Hey Guys. My AT&T Tilt phone has become insanely slow over time and when I go to text message people, when im using the keyboard, half the time letters will not register so I will have to wait for it to get up to speed and very slowly type out letter by letter. Also, a lot of the times I will have to press the key multiple times just to get it to be recognized. I was wondering if I flash the phone with a ROM, will it fix this problem?
Usually this problem can be attributed to not having enough free memory on it. try flashing a nother rom and I'll bet that will solve your problem or just clean out your phone.
i took my att rom off, and typing has become so much easier for me..
I use the hyperdragon rom now,
but it is true, u shouldnt try typing a text message when using heavy programs on any rom. it just drains out all the ram that u need.
I'm having the same problem. I have a lot of things installed, but 90% of it is on the card. I have 96MB free on the device. Nothing but ActiveSync is actually running.
Hmmmmm i know ive read many places that more than likely the slowness in typing comes from T9. Search for "Disable T9"....... people have made cabs to bake it easy.
OK. I disabled the "suggest words" option in the settings. I'll see if that helps.
Maybe you guys need to read where to install softwares on pocket pc and also how to backup your pocket pc.
By installing in appropriate locations, the device can be free from junk and even if junk accumulates, backing up pocket pc helps in future.
Regards,
Carty..
Thank you Carty!
I found out why my tilt was laggy! its cuz i installed everything on storage card! even if it was supposed to be installed on the device (aka system files and related system processes)
turning off the word correction did help a little. it's still slow but nowhere near as bad.
try this it worked great for me

Last night I got a popup saying that my storage memory was low. it was at .05mb. I thought this was a bit low, but I went and deleted some stuff and got it up to 5.5mb. I then actually watched the memory count down to .01. I dont know if this is a virus or what. I tried to use sprite but it didnt work, also there is an icon was added to my HTC launch page, looks like a piece of paper witha windows symbol.
i have HTC Home, touch cube, kaiser tweak, voice command, garmin xt, just the basics. Please help
try clearing the browser's cache. the same thing happened on my old ppc even though I know I didn't have much installed, but clearing the cache fixed it.
I dont think it was the cache that was the problem but i could be wrong, i kept deleting stuff and nothingi did worked. Also when i hooked it up to sync it just kept cycling through the sync.
Needless to say i just did the hard/doft reset back the the beginining. Now I have to decide whether or not to reinstall all the programs or flash the rom
Are you using a cooked or stock ROM? A lot of cooked ROMs will contain fixed-size page pools, and while they are great for performance, they tend to have memory leaks.
i am using a the stock rom
None of the programs you listed are known for causing memory leaks, so I would reload all of them as usual, and see if the problem returns.
It may have just been some registry corruption causing it.
Well Windows is know to cause Memory issues.
Best thing I can recommend is a Hard Reset and Restore all your programs.

I see you're using Garmin XT, now i don't use that program, but does it download maps? I know that most mapping programs can chew through memory like you wouldn't believe. I use all the other programs and have never run out of memory before...of course truth be told, i've never left a rom on for very long either...
Hey guys
I was wondering, I've noticed that no matter which ROM I flash onto my kaiser, after a couple of weeks it slows down tonnes, it gets really really bad interface lag and all, but after a flash it is speedy and responsive. I was wondering to what extent having lots of SMSs stored and call logs might effect this but it seems in my mind that it should be negligible.
Is this a known bug with a fix or do I just need to reflash every week?
Thanks guys
Rich

What Hard SPL version are you using?
You should be using Hard SPL 3.* for WM6.1 ROMs.

Dave
3.29 ... it's confusing
On the newest dk4 though, whatever that is. Might flash to DK5 later today if I have the willpower lol.
My guess is theres some service trying to do something with the sms messages like indexing and when you have 500 messages it just uses so much system resources everything slows down.
That would explain why when you type to search for a text the results are almost instant. But really the feature isn't that good to justify it being this slow.
You running it with zero installed apps? I'd guess something is misbehaving.
I would assume if you hard reset, the problem completely goes away? I can't imagine it being fixed by flashing.
My Tilt has its fits.. Sometimes it moves very slow and a reset may or may not mostly fix it, other times it just blazes with zero lag. If I look in MemMaid, I see no CPU hogs, ram is reasonable, etc.. Static 6M pagepool... Oh well.
A soft reset almost always fixes it going slow for me. I've never hard reset, certainly not reflashed to get it back up to norm.
Hard reset doesn't really speed it up, but return to m'facturer settings does. Unless that is a hard reset lol. Basically - turning on/off doesn't speed up but holding down softkeys at bootup and clearing off data like you do when you flash does speed it up.
I'm not running it with 0 aps though, I get the bundled apps with the roms. But really its never really mattered which ROM it is.
After deleting a few hundred messages manually, it's sped up dramatically, so I'm going to push the boat out and guess it is actually the SMSs that is slowing it down.
Well, there are several things that will help slow the phone down.
sms messages
lengthy call logs
Temporary internet files
programs that are not totally closed when you close them (check out task manager or battery status)
Things like this slow it down. Oh and a hard reset takes it back to factory.

<pedantic>Hard reset resets it back to the ROM defaults. Factory isn't quite the right word, since he's using a cooked rom.</pedantic>
It seems weird that just 'more data' will slow things down. I mean if you have a PC with a data hard disk, it shouldn't matter whether it has 1gb of files or 500gb of files, the PC should still run just as fast for everything except the tasks which must directly deal with the files i.e. search / defragmentation and that kind of thing.
I'll just remember to delete my SMS messages frequently now, I guess. Seems a shame since the Nokia N95 has no problems holding hundreds and this is supposed to be a superior phone.

There must be some behind-the-scenes processing going on with messages, and other data -- perhaps the phone has to sort them -- who knows?
Anyway when I get a message (which isn't too often) I delete it right away -- and if I need to keep it as a note or a reminder then I'll type it in as a note or as a task.
Which reminds me -- how come we don't have a context menu to turn a SMS or MMS into a new contact, note, task or calendar item??
I can confirm the SMS theory. I think threaded SMS are particularly responsible for slowing down the device. I basically have one person i talk to mostly, which has a very very long threaded sms (basically weeks of SMS in one thread) and my device got very slow and unresponsive as well. This becomes particularly clear when you try to WRITE a SMS! Typing lags, the menu comes up slowly etc. So i deleted the sms thread (left the threads to other ppl which contained like 3-4 msgs each) and it was fine!
I think the phone loads the WHOLE sms, even the parts it doesnt show and that slows things down.
I have searched and found some thread's about this sort of this but not exactly the same problem. I am using GARMIN'S FINAL ROM which I must say it awesome. Stable and the fastest I have seen yet but I am still have one problem, at certain point's my phone doesn't respond to touch, clicking of the front key's and even sometime I have to press button's on the keyboard 3 or 4 time's just to get it to type. I thought it could just be lag but even when I give the phone a few second's to do it's thing (load fully) it doesn't work properly? I mean even sometime's when I press the end key the friggin button's don't even light up.
I hope there is some help because I just got the Tilt and it seem's like a great phone but this is just getting to be stupid.
Thank's ahead of time.
i have the same issue with hyper dragon rom. and no, im not running any programs, memory usage is 48% (running nothing) however the screen wont respond to touchs, the keyboard wont respond etc but the cursor still blinks, animations still play etc.
ive already tried all of the "keyboard" fix's, adjusted the settings manually etc yes i calibrated the screen multiple times *waits for somebody to reflash even though i did that *
I was having that problem and I found the only way to workaround it was to re-align The screen in the Start>Settings>System>Screen menu. But, I have not had it since installing SJ's 15 November 08] HyperDragon III Raphael version here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397121
I strongly recommend it. All you need to do is remember to install Opera 9 last per Notes at the top of the post.
Hope that helps.
I am going to try that out, it look's cool but it look's like there is way to much stuff for it to run fast? Also if I don't use Opera I don't need to install it correct?
bump! Any other idea's?
I have the same problem but mostly notice it when the phone comes out of sleep. The phone will work right then slow to a stop and not allow any input via the screen or keys. 10 seconds later it's good to go.
Edit
OK the fix I can confirm that woks is that you have to sim unlock your phone with the newer 6.1 roms. I did it and it completely fixed my lag problem. Use the kaiser unlocker to do it and it can be found with a simple search. Make sure you have a the right SPL and newer radio to make sure everything is compatible.
hey guys, not sure whats going on, but my tilt lately keeps freezing, but it only freezes when i go into landscape mode. i've ran the same programs for a long time (palringo, google maps, live search, kaiser tweak and srs wow) i'm not even running skyfire anymore, and i've uninstalled my opera browser but it keeps freeze. i've done some reflashes and hardware resets, and only ran the above programs, and it still ends up freezing when i put it into landscape. Anyone know what could be causing this? it doesn't matter if im typing landscape in notes, palringo, PIE or anything else, always freezes. The ironic thing is that if i bust out my stylus and type w/ that using the soft keyboard it seems to run just fine (but slows me down A LOT). any help would be much appreciated.
Do you mean your hardware keyboard lags?
If so in software is a speedup keyboard .cab.

no its not a keyboard lag by any means, the phone literally freezes. i dont even have to type when its in lanscape mode for it to freeze, as soon as the screen changes orientation it freezes immediately

Thanks for clarification, just that you say soon as use onscreen keyboard no issue, are you using a stock ROM? Does it happen on a clean flash no programs installed?

