I'm a college student and I really like gadget type devices. Do you think the Tilt is overkill for a college student? I know the iPhone is supposed to be the best for college students and stuff, but I don't like the limited nature of apple's products.
Do you think the AT&T Tilt should really be only for professional users, and if so what do you reccomend instead that does have WiFi (a key to my purchase!)

i guess it's your opion, i'm sure there's plenty who will tell you the Tilt/TyTY II is better for college students, it doesn't really matter what it's suppose to be for it's what you want. All the iPhone really is, is just an ipod w/a phone feature in my opion, how is that the best for college students.

If you are a Mac guy than it is hard to go wrong with the iPhone. Just remember it is more of a music player than a smartphone.
Yeah I guess I mean more popular among college students.
I am not a mac guy at all, so that's why I'm thinking about the Tilt. Just wish it wasn't so bulky!
I say go for it if you can get a good deal. it's not over kill if you use it right?
I'm only in high school and i love my Tilt. So it's really for anybody.
I am not a business user at all, although it is a huge help in keeping up with to do lists, appointments etc... It seems to me the calendar functions would be ideal for a college student, to keep track of exam dates etc.
There are so many FUN things you can do with the Tilt too
Mine is full of music, games and other goodies which would definitely not fall under the business category.
The only thing is, I believe the iPhone is more of an as-is type phone. You take it out of the box and you're ready to go. The Tilt, you will want to customize to your liking, which in my opinion is the fun part. And here, on xda you can find so many wonderful threads, and helpful people that you will soon become obsessed with tweaking your phone, lol. You can spend hours on just how you want your Today screen to look, let alone how you want it to function
Besides, the Tilt can do everything the iPhone can do, and more

i am a college student and i run and manage a online ecommerce business and i wouild say that even if i dididnt i would still love the tilt

I'm jobless, hopefully a Masters student by the coming September , and I sue the TyTyn2, I dont have appointments to keep, nor do I use the Document editors etc... Then you might ask what I need the TyTYn2 for? We'll I'm a BE in Mech,aspiring to become a Programmer, hobby programmer at the moment actually, the good thing is I can run J2SE apps on it, theres a C# compiler for it, and its hackable, coming from the Linux(Motorola EZX E6) side of things.

I'm a college student as well and I specifically bought the Tilt for school! It's got wi-fi so I can check email and all of that on campus for free and the 3G if I need some speed to download a file while I'm on BART for school. Also, the calendar options are great! I use it to keep track of projects and class meetings and the like. Office support is awesome too so I don't have to drag my laptop out when I want to work on an english essay for example. I'm currently trying to get a C++ compiler to work on it(getting my AS Degree in CS) so i can do work on the go. Also, in my opinion, Kaiser way better than the iPhone. No 3G on the iPhone, its a closed source system mainly(at the moment at least) and one big disadvantage is no replaceable battery so if you run out or forget to charge it, you're a goner. Hope this helps!

i think that having a pda phone is a great thing for a college student. i used to use my phone so much during school, i used to access my schools wifi, download ppt presentations, open up teachers powerpoint slides, send email...and even take notes in MS word. the one thing that i never got around to was buying one of the bluetooth keyboards like the iGo. If i would have had that, it would have made note taking a lot easier. In all honest, my phone was my email/phone/mp3 player/notebook/web browser all in one. Helps keep you organized, and a hell of a lot easier to lug around compared to even the smallest notebook. And really, you still keep a lot of the functionality.

The reason I picked the Tilt over the iPhone, was EXACTLY because it is more
geared toward business, whereas (in my opinion) the iPhone is geared more toward multimedia. The iPhone is a great phone, and fantastic at what it does, but, I live & work in a Windows environment, and having pocket excel, word & outlook is a must for my needs.

