So last night i saw a post on googles own vnc viewer which is coded to work on the g1 and the android emulator.
Well, I forwarded my ports correctly and setup my server accordingly. I am using TightVNC as well as UltraVNC at seperate times.
I am able to establish a connection through all services on my g1, (3g edge and wifi). Only when I arrive on the connection
I am greeted with only a black screen. I switch to mouse control on my g1 by pressing trackball and can see me moving the pc mouse from my g1.
So my connection is working flawlessly but my only error is that i cant see anything on my g1.
Is there a special mirror driver i must install??? somebody please help me for i use remote desktop as a part of everyday life
If your talking about this one -- http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc-viewer/ -- its not Google's by the way. The problem is you either got dual screens or your resolution is just too high, the problem is your running out of memory on the device to show that large of an image. If you read the updates on there though they mention they are fixing this in the next update.
Try to set your resolution lower, the lower the more responsive your connection will be.
On 3g I experience a "lag" when it gets the first screen. On wifi I do not.
How long have you waited at that black screen? (it usually takes like 30 sec over 3g for me)... I use ubuntu and vino as the vnc server on my home PC.
edit: btw, I run 1440x900 resolution...
I compiled the latest git which has the fixes for high resolutions and some others. It's still a little buggy, but I like it better than the official released version.
I had to zip it to attach it (I don't have anywhere I can host currently).
Enjoy!

Never tried it over 3G, mostly just played with it on the home network.. I usually just access through SSH over 3G instead. I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 using the default share desktop/vino also. I have a 19inch & my laptop screen as dual screening and was to impatient to wait and see if it'd even come up. 1440x900 is pretty big, thats what I had on the one screen when I turned it off and it was really slow. If you bring it down to 800x600 then your good, but pretty useless if your actually on the machine at that.
You could try running a virtual machine with a low resolution and leave that running for when you want to remote in.
Thank you very much for the responses. I am ignorant for thinking a early beta vnc viewer wil display my 1900x1200 resolution. Thanks for all the help
This Works
i use tightvnc works great over 3g and wifi this was one of few apps that impressed my heavy fanboy iphone owner to admit "thats pretty cool" lol
I didn't post this on here cause I figured it's a bit low level for this sort of board but I made this for TmoNews & also put it on Android Community:
There are quite a few different ways to control your PC with your G1. Here I will specifically explain only one of the options, Remote Desktop via a VNC server. If this sounds complicated to you, it's really only takes a few minutes (though it can be slightly more complicated if you have a router). There are many tutorials out there for setting up VNC servers that may explain things a bit better than I do but I will focus on getting it working on the G1. Feel free to do a google search to learn about this a bit more in depth.
First, on your PC
1) Download and install UltraVNC. Any VNC software should work but this one is free and works well. http://www.uvnc.com/download/index.html
2) Configure VNC. Now that you've installed UltraVNC, open the server by going to Start, Programs, UltraVNC and click UltraVNC Server
Now right click the eye logo on in the system tray and select admin properties.

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You should now see this screen:
Set a password that you will remember later on. Hit apply when done.
3) Get your IP address. Go to Ipchicken.com. The large number displayed on the screen is your ip number. Either write this down or keep this window open for later reference.
4) If you don't have a router, skip to the G1 steps. If you do have a router, you have one more thing to do. What you need to do is configure the router to open up port 5900. This is the port that VNC and your G1 will communicate through. There are way too many different routers for me to explain the exact steps to take. However, a google search with your router's brand and the keywords port forwarding should come up with the exact steps for you to take. Here is a screenshot of what my port fowarding screen looks like in the hopes that it may help:
Steps on your G1
1) Set your G1 to allow for the installation of non-market app's. If you've done this already, skip to step 2. If you haven't: from the home screen, hit menu, settings, applications. Check off the box next to "Unknown sources."
2) Download and install Android VNC Viewer. http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc-viewer/.
3) Launch androidVNC. You should see this screen:
Put in the ip address you obtained from ipchicken for address and the password you set earlier in VNC server for password and hit connect. In a few moments time, you should see your desktop screen on your G1!
If the app fails to connect, it will cause a force close (it's still not quite finished). If it fails, go back and double check that you've correctly done the previously listed steps. I got this working in under 5 minutes and if you're savvy with this sort of stuff, you should be able to do so as well.
Anyone sees any errors I made in this, please let me know so I can fix them. Hopefully I was clear and correct.

