Hi,
I am getting a bit frustrated over this.
When I connect my X1 to my Vista x86 nothing happens (well the USB task tray icon show for about a second and vanishes again).
When I disable the "advanced option" in the USB/PC connection settings in the X1 I at least get a USB connection with something identified as "PocketPC USB Sync".
Any idea why this is happening and how I can get a real connection with the win mobile device center?
Thanks for helping me out!
Cheers,
Tillman
maybe give this a try:
http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index.php?page=Windows+Mobile+Device+Center+Troubleshooting
I've once had the issues of not able to connect my Windows Mobile device with vista too, and it can get very annoying.. good luck with it.
You might want to try and disable the firewall and then connect the device. I had this problem with Sygate Personal Firewall (sygate was bought by symantec and personal firewall is now terminated and no longer available)
Thanks for the quick response guys!
I already tried disabling the firewall (nod32) but that did not help.
Also checked all services - everything is peachy in that department.
But still - no connection.
When I switch back to "legacy mode" (disabling the advanced option in usb/pc settings on the device) then the device will tell me that I need to install active sync 4.5 or higher and wmdc still does not connect.
This is really strange...and annoying and the same time.
Any more ideas or any way for me to debug what's going on?
Thanks for you help!
Have you intalled "Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1" on your Vista-PC?
The MobileDeviceCenter should be standard without the need to install...
At my Vista Home the X1 had no problems to connect.
Open the Mobile Device Center and delete all old connections of other PPC. Then start your PC again, Softreset your X1 and try again. This should help. I had the problems too, when first connecting, because he didn't liked my G900-connection which was first
After this I too could install my G900 again and no problems since yet (2 weeks).

Well sometimes the Mobile Device center could stuff up or not work due to some issues such as installation of Mobile Device Center 6.1 went wrong. I have experienced that I think I didn't follow the procedures correctly and things just wouldn't work. Eventually I had to do some uninstall and reinstall many times to finally get it working.
When I first plugged mine it it installed some drivers but didn't show up in the Mobile Device Center; unplugging and replugging in caused it to work...did you change settings in between plugging in for the second time?
What I have tried so far (and nothing worked):
Uninstall / reinstall WMDC
Uninstall / reinstall Win Mobile Remote Adapter (yes, this does show up once I am connected with "advanced" USB mode)
Uninstall / reinstall "PocketPC USB Sync" (shows when X1 is set to legacy USB mode)
When in "advanced" mode I can also see a new LAN connection showing up in network overview.
The same X1 on a different Vista 32bit right next to this one will connect just fine. So it's definitely about a driver or config thing with this Vista.
This is driving me...well you know what.
btw, you did try restarting your comp when performing some of those steps, and you did try different USB ports right?
I know that you had to ask.
Yes I did. I have rebooted the system several times in between all those reinstallation tasks.
By the way. When I am in USB legacy mode and reconnect the USB cable then the X1 will show a messagebox telling me that it's connecting with the host and that the user credentials / user account (having to translate here) are correct.
But still NO connection visible in WMDC.
I had the same problem with my X1. I assumed that because my HTC Diamond worked the X1 would as well.
I finally installed WMDC from the SE install cd, and bingo!! al good. Hope it works for you...
Wow!
Even though it does not work (yet) it's showing some new signs.
Installing WMDC from SE disc fails at 99% progress and then rolls back.
There's gotta be some installation error log this, right?
Thanks for coming up with that suggestion. Really, I should try installing from vendor CDs more often instead of hunting down the latest version on the net.

