Argh So annoying..please help - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey people,
Ive been looking at this forum for a week solid for a fix but cant find one for my phone.
I have a tytn 2 and have been trying to get the gps to work on it, i know all about the wm 6.1 issue and this lead me to try all possable fixs like changin ROM and Radio to every combination i can think of.
Ive also tried using GPS test and still no luck, sometimes i get a sat blip up on gpstest but there is no strength in the bar and i either stays like that or disappears. Also in GPSTest it is forever saying GPS starting up and doesnt change from that, ive even had it on that for over 3 hours.
Im getting really frustrated lol as most of us are i see on here, but if anyone can help me it would be a huge help =]
Thanks Guys,

WM6.1 f*cked up my GPS

Hi,
I've updated my kaiser with the original wm6.1 update from htc.
Since then it takes forever to get a fix. Once i have one the signal is as strong as before.
It takes over 10 min to get a fix if i even get one at all...
I use TomTom v6 (032.8351) as navigator using the build-in receiver option.
QuickGPS is always up-to-date so that's not the problem.
Is there a way to test the gps hardware and/or settings?

Same here, does the GPS really use the QuickGPS update? It seems it uses really old definitions or something. Does a custom baked ROM, like a Dutty rom, fix this prob?
Has either one of you disabled AGPS (Assissted GPS)?
Yes, it is disabled here.

Did u ever use app like gpstest or gpstool? they are very helpfull in "kicking up" the gps signal.
Where can i get this?

gpstest is a freeware, u can get it in P1Taters "storage", he has got it in his signature(its in cabs/a must for me).
Or try to google it.
AGPS is quite different, it's disabled by default in most ROMs including the new 6.1 update, no surprise there.
QuickGPS is separate and should be working, and indeed appears to be working just fine, but for whatever reason the data is collects just isn't being used by the GPS in 6.1 ROMs. This has been discussed here at length (search for "hopeless GPS") and there's no solution in sight. Some claim not to have the problem, for others it's all too obvious. We can all get quick fixes from time to time, but the consistent reliability from the old 6.0 ROMs is completely gone in 6.1.
Every registry tweak, "GPS test" and radio change suggested here has proven to be a placebo so far - I'm just waiting (forever, probably) for a patch from HTC.
The same problem is also mentioned in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397728 I hope that someone will find a solution...
Sorry guys, but after sofreset I get first fix after 1-2 minutes and after that when I launch iGO I get a fix after some seconds(10-20).

For you maybe. Mine seems to work flawless. Every time I try, it works.
BTW, AGPS is not always disabled. Yes it is different but it might be interfering with the GPS software. It did in one of Dutty's roms i beta tested for him.
@ everyone else. Here is some cabs that might help speed up GPS Locks. Keyword is "might".

Congratulations?
I can sometimes get first fix after 1-2 minutes, the problem is that other times (seemingly at random) it can be 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Without properly functioning QuickGPS, it's basically luck of the draw.
Once you've had a lock, the data is retained for some hours (unless you reset) so subsequent fixes will usually be fairly instanteneous, even for me. None of this really helps.
Like I said before, some people claim not to have the problem, some of them may even be right, but unfortunately for others the problem definitely exists, and nobody's put their finger on the cause.

Keyword is "placebo". Running a different GPS app before the actual GPS app you want to use doesn't actually speed anything up, it just makes it seem like you're "doing something". All software like GPS Test does is open a port to your GPS and try to get a fix - do you think TomTom doesn't do that already?

So, those that don't have the issue are liars? Good luck figuring it out. I don't feel like having this argument on whether or not mine is working. Childish in my opinion, so I'll just move on. I believe it's quite ignorant to insult those that have tried to help whether by posting cabs or possible advice
@ everyone else, I posted some links to some cabs that might help or might not. I hope they do help those that indeed need it and not those that just want to complain. Good luck.

Yes of course, they're damned dirty liars, all of them.
Or they've misunderstood the problem.
Or they've just tried their GPS for the first time in weeks and gotten a reasonably quick fix, just like any of us (myself included) could have done on any random occasion (consistency is the key in this).
Or they're running a completely different ROM/Radio and haven't really been paying attention (that wouldn't be you would it?)
Point is, I'd strongly encourage anyone genuinely experiencing this problem not to bother even reading this thread, just get onto HTC for a fix. All the potions and pills being suggested here are a waste of time; they've all been tried, and they don't work.