I will try the androidVNC posted in here and see how that works.
This is a compiled version of the r12 update to android-vnc-viewer. It appears to add support for selecting something other than 64 colors at connect time if your VNC server does not support that. There are some other small changes as well.
There still isn't a binary later than the 2008-12-05 release so I am providing it here so everyone can benefit from the latest code. I've been using it to connect to UltraVNC servers at work through an OpenVPN tunnel (woot @ openvpn) and at home to an xtightvnc server with no problems.
Maybe someday I'll learn a little java so I can contribute some code back to these guys. This app is awesome
refresh?
Hi,
I installed the apk file and got it to connect to my vnc server. However, i seem to only get a snapshot of the desktop and am unable to control the computer. Is there a setting to have it refresh or send commands to the server or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
There is only a limited amount of memory available for a framebuffer on the G1. Because of this sometimes it is not able to display the whole screen in fullscreen mode.
What you can do is go to Menu, select Scaling, and choose 1:1. This will give you a non-scaled version of the screeen. It will start in desktop panning mode by default. You can then use screen gestures or the trackball to move to the portion of the screen you would like to work on. Press the trackball button to toggle to mouse mode. You can then touch the screen to "click" on where you would like. You can toggle back to panning mode by pressing the trackball button again.
Hope this helps!
this works fairly well. i am posting this through vnc right now using my puter at home... hehe
EDIT: some screen shots
double clicking and cursor
Very cool, I see how clicking the button toggles between mouse moving and desktop panning mode. How do I double click and is there any way to get the mouse cursor to appear?
Great!
@Rfairburn Nice work!
I had problems with the market version of VNC due to my screen res being 1900x1200 (black screen on connect). I tried yours instead and it's perfect.
Still struggling to navigate in this app. I liked the mixed mouse option and that you added Ctl-Alt-Del to the menu. Can anyone share how to send an Escape key?, and double-clicking seems still to be elusive. Thanks for the great work though, this is a big improvement!

I didn't write any of it. I just downloaded the latest updates from http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc-viewer/ and compiled them for use.
I just wanted to make it widely available since there wasn't a compiled version available for download.
One question... how do you create the apk file from the zip file you compiled? I already have the SDK (which I used to root the phone, move caches, etc..) if that's what is needed.
I followed the process on http://code.google.com/android/intro/installing.html and used eclipse to build stuff. The latest r17 build that I compiled a couple of days ago (in another post on here) had some additional dependencies which I downloaded as well.
This works!!

Excellent Instructions Carlitozway57! Thank you. This works like a charm! I tested this on 3G and WIFI. I also tried it on EDGE but it lagged a little.
Hello,
I've tried the androidVNC with TightVNC, RealVNC and WinVNC - and I haven't managed to make a connection with any of them.
I haven't got a router. I have typed both the IP address and the password correct. All the androidVNC does is that it tries to connect for a few minutes and then reports it has failed.
What am I doing wrong? I'm using the 3G network since I don't have Wifi available. I'm running Vista on my PC.
Any advice is very much appreciated.

I have a local file server accessble via wifi (or should be) its "\\server"
WHEN Wifi is on and connected and I put that in File Manager "\\server", it says cant connect, but if I put that in PIE it goes there.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work? It used to work in WM6.0.
You should try Resco File Explorer; a LOT better for that purpose. I have been in a similar situation in mapping the drive and it works flawlessly. There's a 15 day trial to check it out; think you'll be pretty impressed.
Try "\\servername\sharename"...
try to access a particular share instead of getting the shares list by using the "\\servername" convention...
try something like "\\servername\sharename" and see what happens...
alternately, i highly recommend schap's rip of the HTC Network Plugin v1.0 Build 30468...it will make the steps of accessing commonly used local shares a whole lot easier by allowing you to map the drive into the "\Network" folder on your device...see 4th post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359458
enjoy!!!
I dont want to buy Resco, but it does work nicely.
\\servername\sharename fails as well and \\servername\sharename\ etc..
I will try the plugin and see. (Update) I instlled it and cant find it anywhere.. How do I "use" it?
Thanks!

