Hi Guys,
Although I set my backlight to stay on for 2 minutes, it randomly defaults back to the 10 second timeframe.
Why does it do this and can it be prevented?
I have the same problem. I did a hard reset, and it was fine, until I hit lock, now it's happening all over again. I adjusted it in kaisertweaks, but it just ignores it. Screen always dims after 10 seconds.
Check backlight and power setting for both battery and mains.
If you are also using S2U2, check the backlight settings there also. Whatever it says on S2U2, it will override the other settings.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
MAC
I charge my phone each night, and each night the screen turns itself on, so I turn it off and later it turns back on, so I turn it off, then later it turns back on, so I turn it off, then it's time to get up... so I turn it on
I'm not getting calls in the night, data streams, messages... anything that should activate the phone. It just seems to like to turn the screen on.
Anyone else? Can I do something about it?
Thanks
I am assuming you are charging it with the USB plugged to the computer?
Not sure if it was designed to be like that, or a bug in the firmware, or a design flaw, it seems like when plugged to the computer this would happen.
Haven't really tested it out myself tho. (but the screen doesn't seem to turn on when plugged to the wall charger, although I can't verify yet )
The screen does not turn off when charging using the wall charger.

even if the option is checked, the backlight will still be turned on. It will just dim to minimum level when the time is reached.
Yep there are four settings in that window that will help solve this problem
The manual workaround of clicking the power button to turn off the screen works for me. You might have installed software on your x1 that activates the screen every so often?

no, if you checked, it'll be turned off.
now a slight OOT, but when X1 playback musics it is also always turn on the screen, is there a fix for that?

Have you tried it on an X1? What ROM version are you using? I have tried it using "GENERIC_UK" rom
Here's my setting at "Setting" > "System" > "Power" > "Advanced" (during charging with USB cable through a PC):
On battery power:
Turn off backlight if device is not used for [ 30 sec ]
Turn off device if not used for [ 1 min ]
On external power:
Turn off backlight if device is not used for [ 1 min ]
Turn off device if not used for [ 2 min ]
Result:backlight dim (but still on) after 1 min, and keeps in dim status afterward (say 5 hours)... NEVER TURN OFF...

actually I did some testing before, that even with the options checked to turn off device on external power, when it is plugged to a computer it will not actually turn off the device, but this option will turn off the device when the external power source is the AC power adapter.
Again perhaps a design flow or bug (someone was saying it could be by design so that when say transferring a file from the computer it won't cut off), who knows?

on external power, the screen will dim, but not switch off. To off it, just press the power on/off button. the X1 will continue to be charged though.

To manually press the power on/off everytime is very inconvinent. You cannot press it at once coz it will auto wake up during the start of sync process. You have to wait for about 2 seconds before pressing the power off button to turn the backlight off...
Moreover, when there is a phone call/SMS the backlight turns on again and you have to press the power off again... I would rather like the backlight to turn COMPLETELY off as the option at Power settings imply (which is the behaviour of my Tytn)...
Bumping this thread up as it has the exact same unresolved issue as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561832 but the title is better and it clearly states that all the standard options have been tried.

Yep, I've had 5 different WinMo devices since '05 and they all worked as expected except the X1. I like to use it as an MP3 player at night, Pocket Player has a sleep timer built in so I just like to leave it running as I drift off most nights. But if I do anything, change the volume, rewind, anything at all the screen comes back on and stays on until I hit some other button to turn it back off. All my other devices obeyed the settings you set in the Power tab, but not the X1...
I'd very much like the screen to auto-off if I tell it to while on USB power. It's not only wasting power, but it wakes me up and gets me fumbling for the tiny power button at 2 in the morning. Any fix would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter

----------------------------------
ummm, 2 seconds is very inconvenient???? darn, are you an air traffic control cadet? btw its not the sync process you wait for, its the usb connection (like any usb drive) that must be established
i plug mine in, then hit the power button, thats it... be honest with ya, i cant see whats the problem of pressing the power button after plugging in the cord...i really cant see it, i would understand if there was a case that the power button was not turning off the screen...i guess its just me, but i dont see the fuss
For me personally I'm not syncing, I'm using it plugged into the wall, and any time I hit any control the screen turns on and has to be manually turned off. It even seems to turn on randomly after I did turn it off. It'd be great if there was some fix for this...

can you try start - settings - system tab - keylock? make sure that the first option is checked "wake up device by pressing the power button"...that should solve the waking up part anytime you hit any control...

