The best navigational software for the HTC Diamond - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi all..
I want to start a threat on the best navigational software for the HTC Diamond.
This one is for the nominees the next threat will be with a poll of all nominees.
Post like me plz.
My nominees are:
1. Igo v8
2. TomTom v7
3. Sygic McGuider v7

And please post those without the 50m delay error !
Some say that the phone is not accurate and that indications and guidance are 50m late with Tom Tom and many others...

The delay is not caused by the software. It is the way they implemented GPS in the Diamond.

what's the legal status of loading TomTom 7 on a Diamond/branded handset that does not include this
I know of someone who tried to buy maps from Tomtom - and they accused him of piracy for loading the software - took his money and closed off his access to the maps he had bought online

Easy question : illegal !
TT7 is not sold by TomTom in any way except included in some devices...

That's pretty dumb to buy maps for a software acquired illegally.
To come back to the original question :
I can see only 2 real contenders : TT7 and Igo8. I found pros and cons on each one and cannot decide which one to use...
Other GPS software are far behind those two

The Tomtom software is free. The map cost.
I have both Tomtom and Igo on my TD. Igo win hands down.

Where did you see that ???????

TomTom 7 for VGA devices is sweeeeet on the Diamond. It´s lightning fast and everything looks super sharp. Installed it yesterday... great gps locks on my diamond, even indoors in seconds...

I also have both TT7 and Igo8, and I prefer Igo8. The lag on TT7 seems less though (maybe just due to the big arrow!). Igo8's UK map has directed me down a few one way streets but I really prefer the interface, it is much easier to use even as a piece of map reading software, and I find the instructions clearer, with fewer ambiguous instructions (like BEAR LEFT = TURN LEFT sometimes = go straight other times on TT7)

Wrong!! I have TomTom 7 installed, it didnt come packaged on my device, and i sourced it from TomTom.
Also you might want to read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401679 particularly the title "TomTom 7 extracted from HTC Diamond"
If this was EXTRACTED from a HTC Diamond, it was shipped from HTC with TomTom 7 Installed!
and if you look here: http://navngo.com/pages/global/eng/news_and_press/htc_touch_eng you can read about Nav N Go WM6 compatible software
I suggest you go to both of the manufacturers websites and re-read the sections about PDA's

I -really- prefer the interface, features and visuals of IGO8 over TomTom. The problem is IGO8 has around 20M lag so I end up using TomTom.

destinator
I tried several applications in the past.
"Destinator" is the only package that works for me without problems
both on my diamond as on my other devices.
Destinator also does not have problems with all my other applications that
run in the background.

is use both Igo8 and Tomtom7. Both work fine on the diamond, except for the GPS lag (the same with Igo8 and TT7). I recently switched back from Igo8 tot TT7 because i found the screen from Igo8 too overwhelming, looks like a computergame with lots of information and colours. TT7 has more basic looks, wich on the -little (compared tot dedicated devices)- screen from the Diamond looks better. Only complaint about TT7 are the small icons for the POI's, on the Igo8 these are better visible than the TT7 ones.

I have a delay, but no more than 10m and when you're driving it really doesn't matter.

i have tried various versions of both TTN7 and IGo8, ended up sticking with IGo8, mainly because of the interface. The only thing that anoys me is not being able to put in Postcodes in the UK
anyone know a answer?

You should have read ALL my post : it's illegal IF NOT PRE-INSTALLED ON YOUR PHONE...
Its loaded on SOME Diamonds not ALL. If not present it's illegal to install it as TomTom does not provide it...
Please provide OFFICIAL info and link on how to get LEGAL TT7 when not shipped with phone to prove I'm wrong (and I would be glad to be wrong !!!!).

given the person I spoke of above - thankfully not me - no the software isn't free, or at least TomTom don't think so

AFAIK iGo is illegal on the Diamond too since it's shipped only on SD cards that will hardly be accepted by our babies.
Anyway, running fine on my XDA Diamond.

