Mail App - G1 Apps and Games

Is it me of does the mail app suck big time. a good 75% of the time is gets a connection error. So I have been stuck heaving my gmail account grab my verizon email. And I am not a fan of doing that because if I reply it comes from my gmail account that I never planned on using.

K-9 Mail is supposedly a lot better. You'll find it in the market.

thanks I will have to, anything has to be better than that ****ty one that came installed.

K9Mail is being integrated into the Android OS. I use it all the time and I can see why they would do that, the app beats the built in app easily.

yeah k9 is awesome, it lets you set up how many emails to retrieve and doesn't auto delete accounts, it also has exchange support ()for the most part) and lets you download attachments.
yeah i heard that it will be part of the next update (hopefully)

yeah I did that, and have it set to send from my verizon.net account. But that only works to send on the PC. the phone will only send from my gmail account.
And I have been using k-9 now for the last 12 hours and it is 10 times better then the built in app. Only issue is it will not delete the mail off the server. So I submitted that as a bug.

How to push email

I've been pulling my hair out looking around for how exactly to have emails pushed to the G1. I have both K9 Email for Yahoo and the stock Gmail app for Gmail that I'm trying to get it pushed on.
How the hell do I get this working?? I see no options ANYWHERE to do it, but upon Googling it, everyone seems all happy and excited that it -can- push emails. But, NONE OF THESE PLACES EXPLAINS HOW! I don't care if they're glad it can or not, I want to know HOW to do it. Google themselves don't even mention it.
Can somebody please explain how to push emails before I lose my mind and possibly all my hair??
Thanks in advance
what the hell are you talking about?
You automatically get all emails from the account you registered your g1 with pushed to your device if u did not manually disable it in settings. Via thhe mentioned G(oogle)Mail application!
You can also use the suppiled email app that comes pre installed on the phone. Works with all the major emails except those from an exchange server.
That mail isn't exactly pushed, from what I understand pushed emails to be. Pushed is immediately sending a notification once email is received, the one in Google mail and K-9 has timed when it checks the source email.
Not even SMS are really PUSHED to your device. It is how it is. Use it and shut up.
How shall it technical work to push something to your device ? It is impossible .. The intervalls for sms/calls are just much shorter.. thats why mobiles drain so much battery even in standby.. and the intervall for gmail to check new emails is shorter than 1minute .. i dunno how much is it but it's near to instant

You do have an exchange account? POP3/web mail can't be pushed

The GMail client does not "check" the source email, it uses a proprietary version of IMAP IDLE (push) technology. It is indeed pushed to your phone, when "Sync" is enabled. However, K9 and the stock email app do not provide IMAP IDLE support at this time, so there is no way to set that up. K9 has it on the To-Do list. I don't know about you, but the instant my account that is set up with the Gmail client on the phone gets an email - my phone notifies me, sometimes it is faster then a desktop client. And, I assure you that it is not constantly sending out requests checking in for mail on the server, that would be poor coding on Google's part and waste a lot of their resources.
So, to answer your concerns directly.
The GMail client IS what is referred to as "Push" email.
The K9 and stock Email clients are currently not capable of "Push" email.

How about doing some reading before sticking your foot further into your throat.
IMAP IDLE - how it works.
It is very efficient.
"This means that an active client will always be kept up to date. The IDLE command deals with the situation where the client has no more requests to make. The server responds to the idle command when there is a new message (or messages) which indicates to the client that there are new messages. "
as i said it .. the g1 "pings" the server all the time ..

You're still looking for a clue, almost getting there
In case of push mail your phone does NOT poll for new mails: The mailserver will notify your phone when new mail is available. Yes your phone sends an idle command, but nothing happens after that: The connection is just left open and when there is new mail the server will send it.

I think you are grasping the concept, but the semantics are lost on you.
It works like this:
1. Client connects to server, does it's initial check-in, and handles new requests.
2. Client sends IDLE command to server, telling the server that it is still active, but not actively sending requests.
3. Client sits IDLE (no more data is transmitted from client to server unless an action takes place on the CLIENT requiring transmission - ie, an email is sent).
4. Server receives a new message.
5. Server sends a packet to the Client (knowing where it is located based on the open - yet IDLE connection).
6. Client responds to the packet and is subsequently transmitted the message.
See how many times I used the word IDLE - get the picture? As long as you know what IDLE means, you will understand how efficient this is. Here is a quote from that page I posted a link to:
Phone. For older phones there could be an issue of increased battery usage due to holding the connection open. This is unlikely to be a problem on a modern phone.
Another practical problem is that current phone networking technology will lose IP network connectivity from time to time, and this will need to be automatically re-established, and the IMAP connection re-established if this is lost due to a long network failure.
In summary, the overall IMAP IDLE architecture has good performance.

Whoo HOO! Another GIRL on the forum! Go ZEE ZEE! And, she's CUTE, too!
Anyway, back to the subject at hand.
Proxin - I believe (although I could be wrong) what is going on is that you don't have the Gmail as your primary mail account - the one that everyone sends email to.
I only lately began to use Gmail. So, I have three email addresses that are set to forward to the Gmail account. The time it takes for these email to be forwarded and received by Gmail is the only lag I experience at all.
If you are using Gmail's "fetcher" feature to fetch email from other accounts... I have seen up to 30 minutes before each "fetch." So, it can take awhile. In which case I suggest that you go to any primary accounts that you have and set them to forward your email to your Google account and see if that decreases the delay.
Touchdown by exchange is the best email push app on g1 currently. But its not free . if u wanna sync contacts u can do that during the trial period
I just got my g1 Monday and all my contacts were on a server and I was discouraged that I could sync google or my g1 contacts with the exchange server. I then tested every app in the marketplace i could find and couldn't get any to sync contacts except Touchdown.
ExchangeIt worked fine after I figured out how to use it. Most of the other apps only work for Microsoft Server 2007 so they weren't compatible.

Touchdown rocks, and is worth the money.
Even the Exchange support in the upcoming cupcake is lame, as ig works with a lame email client.

[Help] Which e-Mail App Do I Use?

On Cyanogen's ROM, there's 2 email apps. One called eMail and the other is Work Email. I want to sync my school email to the phone. So, I don't want it taking them off the server but just copying them. Anyway let me know which one I should be using, and maybe what's different about them?
I'd usually forward to my Gmail but my school filters out forwarded mail to Gmail.
You should use eMail for the task. Work Mail is to connect to exchange server.
My suggestion is K9 Mail. You can download from Market, and it has much more features than stock eMail app.
There is no free Mail app for Android I tried so far that I could say I like.
GMail app misses some important GMail functions, eMail app never ever shows me notifications even though I enabled them, Work eMail is exchange only with nearly no options and K9 has graphical, usability and speed issues.
Maybe I should try Touchdown Exchange for my University Mail (which uses exchange).
Are there any other Mail apps someone could recommend?

Hotmail Syncing

Sorry if this has been addressed already, but I thought it relevant so I'm posting it here. I've always used just my GMail account with the native app and it's worked fine so I never really bothered with my Hotmail account since it's only POP mail and I feel that having it poll my Inbox every 15mins drains the battery heavily. But I read this morning that they've just started rolling out the new Windows Live Hotmail Wave 4 today, which includes Exchange ActiveSync support for Push email and Account syncing for Calendar and Contacts.
As it's being rolled out in clusters, my account hasn't been upgraded yet. But I decided to try to set up my account to Push anyways and it seems like it's working fine.
If you want to do the same in the Stock Email App, Add a New Account. Then input your Email Address and Password then hit the Manual Setup button and Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and use these settings:
Domain\Username: \username@hotmail.com
Password: password
Server: m.hotmail.com
Use Secure Connection (SSL): Yes
Accept all SSL Certificates: No
hit Next, then make sure the Email Check Frequency is set to Automatic (Push) and then just set your other sync options. (I've only synced mail since my contacts and calendar are synced with GMail).
I'm sure some things will change when my account actually gets the upgrade, but for now, it's basically all I need.
Full Disclosure: I'm on 2.2 and using the stock Email App for this. I don't know how this will impact 2.1 or if you're using K9 or Touchdown, etc. so feel free to post you results.
Just tried your settings with the 2.1 email app and it's no go.
Just tested...
...and it works! Running 2.2 (FRF50).
Even though I rarely use it and that it's mostly used for pretty useless mail it's still nice that it works, finally.

Using stock 2.1 update 1, it works except there's no calendar option(should only available in 2.2), but the server is not very stable, need a few more retry to connect
Must be why it failed then.
2.2 you can add with out having to change any settings.
Do you know the setting to use in any other apps? The stock mail app doesnt allow showing html pictures, so i'd prefer to use k-9 or touchdown...
THANKS!!

