Opinion on improvements to MDA Compact IV (diamond) - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I've got my girlfriend one of these. She's used to Windows Mobile, but is struggling with the TouchFLO interface. I think this is because it's a little sluggish.
I've removed the antivirus software which has sped it up a bit. I'd like to turn off the TouchFLO completely and go to the old Today menu to see how she gets on with it, but I can't find out how to turn it off.
Do people generally turn off TouchFLO or try to improve it?
You're opinions would be very helpful.
Thanks
Mike

I'd try one of the custom roms. After giving up in disgust on the T-Mobile ROM (eugh, pink AND slow) I've installed the 7.5 SwiftBL ROM and TouchFlo is MUCH more responsive (plus no longer pink). Maybe worth a try?

Agree with this, went the same way. As long as you have a little bit of technical knowledge you should be fine, but make sure you read the guides in detail first!

The T-Mobile ROM is rubbish - based on the initial version of the HTC ROM (version 1.37) which HTC have admitted is flawed and buggy and have since updated. T-Mobile, however, have so far chosen not to upgrade their version of the ROM (while all other providers have). Also, the anti-virus software they have included is a joke as there are no feasible viruses that can affect Windows Mobile (yet at any rate). You might as well uninstall it for the good it does.
I would concur with the other responses - if you have made the mistake of buying a Compact IV (and I believe it IS a mistake) then ditch the T-Mobile ROM in favour of a SwiftBlade or Dutty ROM and make sure you upgrade the radio as well (again, the T-Mobile included version is crap).
When I moved from T-Mobile to Orange to get my Diamond, T-Mobile claimed that the Compact IV was the Diamond and comparable to it - well, frankly it isn't and until they sort their act out, it won't be.

You really didn't look very hard did you?
Start->Settings->Today->Items tab; uncheck "TouchFLO 3D"

Thanks for everyone's views/opinions.

NewHTC 6.1 ROM : another reason to stop buying HTC !!!

Hello, I just would like to give a feedback of my usage of the last HTC 6.1 ROM.
The good thing :
- HTC Dialer is a lot faster than the 6.0 dialer (Thanks god !!!). But I guess I could use it with the old HTC 6.0 ROM.
The bad things :
- For IGO 8 to work I need to disable the "HTC Home", the "A-GPS" feature, and soft reset my device !!!! That means I won't use IGO 8 anymore, and that was my favorite GPS application.
- SPB Backup does not work anymore
- NO CAMERA IMPROVEMENT : still the same ****, slow and blurry.
- Performance issues with my SDHC card : all read/writes done from the Kaiser to the SDHC card are very very very slow.
- my device freezes all the time !!! I have to wait for 10-20 seconds before I can use it again. EDIT : since I stoped using "Quick Menu" this, problem disapeared ... So another usefull application I can't use anymore !
- performances are lower !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just talk about using the device, the way it displays the menus, the way applications come to the screen, it's really slower than the original HTC 6.0 ROM I had !!!!
So one more time, HTC shows how they deal with their customers :
"don't worry, we will make an update with performances improvements" ...
instead the performances have decreased, absolutly nothing have been improved, and I meet a lot of compatibility problems !!!!!!!
So think twice before installing this f***ing ROM !!!!
How can HTC put on the market such an unfinished/untested product ???!!!!
I just realized they just did the same with the Kaiser ...
Hi,downgrade to wm6 because my pda became crazy !
Same thing : my official microsd card with Nav and Go doesn't work, and the rest too.We must say a big thanks to HTC !!!
Please then, do not use the HTC Rom. We have a lot of Very Good Chefs that will make your problems go away. (If you ask them nicely0