I use the Diamond for IGO8, Memory map OS and Run.GPS....
Rom. Swiftblade 7, radio 05...
Almost instant gps fix, very accurate even whilst out for a run...
Mostly used is Run.gps, then Memory map followed by IGO8 when I have to go to a meeting...

Not really - if you bought yourself iGo on SD card and ported it over, you have purchased the rights to use that software
...unless some overly pedantic legalese prohibits shifting the files from SD card to Internal Storage

Tomtom on Kaiser?

Hello,
anyone who has Tomtom working on the Kaiser?
The application runs, but recognizes no maps, allthough the Western Europe Map is present...
Greetz,
Forrest
Netvigator
Yes, I have got Tomtom 6 running on Kaiser and using the latest 6.75 maps and it works perfect.
Great! Can you tell me how you did it?
Maybe I should rename the directory of the Western Europe map on my SD, but I don't know how it should be named...
Thanks!
It works! I renamed the map a few times, and suddenly it was recognized!
Thanks anyway!
How is the GPS in acquiring a GPS fix?
Is it quick?
Thanks,
HJ
If you check the box carefuly, you'll find disk with tomtom app. The version there is newer thet anything you can get elsewhere, but only works with kaiser...
Tomtom Navigator 6.032!!!

Where can I download Tomtom Navigator 6.032?
ALso does it work in the U.S.?
I'd love to get TomTom working on my Kaiser!

You can't download it. It is included on the CD. Aside from that, TT 6.032 does not work on other devices, it will simply refuse to install.
As far as the fix is concerned, as I already mentioned in another thread, it's really a lot quicker than on the Trinity (Qcomm) or x7500 (Sirf III) and also a lot more sensitive (7 bars on the dinner table compared to 0 for the x7500)
Got my kaiser yesterday, used the tomtom this morning on the way to work , the lock on time was about the same as my sirfiii external unit around 90ecs, was only get around 3-4 sats though so weaker than the external unit. I was not using quick gps fix either.
I will see how it goes as i can always use the external unit with it anyway. handy to have it all built in though.
device seems very responsive compared to my vario II.
time will tell.
Actually, you should be able to manually replace the .exe of 6.032 over a 6.030 install...
Actually, you should be able to manually replace the 6.032 .exe over the 6.030 .exe...
where on the cd is the tomtom cab? I looked at each folder on both cd's that came with the kaiser and nothing. Any chance someone can send me the file? I will proof I do own tomtom maps and a kaiser, please pm.
It is called "Installer_Kaiser_ttn_6_032_8351_HTC_WWE_20070716.exe" on my cdrom, yours should be the same. The cdrom also has the tomtom logo on it as well.
I have had mine freeze twice now whilst using it, i think it may have something to do with the traffic subscription as i have just had that transferred over to my new kaiser, before it was fine with tomtom. Will continue testing to see how frequent this becomes....
It appears that there are two versions of the applications disk. Can HTC's TomTom app be downloaded from their site?

boy, if some kind sould could put this up someplace...
well i guess seeing as it cannot be installed on any other device apart from the Kaiser I dont see any reason not to post it up as no one apart from Kaisers owners can install it anyway.
Obviously if this causes an issue i will remove it immediately....
HERE
Thx Zomig. Much appreciated!
Thanks! Just need to wait for the 8925 release now and see if there's anything else we're missing.

Hmmm....McHale- I doubt that AT&T will be releasing Tomtom with their units...
I'm sure they're not. I actually meant if they cripple the device in any way like removing the front camera. I still haven't seen an official release that says it has GPS.

What GPS software package are you guys thinking of using?

