Disconnect GPRS in standby - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I know there are plenty of utilities/hacks to automatically disconnect GPRS after a certain time of inactivity. I don't want that. What I want is for GPRS to disconnect immediately when I put the phone in standby.
I've searched high and low for some tweak or hack that allows me to do this. I know it can be done, because I've done it before, but I'll be darned if I can remember how. Previously, I was using an HTC official ROM, but now I'm using the AT&T official ROM. Maybe that makes a difference, but I don't think so.
And yes, I know I can just hold the red button for a few seconds, but since I had this feature before, I want it back!

I read this somewhere, and just tried it. Works pretty slick. It does just what you want. It will automatically disconnect any data session when you put your phone in standby mode. Also it will automatically disconnect like 30sec-1minute after any program is done/not using it. To try it out, I started up Skyfire then pushed my power button to put it to sleep, when I woke it up the data was automatically reconnected since skyfire was still open. Oh and I too am using AT&T standard ROM.
Open up your REG editing software
Navigate to (HKLM>Comm>ConnMgr>Planner>Settings)
Click on (SuspendResume)
Change Value Data to: "GPRS_bye_if_device_off"
make sure to include the parenthesis.
Then click on (Cache Time)
Make it HEXADECIMAL
Change the Value Data to: 0000003C
Soft Reset
Hope this helps

Ghost device? Not registering..

Hi there,
Firstly, be gentle - I'm new to all this.
My Kaiser has recently started to mess with me. It will not connect with my PC for activesync. I've tried plugging it into PC's at work too all with the same problem: the host PC's do not notice the device being plugged into the USB however the phone will start to charge from the PC's USB.
I've tried disabling the "advanced network functionability" toggle, and even different USB cables.
I really don't want to hard reset the device until I get Sprite working (after an upgrade which I cannot do due to not being able to connect).
Whoever can help will make my Christmas card list this year
Frank.
You can have SPB backup your phone to an executable .exe file on you SD card if you have room and then hard reset.
Only problem with this is when you do a restore, you will probably restore the fault again.
Best option is just to backup your data (no apps or settings) with SPB, do a hard reset and put any cabs back on one by one to check if its one of those causing the prob.
Thank's for the suggestion Farsquidge. It looks like this will have to be the solution unless others have been through this.
It's annoying that WM6 is such a pain. So many small bugs on this device it makes me question where I'd rather settle with a mobile: Versatility + unreliability OR Normal phone + reliability.

I hope someone can help you further on this.
It can be a pain to get them set up just how you want them but once working they are great!
With all the complex functions it has, there is no wonder people have problems (how many times do people reset their PC's or have a game or app crash it?)
That's what this forum is about, no-one knows everything and sharing info is the best way to do it. I find tons of uesful info and tips on here that just keep on enhancing the unit but, inevitably, I may add an app, or a tweak just not right for my phone and have to resort to the old hard reset and put it all back on again.
It's fun but gives you a wakeup kick at times!
Forgot to suggest, if you do not already have SP Backup, (because you cant sync) put your SD card in a compatible card reader on your PC then run it on your phone.
My suggestion would be this - download the trial for SPB Pocket Plus and install it (they have a CAB available). In the settings, go enable the "Safe Mode" boot option and soft reset. When the Safe Mode dialog appears, boot in safe mode and see if your computer recognizes the phone now.
If it does, something you've installed is messing with your phone. Start rolling back installations and resetting taking off the app at the top of the list under Remove Programs. After each app, boot in normal mode and see if you can connect. If not, rinse and repeat.
If you ever get a "normal" connection, you'll know which app or combination of apps caused your problem.

Nice one!! I only have the SPB 'Lite' that came on the HTC CD that does not have that option. Will look at their site for an upgrade myself.

PIN lock Kaiser when screen is turned on (as security setting)

I used to be able to simply turn off my Trinity to engage a PIN lock.
I want to be able to have the phone locked, once the screen is turned on again as oppose to a timely interval of x minutes (very annoying).
I cant seem to remember how I enabled this feature on my Trinity.
Any help?
Hi MrTW,
If I understood you correctly this should work?
1. Go to Start>Settings>Lock
2. Tick "Prompt if device is unused for"
3. Set the time option to 0 Minutes
That should do it - let me know how you get on.
Zippyioa
Hi zippyioa,
this is how it used to work on my Trinity. On the Tilt however it locks every 30 seconds or so and requires for me to enter the PIN (pretty annoying).

