When flashing Roms..... - Wing, P4350 Herald Upgrading

Do you flash hard-spl at that time too, if the new ROM needs hard-spl? Or do you flash hard-spl ahead of the ROM flash? Sorry the the dumb question, but I have searched and either did not use the correct terms or just didn't seem to find the info. By the info that I have read, it would seem that you would flash hard-spl and then go about flashing ROMs. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also, I think I have seen some mentioning of SD cards during the flash. Should I remove any SD card from the phone before flashing?
Thanks

Nevermind....After reading iPhone iWing's post a dozen times....I got it.

ROMS??

What are they, what do they do? I basically have a stock Tilt, i see people on here talking about flashing their roms, what is that? and why would i want to install a different rom than the one that comes with the phone? and when you flash and/or add a new rom does that erase all the programs on your phone like doing a hard reset?

Wing Flashing

i am no n00b to flashing in general, as i have a wizard and have had to deal with both versions. a g3 device that has no security and my current g4 device. coming into these herald forums im confused as to what i MUST do to flash roms without any problems as long as i follow instructions. so here are my questions.
1. do i NEED to hardspl to be able to flash any rom without any security problems?
2. do you use the RUU updater to flash the nk.nbf that people put out or are the roms not distributed in nbf format?
3. if they arent in nbf format, is that when i use that herald-uspl file?
guys i am not dense, but i really like to be sure of what im doing. the wizard forums are A LOT more definitive and explain things much better. hence why i am making this thread. im sure much of the info has been duplicated and said many times, but i just need to clarify this before i flash my sisters device. if it was mine it would be different. thanks for the replys!

1) Nope, I use USPL to flash
2) USPL uses a hacked RUU to flash nbh files. We do not have nbf.
3) Just use USPL, its the safest way to go.
If you are looking for roms check out the herald rom thread.
If you still have questions about flashing, take a look at this --> All Important Links
Make sure you read everything carefully before making any modifications.

Is it required to HardSPL our device each time we want to flash a new rom?

Is it required to HardSPL our device each time we want to flash a new rom?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My logical thinking tells me that once we flash HardSPL we wont have to keep doing it every time we want to flash a new rom. But I could be wrong as my logic may be flawed and I didnt think it through more deeply.
XDA Developers Rules!!!
I almost don't believe in such question, did you read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431217
If you use HardSPL you have to flash it only one time, then you can flash all the roms you want
But you can use USPL too, in this case you have to use it every time before flashing a new rom.
Then, if you want to test a lot of roms, I suggest to use HardSPL. If you want only to change your rom with another and you want to stay with it for a long time then use USPL.
I hope I've helped you, good luck

I don't believe you understood my previous question. I was asking how to flash but if I need to HardSPL every time I want to try a new rom. But thanks for trying your best to help answer.
Hi bro You dont required to flash hardspl everythime you flash a new rom, it should also mentioned there on the wiki, once u have hardspled ur device you can flash as often as u like , unless on a weird occasion ur hardspl is overritten which is unlikely.
I will close this thread now.

SPL questions

Apparently the theme I want to switch to requires a custom SPL. I have some questions about that process. First, which SPL should I use: HardSPL or the Danger/Haykuro SPL?
I've read that flashing a new SPL is more dangerous than rooting/flashing ROMs and poses a higher risk of bricking your device, is that true?
As for the installation procedure, I was going to use the guide at towards the bottom of this page. Is that the best method to use? I'm new to all of this, so thanks all for your patience!

haykuro, and make sure you flash the radio first. Find yourself a good guide. I recommend theunlockr.com

i recommend the danger spl too. but "danger" is really an extreme term. if you read up on it, reread it again, do EVERY instruction as it says, you'll do just fine. i've done it twice already (yes, on the same phone) and i've succeeded both times. do your research and you'll do fine.
Thanks for the responses. I'll do what was suggested and use the Danger SPL, but what exactly is the difference between the two and why is Danger better?
As far as getting the SPL file on my SD card, I was planning on downloading it to my computer and then copying it to the SD using the USB cable (since I won't have access to a card reader until Saturday). Is that acceptable?

READ, READ AND READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN. When you know for sure you know what your doing, read it once more.
Secondly make a nandroid backup.
Next mount your sdcard so you can access it from your computer and then place the spl in the root of your sdcard. Then copy your nandroid backup to your computer (say c:\g1backup for example) unmount your sdcard.
Reboot into recovery and flash the latest radio (you should already have it... but just to be safe) then flash your spl.
Reflash the Cyanogen Rom. Unfortunately, I found this to be necessary because using the Danger SPL modifies the /system/ partition so you can't restore your nandroid backup... but you should be able to restore your data after you flashed your rom.
cd c:\g1backup\nandroid\H*\*\(latest_nandroid_name)\
fastboot flash userdata data.img
Binary, when you talk about READING THE INSTRUCTIONS MANY TIMES, can you please paste me the link with the exact instructions that I should follow? Thanks

Scroll down to "Flash the New RADIO and SPL" Follow the directions completely. Don't skip anything.

Ordered a G1 and had a few questions

First off I want to say that I know my way around a WinMo flash, reflash, nand breaking and all that jazz pretty well. But Android...not so much.
I ordered a G1 off Ebay recently, it has been shipped, but in the mean time, I was wanting to research the rooting and flashing process..It looks very involved...Very involved..lol
I've read the guides and such but was curious about the rom/radio bricking issues. With WinMo theres alot of radios..How about Android(My phone is an unlocked T-Mobile)?? Are there still known issues?? I like this rom http://lb.vg/fVl3w
Are the guides for rooting on here currently up to date(I think they are, and they probably are)?? Do I have to root to flash a new rom on there(I think I do)??
Sorry for the n00bish questions, but I really don't wanna kill my phone.
Can all bricks be fixed via the user??
Thanks
Edit: What is the situation of Flash?? What is supported??Is Hulu supported??
2.1 and 2.2 Froyo..Whats the difference??

First root (did it yesterday for the first time, phone was rooted when I got it).
You need root for certain apps, for installing another spl, custom roms.
Root installs recovery (if I remember ok).
Upgrade spl from stock to 1.33.2003 (zip file in recovery). Now you can use fastboot (safer!).Reboot in fastboot and flash first another recovery, then another radio (2.x) radio (needed for spl 1.33.2005), reboot again, go to fastboot and flash the dangerspl 1.33.2005 (or use MTDpartitions, but I got problems with it). Then flash roms.(no need for the old hardspl).
Flash not supported(arm incompatible).
Bricks can only be fixed with an JTAG, so be carefull (always wait) ! ROMS can't brick your device, only the officials can (which contain spl and radio).
Read for flashing the spl's (if you have rogers(canada) it's different).
Idk what this user means by saying that flash isn't compatible with the arm processor.
But yes android 2.2 supports flash all the way to flash 10 but on the g1 I don't think it would be so good on 528mhz because flash is pretty bloated on system resources. But flash videos are fine hulu runs fine for me.
Woops sorry about the double post I refreshed page and it submitted info twice. I did not see a delete function.
Should I do any sort of formatting or partitioning on my SD card or just let the G1 do it??
I've got an 8gig SDHC Class 4 card also.
I've also been reading about J-Tagging the G1..Theres an adapter on here http://miniurl.com/49008 and it's 20USD for the adapter but I think I have to heek it up to an Omnia Repair box..Is that right?? This video http://miniurl.com/49009 shows em hooking one up to a white box..and the only white box on there site is for the Omnia Repair one and it's 229 Euro's(304USD).
Does the first reply have the correct steps for rooting my phone?? Is that for all versions. I'm not sure if mines a R29 or lower.
Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks
