LOL will turn up 9,945,325,440 search results here?

LOL, but seriously this is sort of a nuisance. Trying to search os.nb to find all info about this format and nothing comes up. Thanks @ TaurusBullba for that method of search. Give google a few years and they'll even be able to find that chic you hooked up with during Spring Break 7 years ago
how do i search a specific phrase? quotation marks seems to have no effect here on this forum's search!! like:
"gprs stays on"
i would get results with GPRS, or some posts where says STAYS or even ON !!! i can't get it to return specific searches returning only posts where it returns results with the entire quote (yes i know there is google, but i'm sure that option is here on the forum's search or is it?)

lol you obviously didnt read carefully what i said, i know about Taurusbulba's post on page one, i'm saying was there anyway to do it without using google to search within forum.xda-developers.com and only using the forum's original search engine to do exact phrase searches.

There is a limitation within the forum's native site search. It is what it is. However, the admin is aware of the MANY requests from users and moderators alike regarding the, often times, poor search results.
If the forum's search code is changed to make the search results more relevant, it will definitely be conveyed to everyone on the front page, I'm sure.
In the meantime, the best way to get what you're looking for is to use Google search. You may want to bookmark this to make getting to it a bit quicker.
Mike has also been generous enough to sticky Google's search links in many forums here already too.

HELP YOURSELF! THIS IS NOT A BABY SITTING WEBSITE!
the thing is i have been searching for answers but i havnt found anything concrete and it has been in different threads for different things so i was hoping to get a concrete answer....mans ur just wasting more time on just complaining then just helping.
Have you ever stopped to think about why it's so hard to find an answer???? Because you have to sort though 1,000,000's of useless threads (like this one).
I did a search BEFORE I posted the first reply. Low and behold!!!!! THE ANSWER WAS THERE!
If you have a question, you can bet it has already been asked, many times! Just because it is YOUR first day here, dosent mean it is the first day for these forums to be here and other members to be here!
Sure, I could have just linked to it, but then what is this BB? A bunch of threads that map to other threads that map to other threads?
GET REAL! Nobody here is your personal assistant!

lol grizzley...he DOES have a personal assistant
the "search" button
I fully understand how new people asking questions about something they need help with would be annoying?!? (sarcasm) But I have searched for certain items on this site a few times and may have found the item I was looking for, but have not known it. Not everyone on this site has time to sit 24 hours and learn every term and name of the things we are searching. Granted the video aspect of the Kaiser has been brought up in multiple threads and a search was warranted.......but being a jerk is not helping the cause either. I wasted more time reading your assanine comments than figuring out what the answer may have been.
I am on my 6th HTC branded PPC and still I consider myself a nOOb at all of this .......funny thing is , is that , I do not ask any questions about things on this site.....even if I have searched.......because of the flaming it causes by the know it alls!
Go ahead and flame me for only haveing 20 posts ...if that.....but I do not post because of jackholes acting all high and mighty like you all keep doing in almost every thread on this site!
My vent so take it how you want!
it just seems like that the only thing these jerks do is just sit around all day on the forums and just look at them and thats it....sorry some people have lives that cant just sit here and know everything that is on this forum...and yes i did searches like i have said....i have the video **** done....like i said for youtube but i was wondering about flash sites and break.com wouldve been simple to just read it and answer it and not be a [email protected]@! get over yourselves and get lives.
also called netcm.v2 i need to find this file and delete it so i can re download it. i also need the quickgps.cab
Search?
I responded to your previous thread...the netcm framework is in your /windows dir. gps.cab you can find after 20mins of searching. No one is responding to your threads because you have not obviously searched. You want someone to spend there time uploading files for you and hand feeding you. What will you learn by that? You will not get all the do's and don'ts of a particular cab if someone just uploads or copies a searched link for you. My point is, SEARCH 1st ask after.

Amen to that my brother!
Search and your answers will reveal themselves
I am willing to bet that 99% of all recently asked questions in new threads are actually on the 1st page of our wonderful WIKI
ill admit i have not searched, and the reason is this, the only acess i have to the internet is my wonderful tilt, and i dont know if u have tried using the search function with opera but it is more than troublesome being that everytime u click search for the drop down box and begin typing it goes away.
i do appreciate you informing me as to where i can find the file i am looking for, and i also understand the flaming for not searching however not eveyone has access to the internet on a home pc as you do and please have a little compasion and sympathy for the less fortunate before jumping down their throats
Hi all,
for starters, I know where the search-button is and I know how to read, I've read the stickies and most of the links, so no obvious remarks please
I'm having a hard time finding good threads to read about creating/editing/cooking roms, understanding what XIP/SYS files are, knowing how to strip/add programs,...
I've used keywords like: rom cooking, xip, how to, port, tut(orial), etc...
It only gives a gazillion answers and most of the time useless threads...
Once in a while it's worth reading, but most of the time it's junk or way to specific/difficult...
So the question is, could anyone link some usefull good threads/discussions/how-to's that they've read?
Maybe you could give it a rating yourself going from beginner/intermediate/pro...
Maybe such a condensed topic is already on the forums, then please do show me, since I didn't found it yet...
If you're first thought is "god, not again", then please, don't respond at all
Thanks for your time!

