Aaaaaargh!!! $£(% ActiveSync! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi folks,
Just having a problem that's really winding me up... I really hope some kind soul can help...
OK, I have a laptop running WinXP Pro and ActiveSync 4.5
I have a Kaiser (T-Mob VIII) running the shipped ROM...
Everything has been working fine for months, ActiveSync (never used it to Sync items with the PC, purely to explore the device and move files around etc), and Internet Sharing worked without any problems...
Anyway, I'm just visiting my folks and my Dad's been having a nightmare with his Nav Cam 7700 Sat Nav unit. Basically support for the device has folded and we've lost faith. I did some reading and it turns out you can 'tweak' it to run TomTom...
So, I connected his Sat Nav to my laptop (it runs CE Core 5.0), and used Mobile Registry Editor to adjust its 'init' values to kick-up explorer rather than the (terrible) preloaded Sat-Nav software... Everything went fine, we've now got his gadget working fine and all the problems he had with the terrible software it ran previously are solved
The only issue I'm having now though, is that my laptop completely refuses to connect to my Kaiser... The system-tray icon turns green and 'spins around' for a while when I connect it, but after a while it throws up the 'troubleshooting' tool because it can't connect. Needless to say, that doesn't help solve the problem.
I've un-installed and re-installed ActiveSync, checked all the old Application Data folders, DLLs and INFs are gone (removing some by hand where necessary), and I've been through the registry on my laptop to make sure none of ActiveSync stays behind...
The problem is exactly the same
I've even tried connecting my work phone to the laptop - that's a Hermes running a HTC WM6 ROM - it behaves exactly the same as the Kaiser...
Hard-Reset of the Kaiser and changing its device name didn't help either.
...The [email protected] sat nav unit still connects fine though! £%^$)%!!!!!!!!
I'd be sooooooooo grateful for any thoughts people have, as this is driving me nuts now - I really don't want to have to reformat and reinstall my laptop just to get AS working...
Thanks,
Rob.

Bro, I'm having a big problem with the mini USB plug.... when you plug the cable to your device, does it shake or it's very stable?

The plug seems pretty stable...
I guess it can be 'wiggled' a little, but nothing that gives me cause for concern - it seems as 'tight' as the connection on the Hermes I have with me (and two more that are back home)...
I was wondering about cabling/connections for a while, but I tried Internet Sharing too, that still works fine - so there's a solid-enough connection between the laptop and the PDA - it's just that ActiveSync isn't playing ball :s
Thanks,
Rob.

Try this...on you phone go to start...settings...connections..usb to pc and uncheck enable advanced network functionality. See if it works then.

jhernand1102 - you have got to be on the shortlist for the position of 'The Font of All Knowledge'... Based on your reply I should probably now be asking 'Why are we here?' or 'What's it all about?'
That worked (in case you hadn't guessed by the paragraph above! )...
I'm confused though...
1) Why did it work with the option enabled before, but not now...
2) What have I actually turned-off? The geek in me will be a little upset thinking about 'Advanced' functionaility that was previously enabled but now isn't...
Thanks
Rob.

You are not missing anything by disabling the advanced network functionality. As a matter of fact, the USB2PC application that runs on the Diamond and Touch Pro actually advises you onscreen that you should disable it if you have connection issues.

Yeah, when I went in there I saw it was the same on my Kaiser (duh!!! - silly me!)
The thing is though, I couldn't understand why it worked with it set before, but all of a sudden didn't want to.
That caused me to do some more reading...
So with that option enabled, Sync is handled via an RNDIS gateway, with it disabled, it's basic serial-over-USB. So, for basic things, disabled is fine; but for more unusual network communication configs involved in your ActiveSync, it might be better to have the advanced network functionality enabled...
I could probably manage with the serial-over-USB method, but I would a) like to know I can use RNDIS gateway should the need present itself, and b) as a bit of a geek, I'm not happy with something all of a sudden refusing to work - especially if it's an aspect of 'functionality' to some degree...
So thinking about RNDIS not working, I started messing about with Windows, and my Firewall...
I'd already set ActiveSync (all three main executables) as trusted apps in my Firewall config, and made sure that the ports required by it were open to everything inside my internet gateway.
I made sure that Windows Firewall (lol) was disabled...
I tried with my firewall 'disabled' - running, but allowing all traffic... Still no Sync...
So, god only knows why, I just quit my Firewall app, removing it from memory...
ActiveSync worked!
I re-started my Firewall, and made NO CHANGES WHATSOEVER to its configuration...
ActiveSync still worked!
...So, it's all working again - and in effect, nothing's changed.
I'd still really love to know how connecting the Win CE Core 5.0 device knocked out sync for anything which wanted to use RNDIS... I guess I might never find out... If anyone has any good theories, I'd be interested to hear, but I am prepared to cut my losses now it's working - Never look a gift horse in the mouth!
Thanks again for all your input folks,
Rob.