Bully for you. I believe it's quite ignorant (not to mention bloody irritating) to come onto a thread about a problem you've obviously not experienced, and try to suggest that problem doesn't exist, or that we won't have already tried all the most blindingly obvious fixes for it. But ce la vie.

Yup, that's me. I ignored all issues reported and used a different rom/radio combination to try and fix the issue. Oops. BTW, I never once stated the problem did not exist, as I know it does for some. You stated those that say they are not experiencing the problem are mistaken.
All I can say is that my combination is working for me. I use GPS at least 3 times a week and I always get a fix in under 20 sec. Dutty's June 8 rom and radio 1.58.25.17. Yes, this rom does have issues, but the issue's that it does have do not pertain to me as I dont use the apps that the issues involve.
OMG, this thread is going in the other direction that was supposed.
U try to help him and u get a slap in the face instead of simple THANK YOU.
Nice attitude man.
I know, jeez, isn't it? Crikey. Just goes to show. Who'd have thought it.
Anyway, if you've updated your HTC Tytn II to the new WM 6.1 update, and have been experiencing erratic GPS performance ever since, please do contact HTC Support at their website (www.htc.com) and register a bug report there. That's the only way we're all going to get a fix. Thanks!

You get a fix in less than 20 seconds after a cold start of Gps? This is exactly the problem i'm dealing with WM6.1 roms. I can't get a fix in less than 2 minutes (cold start) and i have tried many 6.1 roms and many radios. In WM6 roms i get a fix in less than 20 seconds. Can you please tell me which rom do you have installed in your Kaiser? Thank you
Edit: Please give me a link for this rom you are using. Thank you
Thanks for the tips.
I'll try the tools, see if that dous anything good, otherwise i'll send a verry irritated e-mail to htc.
Btw, has anyone tried other navigation software like iGo, MioMap or Destinator?
Same problems?
And if there is no way to fix it for now, is it possible to downgrade to the original WM6?
A hard reset won't bring it back to WM6 i gues?

hey WM6.1 GPS users...

what have you done about your crippled GPS? flash a few radios and then bare with the horrible fix times, or have you actually found a way to fix this? I wanna know how many people on this forum put up with crippled GPS.
I personally chose the option of putting up with the crippled GPS, ive tried to fix it but haven't found anything. Assisted GPS freezes so i have to leave it turned off. Today when i actually needed it and realized it took more than 5 minutes to get a fix, that really annoyed me..
not sure how i rank with those 2 options but i just keep my quickgps updated and then run GPStest get a fix before then start igo8 and fix time havent been too bad...been using the radio in my sig
edit: i have agps turned off via advancedconfig

hm...but even then that would be considered "crippled" gps. you still need to jump through hoops just to get it to work right. and you have to have the right radio...i remember when there was no wm6.1, no matter what i would flash to, i never had to switch radios, my gps just connected instantly. no jumping through hoops.
i would say your option is that you "put up with your crippled GPS" but that is just my opinion.
One of the lucky guys i guess... No problems with GPS after the 6.1 update. I use a stock ROM and Radio (in my sig) and i use Destinator 7 for GPS. Takes me about 2 mins to get a fix and GPS runs smoothly. QuickGPS get updated when i connect via USB...
dont use GPS on my TYTN II, i have a standard Kaiser for that
Well
My GPS is going fine from the start till now. I've flashed many roms and many many radios. My GPS was working everytime with various things. I get a fix in 1-2 minutes. 3 is really max awaiting time. I'm using A-GPS without any problems.
ROM&Radio as in my signature.
Cheers,
Chris
Hey guys, 1-2 or 3 minutes is not considered as quick gps fix Have in mind that gps fix was about 15-20 seconds in WM6 roms