Hi,
Did you pull off the microsd before upgrading ?(perhaps the upgrade process
corrupted the card)
Perhaps you could try (trial period) pocket mechanics pro(from wizzcode)
to reformat your sd+scandisk , it is a very reliable soft.
I had a worry to upgrade the official rom with vista, so i had to make the upgrade with a winxp desktop.
For time being, i found an improvement in the sound volume(phone usage)
and my bluetooth earpiece(nearly inaudible before).
Some softs are faster when launching(P.M.Pro for example) and sprite backup
(i upgraded from the light edition to the full one 6.22) works well under wm6.1.
But for the rotation screen when sliding the keyboard, i didnt notice any
progress.(i dont watch movies/videos on my kaiser, so unable to tell if it is better)
The only bad and good thing when upgrading:
i wasnt able to restore all my softs with my backup(some registry bugs)
so i had to reinstall all (tomtom6, sprite,netfront,pocket informant,etc)
boring but it has the advantage to start from fresh install.
One problem, windows mobile center(under vista) has some difficulties to
synchronize my kaiser.(i had to do some "menage" in my outlook 2002 appointments).
regards from France

I think that we must all realize that in this day and age of " give me more now" software development we have seen the last, long ago, of the finished, polished , stable software release. Look at Vista and Leopard and the such. Both operating systems were beseiged by bugs and incompatabilities. Vista is getting better but still crap.
We are going to have to get used to getting Beta versions of everything. Yes, HTC makes the bulk of their money off of hardware. As unacceptable as it might seem they are not going to spend millions in R and D and beta testing on upgrades they give away for free. Perhaps if we were willing to pay $100 or $200 or so for a software upgrade, like Vista or Leopard we would get a better finished product, or not. Everyone still got a beta of Vista.
My point is , this is it . We wanted it now. We wanted it free. We got the Beta. We tested it , it sucks ,give them the feed back and push for patches. Unacceptable ? Yes but, like the current gas prices, it is the reality of the situation.
Yes,i remove each time sim card and memory card before flashing.I think i'm not alone to have problems with french update ( cf french forum ) .I've downgraded with wm6 and everything works fine again .
reading through the frustrating experiences makes me feel better. so i am no alone. how absolutely unprofessional of htc. i hope palm comes out with its new OS quickly. my windows mobile adventure is eating up my time.
how can i downgrade again?
i need the original 6.0 Ger rom
Hi,
Sorry for the slight variation on topic, but I just logged into my HTC E-club and could not find the WM6.1 Update, am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks.
Same issues for me as you folks. I dumped it like the smelly crap it is and reloaded with dutty's hybrid. This one I'm diggin'.Very stable, awesome actually.

it seems most of your issues are compatibility with applications. shouldn't you be complaining to the developers about these? I'm sure they will fix those up to make them run smoothly with 6.1, I don't think it's fair to blame HTC for application incompatibility with a *new* OS.
maybe do an HR and see if you still have issues [except the driver issue because we all know they didn't fix that]
sometimes it's good to wait for apps/devs to catch up before updating to ensure that your apps a working well with your new OS.
just my 2 cents. peace
Guys, a little help please...
I need to downgrade to WM6.0.
Where can I get the official Portuguese ROM for KAISER???
Thanks in advance
here's a fix for the freezes:

I disagree with what you say. Most of the Windows Mobile 5.0 applications were working on the WM 6.0. I never loosed so many applications (and I didn't try all of them yet) with an update which is not supposed to be a major update (6.0 to 6.1).
My biggest issue is the IGO 8 application which does not work because of an HTC application : HTC Home.
So now, if I want to run IGO 8, I must disable some tabs of HTC Home (contacts, weather, music ...) which were essential to me.
When I bought my Kaiser, I also bought HTC home which I cannot use now.
I also noticed that since I installed 6.1, HTC home does slow down my device and is responsible for some freezes of it. If I remove HTC home from the today screen, no freezes !
So this is definitly an HTC problem !
Firstly, this is not an HTC problem. It is a Windows Mobile (Microsoft) problem.
Every device is different.
What works well on mine, might not work on yours for obvious reasons.
Folks are quick to criticise HTC because they don't know any better or don't understand the problem.
Why "upgrade" to wm 6.1? wm 6.0 works perfectly well.
And btw, Vista is NOT crap. I have been using Vista Business for over a year now without problems. You really just need to figure things out.
Don't fix it if it aint broke.
Guys thanks a lot!! I intended to upgrade to the official ROM, but now I stay with Dutty's.
It saves me a lot of time.