Well, I am all prepared to buy the Kaiser when it hits the market. I am already looking at the GPS software packages out there for my Kaiser (hopefully GPS is not locked to Telenav). Even if it is locked, I am pretty sure all the good cooks out here will modify the ROM to fix this. What are you all thinking about using?
I've been using Route 66 on my Wizard and it works quite well. DeLorme Pocket Street Atlas is OK but the maps and routing aren't as good.
Lots of people swear by TomTom, and a few reviewers/testers have used it on their pre-production Kaisers. Both semsons.com & buygpsnow.com have a wide selection of GPS software packages.
I use tomtom and find it great.
i think ill also use tomtom. which one is the best?
ive never owned a gps device, so that's the only software ive really heard of..
I've been using OCN6 with my Wizard. . . anxious to see if it works with the Kaiser/8925/Tilt.
Route66 for me. I want my traffic information without having to pay a subscription...
Only thing that could be improved is the frequency of the map updates, where TomTom is the clear winner, but I've had no problems with my R66 map accuracy so far.
regarding the GPS:
Does anyone of you know wether there is GPS Software that could pull images from google maps?
Like a "show me satellite image of my current location" - button?
I think that would be really cool, but does it already exist?
And secondly, I'm looking for a GPS - Software that runs in the background and logs the GPS coordinates in order to geotag photos from my digicam later. Any recommendations here?
Try Mapopolis...
I use Mapopolis and it works and looks great on my ETEN X500+ VGA device. I'll use it when I get the Kaiser too. The resolution will go down but I still love the program.
Mapopolis has a GPS TRAIL option that logs your trip at preset intervals (every 5 minutes, 5 miles or whatever). All you have to do then is use the Location SMS feature of WM6 with pictures attached at capture the places you want. From there, you can create a nice Trip Photo Album with coordinates or send the trip via email.
TEC
I can't really compare software as I have only used Tomtom, but I have always found the program great and have never felt tempted to even try another software package because it has always worked so well.
With my 8525 I purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 which is this awesome little gps receiver that fits in your palm. It's bluetooth and all I do is put the tiny thing in my pocket. It uses Garmin software and works amazingly well. I'm wondering whether this would be MORE accurate than the built in GPS receiver in the Kaiser. If this is more accurate then I'll keep on using it but if the 8925 works just as well then I'll probably sell the garmin.

Wow great find. The downside to this software though is it requires an internet connection to connect to google when planning routes. So, if you don't have coverage then youre going to get lost.
MDA Vario III
The Vario III will be coming with CoPilot out of the box (there are having alot of problems in the testing of this cant cant make it work) they are also having problems gettin the WiFi stay on. So all you UK users who are after the Vario III (me included) will be waiting till the start of Oct
I own "iGuidance" which works on the PocketPC .. will test it out once I have the Kaiser

Says here its coming with tom tom taster version
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/wi...tytn-ii-europe-ultimate-mobile-companion.html
I'll be using iGuidance, as it's what I'm using now on my Hermes...
I'll be using TomTom Nav 6. It also has a satelite download but I've never used it.
I just got my TyTN II and installed iguidance 3.0.1.
It doesn't actually start most of the time. It appears to run once after a reboot but then not again.
I can see the exe in the process list but the app is not actually running. or never finishes starting.
So maybe i will give tom tom a try. LOL
Edit: Oh actually i ran it and waited 10 minutes and the program actually launched.. so there are definitely a few issues.

Actually, I'd love if someone with a Kaiser would try Mapopolis - just load the Los Angeles, USA map and see if it's usable. My Hermes dogs out completely at high zoom levels - I'm presuming due to only 64MB of memory vs the 128MB in my old iPAQ 5555. (By "dogs out" I mean drag-panning the map is extremely jerky and category searches take near to a minute!)
Mapopolis' POI management is second to none, and it's had text-to-speech for ages. TomTom v6.030 is the latest PocketPC version I've found and it still has no text-to-speech, won't allow you to add your own POIs to the canned categories, etc.