I must try it today once again after soft reset, and i will post my results as i get back to home. But its quite good for me.
I get a fix in about 90 seconds using TomTom or iNav. But if I use GPS Test, then the fix time drops to like 30 seconds.
I'm currently running Death v4.1 and the 1.58.25.27 Niki radio.
alright, ive made the test.
42 seconds in GPSTest, 59 in my AutoMap5 and 62 in GarminMobileXt. posting from Kaiser outdoors.
Cheers,
Chris
Rom: Hyperdragon IIIs
Radio: 1.65.20.29
QuickGPS regularly updates
AGPS turned on
GPSTest fixes in about 30 seconds
Tomtom 7 fixes in about 45 seconds; instant if GPSTest was started first
so... no, I don't feel my gps is crippled at all.
If 'attempted to fix it' includes emailing HTC (and only getting the automated response saying they received the message) and phoning HTC twice about it, I guess I fit into the second group. I've not strayed from HTC supplied firmware at any stage and don't want to. It's their responsibility to fix it, not mine and if they can't they should get Qualcom to update the chipset drivers/radio for them to fix it.
I wasn't happy with my sync time in 6.1 with the radio that I had (i.64.xx.xx) and i just flashed 1.58.25.17 on my phone and it synced in 1:30-2 mins fro ma cold start outside (needed a reason to walk away from the cube). good enough for me.
Mass/AT&T/Death 4.1
2-3 minutes doesnt seem like a good time to me...especially when there was once a time it could get a fix within 5-25 seconds.
I have heard good things about the stock roms, and i ALMOST upgraded to it, but then i remember they aren't as fast as some of our cooked roms here on the forum, and the fact that stock roms are loaded with a bunch of crap and have less memory.
I'm gonna knock on wood before and after I type this:
*knock on wood*
Since using Tomtom v7 extracted from Diamond, my Tilt has not disappointed me with initial GPS fix.

the problems people are experiencing and the seeming lack of issues for other people with the same ROMS must have something to do with the Kaiser variants people are using. I can think of no other reason why I can have the same ROM, radio and SPL as someone else and yet cannot get a fix, while they can. I have an Orange branded TyTn 2 from the UK. I am currently using the Dutty Diamond V1, hard spl 3.29 and the 1.65 radio that comes with the diamond ROM. I believe my Kaiser model number is KAI130. Does anyone else have the same model and ROM etc as me and is able to get a fix?
Ive tried 5 different ROMs and umpteen radio, disabling and enabling A-gps - even installing different quick GPS cabs. No luck.
I never had any problems like this on my N95, and everyone criticise its GPS!
hi,
i use now last updated htc rom in french (wm6.1) with tomtom 6.0 and quickgps V1.0 from htc.
Effectively, it takes now more time (1..3 minutes) than before (few seconds, under wm6.0) to get a fix, but it works has before.
Seem that the fix takes now much more time...
May be you are right, wm6.1 has somthing to do wuth t is problem.
Best regards,

I have an AT&T Tilt, I live in the US.
I'm using Radio 1.64.06.04
Im using Dutty's WM6.1 4/29 Rom
I have the Qualcomm 7200 chip (not 7201)
My Kaiser's Model Number is KAIS160.
Now that i think about it, i cant confirm this kaiser ever had a good GPS fix, being that this is my 2nd kaiser, my first one broke, and this one is the free replacement. hm...
The poll results are really surprising me, at least half the people's GPS is fine for them. I would upgrade to anything newer than dutty's 4/29 but most diamond builds dont support direct draw, i cant play quake, quake 2, or duke nukem. most other games or apps that use direct draw don't work either. i still have to try hyperdragon 6/24 build and L26_Kaiser Diamond 6/25. Does anyone know if GPS AND direct draw are working on these roms?
Indeed I miss the fast fixes from 6.0 ROMs. Within 20 seconds I would already have a fix from a cold start. Now it takes up to 3 minutes, its reaaally annoying. In fact, I also found it strange that half of the people here were not complaining about their GPS's. More than once I needed those fast fixes and had to wait for 2 minutes or so, and had to stop at dangerous eek:) places waiting for it. I tried different solutions but none of them seemed to work. And I really don't feel like going back to 6.0 ROMs so..

