Has anybody checked out Microsoft's new mobile site? while working through the various menu options/links... keep an eye on what the programs LOOK like. Outlook, Contacts, Excel, Word, etc all LOOK different to WM6!
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/startdoingmore/
I'm guessing this website is based upon WM6.1 ?? Just an idea
Click Start > See the Experience > Stay More Connected and a Kaiser pops up. Its also under the phones section.
Yeah I noticed that!! I wonder why don't they have it listed on the main screen of phones though! oops!!! I take that back! just needed to drag the scroll bar to the right Glen... doh!!
Wow that looks fab. Either it's just fake mockups or it's Photon (windows mobile 7).
Taken from microsoft-watch.com regarding the WM roadmap:
Microsoft is working to deliver Photon, the successor to Crossbow, to cell phone and PDA providers by Q4 2007, and launch it officially in the first or second calendar quarter of 2008, according to slides from a Microsoft official's March TechDays presentation. Photon will include a "new flexible shell, modular containers and the 'Yamazaki' Windows CE kernel," according to information on the slides.

To be fair, MS need to pull their finger out... although I'd NEVER buy an iPhone, I have to admit my eyes starting watering when I played with it the other day - the OS is beautiful!

What the hell is a Yamazaki?
Apparently Windows CE versions from 4.0 onwards are named after whiskeys... and apparently Yamazaki is a whiskey... don't ask me!
CE 6 (Yamazaki)
And Wikipedia has only a small amount of information on Photon:
Windows Mobile
Microsoft is currently working on an upgrade to the Windows Mobile platform codenamed Photon that will be powered by Windows Embedded CE 6.0. Leaked videos of devices running the software show a new graphical interface. The software would merge both Smartphone and Pocket PC versions in one Windows Mobile version - the new interface optimized for both direct touch and button-based interaction, reducing stylus use. Microsoft Photon has been in development since the release of Windows Mobile 5 and is scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.

Here's to hoping for a free upgrade
I'm sure the ROM cookers on here will make a "free" upgrade ;-)
There is a webcast of Windows CE 6.0 R2 launch this friday morning... although its mainly for the developers, it will still be interesting to see whats truly new in CE that WM will be able to make use of.

Windows Mobile 6.1 will be formally released next week Looks official!!
Tuesday Pocket Lint reported ( http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/13612/14636/windows-mobile-61-coming-april.phtml) that Microsoft is ready publish the latest version of Windows Mobile, time will be next week Tuesday. The Microsoft Windows Mobile team member in charge "Robbie Bach" had earlier mentioned this at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas during a keynote speech. Windows Mobile 6.1 will be the last version 6.0 release of the first major update. Earlier this year the title leaked out (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/gallery/handsets/windows-mobile-61/) showing that 6.1 might use a smoother interface than the 6.0 interface, but it is unclear if that is a smart phone only or will be related to EM Pro devices also.
Windows Mobile 6.1 is supposed to increase on the basics of improvements much like the WM5 to WM6 transition.
Next year, Microsoft is expected to follow the script Mac OS X, introduced a with a new touch-screen user interface for the Windows Mobile 7. ( http://209.85.135.104/translate_c?h...a.cn/+&hl=en&safe=off&rls=com.microsoft:en-us )
Finally I need to point out that next Tuesday is April Fool's Day, but this is only a coincidence I hope.
See the above links for the Details from MS blogs.
LOOKS official... that is a UK website. is there any news of 6.1 being released in the US? what meger searching i did proved fruitless and i was just wondering if anyone has seen nething about it
should say "released to oems" not you and me
as per the way microsoft rolls out "updates" to windows mobile, device manufacturers are responsible for porting and making updates available per device. availability is usually sorted
digit
i know this is a stupid question....im am new to this, and this is my first windows mobile phone. I have the tilt and I know its running WM6.0, is it going to be available to download for us? for free? sorry for the noob question