PC's WIFI going to pot when Kaiser is connected

Hi all,
Has anyone had/seen this problem? Whenever I connect my TYTN II (Vodafone v1615) to my laptop (Sony VGN-BX197XP) runnig XP sp2 the laptop's WIFI connection drops. It then keeps dropping out and coming back even AFTER I've disconnected the device - I have to reboot to get it sensible again.
As you can imagine, this is a little inconvenient!
Can anyone help?

Sounds like the same symptoms that some people were getting with Activesync 4.5 on some machines a year ago - I thought it had been solved by now - never bit me, but my wife had terrible problems with a Vario 1 and her Sony Vaio. Have a look under "Settings->Connections->USB" - is there a check box somewhere around there to turn off "advanced" functionality? If so, do it and see if that fixes it. Microsoft added the option of a sort of IP tunnel through Activesync which really seemed to screw some WiFi chip sets,,,

Unfortunately I can't see any similar function but your pointer towards active sync seems to be right. When I uninstalled Active Sync and plugged the device in, it was fine. I installed it and as soon as it synced, the wireless dropped out. Most infuriating!
It's not any odd software I've installed either as, due to another issue, I had to hard-reset it and watch it reset itself to defaults and I was only connecting it so that I could drop the backup software on so that I could restore my backup... The device was effectively quite virginal at the time.
I recall this being an issue with the wireless card drivers rather than AS. Are you up to date on those?

It's nothing that you did - it was a serious compatibility problem between ActiveSync 4.5 and some PC WiFi chip sets - including those used in many Vaios. I checked on my Vario III after my original posting and the setting is still there under "Settings->Connections->USB to PC" and its called "Enable advanced network functionality". If you turn that off, I think it may solve your problem. I'm not sure exactly what functionality you will loose, but basic synchronisation will still work...

Problems Syncing AT&T Tilt in Vista Ultimate x64 with either WMDC 6.0 or 6.1.

Hi all,
I'm usually able to solve problems like this myself, but after trying:
1.Fresh install of vista Ultimate x64
2.WMDC 6.0
3.WMDC 6.1
4.WMDC on AT&T provided Disc
5.Hard reset of tilt
6.Many Many restarts
7.Checking and unchecking the "enable advanced network functionality" In the USB to PC settings.
8.Reading every forum and troubleshooting guide I could find on the net even remotely related.
9.Uninstalling or disabling all firewalls and or virus protection.
I thought maybe just this once I'd actually just ask.
Strangest thing... it actually worked for a while, so I can't for the life of me figure why the clean install didn't work.
Description of problem is as follows:
Device goes through the motions and declares a connection most of the time. PC on the other hand installs either htc usb sync driver under Mobile Devices or Microsoft remote mobile device driver under networking depending on the whether the "enable advanced network functionality" box is checked or not, but does not install both drivers which I have read on some forums it should.
WMDC looks as though it's going to connect but usually hang at splash screen and if I start it manually it says "not connected" or occasionally a big X with ERROR and nothing else.
My current solution is not ideal. I am running a virtual machine with XP loading inside vista with activesync 4.5 and and outlook installed just so I can sync my phone...lol. Slightly less annoying than dual booting, but still seems a ridiculous thing to have to do.
So, anyone have a link to a magical forum that I missed or anything like that?
I am running Rom version 1.62.502.00 with Radio version 1.27.14.09 if that helps.
Hope others are having an easier time of this

Update: For whatever reason with no changes the phone and computer have apparently decided to cooperate again, and I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Thank you for seeing if you could help though. It was actually quite frustrating. Hope everyone's having an awesome time playing with their Kaisers

Usb connection doesn't work propwerly, with apprently no reason

Hi guys,i used my Diamond as a modem yesterday, and it worked fine.
In the afternoon,it wasn't recognized anymore if i left "enable advanced network functions" activated, and it doesn't ask me which kind of connection i want to use, even if i uncheck that box...i always have to set the connection type from Start->setting->connections->Usb...
How could i solve this double problem?
I already reinstalled activesync on my pc,should i do on Diamond too?if so,where could i find the cab?
Obviously the phone and the usb were in the same conditions as in the morning
Thanks for help,it's a really annoying problem
It might be worth trying it without 'enhanced functions' enabled as this can sometimes cause troubles. Also ensure Activesync is not running on the phone.
I know these were not the same conditions you had when previously working, however a connection of this nature can sometimes be a bit flaky and rejigging things is always worth a shot.