maybe give event viewer a try and check under Windows Logs (not sure if it will be application or system tho)
just in case you aren't sure, in vista either type in "Event Viewer" in the start menu search bar, or type in "eventvwr"
Don't you just like vista?
That helped (to install SE's WMDC). The issue was that my HTC Universal was still connected to one USB port (for testing purposes since that device is not recognized either).
As soon as I unplugged the HTC I was able to complete the WMDC installation.
Unfortunately though it still won't connect to my X1.
Any more ideas?
what is your settings in Windows Mobile Device Center connection Settings?
Well here is my settings that is working with my x1:
Allow USB connections checked
Allow connections to "DMA"
This computer is connected to "Automatic" (this shouldn't matter)
Allow automatic device authentication checked
Allow data connection on device when connected to PC (this shouldn't matter either)
also, while this link was in the first link that I have posted for trouble shooting, just want to make sure you actually tried The offical Windows Mobile Device Center troubleshooting guide?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-troubleshooting.mspx
namely these steps:
Quote"
If Windows Live OneCare is installed on your machine, it may be blocking the device connectivity. Please click here for the steps to configure Windows Live OneCare to allow the device to connect.
My device wasn’t connected during this installation.
While it is not a strict requirement that you have a device connected during the installation process of Windows Mobile Device Center, we highly recommend that you do.
"
I didn't have the DMA set (changed that now). Everything else already was like you described and it does not work.
This really freaks me out. I always hated my iTunes/iPhone connectivity but that honestly works much smoother. Of course I do understand that this behavior is non standard as I have experienced myself that the phone works with my other Vista machine but that does not really help me here.
Any update on this? I am having the same problem.
I'm having the _exact_ same problem too, but in Vista x64. I don't know why WMDC can be such a c**t sometimes, as I have never been able to 'sync' with my Media Center PC.
My only saving grace is that my laptop has Bluetooth, and syncing works great on it. I have never had success connecting the USB cable (with many options changed around of course) to either of these computers. Only Bluetooth syncing works for me...
Hopefully we can find the answer!
What USB cable are you using??? the one that came with Xperia??? Cos the one that came with my Xperia never worked out of the box, it could only charge...
I also got another extra cord which came in another box, that worked fine for both syncing and transferring data until today, now it says USB device not recognized, maybe I was trying the flash X1 with new ROM through SEUS, did the whole lower volume key and power button to get the 3 strips.
Now I am using the USB cable that came with my external HDD, that's currently working, hopefully it won't fail me.
so any ideas??? I don't want to keep changing cables...

