Interesting, but I'm positive instead of upgrading the diamond, most people will just buy the new HTC (Probably a Touch) with WM7.
WM7 will be released at the beginning of 2009. Porbably announced earlier.
It is very likely that the Touch Diamond can run wm7 without problems. But nobody can tell you now...
Since HTC is planning for a WM7 device, they will not offer WM7 as a free upgrade for the TouchDiamond. If enough people buy the touch diamond they might offer this update for some money. Else we have to hope for some good "cooking" from the developers here in the forum...
very likely based on what?
If it's as much of an overhaul as Microsoft are saying it will be, then I'd say not supported. Will probably need a better touch screen.
Rory
withouth support for hardware features like
accelorometer and multitouch it would prob
be a kinda poor experience if it does

Good question
That's why I said: Very likely...
You might as well ask: What might WM7 change that makes it very unlikely that the Touch Diamond will not be albe to run it...
I asked HTC about the Diamond2 WM7 upgrade and they answered this:
"At the moment windows mobile 7 is unknown at this time. I can not give you the exact date when it will release. But I know that there will be a new upgrade will be available soon."
So is this good or bad?
Windows Mobile 7 has high requirements... check out http://www.intomobile.com/2009/05/12/microsoft-pink-specs-windows-mobile-7-requirements-leak.html. The Diamond's 192MB ROM isn't even close to the 512MB required. Although, when it comes out, I have a feeling that our hackers will debloat it and make it run.
But it won't be official, that's for sure.

i have see on youtube many videos with diamond and Winmo7 but its very slow at this time but its work!
You will have winmo7 on your Diamond than wait its nut funny at this time
Here are 2 Videos. The first Video i think thats real its slow but the last Video is so fast i think thats a fake :S
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cv85Z2O5jk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm7UZ71uQHs&feature=related
the second video is an APP runs on WM6.5 it's name is THE HOST and it is in 1.5 version now. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685928
As mentioned earlier the requirements are not close enough to W7p, and if you have run xdandroid, the performance is okay but not there yet.
I have seen W7p theme for android, I have tried it and it seems pretty cool
Examples:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8119626#post8119626
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864034
That first video looks amazing. Although I didn't expect WP7 to run sooo slowly.

I think we might be able to install a windows 7 rom on Diamond altough it might not function properly because WM7 needs a lot more RAM and processing speed compared to WM6.1 and 6.5.
BIG BRAINS Reply
The real question is, why would you want to run such crippled software on such nice hardware? Windows Mobile 7 is five huge steps back from real Windows Mobile.

I will work like crap.
A HTC Diamond barely manages to run a W6.5...It does run , but very slow and annoying.
Would`nt recommend going W7 on a Diamond , unless you have nerves of steel ^^

Nope. Nobody bothered to port it over because it would be completely pointless. Whats in it for you to downgrade anyway?

i think ive narrowed it to n95 or touch diamond
i just hate the 4 gig un expandable memory in the touch diamond and does anyone kno the video recording resolution
No Offense, but what does this have to do with the Kaiser.
Maybe better off in the General General you'll get better answers then the ones you'd get from the Kaiser Fan boys!
oh yeah well im currently a kaiser user have been since jan, i deff want a new phone but which way do i turn
to be honest im a fanboy myself i just want input

I've wanted to play with a n95 for some time now...
n96 in q2-q3 '08 as well...
or, as what I will probably end up doing, wait for nokia to release a touch smartphone....
i answered the kaiser relation question
and the n95 has a better camera and storage
Nokia means no XDA-devs anymore... And you wouldn't want to miss this fine community eh?
Maybe some member will release a cab to increase the memory size... I'm still waiting for the FM-radio, watercraft, lightsaber,... cabs.
Touch Pro could solve your problem...
my vote goes to the n95 for now.i was always a htc fan up until the driver issues and no touchflo 3d.even though the diamond has these i dont like the size and shape plus of the storage issue
well xda devs rocks so there is that.
i dont think the touch pro is coming to orange uk