Total Commander is free and does this well.
It also has a registry editor, text editor.
Did I mention it is free.
Another thing to check...
maybe your wifi connection is set up in "Internet" mode as opposed to "Work" mode...might explain why it works via PIE...
i think i remember experiencing total failures accessing local shares if my wifi connection was set up as "Internet"
on Settings->Connections->Wifi, edit the particular wifi connection you use and on the first page in the second combo box labeled "Connects to:", make sure the value is "Work"
give that a shot and let us know!!!
That was it!! Thanks! Odd setting really.

woohoo!!! i'm a noob WinMo user as of May 2008 with my Tytn2...coming from 5 years of using something from motorolla that was equivalent to a nokia 3310...totally basic PHONE in the truest sense...no color screen, no camera, big and clunky, pathetic interface...useful ONLY for voice and sms
but my point is that coming from decades of using Windows, somehow WinMo makes sense in a microsoft kind of way with all its occassionally cryptic features and inexplicable odd behaviors...i'm a geek and i'm lovin' it
before this thread is closed, the network plugin is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...i used to use resco for mapping drives but found its behavior to be erratic when my wifi signal was weak...sometimes taking ages to try to open a share just before the wifi icon would show that the connection had dropped
network plugin, IMHO, seems to work a bit better...YMMV

check in Settings->Connections->Network Plugin
while resco's network drive mapping configuration is accessible only from within resco (even though the shares resco mounts are accessible system-wide in any application whether resco is running or not), the network plugin gives a better "integrated" feeling with WinMo even though it is not much different from resco's capabilities
Got the HTC network plugin working. Now I have 2 ways to access the share.

How were you able to remove the ATT tab?
The problem with Opera and MEdia Net is that you need to go to about:config and the Opera config page will open. Next go to proxy and you will see it is now blank. You need to enter the proxy information but I do not remeber what it is but I know there was a post here that spoke about it. I too am searching for the post and if I find it I will edit this message.

if you do opera:config there are some proxy items in http and https that point to www.cingular.com (or something like that). I deleted them already so I can't tell you exactly what they are but that is the answer.
Maybe someone else can look and post it.
In "\Application Data\Manilla\" there's a file called "InternetPortal-en-US.xml"
In an application like TotalCommander, edit the properties to make it NOT Read-only, NOT System File, and then transfer it to your PC. Edit the file in notepad, replacing "http://device.home/" with whatever url you'd like and then "Media NET" with whatever text you'd like it to say. Transfer it back, and put the attributes back to what they were. See my picture below of what I've changed it to.
On that note, you should remove the cingular proxy as described before, and also under Adaptive Zoom, make sure to set the Maximum zoom to 200, minimum overview zoom to 30 minimum zoom to 100 or 80 ish. (it looks much better on a VGA (not WVGA) device).

is there anyway to uninstall this build?
I tried that. When I deselect Read only and System in TotalCommander and then press okay, the changes are not saved. If I go right back to Properties to they are still selected!

Tried that, disabled it, reenabled it, soft reset, nothing
After hours and search and two customer reps in AT&T...the default values in the about:config in Opera should be:
HTTP Server: wireless.cingular.com:80
HTTPS Server: wireless.cingular.com:80
Use HTTP on
Use HTTPS on
I tried it and MEdia Net now works fine.
ok now i can go back to the att sites, thanks. but cv still says "cv is only avaliable on supported 3g phones."