sorry, i should have given a lot more info, but i had to jet to class. Anyways, its not the stock rom, i'm running NATF's Lite rom (no TF3D). I actually downloaded originally around september/nov/dec of 08 (dont remember, but its been months that i've been running it). And never had a problem with it...now all of a sudden it seriously craps out everytime i run it. I tried running Hyperdragons IV Lite and i was experiencing some of the same problems. I'm really starting to think its one of the problems i'm running, so i'm going to to a hard reset (again) and see if it runs just palringo, and google maps w/out any problems. its just getting super frustrating to be honest. i'm running the exact same programs that i've ran for the last year, but now its deciding to act up. hopefully its something in the software and not hardware
ok...so i got home, and installed the OEM att tilt rom. really, no matter what program i install, pretty much anything. the freezing occurs. any out there familiar w/ cell phone hardware? i'm thinking that might be the cause, if so...do you think there's anything that can be done/replaced to fix it?
Hi, this started happening to my just today also! At first I thought it was the onscreen keyboard that made my phone freeze (as I have seen others with the same issue) and thought I could fix it by using another keyboard app. I used SPB's keyboard and it prevents my phone from freezing and I'm able to type things using it. BUT my phone STILL freezes when I put it in landscape mode and try to type something. It freezes after typing a couple of letters. This is stock ROM; I've never flashed it.
Is there a .dll I can use to repair or anything of the sort?
Btw, I'm using a Tilt. Thanks!
anyone have any method ..to prevent this problem???
I find that if restart the phone few times will freeze at gray screen .."the original HTC gray blank screen with loading box in the middle" but the antenna reception green light is normal blinking (all the button not functioning).... -solution have to press reset button below ...
so now everytime install new program very scare to restart .. if un lucky ..will stuck at that screen.... really wonder why ...is it the WM6.1 not stable???
I use motorola linux ..no such problem...

Try the relevant ROM thread also look at your hardSPL version. Some users have fewer freezing probs just by updating hardSPL.

Not at all, there's definitely something wrong with your setup if it wont even boot fully. Maybe a hard reset and some testing between installing each individual program will weed out the culprit. That said I've found (at least the HTC official) WM 6.0 ROMs to be much more reliable and stable than WM 6.1 ROMs.

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but is there a HardSPL update for OEM OS?

Not as such - hardSPL is made by dedicated folks who have customised the OEM version but installing it will mean you no longer have an 'official' setup. That said, you can always revert to the official HTC SPL if needed for eg a warranty return. You could also install a newer HTC SPL for your ROM (as long as it's compatible *be careful about this* - eg I'm using the 1.93 HTC SPL with my ROM instead of the 1.56 SPL). This is all explained in the Kaiser wiki (through the xda-wiki button above) so it's well worth having a good read there
aaaahh I looked around. and I can't find a driver to reinstall for the hardware keyboard... I'm assuming this would fix it~
Sorry to double post but I just wanted to say I fixed the problem by backing up and restoring with SKTools after doing a hard reset. It makes me think, what exactly caused the problem in the first place if doing this fixes it? Is there anything that SKTools leaves behind in an All System backup? Perhaps something messed with my registry causing the keyboard to freeze the phone when used.
I'd hate to think my phone can actually get spyware now. Maybe Skyfire's true desktop viewing of webpages allows for this to happen?
Let me know what you guys think

If I will you to avoid ...uninstall this soft keyboard ... use back the original keyboard at the time being and see... if u restore back what is the diff compare to now ... If I not wrong still the same ...
FYI, I got this freezing problem is after I have install PCM kb 0.14 ...then I try install & uninstall & install ..and need to restart the phone ..2 out of 4 time is freeze at loading screen .. now really worry is it b'cos I uninstall it at the same time have remove certain original files .....
WM is diff with windows ...lack of tool to chk which system files damage .... I really hate hard reset ..just like computer... imagine keep format the hard disk ....
Hard reset comparible to system recovery process

If only restoring a full size PC was as easy and quick as hard restting. Sure there's a little work involved in reinstalling apps after completing the hard reset but if the apps are well designed ones that install via activesync, that's as easy as going to Activesyncs add and remove programs function and ticking a box. If this is not available then maybe the old app is the cause of the problem?
A hard reset every now and again is very useful for maintaining peak performance and it certainly weeds out whether a problem is hardware or software related pretty quickly.
So, I really needed/wanted a program, like the locking slider for the iphone, for my phone. And eventually, I stumbled across S2U2, I didn't read about any big issues with it, and everyone loved it. So I installed it right away last night on my phone. My phone worked Lag FreeandFlawlesslybefore installing the app. After the installation of the latest VGA version of the app, it worked great and did everything I needed it to do, with hardly any noticeable lag on the phone or anything since installing it. Today, it still worked great, however, I accidentally did a soft reset on my phone, and when it booted back up .... I was getting MAJOR LAG. I tried to close every program and shut down S2U2, but that did absolutely nothing. The memory status in task manager said it was only at about 30-32%, as it normally is with no programs running in the background, but this time, the phone is lagging horrendously. It's so bad, I can't even access my texts messages readily, sometimes they take forever to load when opening one. I knew S2U2 had to be the problem, so I uninstalled it using the add/remove program option in the windows settings folder. After that, I did another soft reset. Great, the program is now gone, however, the same horrible lag is still there. Did the program edit a reg key or something? I'm almost certain the program is the root of this evil. Can someone please help me out? If no one can, I'll try to e-mail the developer, but he'll probably be browsing around on here anyway. Also, I'm sorry if this is not the right place for such a post, my apologies.
P.S- I'm running the latest Verizon Stock ROM, which was released fairly recently, and therefore, this phone is on the Verizon Network.
Thanks,
Chris