just to make you on the same page, xda doesn't make devices. the 2 phones mentioned are made by htc and the other by nokia
i meant xda developers not xda devices, i kno there made by htc, its written on my phone
n95!
it's one of the fastest phones out there!
great camera, lots of memory, there are tons of 3rd party apps for symbian, you can play GBA at full speed. it's an awesome phone!
while the touch diamond on the other hand has a qualcomm processor...big epic fail...and every phone with a qualcomm processor will be an epic fail until they start using Xscale again.
i agree with what dude said about no xda, ur gonna miss it!
i mean its a windows ppc, the mod possibilites are endless, IMO
the n95 is sweet to look at, and the functions are awesome, plus the camera is f'n nasty!
but ur really considering leaving HTC ?
why get a divorce so soon?
no u misunderstand im not selling my tytn 2, i love htc devices. besides i use internet sharing something you dont get on nokias. i think.
ill prob switch tween kaiser and my upgrade as ive got 8 gb in kaiser
As far a what your needs are there are a lot of differences between the n95 and XDA, so you have to ask yourself what do I need from a mobile device.
I am in a similar situation, I am approaching the end of my contract and looking at upgrading from my SE k800i to the kaiser. I am however going to wait gor the touch pro to come out and see what that has to offer,
perhaps that is an option for you?
Marc
I wouldn't consider any of the 2 mentioned phones. If I was to change my Kaiser, it would be for the same category, say the upcoming Touch Pro. I want the keyboard and MicroSD slot.
First of all, why the rush to upgrade, it's not like your using a Razr. Have you seen the upcoming 2009 devices? Check out Nvidia's integrated Htc Apx device for one. Thanks to the Iphone, company's are gonna start to roll out some serious hardware evolutions next year, I'd hold on if I were you http://www.nvidia.com/object/apx_2500.html
You make it seem like money's an issue with him. he got the kaiser in January, and is looking for a new toy in july...by the time he is bored again, it'll be 2009 Q1 tech, and then q3 2009 tech.
actually its is. these are free upgrades thats why i cant just get the touch pro on o2
Personally I wouldn't bother with either, okay it's a free upgrade either way but why waste it, and not be able to upgrade to something decent a few months down the line?
The N95 is quite old now, and (in my eyes) a pretty horrible piece of work. I can't stand the S60 interface, I'm not bothered about the camera (which is still only a phone camera after all), there's no way I'd choose it over my kaiser (and yes I know you're not losing the kaiser, but you can still only carry one phone at once, at least if you're sensible).
The Touch Diamond, by all accounts, isn't finished yet. It doesn't really work the way it should, the battery life makes the kaiser look good, and it's just going to frustrate you.
My advice - just wait. Take up the offer of an upgrade when there's something you actually, definitely want out there.
I've been google'n for 2 days and haven't been able to find anything worthy of an upgrade from a Kaiser ..
My mom needs a pda/phone and she wants my trusty Kaiser, but unless I find something worth having she's not getting it.
The Touch HD looks fantastic .. but .. isn't coming to the US [email protected]#[email protected]
Anybody know of something coming soon, available now I should be looking at ?
ATT Fuse doesn't look like any kind of an upgrade.
Thanks for your comments !
What I use the Kaiser for :
#1 Web Browsing
#2 VPN via PPTP to work network, and telnet to a as/400 machine from there
#3 Handful of WinMO apps that I use for various things (weather, poker blind timers, etc)
I occasionally talk on the phone too
hey man AT&T Fuze, it's called the Raphael on these forums, it's a sexy phone and has Opera 9.5 built in. and it can do everything the Tilt does minus some buttons and has a G-sensor
-Mike
Next to the KAISER I had the MWg ZINC II for a while. It had an incredible performance, much better than on the TYTN. However, there are 2 things I couldn't stand on that thing: no hardware softkeys underneath the screen and a weird keyboard with strangely arranged characters. Other than that it was a great device. I still would have gotten used to its keyboard but I couldn't stand the fact that it did not have any HW softkeys underneath the screen.
However, even though this seems to be an interesting question, I do believe that this thread is misplaced since you ask for something "that is not the KAISER"!
It might have been better placed in the GENERAL BOARD?