Best GPS software

What is the best GPS software that works on the Diamond and why?
From what i can see the big ones are:
Tom Tom
iGo
Destinator
Route66
CoPilot
Google Navigator (yeah ok the wildcard!)
Do any of these have built in/downloadable speed cameras, and do any have traffic information?
I'm sure everyone is else will be asking the same question in about 1 week
Personally I like tomtom the most, it might be that im just used to it cuz I was using it for few years, Garmin mobile xt is pretty decent too. They both have speed cameras/ traffic but it's an extra service. I think traffic is free but you have to buy speed camera locations
i have used IGO,Destinator, Papago & TomTom.
Currently, I have TOMTOM on my diamond and it works great! I think TomTom is very user friendly and provides good info. You can get fixed red light cameras and fixed speed cameras.
I hope this helps

I have Garmin Mobile XT, it is pretty good. When you arrive at the destination, it tells you whether the address is at right or left side of the street. It is especially helpful when you are on a wide street with 2 or more lanes each side, you can be prepared to go left or right. On the other hand Tomtom does not tell you whether the address is on the right or left side of the street. Otherwise they both are comparable.
Just my 2 cents.
What is the difference between Google Navigator and Google Maps?
I´m not able to install tomtom on my diamond it does not find the maps any ideas?
best regards
Herby
I've always used Tomtom. But it hasn't been updated for two years and there is no news of a new verison coming out yet (apart from the usual rumours). I'm going to try Copilot 7.
Copilot was always good (had it years ago) but had a clunky interface. Looks pretty good now its had the interface re-done in the latest version.
Not a bad review of it here...http://www.trustedreviews.com/software/review/2007/11/01/ALK-CoPilot-Live-7-for-Windows-Mobile/p1
Don't know about Destinator or Route66. Never used them. And from other posts in this forum I don't think iGo will work. I think it will only run off a copy protected SD which rules out the Diamond, but I could be wrong on that.
Anyone know the situation with iGo?
Also any previous users have any comments about Route66 or Destinator?
IGo is locked to the micro SD card it is supplied on which is a real shame as it makes putting this application on to a device with no card slot impossible. It also makes it impossible to copy the app/ maps onto a larger card so once you have bought it you only have a small amount of free space available unless you are happy swapping cards all the time where a card slot does exist.
I would consider looking at Route 66, its a decent application although the maps are around 12 months old which seems strange for a very newly released application (version 8 for PPC). These maps are around six months more up to date than the v675 map which is the latest map release that works with TomTom Navigator 6.
Tried Destinator and never bothered putting it back on the PDA, too slow and clunky for my taste, I also have Co-Pilot Live 7 and that seldom gets used because I find the interface too slow although once you get used to it its a decent application, another one is Sygic Live, great potential but the version I used tended to route down back streets, narrow lanes etc to the extent I didn't trust it - Mike
I currently have TomTom and MioMap on my Touch Cruise.
I prefer MioMap.
I have just made the switch from CoPilot 7 to Garmin XT. Garmin seems to have more functionality- or maybe I'm more familiar with it because I have it in my car and it's EXACTLY the same interface!

Google Navigator: http://www.pdafun.net/
So it seems everyone has their favourites! How about from a speed camera/traffic update point of view? Please correct me if i'm wrong.
It seems all of them charge for speed cameras with some anual charge, but by registering for free here you can get an up to date speed cameras POI for the UK for free. http://www.poigenie.co.uk/speed_cameras
There are also other versions around compiled from the official tomtom update and other sources.
For traffic, it seems again they all charge unless your using TMC - which the diamond doesnt have (right?).
Since iGo doesnt work i'm now split between TomTom - because eventually we'll get a v7 rom / and Garmin - because alot of people seem to like it.
I think Copilot speed camera updates are free. But they charge for Traffic info (bout £35 for 2 years ).
Do any of these sat nav apps come with card readers seen as the Diamond doesn't have an SD card slot.
I'm assuming most of these are supplied on SD card
Thanks
I have MioMap3.3 and TomTom V7 on my trinity, I by far preferr MioMap but I have to use TomTom because it has more upto date maps and knows more POST codes than MioMap.
I dont think you have to have an SD card to install either of these programs and they both work perfectly.
I have tried Tomtom, Garmin, Navigon and iGO8 and I think that iGO8 by far is the best one. I think there is a version for the Diamond but I do not know if you can by it without the phone...
It is however quiet easy to install the regular version on a Diamond even without a SD-slot. Just use the searchfunction and you will find an answer in this forum.
I have Tom Tom and it is working fine

What is the verdict on TomTom 7?

