Don't worry, lots of other people are having the same problem, I'm one of them
I think it's a YouTube server glitch, look here;

So I just noticed this today when I tried looking up a youtube video:
I went to the Youtube app and found a video to watch and not even a second after I clicked the video I received the following error:
"Cannot play video" "Sorry, this video cannot be played."
I hit OK and tried another. Same result. I tried about a dozen more... same.
I thought that MAYBE the Youtube Downloader app from the Market messed something up. So I uninstalled it. Same result. Rebooted my phone. Same.
Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT:
I originally had this issue over a year ago and the problem literally cleared itself back up. So for anyone still having this issue I removed the ***FIXED*** that I had on the title so you can all post your issues.
A little tip.
Please post details such as cache to sd, rom version, phone version, carrier, wifi/3G/Edge and a logcat would be helpful too.
Also list everything that you have done to try to fix the problem (wipe, cache clearing, etc.) so that you can be helped.
Thanks.
I've had the same happen to me. Seems to happen more often when I click a link from another site. When I browse in the Youtube app it seems to work more often.

It doesn't work at all on the Youtube app.
It doesn't work from a site either. The site just prompts me to view in the browser, steel or youtube app. Of course I don't have flash so I can't view it in the browser so my only REAL option is the app (which doesn't work).
Are you sure there wasn't a problem with Youtube's mobile site at the time you tried? I had a problem like this one night, and it was gone the next day.
I just tried it again. Still having the same problem.
Besides, if it was a problem with the site then I'm certain that more people would be experiencing this problem.
i also noticed this problem last night when trying to show this chick an airsoft video of an event i played in.... sure most have heard of it. "Operation Irene III"
it wouldnt play any videos. however, using the youtube downloader app it downloaded the video just fine. and i was able to view the video.
Just putting that out there for you guys
UPDATE:
I just tried it again to see if it would work. Most do now, although I clicked a couple that didn't. It must be a problem with Youtube and not my phone.
Phew! That's a relief.
Thanks guys.
the same thing was happening 2 me last night while i was trying 2 watch a couple of videos on youtube...

I've seen this issue when I had network problems - for example, I had a low wifi signal and the phone was apparently switching between edge and wifi back and forth while in the middle of downloading and playing a youtube video. The error showed up in the middle of the video.
So, it may not necessarily be the youtube website or your phone, but it may have to do with the state/quality of network connection too - e.g. how many packets are dropped, and how the youtube client is able to handle it.
Just checked it out on mine. I'm not having any real problems. I will, of course, post any problems that occur when I see them.
i seemed to have this problem when i had too many apps running, a quick jump to task manager and kill unused tasks seemed to clear it up. also a reboot would clear it up, im thinking it's a memory issue.

Nah. Tried all of that. Taskmanager, reboot, cache clear, you name it. I think it was a problem with Youtube.

Tried it on 3 (THAT'S RIGHT... THREE) different wifi networks, my 3G network and an Edge network. It wasn't a bandwidth problem.
My 3G I was averaging around 500kb/s
1st wifi was over 2000kb/s (@work)
2nd wifi was around 300kb/s (@work)
3rd wifi was about 4000kb/s (@home)
None were able to play any of the random youtube clips that I tried (which were over a dozen).
If you were wondering if I'm persistant... I am!
i have this problem too, there's a way:setting--application--manage applications, then find the youtube app and push the button"clear data".
try it~

Tried it. Didn't work. But it doesn't matter now anyway because whatever the problem was, corrected itself.
Must have been Youtube last night and this morning (2am to 7am PST)

