Noob proof dictionary and guide - Off-topic

Hello. I`m new to this forum. Found a lot of useful stuff and understood a lot. I`m new in smartphones. It takes a lot of searching around to find what you can actually do with your XDA.
I think it would be great if somebody will do some kind of a noob dictionary and how it works. How to change skin, menu, input method, what is it flashing and so on. It took me couple hours on this forum to actually understand the possibilities of smartphone. I came here when searching for new way of input method and found tons of another unbelievable and useful stuff.
So I`m asking: is here somebody with some spare time and so kind to do a noob proof guide and dictionary for new smartphone users?
The possibilities are unbelievable. It just takes hours of searching to find and understand how
By the way sorry for my English. I`m not from english speaking country.
Does somebody else think it would be great?

Hi,
Look here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Scroll down and you will find a glossary/dictionary for noobs near the bottom of the page. As you are scrolling down, you can also click on the picture of your device and it will take you to a page with all sorts of information about your device.
The xda wiki is a great source for the basics. You can find everything you need to know about flashing your phone, etc.

Backing up existing rom before UG to WM6

Hi Guys,
I am an absolute newbie, so please forgive me if I am asking a questions thats simple, or explained somewhere. I have tried searching arround but not got anywhere.
I have searched loads to get a WM6 rom, and at last I have found one. I am ready to go; have my image, and it looks like it will automatically do the update for me.
However, after experimenting awhile a go with ipaqs, I learnt a valuable lesson; backup your existing rom versions.
Does anyone know of a link to a wiki or can anyone explain how I can backup my XDA o2 Mini's factory installed WM5 ROM before I try to flash it with WM6?
That way if things dont go to plan, i can always reinstall the existing system?
Dont think I could even attempt what im trying if it werent for the people on this forum, so respect, and im sorry if im asking something thats explaind elsewhere. Just point me to where I can do further research and im happy to work it out myself.
Cheers guys,
Luke.
On behalf of the newbies here, welcome to xda.
Sometimes the search tool is a bit overwhelming in its response but i dont believe you when you say you didnt get anywhere by searching . My advice to you is to read the wiki and understand it. Browse through the enormous wizard forums for hours and hours before you play with your expensive toy.
Ignore your wife, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mistress, your nurse, your pets, your babies, your visitors, your friends, your enemies, etc for a few minutes and just read. Take notes if you think there's too much.
Post your questions in an informative manner ie mention what device, carrier, rom version your using. This helps more knowledgable people answer your question.

New guys with a lot of questions.

Hello everyone. As you can probably tell I am new to this forum. I recently bought my first PPC (Tilt) and I am thoroughly happy with my device (thus far). Seeing how I am new to this genre of phones. I decided to surf the internet to see what kind of info was available for my new toy. To make a long story short, after I surfing the internet and visiting many different forums. I noticed the XDA or XDA developers being used frequently. So I decided to do a Google search which directed me here. I must admit I am thoroughly impressed by this forum (website) and plan to be a contributing member. I have learned so much about the capabilities of my phone. You guys are really amazing. Which leads me to my problem? I am having a difficult time understanding the verbiage being used to describe the various different upgrade features being discuss on this board. All That being said I have some question I would like to ask. But first I have decided to condense my questions on one thread as to make it easier for other interested parties as well as for me to find. However feel free to direct my question or to add a link that can answer my question at your convenience as I know many (if not all) these question have been answered in other threads (sorry remember I am unfamiliar with all these new words).
1)Is there some sort of getting started manual that I can used to better understand the various different words being used on this forum?
What does flash, cooking, roms, etc mean?
2) I would like to get rid of all the ATT stuff (for a lack of a better word) that on my phone and upload all the high speed HTC stuff.
I would like to do this in hopes of increasing performance as well as to have all the programs and features that where meant for the TYTN 2. If one could list the steps or refer me to the link that could do this it would be greatly appreciated.
3)How does a person find out about the various different applications or program that are available for my phone?
This would be of great interest to me. In particularly when it comes to music and radio stations. What is the best music/media player available? What is the best program to listen to various radio stations? And what site can I use to research this stuff?
4) Lastly I am really interested in all this voip stuff (Skyp, Google talk, etc). It would be pretty cool to use the internet to make phone calls instead of paying for daytime minutes. How would one go about doing this? Am I to understand that I can used my phone exactly the same way but through the internet?
I wanted to take the time to thank those who answered my question (and those that didn’t) as well as to developer of this board.
Thank you
Bulldog1
i think if you spend some time looking through these forums you'll be able to extrapolate many of these answers.
i'm not trying to be a jerk but your questions are kind of extensive and mostly answered with a bit of digging.
sorry.