To put the question out straight away: for those of you who have been using TomTom 7, is it worth the change over?
I've been reading with great interest (and gratitude) the TomTom 7 threads, most namely:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401679&highlight=TomTom
But as you use it, is it a good result?
A couple of "detail" questions on my TT6 pet peeves:
1) Does TT7 still "take over" the full screen, in my case forcing back to TT6 when I tap on the top heading of the screen while in another program?
2) Will TT7 route to "company names" in the Microsoft Mobile Contact list? (My work around, of course, is simply to copy the company name to the "personal name", but it's tedious.)
Anyway, what's the verdict?
Thanks in advance.

Be fair... He's not asking if iGO is better, i think he just wants to know if tomtom 7 is a decent upgrade over 6, to which I would answer a resounding yes.
I navigated a semi tricky ramp setup in northern NJ, (where the turnpike meets the parkway, which hooks up with 440, which splinters of into the beginning of 287... and not only did I not experience any lag, the the separate ramps are shown in yellow, quite clearly, and it was almost impossible for me to go the wrong way.
Igo over tomtom? I'd say yes. but tt7 over tt6... hell yes. Take the plunge. Graphically nothing new, we all know this. But it gets the job done and I've never had issues with HTC home...
i had TT6 on my TyTN II. and have recently upgraded to TT7 and i think its great. the map is more detailed, it has speed limits on known major roads, and if you go 2 much over the limit it beeps telling u 2 slow down. you can also manually set a maximum speed limit and if you go over it beeps. (that saved me a speeding fine on my last trip to the peninsular) you can have a quick menu on screen all the time with just options you want in it. like quick set to night mode, or mark GPS position or mute. you can also make some changes to the map yourself, like street names and whatever, but from i see you cant change the speed limit of a street.
i will admit its the only software i have had installed on my PPC but its so good i have no need to look anywhere else.

i am using TT7 and TT7 does use the entire screen but when u hit the red phone it is still running in the background.and u can always go back to it on the bottom right hand corner of your phone. even when the screen is off it will tell u when to make the next turn. so it is always running unles u manual exit the application
i think it is a great peice of work. picks up more sat. and it gives u many more options
For me upgrading to version 7 is a must, cause is the only way to use 7.20 maps. And there are much differences between v6 and v7 maps here in Spain
Haven't notice much differences in the soft, for me works fine both versions, 6 and 7.
Cheers.
Ive used miomap, igo, tt6 and tt7. I really liked miomap but got tired of disabling htc home. Once TT7 came out I tried it and never went back.
I love tt7, but i was using telenav. as said above it gets the job done.
TomTom Home 2.2
Guys,
Maybe a little bit off topic, but can you use TomTom Home (2.2)? With TomTom Home you can update your maps with mapshare.
The version of TT Home which you can download in first place, can not upgrade my maps.
I downloaded TT Home 2.2, but then my Kaiser has not been detected.
Someone any suggestions?
Temba
Thanks everyone. Most helpful.
A little follow-up:
1) Is the extracted TomTom 7 fully functional? That is, if it was "tuned" for the Diamond, do all the features work the way they are supposed to, perhaps like a 720 or 730?
2) Does the MapShare function as intended? (setting aside for the moment if it's useful feature yet). That is, any bugs due to extraction from the Diamond?
Again thanks,
Capn
how do i get IGO on my tilt?
im from NJ usa ..is it possible?
TT7 is the ****....not that super detailed but always shows the fastest route, speed camera and going over the speed limit notification beeps are very solid.
Washington d.c area is complete and down to a T..even new structures and ramps. Clear difference in options from TT6.
.. I mean I haven't tried IGO or another gps program other then google maps but I don't really consider that navigation...so I dunno the difference in other apps, but TT7 seems to get the job done. I don't really see anything else to expect more from it, I always get where I want..fast
A Resounding YES!
Tried iGo8 before TT7 came out and hated it. Looks great but probably the most unintuitive GPS software I've ever seen. TT6 over TT7? Yes, absolutely.
Only thing I hate is the muting of sound when you have a GPRS data connection.
I tried TT awhile ago, wasn't impressed. I ended up with Garmin XT, which I like alot (I have a car unit by them), but would consider iGo8 or the latest TT7 if one or the other is really better.
Can only compare TT7 to TT6, but I've gone back to TT6.
Yes, you need TT7 for the latest Teleatlas v7 maps and there are a few minor enhancements within TT7 over TT6, but I've gone back to TT6 because the route calculation on TT7 is a nightmare.
I've checked and its the software version rather than the map version, because TT7 does the same whether using V6 maps or V7 maps.
On a number of occasions, its taken me over narrow, single track back roads when there is a main road travelling parallel that I knew to be better and when I actually forced TT7 to calculate the better main-road route I knew - it was actually quicker!
Many people say that the last v6 maps from Navteq which Tomtom used until they bought Teleatlas are actually better than the later Teleatlas ones.
So I'm back using the "better calculating" TT6 software and the v6 Navteq maps and that will do me...
scroll wheel doesn't work anaymore with TT7
One thing very annoying for me with TT7 is that the scroll wheel (hardware button) doesn't work anymore on the kaiser for zoom/dezoom and for scrolling through adresses and city names ! This was working with TT6 but no more with TT7