Hi all,
Just spent a VERY frustrating day - read all i could find and learned much more than I wanted to know about PCs (I use a MAc).
Upgraded to wm5 using Build 14343. Now I cannot load anything into the phone using Activesync OR Missing Sync. Activesync won't recognise the phone at all, and I tried every suggestion on the boards - firewall ports, tcp/ip, reinstalling 4.5 then back to 4.2.
It's interesting that Missing Sync (Mac) will recognise and sync but won't allow me to install - .cabs just vanish into the ether.
Is WM5 actually worth it all? It seems like I've lost a lot of useful capability (buttons, camera, etc) for no great reason.
Any solves greatly appreciated. Now I'm going to bed.
Paul D
Baniaczek's WM5 ROM is great for me. It has tons of things way better than the original Wm2003. Connects to ActiveSync without a problem. Try to put that one on the device.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM5_Home
Better File Same problem
I've upgraded the ROM.
Still no activesync. Ran the troubleshooter.
Said there's an issue with RNDIS not giving an IP address.
I've checked the LAN connection in Network settings but it won't repair.
I'm not even sure that Activesync created the link as there doesn't seem to be the "Connect using WM device" that it says should be there.
What now?
*&^%$* WinDoze. Roll on iPhone OSX.
Ahh. This is clearly an issue with the PC. If you were able to upgrade the rom - that prooves that your cable and your BA is okay. There must be some Antivirus, or Firewall problem. If you're using BitDefender Antivirus, for example, this is a known issue. You need to update it. Other antiviruses/firewalls may have similar issues.
Try to move to another PC, or reinstall your Windows PC. This problem is not related to your BA.
Another idea:
Unplug device, then
Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC:
Disable the Advanced network functionality > ok
Plug it back
This will make your PDA connect to the PC via a Serial link (Like Wm2003 used to), rather than a network link (Like WM5 uses to).
It's still a PC problem though.
reflash again your pda.
today i had the same problem after one clean intall.
upgraded again with the same rom (the one you can see in my signature) and now, i am able to use active synch.
Ok Some Progress
I disabled the "advanced network functionality".
Active Sync no luck - it isn't correctly installing the hardware in Virtual PC on the Mac. I don't know why.
However, Missing Sync now actually begins to load activesync on the PPC, and then gives this message:
"Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. The communications port is not available. Another program may be using the port, or it may not be valid.
Quit any programs that may be using the port and reconnect. If the problem persists, restart your device using hte instructions provided by the manufacturer."
I remember reading somewhere that Baniaczek had assigned certain ports to certain things. How do I find out which it wants and change it?
thanks guys, we may lick this yet.
Paul D
Same message in VPC
Hooray,
I now get the same message in Virtual PC, after disabling "Virtual switch networking" and restarting the PC.
This means that the issue is now the port on the PPC.
PaulD
That's great..
I don't think so...
In baniaczek's rom, COM6 is assigned to shared GPS, but that can be easily changed from the settings, by setting it to none.
Go with your BA to a real PC that has only WinXP and ActiveSync installed, and nothing else (especially no Antiviruses). And no virtual PC's, as they depend on the host os! It's normal, because if your host OS can't connect, the virtual OS inside will have the same door closed.
I had the same problem before, and I definitely state that this is a PC problem, not a device problem. Same hardware connected to a different PC, will work, you'll see...
Reflashing the rom may help, as it will be detected as a new harware, that your system will let in. But you say you already did that...
Won't actually solve the problem
If I had a PC, that would be the easy solve. I don't, and really need the &$# thing to work on the machine I have.
For the moment I went back to the original Mamaich 14343. I can get .cabs into the phone via the card reader (the original problem on the Mac is that Missing Sync 3.0.2 has installing issues).
that doesn't allow me to load .exe, for which I need activesync, on my Mac, which runs VPC 7.0.2.
I really need to find out why VPC isn't working with TCP/IP.
Baniaczek's ROM is the best apparently, but has a com issue. It is also much easier to installl than any others I've found. I tried Xplode's ROM kitchen but the exe file wont run.
Paul D
hey, reinstall again the rom!
OK OK
Ok Sandstorm, I'll try it when I get the chance. At the moment the phone works but this ROMisn't as good as Baniaczek's.
Thankx for the tips
PauL D
Device won't install
Ok Internet works. TCP/IP works.
Issue now is that the device won't install properly - keeps giving a #10 error (device won't start).
So I can't reflash the ROM or anything until I get XP recognising the connection.
Paul D
turn on the upgrade program, "kill" the active synch running processes in your xp taskmanager, set the device in "bootloader" mode, place it in the crade and run the upgrade.
When i do my upgrades, i never do them with active synch enabled.
upgraded ROM again
Upgraded again - still no change
I flashed again to Baniaczek's ROM. Still will not install correctly in VPC. XP says I have a Generic Blue Angel connected via USB, but will NOT install the WM5 device.
Is this a COM port issue? Can I change that (details please)? For some reason, VPC simply won't recognise the WM5.
I have turned off "Advanced network connections" on the XDA. Nothing. Turned it back on.
I have it set to: server-assigned Ip address.
I have tried to change the IP settings manually, but never had a response. I might fiddle with that again.
AAAAAARRRGH!
thanks all,
Paul D
I cannot get ActiveSync to detect my phone.
I get the XP message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug in the phone.
I have checked my USB drivers. They are more up to date (2004) than the ones listed on the Microsoft support page listed in the ActiveSync readme.doc
I am running ActiveSync 4.5 on a Windows XP laptop
Windows Mobile 6 CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
on an Orange Tytn II (ok, I will flash the rom once I have a working ActiveSync!)
I have tried switching off the firewall on the laptop - no luck.
Changing the in "Enable advanced network functionality" through the 'USB to PC' connections makes no difference.
In the Get Connected Window USB is listed as having status "USB is available" after clicking Next on Checking COM ports (it takes a while).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 (obtained from both the CD and the Microsoft web site).
I have done the usual cycle of switching everything off and rebooting (several times).
I have tried all four of the USB ports on my ASUS A6000.
New suggestions for things to try most welcome.
I did have the same problem myself when I first got mine. I also tried turning firewalls off etc. The only method that seemed to regularly work was to reset the kaiser and ultimately a hard reset
i had a similar problem and i found it was because i still had the nokia phone sync software on my pc too .. removing it sorted the problem
Soft reset the device, reboot the pc.
If USB syncing doesnt work, try bluetooth.
Works for approx 30 secs after reboot
I think I have a faulty phone.
ActiveSync works for about 30 seconds after a reboot, as does gps tracking, and then the connection is lost (and gps fixes on the last tracked location). I have tried soft/hard resets, all to no avail.
Unfortunately I bought the phone in London and I will have to wait until I am next in London to take it back to the Orange shop for a replacement :-(
I am having the same issue but I cant get activesync to work at all
I could recognise the kaiser on one PC but not on another, messed around and go it working then it stoped , all along it was mt Firewall, disabled the fire wall never had any more problems with activesync. that was my issue might be something for you to look into