Well, the iPhone has third party software also, very similiar to Windows Mobile, matter of fact it has a wide range of open source software that installs with just a click. It is great if you a more than average phone user, the iPhone is great. It allows customization just like the Kaiser.
But if you want your phone to be an actual PPC, join us here at XDA. I used both phones, I however prefer my Kaiser, because it like the "freedom", I hate apple's unlocking policy, and unrelease SDK.
Well, WM Phone beats iPhone with 3G, and if it applies, a hardware keyboard.

Well you can send and receive MMS with the iPhone with the help of third party software which is still freeware. I just hate to be bias in helping him decide what phone to get.
The nice thing about the tilt is that you can flash other roms on it and not have to worry about your sim being unlocked or locked or what hacker came out with what app, etc.
The guys hacking the iphone are great but I don't want my phone functionality being dictated by a hobby hacker...I'd rather have my extra functionality dictated by that.
In the current issue of PCPro magazine (UK) the Orange version of the Kaiser is chosen as the best smartphone in a comparative test.
I notice that the test lists the huge range of features that the Kaiser has as a big plus point, plus the keyboard.
Having had the Kaiser now for about three weeks, I am coming to the conclusion that the Kaiser is the technological equivalent of a Spork. A spork is a cross between a spoon and a fork. At the risk of being a little unfair, its not a very good spoon and its not a very good fork, but at least its one utensil rather than two. I wonder if the PCPro guys really tested out all of the Kaiser's functions (such as the camera - slow and no flash); or the video; or the less than intuitive functions, of which there appear to be quite a lot? In my experience, easy to use it ain't (although I admit to being a smartphone novice).
It has occured to me that the Kaiser is probably best suited to techno geeks rather than to your average user. I remember that years ago I bought an Iriver MP3 player rather than an Ipod, because it had more functions. Most of the iRiver message boards were concerned with how best to tweak the player, so that it would be easier to use (as easy to use and as intuitive as the Ipod). Eventually, I got fed up with the iRiver and bought an Ipod.
My conclusion after three weeks is that the Kaiser sells mainly on multi-functionality, whereas the Iphone sells on useability (and looks). As a non-techie (as most punters are) I think that the Iphone would probably have suited me better for internet and email. I hope to change my mind as I persevere with trying to get its various functions to work.

Thats why i got the Tilt over the iPhone though. I knew that i could customize and do tons more stuff on the tilt over the iPhone...maybe that just means i have too much time on my hands...
ps, i also got an iRiver over the iPod. my reasons were that i could treat it like a hd instead of tying myself to iTunes (i though you can go around iTunes, but thats besides the point).
If you wanted to browse the internet, the Kaiser is the way to go.

Possibly, as I do like to play with things! I kinda think of it as a Swiss Army Knife. Lots of little functions, and possibly a compromise as a result. Could it have a better GPS, Wifi, etc? Yes, but I bet that would effect battery life. Better multimedia support? Personally, I haven't had an issue with it, but out of the box an iPhone is tied to iTunes (does it have the issues with MP3's and WMA files that iPods have / had?). I like being able to sync my Kaiser with Windows Media player, or just pop my memory card into my laptop and copy over an MP3 manually.
Can I play with my phone, and just factory reset if it needs to go in for repair? Yes. Could I do that with the iPhone? Well, wasn't there that little issue with iPhones getting bricked when applying an official Apple upgrade on certain networks if you had 3rd party apps installed and voiding the warrenty?
You do need to play a bit with a Kaiser to get the most out of it, but this is a wonderful community and resource for doing just that. What are your issues with Internet and email? Have you tried the Opera browser to get around the internet issues? Personally, for sending / receiving email with and without attachments I have no issues. Maybe this is because I am a techno geek and have used PDA's for years. I'm sure that once you get your Kaiser setup the way you need, you'll be perfectly happy. I know that this has been the best 'out of the box' device I have had and any geek stuff I have done is just personal preference, I could have lived without it and not compromised the end result.

yeah, the Swiss Army Knife analogy is a good one. The scissors and screwdrivers never seem to work well, but the knife is a good bit of kit overall.
I really do want to love my Kaiser and am making some progress with it. I can now receive the emails (i.e. those of my main pc email account) but still can't manage to send them. I keep getting the following error message from the server: '550 Administrative prohibition - relaying not allowed'. No idea what it means. I think I may have the outgoing mail server wrong somehow.
Incidentally, if I click on streamimg media and see the rtsp:// what do I do next in order to get, say a BBC broadcast?