No manual - you learn from osmosis.
I am pretty new around here as well... but a long time lurker...
So - to help as much as possible - here is a quick answer to your questions:
Flashing is when you overwrite / rewrite the firmware. It is the method used to put different ROMs on your device.
Cooking is where you create a custom ROM image - so it comes customized with whatever the chef puts on it.
ROM - think of it as an operating system image that is transfered from your computer to your device.

Go to the Kaiser Upgrading subforum - sticky at the top is the place to start.

This site is chalk full of information about these kinds of things: Kaiser is pretty new - so hit one of the other forums under XDA. Software sitting on top of the OS should be pretty standard... ;-)

Kinda. But not as well. Data connections are more prone to dropping than voice calls.
It is cheaper to call internationally though... ;-)
So if you have a good connection and you aren't moving... it is a great alternative.

yeah, a glossary of terms would be great. as I read more it makes more sense and I find myself searching some of the terms online. be nice to have somewhere with meanings of WWE, SPL etc mean.
Welcome to the board. I would recomend reading all the wiki's that are stuck in each section and also the search button will bring many many threads on all the questions you have asked. Try this one to get you started. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser Good luck
d
I'm in the same boat as you. I read through the posts here and found them really helpful, especially the stickied ones about flashing ROMs.
The best way to get rid of the AT&T stuff is to flash your ROM. Flashing your rom to the HTC-rom will wipe the AT&T bundled software and replace it with the set that comes with the TyTn II (although no TomTom).
I've been trying to find answers to some of your questions too (especially where to find good software and media players), so I'm looking forward to replies from the older members.

WWE: World Wide English
SPL: System Programming Language (my guess?)
Welcome to the forum, i am also new. As to your question of what is the best media player, it is TCMP, it plays almost everything (even .flv files!) but support has been discontinued because the ppl made it a commercial product...mind you very tech savy ppl are still continuing support for it and adding codecs and stuff.
to download it and some codects, go to this website:
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/ht...cial-hybrid-media-player-all-codecs-here.html
Hope that helped
Thank you. I can understand that some question may too broad to answer in this thread. I understand that alot of my question are answered in other threads and for this I appologies.
The the reason I ask those question is becuase I do not understand the language being used. I have read (reread) the stinky under the kaiser upgrades tabs but still do not understand what exactly it is saying (or what it is supposed to do).
While I agree most of my other questions can be answered in other threads it would be of great help to me if someone could explain in greater detail to me my question number 2 which I have reprinted below.

Step 1: Download and use kaiser-HardSPLv1.zip and follow directions found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1562805&postcount=1
Step 2: Download HTC rom from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/5781641...dio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship.rar.html
UnRar and run the executable.
Pat yourself on the back for getting me to type this out instead of reading the other forum yourself. ;-)
Oh - and if anything goes wrong... don't blame me.
You will also need the keyboard fix found here:

You guys are great, I can see a sprite of sharing and helping in this forum. Again, you guys are the best, especially thanks to Daniel.
I bought a Chinese unlocked version Kaiser in Hong Kong, and I found out that it is not that convenience to me even though I can read Chinese. With Chinese Windows, it runs very slow. I decided to flash the ROM with HTC standard English ROM.
However, because of warranty issue, I need to backup the Chinese OS ROM, and restore it to its original setting if in case I have to take it back to HTC for repairing.
I am totally new to PPC or WM devices (I used to be a Palm lover), I wonder if anyone of you can tell me how to "Backup" and "Restore" the ROM. Detail instructions will be highly appreciated.
Sorry for my stupid questions, but I really don't know how. Whether I get the instructions or not, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

Tweaking suggestions

SEARCH
Its all out there.
geez thanks for the help
first thread you see in the list answer most of your questions. So go read that one first.
Well you have until tomorrow to find all tweaks in this forum
Take your time to read and search instead of just asking around.
Searching never hurt anyone, especially as the one of the first threads in the Diamond forum is all about Tweaking.
See here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398265
To be honest tho, I havent loaded any of those tweaks on and my phones pretty good as it is!
Sometimes I text a little too fast for the phone to catch up and it misses out the space, can be a bit frustrating, but i think thats user error...hehe, other than that i love the phone! Its the best ive owned...to date.
I know there are alot of threads and posts on here so Searching could seem a bit daunting but the best way, for me, is to click on the SEARCH at the top right of the screen and then click on OR USE THE BUILT IN FORUM SEARCH and then type in the SEARCH FORUMS section goto the SEARCH BY KEY-WORK box and type in TWEAKING or TWEAK.
Then in the SEARCH OPTIONS section goto the SEARCH IN FORUMS list and select DIAMOND from the list.
Scroll down and click on the SEARCH NOW button.
All the results will appear. There are a few tweaking threads to look at so they should give you the results you want. Hope you enjoy your new phone when you get it.
Hope this helps.

Newbie Here

Hey people, I've been using and reading this forum for a while now, but this is my first post, so please excuse me if I break any rules or make any mistakes.
The reason I post is because I often find myself confused. It is easy enough to look up aplications and such on the forums and download them, but then I start getting confused...
Different ROMS, Themes that I have no idea how to use, Manilla - what is it?, GSen?
As a complete novice, I find it very hard to understand whats going on around in the Theme, Apps + Software forum. The Wiki doesn't seem to explain much, or I am missing it.
I guess what I'm sayign is, maybe a noobs guide to Theme, Apps, Software, etc. should be created, I dont know...
I mean, I want to customise my diamond, It's obvious you can, but for the not so tech savvy people out there, it can be hard to find out where to start, how to start, or what I need to do anything.
Thanks for reading
If this is stupid, breaking rules or just uneeded dont hesitate to delete.
Thanks
Killi
dont mean to sound patronising or out, read more, thats all i can say.
you might find clues to problems in some of the other forums, this comes with time!

Cooking rom's, finding usefull info is hard...

Hi all,
for starters, I know where the search-button is and I know how to read, I've read the stickies and most of the links, so no obvious remarks please
I'm having a hard time finding good threads to read about creating/editing/cooking roms, understanding what XIP/SYS files are, knowing how to strip/add programs,...
I've used keywords like: rom cooking, xip, how to, port, tut(orial), etc...
It only gives a gazillion answers and most of the time useless threads...
Once in a while it's worth reading, but most of the time it's junk or way to specific/difficult...
So the question is, could anyone link some usefull good threads/discussions/how-to's that they've read?
Maybe you could give it a rating yourself going from beginner/intermediate/pro...
Maybe such a condensed topic is already on the forums, then please do show me, since I didn't found it yet...
If you're first thought is "god, not again", then please, don't respond at all
Thanks for your time!