Thanks for your reply joe, the only problem is I do want it to wake if I hit a button - otherwise the button has no effect. So if I'm listening to an MP3 at 2am and I've pressed the power button to turn off the display, if I want to stop the MP3 playback I hit the 'center' button twice, once to wake the device and once to stop playback. Or I might hit the up/down toggle to change the volume or the right/left toggle to fast-forward/rewind. I like the screen coming up in all these cases - but after a minute or so I'd also like the screen to turn off, as it does when on battery mode and on any other WM device I've used.
Having to hit the power button again after every action, or in your case before and after - unfortunately that is not user friendly... I have all the settings in the Power menu set as I want them with "On External Power: turn off backlight if device is not used for: 1 minute" checked and set - It would be great if there was some way to find out what Sony did to break this core Windows Mobile functionality and if there is some way to fix it...
Thanks,
Peter
Registry Fix Created
Ok, I think I have a fix for this. I googled around some more and found that this might be an HTC problem more than an SE one. There were various registry keys people suggested to try to fix the 'backlight problem' - which may or may not be related. None of those suggestions seemed to work, but I kept changing keys myself and eventually found this seemed to do the trick.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\ACUserIdle: 120
I confirmed that changing this value affects the amount of time before my X1's screen turns off - but my MP3s still play with the screen off and my phone wakes on receipt of a new call. This value is the # of seconds before the screen turns itself off (in this case 2 minutes). You do need to soft reset for the change to take effect.
This doesn't seem to be posted anywhere else that I've found doing this to fix this issue issue - I changed a few other registry keys as well that might be enabling this fix. So anyone with this problem, please do give this a try and if it doesn't work I'll post the other keys I changed as well - and if it does then post to say so and we're good
Peter
Update: I tested it also while hooked up to the computer and it does work with the phone accessible through active sync with the screen off and the battery charging (faster now that it isn't competing with the screen for power, except for the 2 minutes before it times out). If I want to use it I just click a button and the screen stays on till I leave it alone for 2 mins and it remains off. Get a call or a message and the screen goes on for 2 minutes and then off - Exact same behaviour on AC and USB - exactly the behaviour I wanted
spot on!!!

Just wanted to confirm that this is spot on. I had an issue with the screen dimming but not turning off when plugged in or on battery. I modified the following and all is well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\BattUserIdle: 20
Thanks pdamouse

The screen keeps blinking back to full brightness, every 30 seconds or so, when it is left alone and the screen dims normally. It is as if something is pressing a button or touching the screen.
When I press the power button and send it to suspend mode, the backlight goes off, and the tilt no longer responds to touch or button pressing. For some reason it pops itself out of suspend and turns back on every couple minutes. My battery life is going down extremely fast. 100% to 40% in three hours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I searched the forum but never found a specific topic for this issue.

I have the same problem w
th the backlight comming on by itself & battery life depletes extremely fast. I am using HD 15 Nov with 3.29.
In addition to backlight issue my hardware keys are no longer working.
Please has anyone got any advice
i have the same problem. the only thing that seems to work is doing the keypad lock and putting it to sleep. it will occasionally blink like its trying to come back on but doesnt. another thing i did is put my phone in flight mode, locking the keypad and putting it to sleep. when i do that it doesnt blink or anything. sadly i wont receive phone calls or emails and texts. i think the blinking has something to do with phone signal and accessing the networks.
hth
also i noticed that it wakes from sleep when the keypad "unlock" screen pops up.
i think i found a fix
Ok I hope this helps for you because it seems to work for me. I first went to start/settings/sounds & notifications. Then I clicked on the notification tab and unchecked everything leaving only the ringer on for when calls come in. when I did that, for about 5 minutes (longest I tested it at) the phone did not turn on and the backlight didn’t do that weird grayish flash thing. Afterwords I at first was going to go down the list of all notifications and turn things on/off to see what wakes up my phone but i got too lazy and only checked one setting. One thing I noticed is that when I have the beam: autorecieved notification turned on for display a message on the screen I get that weird backlight flickering thing. So for now I just have sound alerts on when I receive any type of messages and a sound alert for reminders. So far so good, my phone hasn’t woken from sleep in 20 minutes.
Hey I was hoping that someone new of a registry setting or 3rd part app that I could use to automatically lock the keys of my X1 after a minute or so.
I can only find the option to do it with a password in the standard settings and I'm sure that would get annoying after a while so I was hoping to do one without, just like that standard key lock.
Any ideas?
For me after one minute it will lock automatically and can only restore it with the power button (can lock the keys manually by pressing the power button key too).
See Start -> Settings -> System -> Power -> Advanced
Tick the second option and set your preferred time.
Do you mean the lock function from holding down the end call button?