Problems with Diamond's GPS

Hi guys..
i think i need some help here.. iv had quite a few HTC phones ever since they came out soo know my way around the software somewhat good
but, my new Diamond is the first iv had with buildin GPS .. but it seems like there is a problem with mine.. even thou in tomtom7 it can see the sat's and gives a "connection/detection bar" on the sat overlook page in tomtom they stay grey (not rly connected) (connected sats are blue)
and when im outside it connects now and then but disconnects from the sats more or less same sec :S and after 1-3min it get a connection again and gets cut off again as before, and so on...
iv tryed once - where it seemed to get an connection it could hold. and there it worked great even indoor.. but after shutting tomtom down and letting it rest for a bit i was back to the old problem... which is kinda fustrating..
any bright ideas?
i tryed making a vitual port with GPSGate but thats the same..
cant seem to find anywhere in the settings of WM where i can do anything about the GPS..
PFW//
did you try hardreset ?
if not
backup your files and hardreset!
It seems that this issue comes from the A-GPS setting in Diamond Tweak.
Did you install this software?
Otherwise, try to use QuickGPS and download latest info.
On mine, this resolved the issue.
Nevermind, browser crash and beaten by Phoenix with the answer
well havent tryed hardreset yet - keeping that as last way out.. would suck having to reinstall everything..
as far as i know i havent installed diamond tweak, and iv run quickgps 500 times to try and resolve it.. only thing i can think of it might have been if that i ran quick gps just when i got the handset, but dident notice my date and time was set incorrect.. not sure if that could have done anything.. but thats my best guess..
Right... dont ask why.. but just for the fun of it, even tho iv done it 500 times before i just tryed running quickgps (again again) ... and bob's-ur-uncle it works..
freaky.. wierd handset.. not like its not getting enough attention lol
anyways.. thx for the help !
i blame the fact that its a Microsoft based thing lol..
cheers guys
i have the same problem, i run tt7, gps connection show 4/5 satellites log in, but the tt7 remain grey. This situation is for 3/4 minutes and only after this time the tt7 goes on and color.
Which is the problem?

yea its wierd.. but dont quite know what it was that made mine work again.. i had my wifi turned on and ran the QuickGPS and kept the wifi going while starting and running tt7, and i stept outside, and it got connected like 3 sec after i wentoutside and held the connection which is great
but cant figgur out why it worked this time.. iv updated QuickGPS loads of times to see it that would help.. only thing i (think) i did different that time was the wifi was still on..
tho i have to add, unless your house is made of cardboard its not that great inside.. soo give it a try outside to give it the best chance of finding a connection =)
PS: Still works today.. takes 2 sec to get a connection under open sky
Possible solution
Had the same problem. Just disable A-gps (with Advanced Config from Schap) and everything works fine. It seems that A-gps is not (correctly) supported by all providers.
Good luck.

Disabled it again, and the GPS now works perfectly
Soo i am 99,9% certain that this is whats making problems with our GPS (thx Atsee)
Thanks, this tip just saved my day.

thanks.
..but now i have a second problem: i mark POI for show it on map, but they don't appear on map when tt7 is running. How i can see those on map?

GPS 'Hardware' on the Tilt

hi Guys,
i have been scouring the site and i have found lots of info on getting a quick fix on the GPS and which radios work best, i have downloaded lots of radios, tried different roms but no matter what i try, I cant get a fix PERIOD. i have also googled to try and find out if the GPS itself is a replaceable part on the tilt but no info seems to be available, having said that I would definately appreciate any input, i have tried stuff like GPSgate, GPSproxy, HTC GPS tool, GPSTest, VisualGPSce, QuickGPS, QuickPosition and NONE of those tools has shown me what a GPS fix looks like, I have seen up to 8 satellites on the HTC tool, they show up and dance around for about 1 or 2 minutes and then dissapear never to be seen again until after a reboot of the phone.
i have also borrowed a friends Tilt, and placed them side by side, and watched his phone get a fix in about 1 minute, and then stuck around for about 20 more minutes and then finally end the test in frustration.
is the GPS a replaceable part?
any input would be greatly appreciated
Phone: AT&T branded TILT

My advice to you would be to just keep trying to find a radio ROM that works for you. I recently got a Tilt, and I flashed some odd 5 or 6 radios before I found one that enabled WiFi and GPS for me. Ironically, its the one you are currently using xD.

No but the antenna sticker (with fragile embedded tracks) is. That said, you mentioned you still get greyed out satelite details showing and changing in your nav software so that may not be an issue (you've not mentioned if this sticker above the battery bay has been disturbed at all). If you are worried about whether your new setup has contributed to the problem, the answer is simple, was it working OK before you changed the ROM/Radio or SPL from original WM 6.0?
Oh and welcome to the forum illspamu - I hope you don't live up to your name

I am a total newb to this, so this info about the antena is something i need to check, it is worth mentioning that i did buy this tilt with a broken screen so someone probably used it for a hockey puck, its been a great phone minus the GPS but I recently became demanding and want to see it working.
the GPS has never worked beyond showing me some satelites for a couple of minutes and its been the same regardless of ROM/Radio.