go to the kaiser rom development and read the wiki and yes is the answer in simple terms
yea 6.1 will be free because its a minor update only... WM7 will not be free but it doesnt release until later next year... Also, 6.1 is available in parts in some of the roms on this site... Its not worth it unless ur a fan of threaded SMS... it has nothing so important to upgrade...
I am just waiting for pointUI to come out with version 2.0

pointUI will definitly be great but as long as you end up in the "classic" applications behind I find the finger-controls more or less worthless. Therefore I really look forward to WM7. This could be a really revolutionary WM release.
Windows Mobile 6.5 which is due out in the 4th quarter of this year will be available to some WM 6.0 and WM 6.1 phones. Sure hope htc gets on the band wagon and upgrades our Kaisers. (Doubtful though).

It's already been announced by MS that there will be no upgrades to WM6.5 for current phones.
Anyway, there are a few decent WM6.5 roms out in the ROM Dev forum...
im using wm 6.5 and i dont like it. too much bug and very slow. stick to wm 6.1 unless wm 7 comes out.
My hope, a cooked WM6.5 liked original config. has (icons, feature, applications) and they are working well
If it's a lite version, then just be as original graphics has..
Ah, it's just a dream..
6.5 isnt that great.

Actually according to this post at engadget mobile, in the last paragraph, it says that Microsoft will now, at the discretion of the device manufacturer, provide a 6.5 upgrade to any device with at least a 400MHz processor and 128MB ram. I still doubt that we'll get an official upgrade since HTC wants us to buy new phones from them. Here's the text for anybody who's interested:
Finally, Microsoft's issued a clarification regarding upgrades from 6.1 to 6.5: devices that are already out in the marketplace with a minimum of 128MB of RAM and a 400MHz processor or better are theoretically capable of being upgraded -- it's all up to licensees to decide whether they want to go to the trouble of offering the upgrades to their customers

Here's Pocketnow.com's interpretation:
According to Engadget Mobile, Microsoft is amending its upgrade policy for Windows Mobile 6.5. The company is now stating that if you own a Windows Mobile 6.1 device with at least a 400 MHz and 128 MB of RAM, it is up to the device maker to offer an upgrade path or force you to buy new hardware. Can we see a Touch Fuze on AT&T with Windows Mobile 6.5? The "Home" button instead of the "Start" button that was previously required for Windows Mobile 6.5 will surely save some people a few hundred on new hardware.

I am pretty sure that is the way it went from 6.0 to 6.1. HTC said yes to some models and no to others. MS doesn't care who replaces one phone with another newer one, they sell a license either way.
Does anyone know when will MS launch this version of OS ? Really would like to test on it or see how does it looks like..
If I understood it right, is the OS still under development. So you will probably not see much from it untill next year.. I guess
jea in half 2010 is release... win7 mobile vs iphone
it will be f**king good
Microsoft will start sending builds to OEMs to begin testing in Q1 2010. WM7 will be released in Q3 2010. I expect to see builds out sometime in Q1....however, I'm not too sure these builds will run on anything presently out besides the HTC HD2 because the CE kernel would have been recompiled for ARMv7 cores.
and that will be great. what is coming out from iphone next year to fightfwith android 2.0 and winmo7 ... and ppl will start porting their hd2 to android 2.0 and then to winmo7... lol
In the first place X1 probably can't support WM7
doesnt the 6.5.1 need to be released first?

Thought I read somewhere b4 that WM7 would require a motion sensor, which X1 doesn't have. But well, I could be wrong.