Exactly, I would prefer that to the setting to turn the screen off and only being able to turn it on via the power button, if possible
Something like this. Have not tried it myself

Sorry if this isn't what you are after, but...
Start -> Settings -> System -> Power -> Advance
On battery power:
[x] Turn off device if not used for: [3 min \/]
Start -> Settings -> System -> Key Lock
When device is in Sleep mode:
(x) Wake up the device by pressing the POWER button
...results in my phone going to sleep after 3 mins of no use, with the only way to wake it by pressing the power button (or to have an incoming call)

Yeah in those 3 minutes the screen takes any touch as an input though, while being in your pocket.
I don't get it, if you hold down the close call button the phone locks itseld and you get a click here to unlock screen if you touch the screen. Why can't the X1 have an option to enable this after x seconds?
Hell, my T630 has that.

What's wrong with the power button lock? It is almost the same, the difference is that you don't have to touch the screen to unlock but press the power button.
I don't understand at all this topic. The topic starter said he wants a lock without pressing anything after one minute. The solution provided by me and artesea is exactly that. Again the only difference is the unlocking method which instead using the screen you press the power button.
People are quite finicky these days....
I find this annoying also.
I now have to lock my phone (holding down the end call button) and then push the off button when I put it in my pocket. Would be better if theres an auto screen off and keyboardlock when you push the off-button.
Sorry, do we have different phones??????
To "lock" my phone I press the Power button, everything goes dark and I can put it in my pocket, doesn't matter if I hit the call button or tap the screen, the only way to "unlock" the phone is to press the Power button again.
If I forget to press the Power button after 3 minutes (but you can set this as low as 40 seconds) it "locks" the phone for me.
No need to press the End Call, or tap on the today screen.

I used to just press the power button and put the phone to sleep too... but then after a could long flight I found out that 1) if I put my phone in my jeans' front pocket (or actually... anywhere that have a chance to bump the power button), I can hit the power button and 2) once I hit the power button, the phone wakes for a couple hours trying to search for the network in the sky... and thanks god the plane didnt crash because of that but it did drain all the battery
I dunno if you have seen this too, but I realized that happened to me a couple times (not only on the plane but when I was walking as well) and eventually I decide I will hit the end call button to lock the phone before I hit the power button
this also happened when I had S2U2 installed... but since I didnt find it too useful (very nice if you want a iphone feel... but I already had an iphone for too long =P) and I dont want another application running in the background I decided to use the lock button instead
I was looking for automatic keylock too .. and then I too relized I don't need it ! Automatic screen-off is all I need.
For everyone who doesnt understand this thread, hold down the end call button and wwatch what happens.
The benefit is that yiu can see updates, email, sms, etc because the screen remains on for a while.

aaa..a lil help needed..i want to lock (the end call button lock) to happen automatically.
NOT the POWER button lock....
When i long hold the cut-call button, (which also has a lock icon on it) to happen automatically and is there a setting anywhere???
Try TouchLockPro, ever the best, even if just a few function is working on Xperia.
But actually this is what you are looking for.
When I make a phone call the backlight stays on and is nice and bright like i want it. But as soon as I press the end button, the backlight turns off and my screeen is REALLY dark. Pushing any button doesn't make the backlight come back on. I have to manually go into the backlight settings and toggle it to get it to turn back on. Any suggestions?
use kaisertweak/advanced config
disable fast sleep during call, and sleep during call