To me its like the difference between one of those really basic calculators with the really big buttons on the front (iphone) and a full on scientific graphing calculator that does everything (Kaiser). Yes the first one will do for most people and is easier to use, but for anyone who needs the functionality the scientific is the only option

That means you are sending via one server but as if from another.
Change your outgoing server to the correct one and use authentification.
To see streaming media, go to the relevant site and click the relevant link
The tilt is meant for geeks. That's true.
I had an 8525. I've never been so impressed and so happy with a phone. I could do literally everything i wanted. Then the iPhone cam out. I love macs, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I was bought by the intuitive browser and phone capabilities.
However, within the 6 months I had it, I felt the iPhone was directing me moreso than I directed the iPhone. I had to type a certain way for the keyboard (which was the weakpt) and had to deal with slow EDGE connections. Also, besides the cutesy programs like the program where you can take a pic and then put pirate hats on them (o wow.), there wasn't really much to offer.
I recently got a Tilt, now I'm wondering - why did I even stray in the first place?

That is the best analogy right there.
And FWIW, I see no reason to ***** and moan about something NOT being "perfect" None of them are so for the sake of your own health and sanity lower your expectations a bit or you will find yourself constantly dissapointed.
The Kaiser/Tilt is a damn good device that is capable of a whole lot. Which makes it appeal to a very broad base of users Nuff said. You want perfect? Then either customize your Kaiser to fit YOUR needs (and be happy you actually have that option... <cough> iPhone </cough> )
Or design, build/manufacture your own.

Yep that would be the case! My ISP is plus.net in the UK for internet and email, my mobile phone provider is o2. Now on my laptop, to send email I use the server relay.plus.net. If I use the same one on the Kaiser (unless I'm on my home network connected via my wireless router) I get that error message. Changing the outgoing to server to smtp.o2.co.uk allows me to send email from the Kaiser when I'm out and about. The incoming mail server never changes. So what you need to do is find out what the outgoing mail server is for your mobile p-rovider, enter that in your settings and you should be good to go!
Liked your extra analogy to the swiss knife thingy, it may not be perfect, but what else has all the features that kinda do the job?

Yep - geek and proud - reckon the Kaiser is the best thing since sliced bread. Many moons ago the non-geeky devices were known amongst my fellow techies as "tarts' systems" politically incorrect expression now but I've been too long in the business to drop it and I've yet to find a more apt repost to people who denounce those of us with a healthy appreciation of technology as geeks!

I have an appreciation of technology, but I don't think its good for my health! I am one of those unfortunate persons who love gadgets, but often does not know how to get them to work! At the moment i feel like a failed wannabee geek. I spent hours yesterday trying to get my pc email to synch with my kaiser, without success (the t- mobile wizard didn't work for me!). I still can't get streaming video to work either. I too hope to get to the point where I can say that the kaiser is the best thing since sliced bread