well I feel rather stupid now
So I had this problem, and thought the issue was cyanogen. Turns out I was blocking some obscure process with droidwall that is critical for youtube or media player or whatever. I'm afraid I can't say which process it was, because I just went through and enabled everything that remotely looked related to the system.
update
this happens to my g1 with cyanogenmod 4.2.3 all the time. i've cleared caches, rebooted, wiped, etc
repeatable always. random, but repeatable.
any ideas xda ?
Whenever I click to watch certain videos for example a comic video from raywilliamjohnson, the app will load the right title, description and comment section but the video being play will turn out to be something else like a cooking video or a game show.
I noticed the problem first happened one night when I marathon-watched subscription videos from raywillamjohnson on youtube app (2.0 version) After an hour, the app started to play wrong random videos. And the problem has been permanent ever since.
It seems like a cache issue and I have been trying to fix and the following is what I have done but nothing solves the problem permanently.
- I factory reset, deleted cache partition, deleted catch and data of the youtube app, formatted phone memory. Still the same.
- The problem only happens with wifi connection, 3G connection will load correct videos.
- Youtube on browser plays the videos perfectly. Problems only with app.
- The problem happened first time with the 2.0 youtube app that I updated. I tried the 2.1 app but still the same problem. Downgrading to the stock 1.6 youtube app solved the problem. Videos loaded correctly. Perfect.
- I had been happy with youtube 1.6 however, the latest firmware update from Samsung includes 2.0 youtube as stock. And the problem comes back again. I found youtube 1.6 apk from the internet and replaced the stock 2.0 with 1.6 but once I reboot the tab, it will install and replace with 2.0 youtube app. So this doesn't solve problem permanently...
- I believe this is a cache issue hidden somewhere (maybe I'm wrong?). I didn't root the tab so I tried to clear the cache and data of every running app and somehow the youtube app played videos correctly again. But I lost all other settings and this messed up the settings of the whole phone and I finally had to factory reset again... and guess what.. the problem came back :S
I'm really at loss what's going on behind the system that causes the problem.
I googled and searched the forum and seems like I'm the only one in the world with this weird issue. Please help (T.T)
Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks.
Same problem, running on an Evo 2.2. Happens for me on 3G & 4G.
My temporary fix that should work for you, is once the video starts, click the HQ button. The video will pause a moment and reload and it should be the correct video. You can then click the button again, and go back to whichever viewing mode you were at before.
I had this happen last night. Was watching a news broadcast on Youtube and all of a sudden the video switched to a hunting show, but the audio stayed the same...
Was very odd, but I didn't find a solution..
Same goes here, I have been facing this annoying problem with my "HTC Desire HD" and other devices!
I believe the latest youtube app is missed up. Also I like the previous Youtube app which I had been using on my previous device "HTC Hero" I think it was 1.6 version.
Moreover, I agree.... clicking HQ tap immediately just before the video plays will prevent it from playing different thing and taping back on HQ will plays it back as HQ I'm assuming.
Now how can I make the old version permanent even after rebooting.
I am facing this problem with three devices.
Desire HD
Acer Iconia a500
& HTC Flyer
All of them are linked to the same youtube account.
It might be a subscription issue. I think I have read it somewere.
Thank you
OMG, so this issue has been there since 28th December 2010
since it still happen to many people until now (24th Oct 2011) at lease 2 people I know just asked me about it and how to solve it.
I found a link under google's Help forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=06b3f1a933950603&hl=en
the only solution now is to click on the HD icon when the video starts playing, or to use the browser.
Not sure why it is taking google that long to solve it, or they are not yet aware of this issue!!!
YouTube for Android plays the SAME VIDEO no matter what I choose
Instead I see another video, I've rebooted, uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared the app's cache, data, whatever even factory data reset .. Can anyone help! Advice! Thanks
droids got hacked on youtube
yep i am also seeing this and did all things that people have done , also when you goto click on any vid you can hear a double click as it is being redirected to a different video.
Someone has hacked youtube lol
o well and it is not doing this on apply crap .
Problem still exists!
Its 2013 now, and I face this problem not just on the app but also on the browser!

Try changing your default search engine to something else (android device) and or allow 3rd party cookies (windows 7). The problem is actually with your internet service provider. You can change this as well for a more perminant fix, but first test it at a friend or family's house.

I started having this problem... finally I just did a master reset and haven't had the problem since.
thank you I did a reset and everthing working fine now.thaks again
Hi guys!
Just to let you know, i had the same problem esp. when i'm trying to download Microsoft games ie. large files and when i'm no 3G net. To solve the problem i just had to connect to a wifi network and everything will be perfect. So i guess it is to protect the user from extra cost when downloading large files using 3G network.
These are my thought and experience, hope it will help some of ppl that have the same problem. Might be not you guys coz you have already solved your problem by hard resetting the device
Just started today... Every time I try to watch a Youtube video from any of my devices a captcha screen appears on the TV and there is no way to enter the text. I have searched Google for a fix but am coming up empty.
Has anyone else experienced this.. Very annoying.
I have tried a factory reset on the Chromecast, restarted the phone, computer, logged out and in of Youtube..Nothing works.
Thanks in advance of anyone has a fix!