1) "HTC Home" IS an HTC product... And it is the source of a lot of problems in the 6.1 ROM (just read what I wrote).
2) Why upgrading to 6.1 : because HTC said the performances will be increased. And the performances where an issue in 6.0 (and still are in 6.1).
I waited for an upgrade, seems like I got an downgrade. Device with this big price tag should perform well out of the box.
This is what i think.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395110
allright... I've done downgrading to latest wwe 6.0.
6.1 is a real crap- do not let some ppl fool You- there is no speed gain at all.
what more, it's slower than ever.
simple tests: I have opened a web page in opera mini on both 6.0 (stock t-mob and latest wwe) and 6.1 (stock wwe, plk and leo's diamond v2) and guess what- on 6.0 scrolling is smooth on 6.1 visible screen tearing occurs.
second test was 3 minutes of doom2 e1m1- again, visible and annoying screen tearing on 6.1. no fps gained at all.
the other thing is that 6.1 doesn't support card export II and have many other more or less irritating bugs.
I am seriously considering swapping my Vario III for N95 8GB, but still hesitating. with tweaked 6.0 it is a quite nice machine, qwerty keyboard is a big + aswell... I dunno. I shall see...
anyway- br and good luck to all with their devices.
bro
Just chiming in with my $0.02 worth, that the 6.1 upgrade works fine for me. I'm only running very minimal 3rd party apps (aside from TomTom), so compatibility hasn't been a problem for me.
The RF quality of the phone seems much-improved, I don't notice (without benchmarking tools) a big perceptible speed difference from a user's point of view.

MDA C4 - Stock Rom problems - time to flash?

Just got the diamond on t-mobile currently:
ROM : 1.37.110.3 WWE
Radio: 1.00.25.03
Prot: 52.26a.25.09U
Id love to get after this stock before flashing with anything else so I can put it back if I need to!
So heres what Ive done so far and whats not great.
Added the manilla black .cabs (why did they boof it all by doing it in pink in the first place!)
Added the missed calls touchflo tab.
A few reg hacks as from this forum - not all.
So far:
- Struggles to connect back up (browser) to 3G after using my wireless connection.
- Sometimes loses the connectio to the network completey and cant reconnect with t-mobile without power down/up
- Start bar dissapears sometimes and needs power down/power up to get it back.
- touch flow is slow sometimes....annoying slow.
- dont get my favourites added to the browser touch flo menu?
Im still getting my head around WM6.1...so other annoyances:
- When I click on a test message in touch flo it goes straight into reply and also with threading....Ive seen the reg edit to diable threading but can you force it to just open the sms from the touch flow screen or does it have to drop straight into reply.
Ive been reading around here for a few days and although I didnt want to flash the beast yet....Im kind of fed up enough to either flash it or send it back. I like some aspects of it...the soft qwerty is ok but leaves you with little room to see anything else and its defo slower that normal keypad.
So Id love to here from people who have had this stock and since flashed something else and would like to tell me how great the phone is now.
Im not so fussed about the t-mobile branding of the browser but it would be nice to be able to get just to opera from the touchflo tab and also my startpage rather than theres..
Ive searched and read a lot - Im after anyone who has seen any of this and also recomendations of fixes including..'flash this it will make you want to keep the puppy'
Its almost brilliant.
I know replying takes time so I appreciate anyone who cares to share with me. Great forum.