I guess I could run over to ATT and look at one. It just doesn't look all that appealing at first glance. I see nothing on it other than a VGA screen vs the tilt, and I'm losing the "tilt" function that I've grown to enjoy.
I don't think I'll ever use a G-Sensor for anything. I have opera 9.5 on the Tilt.
Maybe I'll like it better in-person.

I'm looking for opinions from current kaiser owners since they'll know what I'm replacing. I want something better than a kaiser. Only a kaiser owner would know what that is.
I never use my softkeys so I don't think losing them would be an issue.
I guess the Fuze might be an option but the screen on that thing looks smaller than a fuze. I want a BIGGER screen
Well, I upgraded from an 8525 to the Fuze, and am throughly dissapointed.
The screen is awesome, amount of memory is awesome, and the keyboard is awesome.
Everything else sucks. The hardware buttons at the bottom are extremely spotty. If you don't press the perfect spot, with the perfect amount of pressure, the device presses the wrong button for you.
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446246&highlight=hardware+buttons
I flashed to the Elite ROM, and that made things a little better in general, but the usability of the device is getting me down.
So I'm off to research the Tilt/Kaiser.
I looked for what's the next upgrade after the Tilt/Kaiser but didn't find anything worthy. I think much of this stems from just how significant the upgrade the Tilt/Kaiser was from it's previous models, the 8525 and 8125.
I looked at the Fuze but while it does have some additional features and speed, it's not the leap ahead that the Tilt/Kaiser was. The Touch HD which you already found is the only thing I also found that I'd consider a worthy successor. I thought of buying one and having it imported but from everything I read the radio won't work here in the USA.
So for now and the foreseeable future, I'm still on my Tilt.

I think the radio works fine here, you just don't get 3G.
I'm not in a 3G area, so maybe I could overlook that. It seems like I tend to turn OFF 3G on those rare occasions when I am since it sucks the battery down so bad.
Touch HD looks very nice but maaaaaaaaan it's pricey !

I think the hardware for a G1 looks good, too bad it's running android and not winmo.
It's got everything I want. Nice display size, hardware keyboard, 3G support
Nobody took a look at the Touch Pro(Raphael) or Sony X1 ?
Touch Pro is the Fuze, which was mentioned in the first post.
Racer i would look in the Raphael Forum and see if the problems/complaints are going to affect you terribly, from what i gather i'll be happy with the upgrade.
Best of luck!

Not really much, if any, of an upgrade.
Sony X1 might be possible, but it's SOOOO darned expensive !
Another option would be an unlocked Palm Treo Pro.... runs win 6.1, decent phone, same specs as the tilt I believe

I'm returning mine as well. The D-pad is useless when surfing the net, the keyboard is really cramped compared to the Tilt, and button placement very odd.
The screen is amazing and the amount of RAM phenomenal, but it isn't quite as fast as I'd hope for and there just aren't enough programmable buttons to make it useful for me.
When my ETEN Glowfiish M700 died I spent weeks debating -- do I spend $600 for a new Tytn II or do I go for broke and get a Touch Pro for $900?
In the end, while the features of the Pro sounded very nice, I decided I just better save some money and get the kaiser.
Very impressed with the Kaiser so far. Video slowness not-withstanding it is still much more responsive than the Eten. And there is certainly tons of help, software recommendations and more available on these very forums
I recently came into a little extra money, so I could get the Pro now if I wanted to. But I'm going to keep the Kaiser and wait to see what the WM7 machines look like next year -- or should I say in two years
Perfectly happy with my Fuze. TF3D, VGA screen, abundant storage room, extremely fast and responsive, absolutely love the hardware KB (many more buttons without having to press the FN key) and more. Suffice it to say, I am extremely happy with my Fuze. Very much so.

