Organizing apps and EDGE problem - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi,
I have two questions:
1. How can I organize my programs in the "Programs" window in the way I want them to be organized? I mean, which folder determines look of this window? I guess that it's somewhere in /windows/, but I have no idead where exactly. I don't have any /windows/start/programs/ folder or sth like that - any guess, how can I create some folders in the "Program" window and move the links to the programs there?
2. Sometimes, with no reason, connection to GPRS starts. Only NoData which I have turned on prevents me from paying far too much for the GPRS connection I don't want. Why is that so? I have e-mail checking set to "manually" and the option of auto-retrieving weather info unchecked. So why does the phone try to connect using EDGE almost every five minutes?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

1. \windows\start menu\programs\ Have a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428064

But, as I've written above, i don't have "start menu" folder in /windows/. Am I supposed to create it?

Settings>Menus -- where is it getting list of programs?

Can anyone tell a newbie where the Menu list is coming from under Settings>Menus (personal)?
I would like to add the 10 button com manager (back) to the launcher, but it does not show up in the list of available programs. Is this a matter of dropping a shortcut into a specific folder or a registry edit? I know the program is there as I can go into the Connections tab and it is listed as "Wireless Manager".
This is on a tilt running HTC Home 2.0 with the original rom.
Thanks greatly for any help.

Programs....
This is from a folder in your windows directory. You can put a shortcut there.
File Name and Folder
Do you know the name of the file that needs the shortcut created and what folders under windows it should be dropped into?
Thanks,
Bobby
Found it
FYI, if anyone else starts hunting this stuff.
The shortcut was already in the Windows folder. A copy of that shortcut needs to be dropped in the "Start Menu" > "Programs" folder. It will then be available in the Launcher application to add.
This should also work for any other application you would like to add to the Launcher.
Thanks,
Bobby

shortcuts

I would like to add my "favorites" to the today screen. I've added the kaiser tweaks and the HTC homepage plugin. No where does it allow me to put my favorites on a tab or on the menu. Does anyone have a way to do this? It would make jumping online for something so much quicker. Thanks
If you're using HTC Home, you can add shortcuts to the "launcher" tab.
Go start>settings>today then at the bottom tab shift to "HTC Home" and make sure "launcher" is checked to display.
Then from your Today screen, tap over to the "launcher" icon. You'll see two rows of little squares now (the top row is filled in). You can tap a black square and it will allow you to select which application launches from that sqaure. The little "x" allows you to unlock the squares to remove them.
If you want to add an application or shortcut not on the availabe list, sync to your PC and go into your device.....create a shortcut in the windows>start menu folder.
Hope that helps...if that's what you were looking for.
* this may of course all vary depending on which version of HTC Home you have loaded
Sounded brilliant but it didn't work. I'm working on XP and it wouldn't allow me to make a shortcut on the mobile phone (tilt). So I just copied my favorites folder into the program files folder, start menu folder, and anywhere else I thought it might show up. I got it onto the start screen, but there was nothing in it. Any other suggenstions?

It will work with XP, you may need to open two windows to do it.
From your PC (my computer) open a window for the device....surf down to Windows>Start menu.
Now go back to "my computer" again and open a second device window. Surf down to whatever directory you are looking for...then drop/drag the exe into the open start menu window.....select "create shortcut" and your done
I got it onto the start screen, but there was nothing in it. Any other suggenstions?

Not sure I follow. It may not appear until you restart the device.
You'll get it, though. Keep tinkering.

If I understand you correctly, I think what you want is to be able to open your Internet Explorer Favorites quickly and easily on your Kaiser. If that's the case, what you need to do is check the "Favorites" box in ActiveSync - that will port all your favorites to your mobile device - then when you open Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE), all your favorites are available from there.

application sorting? Help!

I've installed 50+ applications on my new HTC kaiser (which runs WM6.1 OS), its getting a little bit embarrassed because its very hard to pick a program up from the sea of icons.
Is there any way could possibly sort applications into different folders? (e.g. all gps applications go to a "gps" folder, all instant msg applications into a "IM" folder?)
btw, Is it possible to create a shortcut for the "green" application in the "programs" page(no installation needed, just run it in the file explorer) ?
thanks in advance!