Are you getting the captcha if you play the video on laptop/mobile. What kind of network you are on? If you are in a shared network (office public or college etc) and someone else is abusing youtube you may get the captcha.
There are lots of ways your account/network will get flagged for verification. If you use a computer on the same network to enter the captcha, you might can get it to go away pretty quickly. Usually these things clear up after a day or two.
Yes, mine started several days ago as well. I often get the captcha screen on Youtube when surfing on my computer. However obviously having a keyboard the problem is solved. The other day when Chromecast started showing the screen there was nothing I could do. I tried to stream from my tablet and my phone, but neither showed the captcha screen. Only the TV showed it. This is because Chromecast is seen as it's own device, like a mini computer.
I have been emailing with Google and called the phone number to discuss. What's been more worrisome is that so far I don't feel confident that they understand what I'm talking about. Which seems crazy. My next plan is the next time it does it bad like it did the other day where I had to give up I plan to video it and post on YouTube to send them a link. It's the only thing I can think of for them to get the message.
I also did what was suggested by going to another computer and getting the screen to come up on it's own hoping that if I entered the words it would work. Nope no luck. The captcha wants to know that the particular device is being maned by a human and not just an autonomous device trying to get YouTube hits. So Chromecast is on it's own unless they do a software patch to fix them all to skip the captcha screen.
We shall see

Thanks, I am on my home network. I also get the captcha on the device but it's separate from the one in the Chromecast.
See people here don't quite understand like the people at Google don't understand. The captcha screen is unique to each device that tries to access YouTube. and if you're getting the screen it's because the overall network you are on hits youtube a lot. Perhaps it's because you do a lot of YouTube watching, or it could be because you're on a network with many other people. There's absolutely no way to really solve this issue. This is a bad bad bug that Google overlooked. It should be easy enough for them to solve because you know they see what devices are trying to access YouTube, and you know they know when it's a Chromecast device. So they don't even have to write any update for the Chromecast, they simply need to solve it on the side of the YouTube site that when it sees a Chromecast device it will skip the captcha screen.
Google are you listening?
OK today everything is back to normal.. Very annoying though and I hope Google addresses it..
Thanks for the replies!!

Okay so, to put it simply... I own an Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 which was rooted up until this day. At some time yesterday, YouTube randomly stopped having any connections to the internet.
At first, when you go to the application you can see videos, they load fine on the list as well as the names and thumbnails, but as soon as you click on them / search for videos / wait for 5 seconds you will get an error "Attention - There is no network connection right now. Please try again later."
I'm 100% positive that it's nothing with my net. Browser works fine, I don't use facebook so no idea if it works or not. I even stood right next to the router or modem, however you call it, with full signal and couldn't go to YouTube.
Now, I unrooted the phone. The issue is still there.
Restarting, pulling out battery, factory reset - Nothing worked.
I'm starting to go crazy with this.
No, youtube doesn't even work if I go the mobile site and try to run the video with the application.
No, it does not show up in "Manage applications" so I can't clear it.
Trust me I'd definetly want to go to Google Play and download a newer version, but considering Google says that Youtube isn't compatible with my device / or the actual INSTALL button on their page doesn't work on my phone.
Do help, I got nothing to do on the phone if there's no Youtube to watch videos or music.

The same thing happened to me yesterday with my Xperia x8 phone. I get the same message when I try to watch a youtube video. It was fine a couple of days ago!
If there's more people with the issue, I doubt it's a phone problem anymore. Youtube is most likely doing something then.. Either way, bump, in case someone knows how to fix this.
You might be right... Maybe they did some kind of update that caused this. Anyway, if I find a solution, I will post it here.
Try upgrading to froyo or gingerbread. It works fine on gingerbread.
I can't. My phone model is too high so I can't install 2.2 or higher.
I've been having this issue as well. There isn't anything wrong my connection, as I can load all the pages >.< I just wish someone had a solution. All I've found to do is clear the app data and that's done nothing...

You can (2.2-2.3). there are roms for locked bootloaders. You can consider that and see if it helps.
Also, update youtube if possible.

I can't. I don't recall finding one for 11W48.
You can't update Youtube further on Android 2.1 (aka above 2.20.16)