Hi MrTW,
The instructions I gave you should set the phone to ask for a pin when you switch it on - isn't that what you wanted?
Zippyioa
yep, that is what it does essential. But on top of it the phone PIN locks each 30 seconds of none use.
I would like to have the phone PIN locked only when the screen is switched off; once the screen is on it shouldnt look.
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks for helping out!

I get what you mean. You want the phone to ask for a PIN code when you switch it on, but you dont want it to ask you for a PIN code after x seconds of not using it.
I have searched for an answer but cant find one
You said you could do this on your Trinity - maybe it was available in WM5 but has been removed in WM6?
Any ideas anyone??
The other option you could try is to look at 3rd party software like this?
Let me know how you get on - this problem is bugging me now!!
Zippyioa
I had this too on my trin running WM6. I want it on the Kaiser ! I tried the 0 second thing, doesn't work right =(
My phone is policy locked by my corporate IT so I can't try this, but try setting the lock time and the auto-off time to the same value. Sounds like you already know where to find the lock time...the auto-off time is at Start->Settings->System Tab->Power->Advanced Tab.
Seems to me that if you set both to say 5 minutes, you're phone would stay on if you're using it and turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Since that is the same value as your lock time, it would be locked when you turned it back on.
Of course, the obvious trade-off here is battery life.
well, this solution also does not work.
The phone locks after 5 minutes (which makes sense, since I tell the phone to lock) but the phone does not ask for a PIN entry if i turn the screen back on again.
Its funny that this pretty important feature has been forgotten - time for someone to write a little program and earn a few bucks (I am the first to buy).
Thanks for all the help so far!

Workaround
Hey, I've been looking for a solution to this for some time and I have finally figured out a way, to enable this feature. It's pretty ugly and I'm sure one of the gifted programmers out there could write a little program to do this all-in-one in no time, as mentioned above...! But anyway, here goes:
First of all, you need a program, that will allow you to call up the PIN lock functionality via a shortcut (alternatively, if you figure out where in the PPC file structure this command is hidden, this would work as well and possibly quicker). I use the freeware PocketToolman for this. Download here http://pockettoolman.blogspot.com/ and install. Then either: a) launch the program (which initially will only activate the tray icon), tap on the tray icon, go to settings - options and click through to the last page where you can find "Create PT Function shortcuts", tick the box saying PIN Lock and press OK or b) if you prefer creating shortcuts yourself, you can call the Toolman exe file using "/Lock" after the filepath (no inverted commas) and place this shortcut in a convenient place.
The second part of the solution, is to get a program, that allows you to manipulate notification queues. I personally use MemMaid (http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/) which unfortunately is not freeware, but a lovely tool, worth paying for. The interesting thing is, that for the purpose of this exercise, you may be able to get away with using only the trial version. (There is the possibility, that there may be freeware out there, that can emulate this particular functionality, but frankly I couldn't be bothered to look, as it took me ages to figure this out as it is! ;-) ) Anyway, assuming you use MemMaid (and I would recommend you try it out using that, to see if it will work on your device as well...) you open it up and go to the 2nd tab at the bottom (at least for me, I'm using v2.0). That should take you into the notification queue. If not, then try the drop down menu at the top, to give you more options for that tab. Now you click on the "add" button and on the following screen click on the three dots next to program and choose either the automatically created shortcut from Toolman (should be in the Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder, may differ if you have a different native language) option a) or choose the shortcut you created yourself using option b) above. Now the final step is to change the event type from "Run at time" to "The device woke up". A click on add and then on OK and Voilà! You have a PPC that will no longer autolock when on, only when the device is woken up from suspension and on reboot or cold boot! Well, technically that's not quite true, a little thing I forgot and should've mentioned earlier: You need to turn the WM Lock on via settings-personal-lock for this all to work, as this method builds on WM resources and the setting to use for the time is of course 24h, as that is the longest available. So tecnically the other time you will be prompted for a password, is if you leave your device on (not suspended) and don't use it for 24h! For me at least, this is a relatively unrealistic scenario, as I really cannot see myself going 24h without my Uni! ;-) Hope this has helped you guys, btw if the need arises, I could translate all this into German if that would help anybody, I'm just too lazy to do so right now!
Ok known bug: It seems not to work the first time you suspend and reawaken the device after a reboot, but after that it works just fine.