Dear Microsoft,
Lately I’ve been bombarded with commercial after commercial showing random people (and their self perceptions) stating that Windows 7 was their idea for one reason or another. I’m not completely disgusted by these or anything, but it started my mind on one of those winding roads a character in a story might have to take to get home, or to the girl, or to the climax, or… well I guess that is kind of repetitious – but the point is, I started thinking about the variety of Microsoft’s operating systems and the history they’ve had – rather, our history together.
I’ve used just about everything Microsoft has created… I started my computer “education” by soldering a few broken parts back together on a Commodore 64 I found in a dump, and then learning BASIC on it (the BASIC on the Commodore 64 was a variant created and licensed by Microsoft). Right now, I’m typing this in Microsoft Word, on a laptop that has Microsoft Windows Vista, being distracted by a cellular phone that runs Microsoft Windows Phone 6.5.
That was a mouthful when I read it aloud.
But the reason for this letter is not so much a history lesson, but a worry of what is to come. It seems the goal over there the past few years is some cross between being different and being more like Macintosh, or Google, or insert company name here, and I’m here to state that I don’t like the transformation the publicists and tech news sites are ranting and raving about.
A few examples?
- Most recently must be the attempt to remove the clipboard features from my phone. I say “attempt”, because I am willing to bet that will be brought back, either by you or some developers out there.
- Office 2007’s menu structure looks like someone tried to “make it better” and ruined it.
- Windows Vista and Windows 7 both look like some kind of cross-dressing Microsoft product who was “supposed to be a Mac”.
What happens when you become so close to the competition that nobody can tell you apart? Developers and IT teams may not like parts of Windows, but they are able adjust most of what they don’t like to work for them. If this path continues, and all of the contenders out there do the exact same thing, you’re really shooting yourselves in the collective foot by taking away your uniqueness.
I guess what I’m really trying to say is “different” does not equal “better”. Get back to your roots and make something that your current audience will buy. Put them above the “new customers” you’re trying to reach. It’s the same error that many companies make nowadays – neglecting the long time customers for some new ones. You end up losing great customers that way.
See, I am a man. There’s an expression stating that men marry women expecting them to be the same, and women marry men expecting that they’ll change. I feel like Microsoft is giving in to the women out there – the ones who complain about it being too hard to use or not pretty enough – and we have enough of that already. I’m not trying to hate on women out there, but maybe the movie Team America explained it best… something about assholes, dicks, and ******* (I won’t go into it, but watch the movie if you need an explanation). What we need is for Microsoft to be a **** again.

I don't doubt that it is just a big marketing gimick, but I wanted to explain that it looks like they are listening to people's ideas - just the wrong ones.
I'm waiting for them to show the ads on TV which make the claim that W7 has fewer clicks so I can report it to the ASA.
Starting a program like solitaire with the mouse is either the same number (if you don't mind a 2 second wait) or one more click than XP/Vista.
As for getting to the network card properties that's a heck of a lot more clicks than Vista or XP.
W7 has some very well thought out features, but unfortunately it's got more that just aren't.
I hate MS for putting me in a position where I have to say I prefer Vista! Damn them! Damn them to Hades!
WM7 looks awful, and the restrictions they're putting on it make no user or business sense.
Office 2007 is appauling, what were they thinking? Why make an application which users have to refer to google in order to complete simple common tasks?
Don't expect a reply, Drunk, at least something that isn't just generically polite and thanking you for your thoughtful input.
You blended good points that resonate with much of their shrinking user base, made up partly by people who have no idea they're running Microsoft and also in part by people who are obsessed with modifying them, with that bit on genitals. They're not interested in us anymore, nor would they want to add a lot of attention to your letter by giving you something from them to paste on and spread around. They want to intercept people from buying the other phones with no regard to who's already buying their own phones, and you can't really blame them considering how fast they're still falling (down 4% last quarter) toward obscurity.
Just to offer myself as an example of others reading what you just posted and what may be on their own minds, considering I made two websites about the damn thing, I'd say I was a bonafide WinMo fanatic, one of the last expected to say adios, but I just did, a Nexus One, and not only will I continue to love and go nuts with it I will attempt to take others with me. It's brewing right here on XDA, the place you'd think would be the haven mainly for people who like to do what can mostly only be done exclusively with WinMo phones.
Actually I read this by mistake, forgot to get rid of all my WinMo rss feeds on Google Reader to which my phone's synced. Good read though, glad you posted it. So thanks.
But no matter how much rabble you rouse here nor what signs you wave in front of their Seattle office you won't stop this train, the general direction of which they've made it clear that they are taking with WP7 being mostly the opposite of what a lot of us want. They can't please everyone and they'd rather please would-otherwise-be customers of their competitors even at the expense of estranging themselves from part of their existing customers. On the bright side, in addition to there being other options (specifically the one I took), they claim they'll keep supporting existing versions of WinMo for at least a while, though not forever on new devices I don't think which will have unique hardware that if I heard correctly won't even have removable storage, not to mention any support for decentralized application distribution. You don't like the sound of what's coming but what's coming is in their opinion good for business and I suppose mine too. When you're already failing at this rate in such a critical time of penetrating a huge market with enormous potential that will be realized further and further every day, it's hard to come up with a dumb idea on how to do things differently. Not to mention I've seen quite a few extremists shrug off each new bit of bad news saying Whatever I'll still try it, and once they do, then Microsoft has got them for at least a long enough period of time to figure out how to keep them hooked while they intercept little bits of business from the others. Right now they're handing business away. It's a joke.
Making sure the likes of you and others on sites like XDA remain happy customers as they implement these drastic changes to their mobile operations is not high up on their to do list.