I'd say flash it! I had the same device and it seemed slow and buggy to me. I contemplated sending it back and going to the iPhone, but I bit the bullet and flashed Swiftblades ROM. The difference is amazing, everything seems to run that bit smoother and TF3D is now usable. It is a pain having to tweak the device so it fits your needs for some people, but for me that's half the fun!
I've put loads of tweaks and apps on, some good, some not so, and it may be time for a hard reset. What the hell, I may even flash a newer ROM! (Once you've done it once, there'll be no stopping you.... it is nerve wracking the first time mind )

Did you manage to get hold of the stock ROM so if it doesnt look good then you can return it back to how it was?
I assume swiftblades rom has the manilla black and all the original HTC diamond touchflo features like youtube and the web browser debranding (i.e. loading opera without all the t-mobile favourite rubbish). Does it also have the favourites from the browser on the t-phone internet tab?
I was also on this ROM when i got my T-Mobile C4 and i can say that even with tweaks it was so awfully slow i was worried that it would continue to be this slow. I finally updated the ROM to Panosha 1.7 (very very very fast & has all the features you need, including t-mobile internet settings) and updated to the .05 ROM which definately improves my 3g & gprs.
In terms of getting the new T-Mobile stock rom, i haven't seen it been published yet but i can imagine it will get dumped and uploaded here very soon as T-Mobile have their Compact IV's back in stock so it's just a matter of time before someone get's hold of one
In terms of bugs and memory leaks in Panosha, there seems to be very few like all the other ROMs and i would say if you're gonna to change to an unsigned ROM, go to this one or Dutty's, because they are pretty much the same!
Hope this helps a little bit, any more questions then just ask

Thanks for the info :O) I was actually thinking about getting hold of the current stock rom 1.37.110.3 WWE to revert back if I have some probs. Ive seen today that someone has posted a link and orange have released 1.93.x.x from HTC. Im a bit nervous about flashing but Ive looked at a lot of the guides and read them over...do you just have to flash the rom and radio?
..thenm after hard reset you get a pucker manilla phone minus all you own apps/settings/messages etc.?
yep, just make sure you flash Hard SPL first, searhc around for a program called PimBackup if you want to backup all your contacts/calls/messages etc though message threading doesn't save but that's no biggie!

Im guessing you dont have a copy of t-mobile stock rom? Im just thinking that should this phone break at some point then without the stock rom then the warranty is probably invalid.....funny because I can find every other stock apart from the t-mobile one Ive got....
I didn't have a copy of the stock ROM, I just went for it. Someone else on the forum reckoned the first thing that happened when it gets sent back is the flash the latest ROM anyway.... it was good enough for me!
The HardSPL means you are unlikely to brick the phone though a dodgy ROM install, so if that goes on OK, you're laughing
I didn't have a copy of the rom at the time, however there are copies at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406327
This is my backup just incase it needs to go back
So...T-Mobile reckon they have a ROM update that will be released 'within the next 2 weeks' according to the support guy I spoke to last night....probably be a 1.93.x.x variant I suppose.
Thats great news....
Only trouble is, they are renowned for all talking utter ****e!

Yep. However orange have just released 1.93.x.x and from the discussion I had they have a lot of unhappy cmpct4 owners and its a flagship handset for them.
They could do them selves a favour and de-brand for us and save themselves some time as well. Id love to know what the guys that decided to do a white and pink TF3D are getting paid to come up with that idea...muppets.