Tilt very very unresponsive today.

Its not letting me receive any calls. Because by the time I press "Accept" it becomes unresponsive for like a couple of mins and the call has already ended.
Its taking forever to load any apps too. It takes forever to open the Programs folder or the Settings folder. Everything takes like a min on the phone now.
I don't know what has caused this. It was working fine yesterday. I haven't installed any new apps either.
I have the HTC stock ROM downloaded from this website. I've had it installed for a few months now without a problem.
Can someone please help me in understanding whats causing this?
I've restarted the phone a few times now. The boot time is around 15 mins for some reason. It stays at the Window Mobile 6 screen for 15 mins before starting up.
Hard reset anyone?
Is that the only solution?
I'm sick of this and slowing turning anti-windows.
Some times things need to be refreshed. Don't be scared, it will be ok.

Have you, by chance, been experimenting with network folders? I saw something similar with the file explorer, after I had connected to a network drive at home. It was trying to reconnect while I was away from the home network.
You should expect it from any electronic device like this. Maybe not 100% of the time and not 100% of them, but things like this do happen. There are too many things trying to live in harmony and not step on each others feet for there to never be a problem.
Do a hard reset and see what happens. If it doesn't solve your problem then it's time to look into a warranty claim. If you can use the phone, just backup your numbers and then reset. It's really easy and doesn't take much time to get things back to normal.

I've done this (hard reset) before and I have every right to complain. Not trying to be a troll, but sometimes I feel I should've bought an iP***e instead.
Right now I'm trying to take a backup of my files on the Storage card, but Total Commander is unresponsive (trying to copy 5 files for the past 30 mins).
I know I'll eventually hard reset this thing, but I'm just pissed right now.
So you don't think people have to hard reset their iphones? I laugh in your general direction.
If you can't make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access email or the web
Check the cell signal indicator in the status bar at the top of the screen. If there are no bars, or if it says "No service," try moving to a different location. If you're indoors, try going outdoors or moving closer to a window.
Check to make sure you’re in an area with network coverage. Go to your carrier's website to see network coverage areas.
Make sure airplane mode isn't on. From the Home screen choose Settings, then turn Airplane Mode off.
If that doesn't work, turn airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, then turn airplane mode off again.
Make sure to include an area code for every phone number in your contacts list that you use to send or receive text messages.
If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: If you enter the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
If that doesn't work, there may be an issue with your wireless service. Call your carrier or go to your carrier's website.
If that doesn't work, restore the iPhone software. See this document or see "Updating and Restoring iPhone Software" in the iPhone User's Guide.

is it possible that its just having trouble reading the sd card (if you have one?) maybe the file system is becoming corrupt on the card and its constantly trying to read it?..

I thought about this. I tried using the phone without the SD card. But the behavious was the same. Currently I'm hard resetting it
So how did it go?
Just finished hard resetting it. The phone works now. Fortunately I had an export of my contacts in an XML file (using a .NET utility that I wrote.) Unfortunately, I haven't written the import part of the utility yet
The phone works, but my docs and pics are gone. The SD card works fine. Thanks for your help guys.
Outlook works nice for backing up contacts and there is also a program you run from your phone that does the same thing. I think it's PIM backup
use cleartemp from now on to clear unneeded items on every start up
it is pim back up
its the BEST