I think your phone is ok. ActiveSync always gives all kind of problems.
I sync my kaiser on my desktop, my laptop and at work. For some reason, my desktop had exactly the same problem than yours. I tried everything!
Finally I found something that made it work much better. Go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck the option 'Enable advanced network functionality'
After that, I still get some random disconnects, but only happens like every 3 or 4 days.
Hope it helps.
I had this same problem (device not being recognised) but fixed it by connecting the USB directly to the PC not via a USB hub. This makes me think that the TyTN II requires the maximum current from its USB connector to work; a hub reduces the available power; some PC connections may not have enough and this could account for the problems some users are experiencing perhaps??

Have you fixed the problem yet? I'm having the same problem and tried everything suggested here.
I tried it on 2 computers with Vista. First it worked, but since my laptop with XP isn't reacting on my Kaiser anymore, Vista can't find the Kaiser too. Only a friend of mine, who has a Trinity, can use activesync. Is flashing a good fix?
Found solution to my problem
I have finally found a solution that works for me (having tried everything that everybody has suggested, plus more).
I found that if you have a password enabled (ie, something that has to be typed when the phone is first switched on; available via Settings -> Personal -> Lock) and a firewall running, then an ActiveSync connection fails for no obvious reason.
Disable the firewall and your phone will prompt you for the password after which ActiveSync works.
Disable the password and there is no prompt with/without firewall and ActiveSync works.
In my case I also had to untick the 'enable advanced network functionality'.
i am starting to thing there maybe a big problems here , i have the same thing and nothing has helped,,diffant pc`s i have hard reset the phone, unticked Enable advanced network. and still nothing.
The problem that I found was the notifications queue for ActiveSync on my phone had been corrupted.
I downloaded memmaid and used the "recreate Activesync" under the database menu.
Unplug from the USB, run MemMaid and on the "JumpTo" softkey go to "Databases\Notification queue". Tap on the arrow to the right of "Add..." and tap "Recreate ActiveSync". Soft reset your phone wait 60 seconds after everything is loaded and plug the USB cable in. You should be good to go.
This is a known problem with ActiveSync and happens on a plethora of WMD's, not just the Kaiser or HTC. I used to have the same problem on an iPaq PPC. Microsoft's official answer to this was it was the OEM's fault for not following strict rules on implementing properly coded USB drivers.

Sorry partner, I guess it's not always the same problem.
I've been using my AT&T Tilt for nearly a month without any problems, but yesterday for reasons I cannot determine, my phone suddenly stopped being recognized by any version of Windows XP or Windows Vista. I tired Windows XP SP2 in a virtual machine on my Mac, I tried it on my wife's Windows Vista machine, and I tried it on my children's Windows Vista machine and I received the same error each and every time.
No matter what machine I plugged it into, I would immediately get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error and neither ActiveSync on Windows XP nor WMDC on Windows Vista would initiate a sync.
I've hard reset my phone multiple times, I've uninstalled and reinstalled both ActiveSync and WMDC, I've even flashed to a different OS on my phone (using my MicroSD card) and nothing has worked.
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the USB connection on the phone may have failed. I've been contemplating sending it back to AT&T since I had a malfunctioning pixel in the middle of the screen, but with the recent problems I'm starting to lean more towards returning it and less towards living with the pixel issue.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the USB problem?
Just a quick update, when I arrived at work today, I attempted to sync with my work computer (Windows Vista Business) and I had no trouble at all. I'm going to take home the cable that I have here (which came with the BlackBerry I use for work) and see if that makes any difference with my home computers.
wow
I can confirm this as well. I have the Tilt and I used a blackberry cable from my job and it synced up flawlessly. before i was getting that usb not recognized as well.
I'm having the exact same problem now.. it worked fine for 4 months and now.. it just says usb not recognized. Please post the results if your blackberry cable. thanks
I just tried a brand new usb cable and it still didn't work for me
I have the same problem but i've got a solution for this and it's very simple.
For someother reason ActiveSync will boot on the background of your device even when you close it, it will boot up within 10 min or less.
This is the thing you need to do:
Before you plugin your usb cable to sync......
Run taskmanager and close activesync. When you are sure that this application is not running then plugin your USB cable.
It worked for me!

