Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to disable auto starting the Windows Mobile Device Center automatically starting when you connect the USB cable. I don't use MS way of syncing, all I need from the connection is file transfer with retaining device access to the SD card, and internet connection routed from my PC to PPC. Technically I just need it to update my RSS feeds once it's on cable and to have access to files.
I was ultimatedly able to disable WMDC by renaming C:\Windows\WindowsMobile\wmdcBase.exe to something else. Raphael synced much faster, I was almost immediatelly able to access files on the device. The problem is I lost internet access on the PPC by doing this.
Sooo the ultimate question is:
Is there a way how not to start the annoying green ugly thing that takes up whole screen when you most need it clean and only thing it does is slowing your initial file sync, BUT retain the network feature as well.
Or is there a way to make the Device Center start completely hidden at least?
I just hate when Microsoft tries to make an app idiot-proof and in the same time makes life miserable for the advanced users...

I have an unlocked Cingular 8125 (i.e. HTC Wizard). I am currently 'connected' to my desktop but I am unable to sync. I have read many posts on here and elsewhere and I am unable to find an answer to my question.
Here are the pertinent facts.
I have Activesync 4.2 beta installed. No other PPC devices are on my system. I have deleted my partnership several times. I have installed and uninstalled the Activesync program. I have deleted the Activesync directories from my programs. I have emptied out my inbox.
I have soft reset more times than I can imagine (I have not hard reset as I am fearful that I will lock my 8125 and I do not have the unlock codes nor, from the posts, does that appear to be necessary).
My device is connected. It shows up as Windows Mobile Device #8 in the Network Adapters portion of the Device Manager in my control settings.
I can explore on my device.
The options for syncing are just not there. On my desktop or on the device I can hit 'sync' and nothing happens. Nothing.
I am just not sure what to do at this point.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Maybe stupid suggestion, but in the Active sync connection settings on your desktop pc, did you enable usb-connections? If not, try that, should help
Yes. In fact, I unplugged the 8125 from a USB hub and plugged it directly into the PC as I read that sometimes the hub can be a problem. I thought I said this the first time, but I had to retype my post.
It did sync the first time. I was in the process of installing third party software when it stopped working. I cannot sync nor install any software (or remove software) at this time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51649&highlight=
I cannot seem to be able to load that file. I can only Explore on my 8125. I can extract the .cab file to my desktop and I can copy the unextracted .cab file to the 8125 (or the extracted files) but I cannot install the program.
Any suggestions?
Have you made sure the correct things are checked under the properties for the network adapter?
"In the "Properties" Window, be sure to uncheck all check-boxes in the "This connection uses the following items:" list EXCEPT for:
* Client for Microsoft Networks
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
Reference this link for more suggestions:
http://pocketpccentral.net/help/as4_tshooting.html
I am still in the same state.
It 'connects' but will not sync.
Again:
I unistalled Activesync
I deleted the folder ...\programfiles\microsoftactivesyc and all the files
I cleared out my garbage can
I checked my firewall exceptions
I checked Norton antivirus and I am not running a firewall there
I checked the Network connections and made sure that the correct three boxes in the properties for the network remained checked
I plugged the device directly into the USB of the computer
I soft reset my device
I rebooted my computer
One thing I do note when checking the properties of the network connections is that windows refers to this as Windows Mobile Device #9. I have deleted all other devices so that only one device is showing up. I am not sure why it still finds this as device #9.
Questions:
Might this be an outlook problem? Should I try and repair outlook?
Might a hard-reset help me? One thing I cannot do even though I am 'connected' is install any programs. It gives me an error message everytime. I can, however, add files to the storage card (e.g. mapopolis maps).
I have an unlocked 8125. I am happy to do a hard reset but I am woried that I will have to unlock the phone again. Does anyone know if that is the case?
Can anyone help me please!
try to upgrade to the most updated ROM - 2.25
it worked 4 me.
Todah rabah.
I will try it
I have recently reinstalled windows on my computer, and have upgraded to Activesync 4.5 as the other versions are no longer available. When I sync my pda with activesync, I put it in its controller and it syncs email etc... fine.
Then I do something on my desktop and leave it there - I work at home so I want it constantly syncing with my outlook
About 5 minutes after sync, it disconnects, and I have to take it out of its cradle and put it back in again - very annoying!
I am not sure if I have missed some "turn off if inactive for" setting, but I cant work this one out...
hardingt
same problem with me
I also encounter the same problem after I migrate my BA to WM6, any help guys ? thanks++++
same problem
anyone have any ideas?
I've got a similar problem with my hermes.
Funny, my old angel doesn't have this problem tho.
Anyway, try turning off the 'advanced network functionality' and see if that makes it any more stable.
Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Other 'fixes' I've seen mentioned are:
Soft reset the phone
Uninstall, reboot, reinstall ActiveSync
Delete the association between the phone and computer, reestablish
IMO, activesync is a nasty hack that needs to be dragged out back and shot. Start with a clean code base, or make it a strictly backup solution with plugins for extra things, like syncing with outlook. That's how Palm does it, and I never had an issue with my old Palm Pilot not syncing.
Problem solved
turning off the 'advanced network functionality' in Settings-connections-USB to PC solved my Activesync 4.5 - Connection keeps turning off problem.
Thanks to jdc
Antivirus
Turn off your antivirus or other security programs . it helped me to connect . I turned off eset smart security on my pc and my BA became connected .

