can't access gmail from over the air via AT&T

hey guys, i searched, but didn't see anything (maybe i missed it?)...
my data connection with AT&T works fine, except for when i try to use my gmail account in mobile outlook. it gives me a connection error, but will work fine when using the internet.
this problem does not exist over wifi though.
in case it matters, i bought the tilt and flashed to the HTC ROM.
Maybe your Gmail settings are not correct? Mine works just fine.
I thought that could be it so I went over them, but they're exactly as they should be. Besides, if they were wrong, it shouldn't work via wifi then, right?
Check the Advanced Server settings for GMail in the messaging app options. It's grabbing the wrong modem connection ("The Internet" on mine instead of "Media Net"). Change the network in the pull-down and I'll bet it starts working.

Gmail issues on the Kaiser - hitting a dead end

I spent a good bit of the day today researching this issue, but i have run into a brick wall - please help me out if you have any ideas.
The issue is that i can't access my gmail account via messaging on my at&t tilt except via a WIFI connection. If my phone is hitting my local wireless router i can send/receive fine, if my phone is hitting 3G, Edge, or HSDPA i receive 'Error Synchronizing" - "Cannot connect with current connection settings".
So, i read as much as i could on this issue and found a few common suggestions - all of which i have tried with no avail.
1) When i click settings -> advanced -> select networks - both are now set to MEdia Net ("programs that.. connect to the internet" and "programs that.. connect to a private network")
2) I have unchecked "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" in my MEdia Net proxy settings
3) I have tried removeHiddenProxy4CWS_0522.cab and checked the registry setting as listed here to ensure that EnableAutoDetect is set to 1
4) I have set "network connection" under advanced in my gmail settings to both "The Internet" and "MEdia Net" with the same results
5) I do have pop3 enabled on my gmail account (it works fine on the phone when connecting via WIFI)
6) I have tried both via pop3 and imap settings for my gmail account setup
7) The connection being used is set to wap.cingular (not isp.cingular)
Please keep in mind that this gmail account works perfectly fine in messaging so long as i am connected to a local wireless router, it is only when going through AT&T's network that it does not work.
Is there any chance that AT&T has changed how they are forcing the use of their proxy? Am i wrong to assume i should be able to download my gmail through their network?
(p.s. thanks for any insight or help you might provide, i have managed to get my tilt flashed with dutty's latest release as well as my radio flashed, but i am having no luck with this issue)
note: during these issues with gmail, my live.com email was working successfully - you can always setup forwarding on your gmail account for a temporary solution
In your isp settings does it say "isp.cingular" or "wap.cingular". I had the same problem until i changed it to "wap.cingular". When it fails to connect it pops up a bubble window with a warning that it failed. Click settings, isp settings, next until you get to the setting that says isp.cingular. This is all granting that you're in the USA.
Problem confirmed for me as well. Cannot connect to gmail via the messaging app unless connected to wifi. I'm using MediaNet connection using wap.cingular when not connected to wifi.

yes, mine is set to wap.cingular.. i switched everything to use the MEdia Net connection (not the My ISP one) - which was already set to wap.cingular.. thanks for the suggestion though, i left it out of my list - if anything this can be a consolidated spot for common causes.
FYI, it actually started working on its own since my initial post (after not having worked all day).. the only things i have done tonight are the following:
1) did a send/receive via a WIFI connection on the gmail account
2) setup outlook 2007 on my PC and synched my contacts/notes/email
3) upgraded my radio from default .11 to .17 (perhaps .11 radio restricts proxy settings?) (*soft reset - may have played a role?)
i wish i had tested it between each of these steps, but i wasn't really doing these things to try and fix the gmail issue.. hopefully it will stay working
Here's a silly question - had you tried simply soft-resetting the phone? I had the same problem for a bit, was absolutely driving me nuts, and all it took was a soft reset to get it to connect and work fine ever since. Maybe for future reference...

not a silly question.. i had tried resetting somewhere amongst my attempts during the day with no avail, but obviously i reset during flashing the radio rom, so who knows, maybe that did play a factor.
all i know is it is still working today from work, so that is a big plus.

try everything in the list, and try a soft reset as well.. if that doesn't do it you may want to try and update your radio rom to .17 since you are on .11 as i was..
I had the same problem and had to enable SSL for incoming and outgoing mail under the advanced settings in the Outgoing mail server setup page. Once I did that everything has worked perfect since then.
Hope it solves your problem aswell.
I've never had an issue with Gmail and wap.cingular...except HTML messages still not working.
The SSL thing is most likely it. If you read google's instructions for setting up the account it clearly states that ssl with authentication has to be enabled.
Gmail
For those having issues with Gmail, has anyone looked into Mobipush? This service allows you to use your device's Direct Push Technology to get your Gmail sent to your device in real-time. I had previously mentioned this in another thread. All you have to do is turn on POP or IMAP access in your Gmail settings and setup your device as per the instructions on Mobipush's site. I've been using the service and it seems to work great...and did I mention its free?
here's the link...