Jack,it's not because of my low post count, that I'm just around here...
I've seen and read that post several times, I've dumped my own rom and downloaded others, I extracted them and started fiddling around, but that's all what I did, fiddling, since I don't really know what I'm doing...
For instance, I'm reading and seeing XIP everywhere, but I don't even understand what it stands for, I can't find (or don't use the right keywords) to find any decent info on it...
I found this great post of Ameet about porting XIP, but that's already about hardcore coding without the basic info I hoped to find... I'm just a beginner, that'll be stuff to read when I'm several months further...
It all starts with the saying, "give a man a fish and he can eat for a whole day. Learn him how to fish and he can eat a life-time.."
The post you refered to is great to learn how the kitchen works, great for learning how to use tools, but the action eventually only shows how to remove standard OEM stuff out of a rom. Nothing more...
Understanding the ins and outs of a rom, how it's build and why, how it's linked and what it does... That's where I think it starts, but that's what I can't find... If no-one ever wrote anything about it, then I will, but then I'll have to try and find bits of pieces of info everywhere... And that's why I posted the question. So people could at least point to some information they know where to find...
I've even seen and tried your work... It's great, but it's a full working, locked rom (at least, it doesn't break down using htainlin's info to the same files and folders as a stockrom does, or I'm using the wrong tools)... I can't see what you've done to make it that way... I can't open it to compare with something stock to see what has changed and conclude what your changes really do... I don't mind reverse engineering, I do have a brain I can use to figure things out..
Well, sorry for the rant, and if I somehow offended you, I didn't intend to, I just hope you now understand what I'm trying to accomplish
Thanks for all who even tried to read this
@Lokatho
Thanks! I've only read the index, but I already know I'll be busy reading that for a couple of hours...

Well, I never judge xda member on their post count since I know some experts in this field maybe new to XDA-developers and some people w/ very high post count are keep on posting **** (e.g. someone in X1 general inventing 4D glasses and UI. )
Most kitchen (at least the one I pointed to) is just a Dos batch script to automated all the tedious command and parameters w/ all the needed tools. You can learn a lot of in and out if just you open it w/ a editor, follow the steps manually and research those tools individually.
If you really want to learning cooking in the hard way, I had a writeup long time back for Asus P525 which most of the steps still apply to any HTC rom nowaday.
All the documents for how to fish is here and we are still seeing people creating new threads for questions that been address millions time. This is a developers forum afterall and no one is responsible to feed you while your hands are free.
Regarding my rom, I never intend to lock it. Both V1 and V2 are extractable but rgu are removed due to space and speed considerateion. Afterall, the main purpose of a rom is for daily "use" instead of "teaching material". Why am I bother to slow my rom down just because I have to let others to extract it?

This part was for the locking section you refer to
I already figured out a number of reasons why it would be "locked", and space-limiting was one of them... I definately understand your reasons and by no means am I complaining about it... It's just a pity I can't use such good material as a reference to study...
As for examining the tools, I was already wondering what they're all doing and what they're needed for... However I'm a bit cautious since I don't know how they work... This'll be a matter of trial-and-error...
I will definately have a look at what you've written, not that I'm keen on really wanting to learn it the hard way, but it might make it easier to understand the working of some of the tools...
About the fishing, you are right, no-one is obligated to give me anything. I was merely asking if some-one might remember a post they once read and found very usefull in understanding or learning the process of cooking...
As I already stated, I used the search-button and already found bits of information that I thought were a little usefull, but I'm having a hard time finding any good posts... The topic Lokatho refered to was a great link and gave me some good information and I've got some nice material to work and practice with... It would've taken me ages to find me or just dumb luck...
I'm keeping together all the links I used to read and learn and might paste them in a write-up once I think I've learned a fair bit
To finalise this reply, I understand your frustration, there will always be people who ask the most simple things on any forum, may it be ppc, car, house or anything related... Questions in here like, how do I have to flash your rom, what is hard-spl, why can't you make a 'insert langueage'-rom, reporting a "bug" that's been declared not a bug for several pages already... Those are the most annoying questions I've seen until now(just to name a few) and are really an indication those are posted by lazy people...
Cheers