You can add as many folders as you want. Just use a decent file explore & create as many new folders as you want in \windows\start menu\programs
Then cut & paste the shortcuts located in \windows\start menu\programs into the new folders...
I have many programs & my programs page has about 7 folders. You can even add custom folders & Icons by adding a resource file & a ?xxxxxx location direction command to the end of links....
For instance I have in my start menu a Phone & Messaging folder with all my phone & mressaging apps. Another for Multimedia.
got it!!!!!
Big thanks to *legendary* GSLEON3!
Legendary??? Well, ok, I guess in my own mind at least...
I'm nobody, Just a guy that can read & has been around long enough to know that you will learn more reading old Blue Angel & Hermes threads than you will anywhere else. Sure, most of the stuff won't work on Kaiser, but all of our tools & methods are adopted from there. The theory behind everything lies in those old threads.

Apps and Buttons

I've got a little executable task switcher called AltTab that works like its name. It just cycles through the open apps/windows.
However, it didn't come with an installer and I guess this is the reason why it doesn't appear in the list when I try to assign it a button from the control panel.
Where does the Buttons panel/applet get its program list from? The registry? Which entries will I need?
take a look at this thread. i guess there are more threads regarding task swtching. just do some search
That's the thread where I found the app. This thread is not about task switching.
The problem is that the button manager in settings doesn't show the program or have a browse function. So how do I add an app without an installer to the list?
Thanks anyway.
i believe for a program to apear in list of options for button assignment it needs to be
a) a installed program
b) have a shortcut pointing to the program placed in the windows/programs folder.
since option 1 is not viable give option 2 a shot. read about this a while ago so i can be wrong.

I had pondered both of those possibilities, but a) would have required I (learn how to) make an install package and I forgot to follow up on b), but it would completely explain way there are *.lnk files for virtually every program that already exists in the Windows folder (I mean why the redundancy if keeping the Windows folder as small as possible is one of the prime factors in speedier start-up and maintaining a speedy system?)
Note:
I just tried both a shortcut and the actual executable in the windows directory, and even after a soft reset, no results.
i just don't understand. do you have problem with this program only or with button mapping in general?
did you try this:
antihrist said:
extract exe file to your device, create shortcut in start menu and then assign it to some hardware key
Click to collapse
meaning:
i extracted exe file in "\Windows" folder. then i created shortcut to that file in "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs". after that i got the program in the list for button assignment.
OK, that worked.
Placing a shortcut in "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\" does make it appear in he list of programs when assigning functions to buttons.
Thank you for your response and assistance.

Problem with start menu programs link - please help

When I click Programs on my start menu, the device just returns to the TouchFlo home screen. The settings link works fine.
Any idea what has gone wrong and how to fix it?
Programs menu...
Has the 'Programs' shortcut menu ever worked?
If so, it sounds like the folder may have been deleted or moved. Use a file explorer application and browse to 'Windows\Start Menu' - does this folder contain a 'Programs' folder?

It used to work fine and yes, Windows\Start Menu container a Programs folder.
When I double-tap it to open it in Total Commander, it opens in Total Commander absolutely fine and all my shortcuts are in there as expected.
One thing I notice though it may mean nothing is that unlike my Games sub-folder it has no icon.lnk file. As I say, that could mean nothing!
It appears that Programs in the start menu is a kind of default thing in Windows mobile, is there a reg setting that may have got screwed?
Thanks for the help. Anything else to suggest?
Rename the troublesome Programs folder in start menu to something else like Programs2. Next make a new folder and cut and paste all the shortcuts in the Programs2 folder into the new folder. Finally delete the original Programs2 folder. So you have made a new Programs folder. Let me know if that works.

Thanks for the idea. I have tried that but get exactly the same result.
One discovery I made is that if I disable the enlarged start menu, the Programs link works fine!
Anyway, if there are no more ideas from anyone, I fear a hard reset could be in order.
Thanks
Ahh shucks! Sorry it didn't work. I suggested it because I had the sae problem. I made a new folder in Start Menu called Phone and it stopped opening after a while. I did the trick above and it works fine now.
See I have unchecked favourite apps from showing in start menu by unchecking them in the Menu option in Settings. Instead, I created folders in the Start Menu folder, such as Internet, Media, Travel, Office, Games, System, Audio etc and copied the relevant shortcuts from progam folder to the new folders. So when I hit start menu from my home page, I get a drop down list of folders only. Much better in my opinion.

Interesting way of organising your Start Menu.
However, I would probably forget in which folders I put the apps! I quite like the Programs list - it does exactly what I want - so thats why I will just stick with that. I was actually wondering if there was a way of making that Programs folder look better - for instance removing the scrollbars or something. Just a nicer looking program launcher really, but as I say, I like the way it works for me.
Anyway, thanks very much for the help. The programs link is a special link of some sort I reckon, hence your fix didnt work. I think I will upgrade my ROM and do a hard reset!