Can't say I don't agree with you on most of that. I honestly don't expect much of a reply... at most a blanket letter or something like that. I've also been working my way to other vendors. I've got some android variant on my TP2 now and Ubuntu on my laptop (both still dual boots, but it's a step that direction). I just didn't want it all to happen without my 2 cents' worth being thrown at them.

Facebook isn't much different. Does seem odd to me that Google seems to scream freedom & liberty to it's competitors about their data but wont let people freely use Google products as they so desire. in fact, the above poster is right, a few months back did apple not say they were using the GPS coordinates in the iPhones to track location data? (which makes sense from a marketing stand point, they could see how many people actually used iPhones in different regions (i know some people who just bought one and never use it, just for the sake "oh, yeah, i own one" yeah, you bought a 700 dollar peice of technology and never touched it, smart.]

Hi guys. I'm starting this thread in hopes of sparking a conversation and a concerted effort to rid ourselves as users from the clutches of Google and other big tech companies. I am sick and tired of Google tracking me and attempting to force feed me ads on a daily send constant basis. Then selling my info to other companies such as Facebook. So, I have started down the path of decluttering (De-Google-ing) my device(s). I am primarily interested in securing my device as much as possible and protecting my privacy.
So far, I have reformatted my entire device to factory default settings installed and using F-Droid (FOSS) for all my apps. I use Yandex as my search engine (I am often to suggestions and recommendations) in the "private browser" app. I use Aurora instead of Google Play store, New Pipe for YouTube-ing, Frost for Facebookingand SlimSocial for Twitter. I have stopped using Google keyboard and any other Google apps. I have abandoned gmail and replaced it with proton mail instead. So far, no ads and as far as I can tell, no tracking. I have also installed a VPN and am using it religiously—Cyber Ghost, a $99 for 3 years subscription with support up to 8 devices.
However, I am still very much connected to Samsung for I am not privy as to whether or not Samsung is as sinister as Google and Facebook.
Again, I am open to all suggestions, corrections and recommendations. Thank you and I hope to engage with you all.

but seriously. the most dangerous thing you can do is acctualy think that the steps you take are really making your life private.
vpns just channel the traffic to an other end point and does the queries for you then sends the data encrypted to you.
the queries are still made on the www. account info and all things you store or access online is still accessible by the www. vpn companies just fool you into thinking that the data being relayed to you is the only weak link. plus the free ones mine your data.
best thing you can do is not use social media. its made to invade your privacy. its designed to fool you into giving as much of your personal life info as possible and sell your habits to add companies so they can in turn send you quatered adds.
the minute you use the internet you void your privacy regardless of how you think the measures you take are working or effective. and what are you going to do about the 100 and 1000's of companies being hacked and their data mined and sold every month? you cant do anything about that. plus its much better for hackers to get their info from a big company because you get much more than just 1 dude that does his banking online and chat every now and then.there is no money to be made from 1 individual.
if you think people are specifically after you, you are gravely being fooled by the vpn ad campaigns that have been poping up everywhere about "privacy".( they must hide the fact that they also get hacked very well.its just that the media hasint picked up on it yet)
anyways who want to waste time on an end user/device?