I do NOT want my pictures from my ATT Tilt phone to automatically sync when using Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1. I have a new HP Pavilion m9600t desktop computer, running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and want to use the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 photo software that came with my HP camera. BUT, whenever I sync my ATT Tilt phone, the Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 automatically tries to sync my photos (that are on the ATT Tilt phone) to my desktop PC and also opens the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 software and the computer locks up! How do I stop Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 from automatically syncing my pictures from my ATT Tilt to my desktop PC? Please note that I still need to sync my ATT Tilt phone for Outlook Contacts, Tasks, Calendar, and Notes. I just don't want to sync my pictures that are on my ATT Tilt phone, otherwise the Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 will automatically also open the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 software and try to sync the pictures from the ATT Tilt phone and then lock up. I've already unchecked the option to sync files in Windows Mobile Device Center, but it still tries to sync them anyway and opens the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 software, which then locks up. This has got me stumped. I've also tried changing the AutoPlay options for pictures to "ask me everytime" or "do nothing", but it still happens anyway. Any ideas would sure be appreciated. Please HELP me to stop any automatic sync of pictures from my ATT Tilt phone to my desktop PC when using Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.
Thanks in advance.

There should be a setting somewhere to pick what all is sync'd. uncheck pictures or files.. Something like that.
Please let me know where that setting is?
Can't find any setting on the ATT Tilt or on my HP desktop PC that will prevent automatic syncing of pictures from my ATT Tilt to my HP desktop PC, but if you know PLEASE let me know where that setting is?
HELP! This has got me completely baffled!
Thanks so much.
1st: You should be using WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER
After connecting, select: Pictures,Music&Video
Then, select: Pictures/Video Import Settings.
From there you can set up what you want.
What is the exact setting I should look for?
What is the exact setting I should change to prevent my Tilt from automatically trying to sync pictures? Because when I go into that folder I don't see any adjustment setting to prevent pictures from syncing. PLEASE tell me where this setting might be?
Note: I am using Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Vista 64bit, I go into the Pictures, Music&Video, and there is NO setting to stop the pictures from syncing. Maybe I missing something?
Thanks so much!
Changing your content synchronization settings
Before you can synchronize information with your device, you must select the corresponding content type for synchronization. If you have already selected the content you want to synchronize when setting up your Windows Mobile partnership, you can change your selections in Windows Mobile Device Center.
To change the content to synchronize
Connect your device to the computer. Windows Mobile Device Center starts automatically.
Click Mobile Device Settings.
Click Change content sync settings.
Select the check box for the information type that you want to synchronize.
If available, click Sync Settings for each content type whose settings you want to change, then select the options you want.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each content type.
]Something like that. If you can't figure it out then just ask Help, normally just hit F1 in the mobile sync center. Or use google.

Try alter the way it handle the file extension. Make ie. Windows Foto Gallery your default viewer.
1.) Right click on the image
2.) pick "open with"
3.) pick "choose program"
4.) choose whichever program you want to open the file with
5.) Check the box that says to always use the selected program to open this file
6.) DONE.
Tried that. No go. I've been all over Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 forums and it seems WMDC6.1 has numerous problems that Microsoft says they are aware of. That is, there doesn't seem to be any way of adjusting WMDC for STOPPING picture transfer from my Tilt. If there were a setting in the AutoPlay defaults for the ATT Tilt, or a setting for HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 that would also solve the problem. Maybe a registry fix (which I don't know how to do)?
Thanks, but I'm going crazy with this (and my wife too!) HELP!
Solution Found! Please Post for Others in Need.
Guys, I believe I found the solution. When using an HP Pavilion Elite (m9600t) desktop PC with Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit, and an HP Printer and/or HP Camera that both utilize HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 software: TO PREVENT the ATT Tilt from automatically trying to sync any pictures (from the Tilt to PC) and automatically bringing up the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 software during the sync (which in my case would lock up my Tilt and PC) I used this following procedure:
1) Go to Start and enter: msconfig
2) In the System Configuration go to the Startup tab
3) UNCHECK: PictureMover Application (Manufacturer: HP)
It seems the PictureMover Application causes the HP Photosmart Essential 3.5 to be called up during any sync of my ATT Tilt, therefore, by unchecking it in Startup, I can now sync my ATT Tilt without the HP Photosmart software automatically trying to transfer pictures and then locking up my Tilt and PC. (NOTE: I could not find any adjustments in Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, in AutoPlay settings, or in Default settings.)
Please pass this on.
Thanks guys for all your help. Everyone at XDA has always been GREAT!
Cinemo is an application for finding movie showtimes and information for your area(USA and Canada only, as far as I know). You can use either your postal code or GPS to find your location.