That's another possibility.
when the 'advanced network functionality' thing is enabled, it enabled the RNDIS part, which makes the phone part of a private network that exists between the phone and the activesync program. Any communication to the phone is then done over a 'network bridge' of sorts. If a firewall or other network security program is running and has not been told to allow that traffic, it will block it and the whole thing will not work.
For the record, I downloaded activesync again and did the 'uninstall, reinstall, doo-da, doo-da' dance. After it reapplied some USB hotfixes that I don't recall from the first time I installed it, my RNDIS dropping issues have gone away.
Of course, it would by nice if microsoft would post the version and build number so we know if there has been an update to it...
EDIT: ...and it looks like I spoke too soon. Sometimes the enhanced network function stuff doesn't kill the connection, other times it does. Bluetooth and USB-serial connections are solid. I'm about ready to trash this hack program and find a 3rd party sync application. This is getting st00pid IMO... Grrr...
I'm starting to fear if something is broken in the phone because no matter what I do, it fails to work with mac osX..
Any suggestions on how to get eg. WmWifiRouter work in macs, or even how to sync it with some synchronizer application -because none of them fails to connect me whether it's BT or usb.
I think the right procedure is to launch eg. missing sync or syncmate what else are there? which is the most reliable?), then connect the usb-cable, then choose Activesync as connection type and that's it?
Doesnt work for me No matter whether 'enable advanced network' is on or off. The applications simply fail to detect my device.
If I choose the disk drive, it works for a while as an external drive but soon stops responding or turns helluva slow.. I've tried copying pictures and movies from it for months now (tried this every now and then), but I'm running clueless on what to do
What are the correct bluetooth settings in mac with diamond? I cant get it to work either.
I want to use it as proper high-end toy, I even have 1mbit wireless net in it when using it with WmWifiRouter, but even that doesnt work for me and I cant understand why Help pls
I use Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, and I connect to Bluetooth. It syncs seamlessly and transfer files without problems.
You can find the program and / or the information here
Another option is Sync Mate, it's free for Standard version but you can buy additional options (iTunes sync etc) in the Expert Edition.
http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html
Prefer it to Missing Sync personally.....
Missingsync vs. Syncmate
I tried both and my suggestion is not to try it. Reason being if you use Missingsync, use missingsync only. If you use Syncmate, use syncmate only.
However, Missingsync is better due to its more stable system. Syncmate tends to double copy items in calendar and contacts. It'll be an annoying mess to clean. I did it and it's no fun when you have over 500 contacts in your phone.
Anyway, that's my recommendation.

Only had that issue with an early beta of Syncmate, never had that problem again.
I have an expert edition from Eltima (sponsored by Eltima for testing their beta's ).
I must admit that the software had some hickups when it still was a beta, but I nowadays it's running like clockwork.
My 2ct's (euro cts = 2.75 $cts )
I'm going crazy trying to figure out why syncmate won't sync with my phone. I installed the driver on my phone, yet it doesn't connect with the program. I open syncmate and it never recognizes I have a phone plugged in. I've followed syncmate's steps to no success. Does anybody know what to do?
I tried both for a season and found MissingSync to be a generation ahead. It's been out for quite sometime and is very stable. I had hard time syncing with Syncmate. I sync my device via BT and works like a champ. It's a bit expensive but well worth the price.
My gsm diamond is arriving soon and I'm trying to make sure everything will work with my macbook pro (OSX Leopard), so I've read up on syncing programs for mac and upgrading hard spl etc.
My problem is that all the files I've come across for upgrading hard spl and radio are in .exe format. Is it possible to upgrade using a mac or do I need a pc with xp/vista?
As far as I know syncMate/MissingSync can't read and open .exe
(I've searched ways of "opening the contents" of .exe using stuffit and file juicer with the possibility of a .cab file being inside but to no avail. I may be barking up the wrong tree with this one...)
Sorry I've been searching for aages but couldn't find an answer. Is there a solution to what seems like a fairly simple problem...??
You can sync your WM device with your mac as explained before.
To upgrade the ROM, you will need a Windows installation. Personally, I tried to do it through a virtual machine with WMWare but never succeeded (It seems that once the device reboot, it is not recognized anymore by the virtual machine)