T-Mobile MDA IV - Further impressions

Dear All,
Ok, I thought I'd continue my short story of life so far with the Diamond..
I've had it two weeks just over two weeks now and I'm beginning to get used to it. Those of you who read my first post will know that one of the first things I did was update the ROM away from the T-Mobile "Pink-O-Matic" version of the ROM.
I downloaded and installed SWIFTBL Version 7.0 ROM. I also initially installed the 08 Radio but when the BS14 Version came to light, I trailled that. I currently still run it too.
Rom Updates:
Recently, I did update to SWLFTBL's 7.5 ROM but, and I'm not too sure why, the Diamond felt more sluggish. Battery life appeared to decrease too. I noticed that ActiveSync stayed live all the time and put it down to that.. Instead of searching the forum for the ActiveSync Killer, I decided to downgrade the ROM to the Version 7.0.. Afterall, if it's not broke, don't fix it..
Interestingly, after reading about AZTOR's ROMS, I installed his Version 7 WWE but again, I just felt that SWIFT's version 7.0 appeared best suited to me. I'm not really able to put my finger on it though. (Sorry AZTOR )..
AZTOR is an exceptional ROM Developer and his work deserves a lot of recognition on here. I'm keeping a close eye on his partnership with Swtos and the forth-coming ROMS that they're developing as I'm sure their ROMS will be the way I do eventually go
General Use:
I have to admit that the Diamond is not used much during an everage Day. When it is, it's more as a phone then a PPC.
The reason for this is that the position I hold at work requires me to have a Company Phone. Therefore whilst I am at work (such as now - Yeah, busy huh..?) the Company Mobile has to be used and further, the Company in question uses Lotus Notes, so I have to use a Palm Pilot for my Calendar, etc. WM6 & Lotus Notes, do not get along well together!
It's when I leave the office that the Diamond is used. I forward the Company Mobile to it. I'm also still fiddling a bit with it. I'm learning to install themes - Some successfully and some not. Still, it's a learning curve!
Customising:
I currently find that the Diamond is a lot harder to customise compared to my old MDAIII (Blue Angel). Simple things like installing a Theme are met with, so far, lots of non-occurrances. This is a little frustrating but I'm sure it's something I will pick upon - It's probably me doing something wrong! Still, at least I have the ringtone I want!
The Future
Next steps involve installing Tomtom on to it to assess it's capabilities. I'll have to get a Mount for the Phone first. I'll be ordering my Brodit holder next week. Once that's installed in the car I'll obtain a copy of Tomtom to see how it feels..
Anyhow, it's it for me for the minute..
Hope everyone's well..?
Hi MrPhilly,
I ended up on Swift's 7.5 ROM, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm running the lite version, 12Mb pp, not sure which one you went for?
On TomTom, I've been running V6 on various devices - Diamond, Kaiser and Trinity. So far it's worked pretty well on all of them, and no real difference on the Diamond apart from the better screen resolution, which seems to work well.
I would be interested to know if your Brodit holder allows you to place the phone in landscape mode in the car - I believe this would make TomTom better, so please update us once you have it!

Hi mate,
yes, I was thinking the same. The Brodit holders are robustly made and feature a tight fit in the sides of the phone. The one I was using for my old Nokia was excellent but more so relied on gravity to ensure the phone didn't "pop" out of the holder.
From what I've seen so far, it looks like you could put the Diamond into Landscape mode however I'm not too sure how the Diamond would cope with "the lack of gravity" holding it in place.. If that makes sense..? hehe
Cheers.

Annoying sluggish behaviour - T-Mobile MDA Vario III

I have a T-Mobile UK, MDA Vario III and have to say for me personally this is the best "all-rounder" of the MDA Vario phones I've had so far. I also use phoneAlarm v2.10 (latest) to assist in making profiles on the phone easier to switch between.... one gripe though (and I don't know WHY this happens)...
I'm in the middle of writing a text, or even generally using the phone, and it decides to just stop working for about 5 seconds. All screen and keyboard response just stops! Then it kicks back in again. Very annoying!
Does anyone else have this problem, seen it, or even better still, do they have a fix for this? By the way am also using the default WM6 Pro CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2) that came with it from T-Mobile UK.
yeah i have a fix for your problem, which i suffered from too when i had a mda vario III: flash a new rom!
i am currently running duttys wm6 dualtouch v4 and it is so much better than the t-mobile rom. it has fixed so many issues that i had just taken for granted a permanent problems. Trust me it is like buying a newer better phone, but for free!