I have just released a new version of Cinemo. From now on Cinemo will be hosted here: http://www.danielgary.net/cinemo/
The new version is really just an interim release that enables image caching for the movie posters and allows automatic updates to Cinemo. A message box will pop up to notify you when the new version is being installed.

P.S. I know the site is ugly. I threw something up there just to host the file for now. I will get something pretty later.

Mods could you please delete the previous thread found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=497225
When I attempted to install this to my memory card the installation would fail; however, the installation to device memory was successful. Can this only be installed to device memory?
Edit: Maybe for a future update you could query the "total $ gross" for each film on the list? Might be a cool addition.
Works well. One suggestion is to have a list of theaters that are within some range of your zip code. Many people go to neighboring zips to go to their preferred theaters.
I will be keeping an eye on this as it would be more convenient than loading up Fandango every time.
im unable to dowload via my ppc.... it just snow a bunch of code and at ppcgeeks the attatchment isnot valid
I get a "No movie times were found for your area." dialog box regardless of the zipcode I enter.
Running on a Sprint Touch Pro, WM 6.1, stock Sprint ROM.

I would imagine that you do not have a data connection open or available. Can you hit the internet with your phone? Try disconnecting it from the computer if the USB cable is connected.

I was able to hit the internet and use other data connection apps fine. I did have it connected to the PC. Disconnected, no change. Cinemo wouldn't work, other apps would.
Did a soft reset, everything works fine. I guess there must have been something that didn't take or load completely until after the soft reset.
Great app, thanks for the work!
Nice App. Since I dont have data plan I guess I will have to check it when I am near a Wifi

+1 for the gps, works like a charm! I use flixter on my ipod touch, and this works just as well for locating movies and since both are very similiar in UI, its really nice to have the familiarity from one device to the other.
Just letting everyone know I have movie synopsis working on my test build. Look for a new update to Cinemo in the next 24-48 hours. It SHOULD automatically update itself when you run it. I will post letting you know when it should be available.
thanks for this app i would love to be able to watch the trailer. maybe you could link it with the youtube app
awesome app, been following it since the first thread. the only thing missing for me would be saving favorite theaters other than that this is perfect. it's helped me out a couple times, thanks!
looks like this is going to be a great app - I am in Canada and i cant seem to enter a Canadian postcode as it caters for zip codes only! I also tried the GPS and it found no cinemas in my area and im downtown Toronto!
Potential feature add: would be great if you could add a feature to be able to enter dvd titles and get it to check the ratings on imdb and metacritic!
Hey thanks for the great app!
Is there a way to add more theaters to the list?
I have to change my area to get different theaters and i much rather just have all the theaters within the area be displayed.
Vancouver, BC, canada working decently!
I agree with some of the others. There needs to be an option for more movie theatres both when viewing the actual movie times and in the theatres tab. Also, itd be nice to check times for other days in advance. Like being able to view the times for Thursday when it is still Monday. Other than that I think it looks really good. Until theres more theatres I am stuck using Live search
every time i change the zipcode the app shuts down with an error. also, sometimes when i open the app it shuts down with an error. tried it on my sprint diamond and touch pro with same results. when it does open without errors it works great though. is there an explanation why there are errors so often? i'd say i've received an error about 40% of the time.
thanks for making this, it's a great idea and very useful. it's much easier and faster than having to open a mobile browser or some other app. keep up the development!
great idea love the concept. would you be able to make this for wqvga devices?
thanks in advance
Nice App but I have been having issues. I am using Energy ROM 3.0. I am not sure if it is because of the 3.7 .Net that he is use or some other reason but I am recieveing a message "failed: \storage card\program files\Cinemo\Cinemo.exe"
I am not sure why I have started to get this. I have more then enough room on my SD card. I have used it in the past and liked the app. Would love to have it on my cell but I am not going to change roms.
So, basically can anyone confirm issues on install? does it have to do with the 3.7 .Net that is being used?
Thanks,
SoBBie
pretty cool app.
i think it would be nice if you could enter your user account information for fandango.com or movietickets.com. that way if you see the movie you want to go see, you can just tap a "buy now" button, and you are good to go. maybe it could pull the confirmation number as well or something.
I want a temporary root, because I don't want to change roms or anything yet. Mainly for free wireless tether. I would like to have something like z4root. Is there anything like this?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Z4 doesn't work for GB, also you can tether w/out being rooted, theirs a guide in the Development Section.
EDIT:
Heres the guide posted in the dev section;