I had this exact same problem happen to me at the end of November - I was using WMDC 6.1 for months then all of a sudden I could not connect (same error message you described). I went back and looked through the MS Windows updates and identified a NVIDEA driver update had caused my problem. Used system restore to roll it back and then everything worked fine.

ya..i bought my girlfriend the HTC Touchdual and has the same problem as well. She can't seem to sync with her Win XP and is only her 2nd time trying to sync and it failed already. In between, I don't think there was any internet connection to update anything.
Please help!
(Sorry to borrow this thread to solve the same problem but on another device btw, I own a Kaiser myself but currently didn't face any problem yet..touch wood!!)
Dwimmerlaik, did you have any luck fixing the problem?
Solved my USB Connection issue in Vista
After trying everything I could find on the net to solve my inability for Vista to stay connected with my HTC Kaiser (ATT TILT), I found the problem exists with the MicroSD card. No matter what, Vista would connect then disconnect my phone after a few seconds. After weeks of searching I finally just decided to take out my 2Gb MicroSD card.....and now Vista maintain connections and I am finally able to sync via WMDC.
Spread the Word!!!! Take out the MicroSD.

-Try to use the USBs at the back of your PC(not on the front of the case).
-Try to buy another cable(That SHOULD BE an USB2.0 HighSpeed certified shielded cable. That costs something about $6 ).

Didn't work for me either
I've tried doing that multiple times..
Go to phone, menu, options, time zones tab, uncheck the Auto change time zone & clock.
This is a known bug in the firmware that causes A/S to automatically start & then sometimes it tries to start a second sessions of A/S when you plug in to your PC. Give it a try, have you ever noticed that A/S is running in task manager even though you're not connected or just reset? Just one thought.

After a hard reset on the TyTn my computer is no longer detecting it when I connect the phone to USB cable. The computer makes a sound when I connect it, but Windows Mobile Device Centrer say that TyTn II is not connected, and it does not show up in My Computer eather.
I've tryed to delete the partnership and reconnect the phone, but nothing happens.
Can anyone help me please! Now I cant install any of my programs og transfer files between the computer and the pocket pc/phone.
Try this:
tap Start > Settings > Connections.
tap USB to computer.
Uncheck the Enable advanced network functionality box

I uninstalled Windows Mobile Device Centrer and then tryed the tip you described here. At first it looked ok, my computer detected the device and installed the drivers and reinstalled Windows Mobile Device Centrer.
But my device is still not showing up in Windows Mobile Device Centrer or My Computer
Check your personal firewall settings and open the ports MS asks you to at the Windows Mobile home/support page...
Go into task manager & see if Activesync is running. I have the same problem with my tilt & if I kill activesync then reattach it takes a moment the first time, but then it works.
Make sure you are running the latest version of WMDC. I absolutely could not get WMDC to work with my HTC Wizard for months. After MS came out with an updated version of WMDC (around June, I think) it started working fine.
If you absolutely can't get it to work, consider using emoze for over the air syncing of cal, contacts, mail, etc. (or an on-line exchange account.) I had to do that for a few months until I got it to work. Emoze has the advantage of being free. Unfortunately, neither will allow file syncronization, tho.
There is no activesync running.
And everything was working just fine before my device went "mental" and I had to hard reset. So before the hard reset I could use WMDC on this computer, transfer files and run active sync. But now I cant.
I also got an online exchange account so I can sync calender and contacts. But I want to be albe to transfer files to my computer and install new software.
My WMDC version is: 6.1.6965
Some more info about the computer may help. For instance, I take it from your usage fo Windows Mobile Device Center that you are running Vista. In any case, since the problem is with the computer and not the Kaiser, I would see if the manufacturer would provide some support.
Yes, im running Vista and I buildt the PC my self.
But Im not sure its realy the PC that is the problem, because I made the changes (Hard Reset) to the device and thats what caused the problem.
Anyway, I was hoping for some way to debug/troubleshoot this problem.
I am having the same problem. I sync to any one of 8 computers at work and one at home. Work runs XP PRO and Home VISTA Ultimate x64 all worked fine untill this week. I have not made any changes since the last sync, the computers know it's hooked up due to activesync opening and trying to connect when I plug in via USB. But it never connects. I want to flash to Dutty's newest ROM but can't connect. I sync all contacts and e-mail wirelessly but need the computer to flash (I do not have a sd card yet) Any idead would be great! I have tried the ideas listed above but no joy. I have not hard reset the device as of yet ( I need some things off of it first)