Tilt. Which I still have as a backup. Especially after my OIL fiasco.
EDIT:
Let me do say that the stock rom sucks. It is extremely slow and constantly lagging behind. I've flashed a new BlackStone radio and a custom rom and I absolutely love it. But let me emphasize, in the store, the Fuze is slow at best. It even has a ATT tab with all of their bloatware locked to that tab. However, NATF has already done a stock rom fixing most, if not all of the slow/laggy responsiveness. I have literally flashed every single rom already cooked for the Raphael/Fuze and found my favorite (today). This thing flies.

I agree, i'm completely satisfied with my upgrade to the fuze as well.
I think this is a big shame for such a big community to not have xperia panel working on HD. Almost a year passed and still there is no successful rom.
Nowadays we should use something like "[ROM] [July20] [Celestial SExperia Ultimate v3.2] [All panels working perfectly and smooth, very verf fast and stable!!!]. But we don't.
I think most people will glad to see something entirely new on their phone instead updating same thing. Likewise, it could be fun for the developers.
And i am ready to support.. Since i am not a coder, i can only donate.
Anyway.. What do you say guys??

I agree with you celestial123!!
Come on guys you are all great developers.
some developers are already working on it but it wouldn't be easy.
As the X1 panel has many things hardcode into the programme. unlike HTC, they are from the same manufacturer and the compatibility is better (HTC wants to reuse code on most of its phone).
p.s. I know X1 is made by HTC.. but the software isn't.
my friend has a x1, he told me the panels ist good as toucflo, he uses a rom with tflo.. but i d like to test the panels....
it comes down to personal preferences. Manila is just fine for me, looking forward to a proper working M2.5.
itje started a project on that a while back, I have not seen any progress in quite a while now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=465547
I think the Chefs are doing their job perfectly, testing out manila 2.5 for us, and giving us a taste of it. I think they should stay on the road they are travelling, I would prefer manila 2.5 over panels.
I really agree with OnlinePredator
I think X-panel can give us a new face to our HTC device
But for me, nothing more complete as a whole package than TF3D, if we look after the functionality.
I prefer TF3D over panel, even Titanium, cause it's all there!
But I'd like to test panel too
To be honest I think Panels on the HD is a waste of time, TF3D is better and is improving all the time. There are some cool little things with the panels like the fish and stuff, but it's all for show.
Panels working really nicely would be a nice little bonus to have a bit of a play with but I think most ROM developers are focused on providing a better and more usable experience for users than HTC provides, panels wouldn't aid this to be honest.
Looking forward we all gonna buy new devices in few months, chiefs included.
Panels or Android on Hd don't have sense. It's already hard to make Manila run the smoothest way...
I would be sooo happy to run these features ! (as I always wanted to ).
But it seems to be almost impossible.
And even if someone reaches it, most of us will be under Android.
So why loosing time on something we won't need ?
If you want my two cents, each chef has the right to do want they want to do. If it appears that the no chef is working on getting the panels onto the HD, it is most likely because of a number of reasons, mainly because they either haven't time or do not want the panels.
I too agree with OnlinePredator. I think the Chefs are doing a great job and I'm looking forward to a stable, smooth manila 2.5 with few bugs.
IMHO I prefer manila 2.5 over the panels and I believe a lot of chef's also have same feelings.
I've been working on getting the panels working for a while.
I used to have an X1, and can fairly convincingly say that the panels are a waste of time for most parts, so I've been playing with them, basically because I can, its been more of an academic exercise than anything..
Now you can quite happily get one or two of the basic panels working, there are even cabs out there that do it, but some of the others (the almost useful ones) such as the last media browser dont work, there are hardcoded calls to some X1 bits, bits that dont seem to work on the HD.
I've resorted to hexediting the dlls to get it working, but when I manage to get one bit sorted another one pops up and causes problems..
I was getting far too frustrated with it, and as others have said manila 2.5 is so much more interesting, that i havent done anything for a while on the panels.
I think one of the reasons we have so many good chefs here, is that HTC has provided us a very poor stock ROM and no aftersales support. We need cooked ROMs which are closed to what we are expecting for.
Panel is just an option.