Odd Kaiser Problem - Shuts Down on Web Browsing

Don't know if this is a new problem or a different appearance for a common problem, but my kaiser has taken to switching off when I browse the web (on battery). On charger it's fine and I'm posting like that now.
I'll start at the beginning
For Most Web Browsing I Use Opera 9.51 Beta 15894 over the last fed weeks I had recieved a number of low space warnings and removed various programs to try and resolve it without success. I went to check the size of Opera's cache and found the Application data/Opera 9.5 Beta folder was full of Corrupted files marked at sizes ranging from 18Kb to 1.3Gb (unlikely since the drive is only 256Mb)
I tried various routes to delete these files, booting into safemode, downloading scandisk style tools (which despite advertising only scanned/repaired mmory cards.) In the end I simply renamed the folder and recreated the original Opera folder.
Since then, if I'm using the internet whilst not plugged in, the phone will turn off after 15 minutes. The browser in use doesn't matter what browser is in use (opera and skyfire have both done it)
Sometimes it then has dificulty turning back on, reaching the Windows Mobile Screen and shutting back down. But if you wait a few minutes it will turn on fully.
In some cases the battery is still full and can go a whole day of idling/using apps/making calls and texting without problems but will shut down again on using a web browser.
I'm usually quite good at isolating problems, but this has me stumped at first I though an Opera bug or Virus, but skyfire ruled out the former and I can't find any information on the existence of the latter. Does anyone have ideas/suggestions?
I don't understand why it only shuts down on battery power, that's a strange one, but I guess the first thing to do is sort your low memory problem.
Have you tried clearTemp?
http://mobisapienz.com/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=82&task=finish&cid=50&catid=12
This attached cab can let you have a look at what is taking up space.
Have you considered backing up and hard reseting?? That sorts out every problem!
At first I thought it was a battery/charging issue - which Opera certainly does affect. If I leave Opera running in the foreground during a charging cycle then a charge won't last more than a few hours - I think the browser regularly does refreshes powering everything on and using almost as much power as it's getting in to it. But the fact in this case that after finally getting it turned back on I have enough power to go the whole day suggests it's not that.
I saw the link for these utilities earlier today and will take a shot at using them. I worry however that these corrupted files showing a size in the Gb range may throw everything off and I won't find the real culprits.
With my two previous phones (HTC Wizard and Nokia 9300) Hard Resets left me with no end of problems - so whilst I have it in my mind it will be the very very last resort.
Well I hope one of the programs helps you find the problem.
As far as hard reseting goes, it should put your phone back to normal with everything cleared!? - a fresh start!!
If I didn't flash new ROMs so often I'd do this regularly anyway just to stop the phone lagging etc....
Before I hard reset I always think "if my phone got stolen what would I be gutted about losing" - I back those up and get it done!
I'm sure you can find some free backup software on a search, PIM backup is the obvious one.....
Good luck.
i had a siemens phone some years back that had a similar problem. when connected with a pc using a special data cable connection to the rs232 port and trying to sync, the screen dimmed and after a few seconds, the phone died
problem was, the battery was not charged when connected and was way to old and damaged and unable to handle the power consumption caused by the sync. the phone worked fine with a new battery.

@Operative1
I was thinking the same, especially when it started happening during phonecalls as well.
However yesterday I found that the file corruption problem had spread affecting several other apps as well as Opera. Pocket player was the worst affected.
So I went for a Backup and Hard Reset and it went off without incident. I've been intermitently testing Opera this morning and it hasn't done it yet.
I'm also know the corruption was affecting my registry, so I'm wondering if it was also affecting the charging/power management software.
I'll keep monitoring and report back if it re-appears.
Phone Shuts down when browsing web

Mine has now spread and affects everything, phone calls, texts, last night it went using Pocket Player. I've been considering fully discharging and recharging the battery but these intermittent cut-outs don't allow it to fully discharge.

8 hours in with the new battery and no problems. I've upgraded to a 2600mA one so I'm hoping the extra life will allow me a full charge/discharge cycle to prevent it happening again. I'll also be disabling charging duuuring internet connection sharing.
Sweet so no more turning off while browsing the web??? Where did you get your battery from?? Thanks!
A new battery would be the only fix for this. I had the same problem a while back with mine and I took a volt meter to the old battery and at full charge it was only out 3.6~V instead of the 4.2 so when something like a data connection was going the phone didn't have enough power to stay on and it shut off. it got so bad at one point that I couldn't even boot the phone without plugging it in.