all in all I've abandoned the thought of real privacy. its futile.( even abstinents dosen't work because companies and governments don't secure customer data correctly. and unfortunately if you are born, you must be branded and labeled and filed away.)

the whole infrastructure relies on them companies and the habits we have been embraining ourselves and our children with is the problem.. we live our lives intertwined with the services and devices that we take for granted and have clicked next next next through polices and consent forms for over 25 years now whithout even giving it a second though. we're in over our heads now and it is a little late to back out. this was al dine by design and all voluntarily. its crazy how marketing is evil.
a cabin in the woods is the easiest and most secure thing one can do. anything shy of that is a waste of time and a false feeling of privacy.
anyways I'm going around in circles now.
one thing for sure is that the criminals we think that we need cover from are not who we think they are.
they are the FCC dealing with big telcos, they are the big media giants spewing false information and fabricates facts. they are in our governments in the highest ranks pushing hidden agendas and most of all they are the big social media platforms remodeling our society each day under our noses at our expense.
but hey this is not new. the internet police is just tring to make you think it is and spend 9.99$ a month for a vpn lol

Nonetheless, what are some good and viable alternatives to Google and optimally "securing" one's device (taking everything bober10113 has said).

Like the other poster said, I gave up on worrying about privacy. I made the switch for other reasons and privacy was down on the list...
I just do not like what Goolge has been doing lately, especially blocking ad blockers soon in Chrome so I switched to MS Edge on Android and the Chromium version of Edge for desktop and the rest of the apps just followed through. I am seeing how the switch works for myself and if all goes well I will switch back to MS for the small company I work for.
I gave up on Gmail, Google Drive and all their office apps so far and I stopped using Nexus/Pixel phones for the first time in 10 years. I started with the S9+ which I enjoyed for a couple of months and then got a Note9 during a holiday special and now I cannot wait for the Note10.
Privacy is what it is nowadays... We should all own our data and if we choose to let be used as companies are doing now then we should get a slice of all the money being made but I doubt it will ever get to be something like that.

I wouldn't think that they are any better than Google's. Majority of the companies out there that are international had to adhere to the EU rules of privacy, so a lot of them have adopted those standards. NOT ALL OF THEM. That's why all of a sudden you are getting new agreements from all the major companies that touch each section of land on the world.
I still don't trust any of them even to that point.
This is morbid. I have been thinking a lot more about death, debt, privacy and such, and I have come to the conclusion that I honestly don't care about my own anymore because it has been stolen, including my wife's. Future children though, I worry about them because you don't even have to mention their name on the internet and somehow every major company knows about them.
Ever had a conversation with someone without actually looking something up on the web, and then a day or two later Google and other ads start showing things concerning what you were talking about to someone in person? Yeah, it has happened to me numerous times now I can't even count anymore.

YES!!! I noticed this a few months ago. My wife and I were talking about some random subject and BAM there it was in my Google discovery feed.
I mentioned that to her and she thought I was crazy until it happened again.
My friend was over last week, he mentioned something about a car he is fixing up and once again in my Google feed...

I am not going to go as far as saying they are listening because my wife did say she looked up what we were talking about later on that day on her phone so I am guessing it is more GPS based then Google listening to give them the benefit of doubt for now. I need to ask my friend if he searched anything while here...
You want to De-Google your phone? Sell it and don't get an Android phone. Don't get an iPhone, either. In fact, get one of those huge car phones from the 80s. I can't add really anything that hasn't been said, other than some slight humor, but again, if you want privacy, stay off the internet.

This is what I'm trying to prevent. Exactly the same thing had happened to me. We were simply discussing an AC unit; never looked it up or mentioned the name of it and the exact make and model in the room we were in showed up.

Yeah it's super duper creepy. Funny thing is since I refreshed my Note 9 up to PIE, I haven't given assistant or google search any permission to use my microphone and I don't even have them setup!