GPS - Am I on the right track?

Hi, I have just bought a second hand Touch Pro and love it, much more intuitive than my tytn.
I have got rid of the awful vodafone stuff and put on the latest hardspl, the standard rom, and the 1.12.25.19 radio and everything seems to be working well - that is apart from the GPS.
I have done some searching and the general consensus seems to be, to put on GPS Test by chartcross. I'm trying to run Tomtom Navigator 5 v5.210.
Is this the best thing to do and does Navigator 5 work with the touch pro?
Is there better software than Tomtom (I'm in the UK if it makes any difference)?
Thanks,
Barnaby
Route 66 maybe or navigon?
Wayfinder?
Time to pay up!
Tomtom will not allow activation on your new device unless you can prove your old one no longer works or is broken ! Their support is something close to useless. However Tomtom 7 does have more features than 5 or 6 and western europe maps are available to download at under £40... this still represents, in my opinion, good value. I can see your frustration (if you can prove your old device is gone tomtom will simply insist you need tt7 for the touchpro anyway!)
tomtom 7?!
Thanks for your reply, I can only see Navigator 6 on the Tomtom site and it's priced at just under £90! Where do I get version 7 and for £40?!
by the way, my old Tomtom software did authorise ok - must just be a fluke...
I could never get my TomTom5 work on the TP.
You can find TomTom7 by doing a search in this site, the executable is ok to distribute if I remember correct, but you still have to install TomTom home and buy the maps.
TomTom7 is way better than v.5 ...
Tomtom home
The v6 you see is a dvd install, v7 is only available via download (hence is cheaper). To get it you must go to the tom tom web site and download tomtom home 2 ( latest version is 2.5.2.60 , its free) onto your pc. Then connect your touchpro and you'll be able to download maps online, western europe was £39.95 last I looked.
ok, sooo...
Again, thanks for your replies.
Right I have downloaded and installed Tomtom7 with the maps. I have installed gps test and gps tweaks... still no satellite lock in gps test.
I found an extensive page on this site all about gps problems, where I learned about gps test, but I can't find it again!
Please help me or point me in the direction of the main gps problems page. I have searched and searched for it!
Thanks,
Barnaby
I have no GPS test, and radio .19 as well. I can get a fix with tomtom in under 1 minute. THE FIRST HOOKUP ON TOMTOM IS HORRIBLE!!! Just letting you know. I put it by a window and walked off. Probably took around 5 minutes. After that, I get a fix in less than 1 minute every time. Like I said, first time is the hardest. Good luck!!
Try using QuickGPS...
Helps me get locks almost immediatly!
I have both Tom Tomm and Garmin installed...
I simply prefer Garmin!