Jack,it's not because of my low post count, that I'm just around here...
I've seen and read that post several times, I've dumped my own rom and downloaded others, I extracted them and started fiddling around, but that's all what I did, fiddling, since I don't really know what I'm doing...
For instance, I'm reading and seeing XIP everywhere, but I don't even understand what it stands for, I can't find (or don't use the right keywords) to find any decent info on it...
I found this great post of Ameet about porting XIP, but that's already about hardcore coding without the basic info I hoped to find... I'm just a beginner, that'll be stuff to read when I'm several months further...
It all starts with the saying, "give a man a fish and he can eat for a whole day. Learn him how to fish and he can eat a life-time.."
The post you refered to is great to learn how the kitchen works, great for learning how to use tools, but the action eventually only shows how to remove standard OEM stuff out of a rom. Nothing more...
Understanding the ins and outs of a rom, how it's build and why, how it's linked and what it does... That's where I think it starts, but that's what I can't find... If no-one ever wrote anything about it, then I will, but then I'll have to try and find bits of pieces of info everywhere... And that's why I posted the question. So people could at least point to some information they know where to find...
I've even seen and tried your work... It's great, but it's a full working, locked rom (at least, it doesn't break down using htainlin's info to the same files and folders as a stockrom does, or I'm using the wrong tools)... I can't see what you've done to make it that way... I can't open it to compare with something stock to see what has changed and conclude what your changes really do... I don't mind reverse engineering, I do have a brain I can use to figure things out..
Well, sorry for the rant, and if I somehow offended you, I didn't intend to, I just hope you now understand what I'm trying to accomplish
Thanks for all who even tried to read this
@Lokatho
Thanks! I've only read the index, but I already know I'll be busy reading that for a couple of hours...

Well, I never judge xda member on their post count since I know some experts in this field maybe new to XDA-developers and some people w/ very high post count are keep on posting **** (e.g. someone in X1 general inventing 4D glasses and UI. )
Most kitchen (at least the one I pointed to) is just a Dos batch script to automated all the tedious command and parameters w/ all the needed tools. You can learn a lot of in and out if just you open it w/ a editor, follow the steps manually and research those tools individually.
If you really want to learning cooking in the hard way, I had a writeup long time back for Asus P525 which most of the steps still apply to any HTC rom nowaday.
All the documents for how to fish is here and we are still seeing people creating new threads for questions that been address millions time. This is a developers forum afterall and no one is responsible to feed you while your hands are free.
Regarding my rom, I never intend to lock it. Both V1 and V2 are extractable but rgu are removed due to space and speed considerateion. Afterall, the main purpose of a rom is for daily "use" instead of "teaching material". Why am I bother to slow my rom down just because I have to let others to extract it?

This part was for the locking section you refer to
I already figured out a number of reasons why it would be "locked", and space-limiting was one of them... I definately understand your reasons and by no means am I complaining about it... It's just a pity I can't use such good material as a reference to study...
As for examining the tools, I was already wondering what they're all doing and what they're needed for... However I'm a bit cautious since I don't know how they work... This'll be a matter of trial-and-error...
I will definately have a look at what you've written, not that I'm keen on really wanting to learn it the hard way, but it might make it easier to understand the working of some of the tools...
About the fishing, you are right, no-one is obligated to give me anything. I was merely asking if some-one might remember a post they once read and found very usefull in understanding or learning the process of cooking...
As I already stated, I used the search-button and already found bits of information that I thought were a little usefull, but I'm having a hard time finding any good posts... The topic Lokatho refered to was a great link and gave me some good information and I've got some nice material to work and practice with... It would've taken me ages to find me or just dumb luck...
I'm keeping together all the links I used to read and learn and might paste them in a write-up once I think I've learned a fair bit
To finalise this reply, I understand your frustration, there will always be people who ask the most simple things on any forum, may it be ppc, car, house or anything related... Questions in here like, how do I have to flash your rom, what is hard-spl, why can't you make a 'insert langueage'-rom, reporting a "bug" that's been declared not a bug for several pages already... Those are the most annoying questions I've seen until now(just to name a few) and are really an indication those are posted by lazy people...
Cheers