U mean al those 6.5 roms out there?, think like this, x1 and x2 have the exact same hardware except x2 go accelerometer and some other minor uppgrades, and as far as i know the 6.5 runs so smooth it can possibly go on x2, so if someone dumps the rom from it al the devs will wont have to make those thousands registry tweaks cuz sony ericsson already made em thats why peeps wait on the x2 rom cuz it will be insanly smooth( i hope )

Still the design is plastic and more fragile than a steady metall case the phone is bigger more clumsy and if u have x1 why buy x2 if u can get the same goodies on ur current phone? (finger keyboard v2 is the soloution)
I agree, whats the point in buying a new x1 with a 8mp camera..I don't even use the camera that often and when I do 3mp is sufficient. But thats alot of people's opinions, a friend of mine upgraded a week ago to another X1 and now he's just patiently waiting for the X2 rom to be dumped and to be quite honest I think I will do the same end November since it will save me a huge pay in plus the X1's design is perfect if compared with the X2's cheap plastice look. Gotta love the shiny metal cover. SE should have stuck with HTC, the X1 is my first SE phone that has never broken in it's full 2 years of use. Since HTC is out of the picture I think the cycle will probably start repeating itself again. Not that I'm complaining since the X2 screw up will add another year's life to the X1. SE should have switched to the snapdragon 1ghz cpu and stayed with HTC to create another monster what the X2 could've been. Even the Nokia N900 is copying the Xperia panel interface and just goes to show how much the X1 achieved. And yes after reading this post I written I see what a X1 fanboy I really am..but then again..after using the X1 how can anyone feel differently. I really did expect a bit more from the X2 though. Luckily the X2 rom will probably work out of the box on the X1 so looking forward to that.

I agree, I expected more from the X2, and I really fail to see how SE plans on attracting X1 buyers.
However, I really don't think HTC is the answer to SEs poblems. Honestly, it seems kind of counter intuitive to me when companies use HTC as their OEM, especially these days when it is trying to brand itself. The X1s biggest competitor when it came out was the Touch Pro. I'm sure HTC knew the X1 was a better phone, so what incentive did they have to really allow it to compete with their own devices. That's probably the reason we are missing things like an accelerometer, a 3.2 inch screen, massive launch delays, and probably the reason cheap plastics that crack were used. Its also probably one of the reasons Palm chose not to use HTC for the hardware of the Pre, as it had done in the past with the Treo Pro and others. Foxconn on the other hand doesn't make their own competitor to the X1 that they stand to lose money on. They do however make the iPhone, which is a stunning peice of hardware, so I'm hoping for good things further on down the line a la X3/X10
Hmm, im glad we have x1 lol, and soon we will have x2 in a better case (rom in our x1 for peeps that dont understand)

Hmm now that you mention it, it makes sense that the X1 cracked for no reason at all looking at it in that light. Atleast the hardware remained sturdy. I also looked at the X10 but somehow can't get past the absence of a hardware keyboard and android OS. I love winmo as a OS although a lot of people complain about it. And the best thing about it is that you can keep upgrading it. SE stated that X2 would be able to upgrade to WM7 once it's released which means next year this time my X1 will also be running it. Then there is the HTC interface porting, Starcraft porting ect. Maybe they will bring out a real upgrade for the X1 when WM7 releases. Android is way too limited in my opinion and if you have 1.6 there's no way to flash to 2.0 not to mention no pc porting
iPhone is rather high quality I must admit. We will have to wait and see. I'm actually quite angry at HTC now, since thats probably also the friggen reason my spacebar key cracked in it's first week of use. I have a Foxconn motherboard in my pc and must also admit it's never given me any kind of problem
Personally I am going to buy a HTC HD2 then they start to sell it here in Denmark! Cause I feel that the Xperia X1 lost its charm quickly for me!