Wireless Tethering is one of the main things I miss about not having root. I specifically bought a wifi only Xoom because I knew I could just tether it to my phone. When I switched to the droid 3 believing it would come unlocked it was like a kick in face.
Recently I came across a thread from Team Black Hat describing a way of enabling free tethering on Verizon without root. In their write up they provide a flashable zip. Useless for us as we don't have root, or a recovery, but it got me thinking. All credit for this goes to Team Black Hat. They rock, I really hope they are working on rooting the droid 3 because they are android gods.
The original thread by TBH can be read here.
I'm not going to go too in depth here, because if you screw you have the possibility to brick your pretty new device. Also, It goes against your TOS with Verizon, and who knows one day they might work out a way to tell who is doing this. The more people who know and use this trick, the more likely it is they will find some way of detecting and or closing the hole.
But I couldn't leave my XDA brothers out of the loop! So with the standard disclaimer (I'm not responsible for anything you do, anything that comes of something you do, blah blah, you know the deal) I will outline the steps required to enable free tethering on our wonderful Droid 3s.
I did this on a windows 7 64 bit pc. The radiocom software would def be happier with a 32 bit xp system, it will throw a lot of errors, but it will work. More on that in a second.
1st. You need the most recent drivers for your computer so that your computer can see your phone. You can get them off the Motorola website, same as if you were going to use adb or RSDlite. The file I downloaded from the moto support site was called MotoHelper_2.0.49_Driver_5.0.0.exe
2nd. You need a copy of Radiocom. Radiocom is a piece of software thats supposed to be for moto employees only and allows you to read and write data directly to your software radio. You need to search the internet for it, because its a copyrighted file I can't post it for you. You need to find the latest version. The best version I found was RadioCOmm_v11.11.11_Install.msi - You also need the .net framework installed on your computer. You can get that from Microsoft's site for free.
3. You need a USB cable and a droid 3.
Now... crack a beer and lets get down to business.
1. Install the moto drivers and the .net framework. Install Radiocom. It will give you all sorts of errors, but it will install.
2. Next, find it under your start menu. Right click on it, and select "trouble shoot compatibility" I just ran with the suggested settings. Basically what this does is run the application under XP compatibility mode. Now take a sip of beer, you are gonna get some error messages but don't tweak.
a. You will still get the first screen that says do you want ot the following program from an unknown company to make changes on your computer - check yes.
b. it will say motorola datacard drivers 1.5.9 : this installation is intended for 32-bit os versions only.please use the 64bit version on this machine. click okay.
c. Installation incomplete: the installer was interrupted before motorola datacard drivers 1.5.9 could be instaled. You need to restart the installer to try again. hit close.
d. Warning: Motorola Dataard Drier installlation package ersion mismatch. the version supplied with this tool does not match the installed version on the machine. WE cannot guiarantee proper radio enumeration unless you install the latest version. the installation package will start again the next tiem this tool is started. Click OK
e. This version of RadioCOmm is more that 2 months old. This version may be out of date. Please visit the PDO compass webpage and download the latest version of RadioComm. - Click OK.
Radiocom will start! Phew!
you will have to select the chipset at start: I selected CDMA 1x (MSM 7500) w/ Android. I don't know if this is the best or most accurate one. I actually spent 45 minutes trying to search for exactly what our chipset base was... but I decided to be brave (or stupid) and went with this one and it worked. after it boots, Under settings in radiocom, USB, Select PST USB Driver.
3. Now, Connect your droid 3 to your computer and put it in PC mode. If you installed the drivers correctly you should get this cool little screen showing your phone and telling you some info about it that pops up from motos software. in radiocom software in the upper right of the screen right under the RC logo, the lgiht should turn green to show the phone is connected. You can test by pushing the GET button under the SW version. It should return your Android software version. DON'T PUSH ANY OTHER BUTTONS. YOU COULD REALLY SCREW SOMETHING UP.
Now a little background, you can read TBH's awesome explanation, but the quick and dirty one is that moto's software radio uses three different 128 char string identifiers for data requests. Thats how they can tell the difference between your phones web browser asking for data, and a laptop or Xoom connected to your phone asking for data. We are going to use Radiocom to make all three strings match the first string - so all data appears to be just for the phone. After doing so - your verizon installed hotspot app will work and the usb tethering option will too! ta da!
Team black Hat has made a screen shot showing all the steps required it can be viewed here.
I'll also try including it right here but i'm not sure how it will look:

3. now take a deep breath... use the arrows in the Radiocom program to find the tab marked P2K 1.
Look at the image and in your Radiocom program in the bottom left there is a box called STELEM/ RDELEM. First Select Dec entries.
Rdelem means read, and STELEM means write.
now this is very very important. Do not screw this part up. make sure again you have selected Dec entries, because if you enter the numbers below in hex mode and then hit DEC they will change and you will be reading and writing the wrong values which is BAD.
In Dec Mode
For ElementID: enter 8040
Record # 1
offset 0
length 128
Now Hit RDELEM. the box in the top right should go green, a bunch of numbers should flash through but most importantly right next to where you entered the element ID and record number the box that says Data (hex only) will now have a 128 char string in there. Hilight the entire 128 byte string and copy it.
4. You are now going to change the element ID to 8041 (record, offset, length stay the same) and hit RDELEM. If you compare these two numbers they are different, this is how moto knows you are tethering. You would have to paste both into a word file becuase they both end in a bunch of 00's so in the tiny data box they look the same, but trust me they are different. Select the data in the databox for 8041 and delete it. Paste the number from 8040. Now hit STELEM. Again you should see a bunch of numbers go through that box on the top right and it should be green.
5. Now you are going to do the same things for element numbers 8042, and 8043. Remember each time to hit RDELEM first, paste the value from 8040, then hit STELEM.
6. Now hit the restart button next the text box top center. You phone will restart. it will say something scary at first like SIm card not found. This is normal. Give it a Second and it will be right back to normal, you will have your 3G icon and be able to make calls, send texts etc.
EXCEPT.... Now you can use the verizon mobile hotspot application and it won't send to that verizon website that says "would you like to pay for tethering?" - you have just successfully hacked your radio to make verizon believe all data requests are phone data requests.

We might not have root yet, but now we have free wireless tethering! I have had this running for about 24 hours and everything seems perfectly functional. My xoom connects right away to my phone and the distance is actually pretty good (like from bed to desk.. not just pocket to hand). Speeds are functional, just like you would get on the phone.
I hope I have made the wait for root just a little easier for my fellow XDA'ers... I know despite the fact I'm taking the Bar exam in 3 days I still check the forums every hour hoping against hope for some new news of root .... or hell... even video chat working in talk (gchat/huddle/etc).
Again I take no credit for this, All thanks to Team Black Hat! But if you wanted to press the thanks button it would make feel all warm and fuzzy inside =)