Activesync Problem! Help!

Hi I have a fault with Activesync (Vista), I connect the USB cable to the PC and to the handset, the power indicator tells me that it's charging yet, the device is not syncronizing.
I have reset both the PC and the Device with no avail.
It was working OK about a week ago now nothing, I have not altered any settings and im running HYPERDRAGON III with radio 1.65.24.36 any suggestions???
You are required to search before posting, and seeing as this is a common problem I don't think you have met the requirements.
This is sort of an "advanced" users forum. If you don't search first, you won't get much help on here. Look at the top right, see the "search" click it, type in something and it should help you out. This is a very common problem, asked and answered many times.
I'll take a moment and try to help. It's just as easy as telling you to search.
I found a thread or two (the search is really time consuming. I don't find it to work all that great...find too much stuff unrealted to what you need). And they didn't help.
What I am only just not realizing is that it seems that the firewall with the Virus software may be interferring. If I turn off the firewall long enough to synch, it works.
What a pain, but that's what's working for me.
Never had this problem on XP.
Chillin like a Dylan
Thanks for the support and advice. I have followed instructions yet problem still pesists.
I have disabled firewall and Anti-Virus to no avail. When connecting the USB cable usually I hear a notification that the device is attached but this doesn't happen. Very puzzling!
Awesome problem solved. Reinstalled Wdinows Mobile Centre and all works ok now. Im not sure if this has any similarity but I know there was a Vista update the other day which may of interfered with the device drivers. Not sure.
But all is working well!
It'll be interesting to see if it keeps working well. INstalling WMDC was my first attempt at fixing. It appeared to fix, but the next time I went to synch, it didn't work again.
I spent the next 2-3 weeks reinstalling WMDC every tiem I wanted to sync, and it would sync.
I remain only able to do it if I disable my firewall (or reinstall WDMC, which I'm tired of). Of course, that could be vendor specific problem. I am using Trend Micro on my PC.
Nope issue still reminas, I'm pretty sure its the connectors in the Mini USB, on reading other forums I have discovered that the Mini USB port has been known to malfunction. This is due to the design of the port and the fact the cables shipped with the device are standard and not customised for the device.
I just wiggle around the socket a few times and hey it works (fingers crossed). Might justbrick it and order a replacment that will work if I can't sync any more.
I have also noticed that you have to wait after a soft reset for all of the programs to fully load. ESPECIALLY if you use BB Connect.
I believe this to be the true reason why rebooting a PC sometimes helps... it gives the Kaiser enough time to fully start.
instead of reinstalling WMDC, just make sure the service required to connect your device to your computer is running.
I believe its called windows mobile based connectivity. You wont be able to connect with that on manual. Switch it to automatic, as it sometimes likes to switch back to manual especially after a ROM flash.

usbtool won't do it anymore =/

Hey guys,
I received my Shift today and l liberated it. Usbtool worked for a couple of times, now it won't do it anymore. I searched the whole board up and down but i could not find an useful answer.
Anyone got an idea?
Thanks so far!

Some things that may make it work:
1. Try disconnecting your Shift from the 3G/2G network (this is best done in Vista and WINMO). In effect, you can only recieve SMS in this mode and no internet.
2. If the above does not work, try turning your Modem off (in Vista or WinMo, does not really matter) prior to using the USB.
3. Try above and increase Vista power setting to High Performance
4. Try 2 and 3 and have the Shift plugged into the wall.
The big issue is that the Modem (3G connectivity) is great, but shares the same "USB" connection that the USB Tool will use to connect to the Shift. As such, they two do not play nice. When in a 3G area, I always turn the modem off before synching the WinMo side with Vista. Since I normally only synch once or twice a day, this is not a problem for me.
Have fun!
Hey,
okay I tried your hints. I even reinstalled Windowsmobile and did the HardSPL thingy again. But the same problem: It won't work anymore. I guess it's a Vista Bug, I'll try system recovery if I've got some time to do so...
Try it while vista is connected to a wifi network, I find this works best.
it seems that this is an old problem. You can try go to the winmo's Settings->Connections->USB to PC, uncheck the "enable advanced network".
Then try sync again. However, I have found this created another problem, the winmo will hangup occasionally.
To solve this problem, you need to go back and check "enable advanced network". The best way is unchecked to sync, checked after you finish the sync.