I really need help with this!!! I'm pulling my hair out!
Did any of you that had this problem find a solution? I have the exact same issue except a hard reset will fix it for a while, and then the problem will reoccur a few months later. No software has been added during the time frame. Very annoying.

Hi, i have recently installed ms active sync 4.5. However my tytn ii will not establish a connection with my pc. It charges just fine but does not connect. I have searched all over but did not find a solution to my problem. i was wondering if it mightbe the cable i got with my device when i purchased it. it is a usb to "mini usb" like the motorolas and nokia 6300 use. Could this be my problem?
I doubt it's because of the cable (though could be). Try unchecking start>settings>connections>usb to pc.
I have the same problem, and have tried connecting with and without advanced network functionality.
activesync does not respond at all, even when trying to connect from activesync on my pc.
I have the same problem, charging o.k., but USB connecting not work
Before I had same problem. The reason was I have installed some 3rd party program what somehow blocked the sync.
I have un-installed this program but it couldn't help because the registry setting was modified by this software. So finally I ended up with a hard reset and reinstall everything. After that the sync just work fine again.
Sigh, i thought it might come to that.
hard reset 2x, no effect
flah rom from SD card, Duty V1 Daimond....no effect
flah rom from SD card, L26 V6 Daimond.... I have the same problem, charging ok, USB data connecting not work...
Well, hard reset complete to no effect. So frustrating!!!! I have been troubleshooting for ages and have nothing to show for it. Surely someone on this forum has solved this problen before.
Hi
I had the same problem following a rebuild of my laptop.
Problem traced to my firewall which had blocked the connection.
Once rule changed to allow no further problems.
Hi colinm, what did you do exactly? It may help me out of this situation.
Doesn't anyone know anything about this?
Yeah i had it get the latest update for active sync from windows its a latest driver pack goto teh windows home and look on there it sorted my one out
what version is it? i have 4.5 right now.
If you could provide a direct link that would be great.
I was trying in 2 different PC ( Vista, Win XP), but the same problem, cable is ok....
I would really like to know what the more experienced members think about this but no-one really seems to want to reply. also i would like to know is the usb data cable plug identical to the htc original handsfree plug which is an exact fit. as i mentioned before my data cable is more like a mini usb, like the motorolas use. it fits (not perfectly like the handsfree), charges but there is no recognition between the device and the pc (xpSP2 running activesync 4.5 which came with the device).
Please help, i may seem to be a noob but i have tried available advice and troubleshooting has become repetitive.
My Mobile Device Center from my Tilt to Windows Vista stopped working a few weeks ago. Tried everything to no avail.
there was one thing that i couldn't do while troubleshooting.
"Do the following:
Disconnect the device.
Open Network Connections in Control Panel on the PC.
Note If your Control Panel is set to Category View, open Network and Internet Connections, and then open Network Connections
Right-click the local area connection created by ActiveSync, and click Properties. In the Connect using box, Windows Mobile-based device is displayed.
In This connection uses the following items, select every check box (to select all protocols).
Reconnect the device."
i cannot see the network icon active sync has created. which leads me to believe that this might be the problem. does anyone know how to fix this?
will updating to SP3 do anything, gonna try will let you know.