It's a very technical requirement.
The Windows CE kernel, very integral part of Windows Mobile, is being compiled for ARMv7 for Windows Mobile 7 (thought to be based on CE6.0 or CE7.0). Currently Windows Mobile 6/6.1/6.5, the CE (CE 5.X) kernel is compiled for ARMv6 which runs on many chipsets today (Qualcomm 720X for example).
ARMv7 architectures (ie. Snapdragon, Cortex A8, NVIDIA Tegra) are backwards compatible with ARMv6 which is why the HTC Touch HD2 (Snapdragon) can run Windows Mobile 6.5. However, ARMv6 architectures (X1, TP1/2, Touch HD, etc) are not compatible with ARMv7 code (missing/different instructions).
So unless a very smart cook can somehow recompile code (need the source code) or combine different parts, there will be no WM7 for any current windows mobile device besides the HTC HD2.
x1 didn't get wm6.5 officially if it will get wm7 which will prob not be out until a year from now don't expect it to come from official sources.....
Min requirements for WM7 is 1Ghz CPU (actually because of the instruction set), but also G-sensor and compass. HD2 maybe. Xperia no way.
Well you say processors like Tegre will be able to run WM 7, but i checken and Tegra is still ARM v6...
Anybody has any real source saying Wm 7 will be only for ARMv7?
As for G-semsor multitouch and sucks, that is all softwere, you can turn this things off, so apat from procesor, nothing else matters for WM7 to run X1, onl ARM v6 code is needed, all else can be done by cooking.

Hello,
I am brisschris.I am new to this site, but I’ve enjoyed posting in your forums.Microsoft confirmed that it is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22.To reach that milestone, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month. The tech guarantee program is not beginning immediately, but Microsoft did raise the possibility it will offer some sort of lower-cost upgrade to those who are already using Windows Vista.it is "Depending on when we do it there will be the associated accounting for it".
Thank you very much and Stay connected with me.

Uh.... we're talking about Windows Mobile 7, not Windows 7.
Come on Guys!
Please dont speculate about things there was lightyears ahead. Wait untill the time will come. We dont have seen WinMo 6.5 official on X1 yet, therefore we think about other things, which atm is morge important.
with best reguards.
sorry for my poor english
Well lightyears ahead you say, but i am certain i will have WM 7 on Xperia in abaut 3 months XDA does miracles
Certainly the most x1 user will it and im sure that the devs find a way to port it on x1. But except a few screenshots no specification of WinMo 7 was published. Therefore hope that the x1 get an official 6.5 Update. I think, this will reveal the way to WM7.
Just found this today:

I dont think so..
because WM7 comes out in March.
And xda support will there alway's be ( i hope and i think xD)
They won't kill WM, and even if they did, we would still have our forum and the freedom to probay do what MS didn't want us to mod in WM

WM 7 will be out in ...Mar....er.....May.......er.....will definitely be ready by Aug...er......1Q 2011.
To me, it is. Manufacturers are dropping it in favor of the much friendlier Android platform and the public seemingly lost interest in it. It will go like PalmOS did unless Windows Mobile 7 doesn't borrow anything from its ancestors.
It's about time HTC takes WM behind the shed and put it to rest until MS can show something worth using.
I'm tired of waiting for WM7, so I'm looking at the HTC Nexus 1 with Android 2.1 in January to be my next bad boy toy!

LOL, yep not waiting on the usa Leo in April but going to the Dark Side on Jan 5th It's still HTC and check the specs out which are impressive
Well, if they keep the winmo 6.x versions for some more, itll be enough to kill it. It cant even be compared with the android. My guess is if winmo 7 does not come soon enough (now hoping that it will be on the same level as android), well this will be enough time for the other OS to take over.

Hybrid resistive capacitive screens are the way forward. Or even multi-touch resistive. I swear we all use capacitive screens today slightly because of apple and the iphone...

I'm very confident this prediction won't happen in 2010.
Even other Mobile OS is getting more and more marketshare. But until now, WM is still the best. Other OS still has long way to go.

I think it's the opposite, Windows Mobile has a long way to go.
Let's see: poor online services integration, late release of a marketplace for applications, developers slowly switching to more lucrative platforms, manufacturers prefering up-to-date platforms and stylus-based navigation and I'm not done. Windows Mobile feels like Palm OS did 3 years ago.