Really? Sounds good. Let me see where I can get this from and see the issues. Are there any issue with duttys though? (he says being the old sceptic).
And most importantly what's the battery life like? I got rid of "HTC Home" which chomped battery power like crazy, even using just GSM and not HSDPA.
There were no big issues for me. One thing I did have a problem with was I didn't hard reset the device after flashing the new ROM. This caused a few problems. Once I had done this they went away. The device is alot quicker. One issue I have found is that I can't change the cube icons. A little gripe but no other problems with this ROM otherwise.
Hi bennyb0y,
I had the same problem on this machine. I eventually tracked down my problem to the BBC 24 custom template I was using with Spb Traveler for weather - it was using most of the cpu time! Solution - use another template.
Regards,
Paul
I had the same problem with my vario III and the best thing I've done to date with it was to update to Sleuths ROM. It's damn fast, not buggy, doesn't crash, has all the features you could want and the best thing is, it was so simple to do. Just read the wiki to unlock etc, then follow Sleuths easy instructions. The ROM is called someting like "so many ROMS so little time" V3.0 (or somthing like that).
It does what it says on the tin.

[Q] Quick Tilt 2 Energy Rom question - Same as Touch Pro 2?

Forgive my ignorance on this, because I know this must have been asked a dozen different times, but I don't see it anywhere. I'm using an AT&T Tilt 2, and I'm looking at EnergyRoms.com, and I'm seeing a "Touch Pro 2 Cookie" option and a "Touch Pro 2 CDMA" option. I'm not seeing a Tilt 2 option, but would the "Touch Pro 2 Cookie" option work for me?
I'd hate to flash my phone and find that AT&T suddenly thinks I have a Sprint phone or something, lol. I'm pretty ignorant as to how that stuff works; I just know that Tilt 2 and Touch Pro 2 are the same model, Rhodium, on different Networks.
And it is "Cookie" that I want, right? Not CDMA?
My Tilt 2 was dropped on a hardwood floor (rest assured, the dropper has been banished from holding my phone for eternity), and when the replacement came today, I found, much to my dismay, that HTC had updated the Sense UI and moved stuff around. So, I figure, if I'm going to have to get used to a new interface, I might as well go with a better one, and everyone seems to say that Energy ROMs are very stable and fast.
Thanks!
Tilt2 = AT&T's rename for the Rhodium
Cookies = Cookie Home Tab... which is a mod for the sense... I believe.
You're on the right track sir.
Good luck.
Thanks... It's a little more intimidating than I thought it would be, lol, but I think I'm still going to go ahead and try it out.
As a fellow Tilt 2 user I share your concerns. I was a little "iffy" about the whole rom thing. The Tilt 2 is in fact the HTC Rhodium. The thing you have to be weary of is any ROM written for another version (e.g. Touch Pro 2) will come set up for their individual keyboard setup. An easy fix is downloading a key re-mapper cab.
Energy Roms however come complete with a setup process labeled as "Carrier Provisioning" which automatically fixes the key mapping as well as the AT&T 600k MMS set-up.
I have been flashing Energy Roms since '09 and any time I've strayed I've always ended up coming back. Just make sure you are using Touch Pro 2 GSM (be it Cookie or other flavor) and NOT the CDMA version. Looks like you are on the right track though just be mindful to the details and you should be on your way ROM flashing Heaven.. =]
Good Luck and happy Flashing..
Tilt2 user here - have tried many custom roms these last days, I ended up flashing Energy rom on my phone and it is working really great. The Ram fills up rapidly but this does not seem to affect much the phone, some small lags(very rare) but nothing bad.Using it for 5 days now, phone froze only 7 times compared to some other roms which hangs more than this.
Overall,I think this is a very usable rom and I am going to stick with it for the moment.
I have a tilt2 also and I was in the same boat as you at first but I have flashed many many times! Energy roms are def some of the best imo. Just follow all the steps in the many write ups and you'll be fine! Wellll maybe not when you get addicted to flashing...lol

Haha, that's a good way to put it. I did get the standard Energy Rom flashed, and I've already stopped using Sense because of the memory it takes up (more than the old TouchFlo3d? I know they're basically the same, but it seems like this more recent stock rom with the updated Sense/Touchflo is slower than the original, but maybe it's my imagination, lol). So I'm beginning to wonder if I should switch to the Titanium one, but right now I figure since I don't have it on it only affects storage memory not program memory, and I've got an sd card so I'm not too concerned about it. Anyway, just pointing out that you're right... Flashing roms can be addictive, lol.