And since then has been working like a champ, no more reboots or going off, I have been using the Skyfire a lot in the last two days with the normal phone calls and the battery is still at 36%
This has been the best $18 dls that I have invest.

i try 'clear storage' in the settings, put 1234, after that i install the HardSPL, put a new room and new radio version.
hard reset its different?
how i do this?
sorry for the question, when i install a new room i do a hard reset follow this steps:
d. NOTE: After you flash the ROM, when you get to the whole "Please tap the
screen to begin setting up your Windows-Mobile based device", hard reset by
holding down the two soft keys while pushing the stylus into the reset hole.
You should get to a white-colored screen. Just follow the directions on that
screen and then reboot. This fixes many issues, and is also known to make your ROM perform at 100%.
my last choise is buy a new battery!
travelingsurfer, the battery do you buy is 1600mah?
i question this because my frind have a kaiser and i change my battery with him, but my problem not solved!
I replaced it with the exact same brand/model that was in there to begin with. it is 1350mah
Once I can get it to turn on all the way again, i'm going to backup everything and try the hard reset.

[Q] Turn off data and keep MMS?

How can I do that?
You mean on your plan? or on your phone?
On my phone. Right now, I have a gophone sim in it, and I don't want it connecting to the internet as it keeps using up money everytime it does.
I think APNdroid has that option. The only problem is it won't always cut off data unless you go toggle airplane mode or reboot.
You need data to receive pictures.
Question is irrelevant.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well then bassahaulic, how can I make it to where data turns on ONLY for MMS?
I would like an answer for this as well. I don't want my data on all the time - it drains my battery. However, if someone sends me an MMS text while my data is off, I don't even get a notification. I don't even get the text once I turn data back on. I don't find that acceptable either.
Is there a workaround so that your data doesn't have to be on 100% of the time just on the possibility of receiving a MMS text?
Also - the same applies to when I'm on WIFI. I tested it out by having my wife send me one. On WIFI the phone screen turned on when the MMS text was sent (and I assume when I would've received it), but no notification. On 3G - I received the MMS Text.

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try and did what you suggested (ran it with data off and then rebooted) but once I turned data back on, it wouldn't go back off using the toggle . Man, that would've been awesome if it had worked.
Any other suggestions?
I found that "APN OnOff" by Curvefish works perfectly for what I was looking for - can turn data off and still get MMS texts. Now to actually download the picture I need to turn data back on, but at least I know it's there, and that makes all the difference.
Only draw back to it is that you have to go into flight mode for the switched settings to take affect. I'm okay with that little nuisance though. Much better than rebooting the phone.
Thanks for the suggestions. This is a great forum.
Why can't we just go into plane mode and keep WIFI on? AM I missing something? (Maybe I just asked a super dumb question)
In plane mode you can't receive calls or texts.

If you dont want to shut off phone all the time you can install this
Here's an app that will launch some of the codes(phone, service menu, gps etc) that you can use... like the 1st option with phone/battery/usage info that u can hit and just shut off the radio then turn it right back on..its a pain in the ass put hey it works..lol

APN changes can take effect if you toggle the airplane mode... ie:
hold the power button
turn it on (radio off)
hold the power button
turn it off (radio on)
Worked for me when I used to use APNdroid anyway.
Well I tried using APNOnOff. Thought it was working (using plane mode) but if I left data off for an extended amount of time I would need to restart the phone to get it going again.
If I used that code program, does it turn off all data or are you saying flipping that switch would make these APN toggles work without rebooting?
Why did you stop using APNdroid?

If you use that code thing you can turn on & off the radio so you dont need 2 reboot every time, thats what i did b4 i went 2 I9000XFJM6 Rom.
I dont use APNdroid because I had read different people giving issues with messing up there data, so I just have been using the toggle data.
Ok cool. Now at least I have a backup plan. My battery lasts SO MUCH LONGER with data "off". I went back to Toggle Data to give it a try with plane mode toggling. So far it's working great.