Worked for me on 2.1 email app. Now, how do I get a widget to show me the unread count?
Finally MS do something useful to their antiquated service!
Tried it, but doesn't work (yet)
Do you get an e-mail when your account is upgraded?
Guess that is cool if it works, but you can only have 1 Exchange Activesync account on any device...that includes iPhone, WinMo etc...
Has this stopped working for anyone? I'm just getting 'unable to connect to server' now.
Same here, getting the "Unable to open connection to server."-message now.
The wierd thing is that yesterday I got the little yellow bar up top in Hotmail telling me to restart the browser to try the new version (which is what actually got me to try this) but nothing really changed, rollback?

Technically true, but two Push accounts can be accomplished on both Android & WinMo(windows live + exchange)
For us with X10's who are stuck with version 1.6 of Android,
What are the settings to get this working in K9? Has anyone successfully got it working with that mail prog?
Thanks!
Still not working here. Go Microsoft
Small update:
My Hotmail account was upgraded to Wave 4 this morning... Hotmail via Exchange? Still no go. It worked for about an hour back on 17th June, and nothing since.
Well it's all working again now
so its real push service?
if yes i need try this
i wa susing SEVEN but lack of html =(
Yes, it's proper push.

Hi...
I am using cloudmagic for few months... Tried many but fully satisfied with Cloudmagic...... Create an account in cloudmagic... then configure all your accounts...... If you flash roms and once you install cloudmagic afresh, just log in with cloudmagic account and you will have all your pre configured emails ready including exchange accounts.....

Nine - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3.
Using it for half a year already - awesome app. Installed Inbox and removed Gmail with Exchange Services from the phone completely.
Has trial period afaik.
I use Nine is a very good App!

Another vote for Nine. It's genuinely one of the best email clients I've ever used. Far better than any other Exchange integration.
Nine.
nine is the best excange email app.

Nine! Definitely worth the money!
Nine. It's awesome.
Outlook Beta/Mailwise
I have been using outlook beta from play store. Love it because it skips encryption or forced pin usage from the exchange server. Also MailWise is excellent. Also has option to skip encryption or forced PIN if you enable it. No root necessary.
Outlook Download: taps.io/outlookmobile
Mailwise Download: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntomo.email
Another vote for Nine! Switched a number of users at work over to that app. With the new Outlook beta...if only it had mark as read from the dropdown notification menu like Nine, I'd probably switch to that. (it's a really nice app!)

It does not sync with calendar
I feel Nine is the best apps so far. Only thinking whether I should buy it or not.
Just to use the mail App I moved to MIUI, which is having good mail app.
I do not understand why Google is not making a good app with their build. Google mail app/stock does not show pictures in mail rather it show it as attachment.
I mean if anyone sending picture pasted in mail text space, then it comes as attachment.
My previous phone was Samsung and really like the mail application. I used Huawei phone same experience, mail application is good. Only for Oneplus one where I have to use CM or CM flavour ROM which does not have a good mail application. I have even tried in recent lollipop builds, all mail apps having same issue. Picture comes as attachment.

Huawei email client

On trying to configure the built-in email client, the gmail setup errors with "unable to establish connection with server".
I have made contact with Huawei on the matter, and the response was that I had to install Gmail official app. That made me wonder what Huawei is doing with their email app. They have issued the app with a separate setup for gmail account connection, but it does not seem to work. And they recommend using a different app.
Do they not care to maintain their own app? And if so, this being their general attitude to problem solving is disappointing. And leaves an impression of a half-hearted effort in development.
Anybody having found a way to work around the issue?
I find using anything other than the Gmail app to manage my gmail a pain in the ass - not sure why you would want to use Huawei's app for Gmail. The Gmail app is way faster and better to navigate. In saying that, I do have 3 gmail addresses (2 google apps and the other Gmail) so I don't ever need a 3rd party email client.

I agree to using Gmail app, and its benefits. It just struck me that they have this issue and don't address it at all. They could at least have removed the option, as long as it is not working.

Hi guys, I just started using Huawei P10 a few days for work. I setup the email using huawei native client and I like it. But since last night, I notice I didn't received any email. I tried to send email to myself but the email didn't go through. I'm curious and check my email using my laptop. Then I saw few email came in.
Then I'm wondering what's happening here? I press sync few time but came out "Couldn't open connection to server".
I tried removing the email and perform setup again... didn't work either.
Has anyone got the solution why this happens?
I'm not saying the gmail apps is not good, but I prefer in that way. Almost like using outlook.
I have a few gmail/msn address, and they all worked well with native Huawei mail client. no problem.
I am using a BlackBerry z30 now, and I loved the blackberry Hub, is that something similar in android? and free is better, or one time purchase is ok,