I use Java for my Gmail account its very nice and fast with 3G. I have never tried setting it up on an account inthe built in Messaging App. I use Pocket MSN for my primary Hotmail account. Just download the Gmail IMAP software from Google and try it out and see what you think.

i had the same problem with bellsouth as my email provider when using outlook email but i got it to work on xpressmail - i still dont know what was wrong...
Same problem, I think
Gmail app loads and maybe 1kb comes down but then after a short time it errors saying that it needs a data connection and to look at the FAQ. This only started happening after upgrading to ATT ROM AKU 0.4.4. Worked on my stock ATT TILT no problems.
mobiPush looks good. I use Seven's extended beta. http://community.seven.com/forum/main.php They now support Gmail IMAP. It works great, and I like how it fixes Gmail's imap problems. I'll have to check out mobiPush to compare the two.
Funny, I was able to get G-mail to work fine on my first Tilt and I got the new one (red light of death issue) and now my G-mail won't work...

I had same problem "Error Synchronizing" - "Cannot connect with current connection settings"." - Problem is activesync getting in a twist. Go into connection manager and turn off activesync, or connect to PC and then disconnect.

Tried setting up gmail in Messaging App
I tried to set up my gmail account too, just to see. I set up gmail pop3 at gmail settings. I went through messaging App and set up incoming with
pop.gmail.com:995 and outgoing smtp.gmail.com:465 Nothing seemed to work, says unable to connect with current settings. A few have already said that it worked fine under their messaging app. What settings are you using if you have it working? Please post your incoming and outgoing settings please.
Thanks, Kevin
I had this when I upgraded to Dutty's new rom, and I was panicking like mad. I tried everything - but nothing worked apart from wifi sync - so I went to bed. When I got up I tried to sync and worked right away...
So I dunno if you've been hard at work at this non stop - best thing to do is seemingly to let it settle, same thing happened for me when I upgraded again to V3 Dutty's (which is awesome by the way) - gmail started working after a little while (this time I did nothing)

email issue?

so i set up my gmail account...and tried to get my emails...it tries to connect to MY ISP GPRS (for internet it usually connects to media net..i have the blackberry feature plan) and then it says cannoy connect for an unknown reason...." any ideas on why this might be happening? did i set up something wrong? everything else including internet works perfectly fine
I dont have blackberry plan but this is what I did. My Yahoo wouldn't work, so I searched a little bit using xda's google search and found.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1908753&postcount=2640
Again, I dont have BBC, but try that. If it doesn't work, search for some answers.
Hope it helps.

t-zones with tilt connecting problems since 1/15

hey guys, i was wondering if its just me, but i have a htc tilt, unlocked for tmobile and i have been using tzones just fine. however, yesturday after hardresetting the phone, i seem to have problems connecting. the settings were all correct and it has been the same that i have alwyas used. it gives me the page cannot be displayed because of errors message and on opera i get the access is restricted error. its weird becayse when i click on the E icon, it says i am connected. it is very on and off because from time to time i test it, and it works, but majority it gives me the error. is anyone else getting this whos using tzones with their tilt? thanks
the internet and all works fine for me still. just checked.
the only thing im on this board for now is i cant seem to fix my Gmail. It randomly stopped receiving emails and i cant get it back.
still working fine for me. you should check with Tmo cause sometimes they have to reset the connection from their end for you.
thanks guys
it seems really weird, everytime i delete my existing connection and remake it with the same settings, it works for one round, few minutes later it stops working, delete, remake and works again, and it loops like that. i cant figure out whats going on.
Are you using the wap.voicestream.com connection with the proxy settings or did you change the settings to epc.tmobile.com? You might want to try epc without the proxy settings. The only problem that I have had is that PIE does not load any pages. It does not affect me because I use Opera instead. Skyfire now works on the T-Zones plan without the proxy settings (a little slow, but works).

its weird, like i said, the settings works one time, then it stops working like few mintues after. opera doesnt work either. i will try the epc settings, but i just find it weird that it works everytime i create a connection, connect once, works, then it stops. have to keep deleting and recreating if i wanan visit any sites. such a pain.
I was just looking in the epc and noticed the PIE freeze and what not and the system just lags.
just tried the EPC settings, so far everything seems good. thanks a lot. i wont be charged anything extra other than for t-zones right? i wonder why wap.voicestream.com went down on me the way it did =/
so you didnt have to use proxy bknewtype?
no you won't be charged anything extra. i have tzones too and use epc.

i used the original proxy settings with the epc access point and it works. im going to try to take off the proxy settings and report back.
it seems to work without the proxy. however, im using PDAS ultimate corner v16 ROM, and i tap the internet launcher from the wiglet, it doesnt launch. but with the proxy it does. i have to manually navigate to the program to run it, but it works. wonder if the proxy has an effect on this?

Connection trouble with BB Connect on HTC FUZE

I installed BB Connect .106 onto my HTC FUZE and actually got it working, new PIN, IP address, everything seemed fine.
BUT. . .
I found that I could not connect to the internet or get emails, even though the connection settings clearly showed me as being connected to Media Net.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a workable solution? FWIW, I do acually have a Blackberry plan (BIS) in use with my Bold, but I would like to have the option to switch between the devices as I wish.a
What, no one??? No one at all???
I am using about the same config as you, but all is working fine here. Keep in mind:
1. You have to set up a correct connection (APN) for all internet traffic but BBC (which uses its own non-configurable APN)
2. When you click on an internet link in a Blackberry message, your browser tries to use the BBC set APN to get the page.
3. When you browse to an URL in IE or Opera your browser tries to use the (self set) internet conection APN.
Maybe this helps you solve your problem.
Thanks for the reply. When I have more time to experiment I'll check it out.