Actually, i always upgrade using the Mac:
-take the signed_image.nbh and rename it to DAIMIMG.NBH
-connect the diamond as a disc
-copy the file to the internal storage
-flash by rebooting into bootloader (volume down& back plus reset)
Safe simple & fast!
I've got a MacBook Pro, and I've been working around a bunch of these issues. First, why are you trying to cable sync your WinMo phone? You are better off keeping everything in the cloud. I have an exchange server at work, so all my contacts, calendar events, and emails sync OTA.
Also, Google has a new beta out:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
This lets you use your gmail account with Activesync if you don't have an exchange account. You can manage all your contacts, etc OTA for free. Much better than paying for wonky syncing software. Plus, when you flash your phone a million times, it's pretty easy to get everything back on
As far as flashing, you will need to flash from the bootloader from the internal memory if you don't use Boot Camp. Parallels won't cut it, either (not sure about VMWare); you have to be in windows for everything to work smoothly. However, it is nice that the Diamond can be put into mass storage mode; it makes copying files to the diamond a piece of cake.

The problem with that is that you have to delete everythin on the internal storage first. (I had to the last time)

You can't sync music and pictures with your solution.
Peoples,
After flashiong a new ROM I have lost internet connectivity on my device when connected with Activesync to PC.
Re-flashed a different ROM (HTC stock standard) then another and the problems persists...this is with no additional s/w loaded on the device.
This makes me think it is an issue with my PC and possibly activesync. I re-installed activsync, no fix!
The device connects (no problems) and synchronises and I can open the deivce on the PC and see all...
Can anyone guide me through checking my PC/internet connections so as to troubleshoot as this is driving me nuts!?!?!
BTW, thought it might be firewalled out by windows XP but all seems in order there...
Looking forward to any help soonest......
Just to add that all works OK using my home Wifi connection....just when connected to Activsync with the USB cable......
Solution found....yay!
Unbelievable but true....simple solution that I waster 8 hours trying to fix by installing new ROMs, re0-installing Activesync, USB driver....you name it!
The solution was to Open ActiveSync, go to File, Connection settings.
There you will see "This computer is connected to" - Automatic
Change the dropdown arrow to.....The Internet and now it works
This Activsync software is pure rubbish...always has been and always will be....
At least I'm back in business and I hope others learn from my grief!!!
Heya guys, what would you suggest in terms of a program that is a good alternative to active sync. i'm getting really really pissed off with active sync claiming that some of my stuff is not matching and it resyncs and wipes all my special ringtones as well as my contacts in my Peoples tab in tf3d.
I share your frustration but have found a sort-of solution. When you get the error "There has been change made on your server that requires re-syncronize all items on your device" I do a hard reset. You will loose all your changes since the last sync, plus you have to reload everything.
Many may dissagree with me on this, but here is how I have deleted this problem.
1) Hard Reset
2) Set Owner Name
3) Connect to PC and Sync. Do not disconnect from PC.
4) Open Active Sync or WMDC and change your Sync content to your preferences and let it sync again.
5) disconnect from PC and turn off "Advanced Network Conection or Enable faster data synchronization" (depends on WM version) on the phone: Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC
6) Soft reset, and you are good to go.
7) reload all apps.
Personally I do not reload from a back-up as I find the problem can reappear. Others may find this overkill, but this problem bugs me so much, I am wiling to go to consderable effort to get rid of it for good. If you ever turn on the fast/advanced connection again, the problem will resurface.
I think the problem has to do with the high speed data transfer. Probably a polling timing or something. I think the PC or Phone is looking for a response and not getting it fast enough which causes the full resync. By disabling the advanced or faster USB connection, it works fine for me.
Other uses have also reported that syncing via BT eliminates the problem, but I have never tried this.
I used to get this about every 4-5 weeks, but since I maded the changes described above, I have not had the problem for over a year unless I forget to turn off the advanced/fast usb sync after a ROM flash.
Hopefully this will work for you as well. It is frustrating when you cannot trust the phone to keep your data entered between syncs.
Doug M.
I would suggest using PIMBackup, it runs from your phone and saves everything or just the items that you choose onto your storage card. It is way faster saving and retrieving your contacts than active sync, It also allows you to restore without a computer so if you mess up your phone and have to do a hard reset when you are away from your computer you can get your contacts back without going out of your way to get to a computer
