Display stays on after midnight wake-up - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi,
it's hard to believe no one asked this before but I could not found anything about this..
My Diamond (as probably every wm phone) wakes up at midnight.. but because I'm loading the battery over night it does not switch off the display completely but stays dimmed until i switch it off manally.. because it lays right next to my bed I really hate it doing that.
So is there a possibility to switch the display completly off during loading? I have the windows configuration the way that it should switch off the display after 1min in ac-mode.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

I'm having the exact same issue with my HTC FUZE.Wakes up, then stays in a dimmed mode until I put it back to sleep. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

The phone settings are set for backlight off after 1 minute (on external power). Once the phone wakes up, it stays on (in a dim mode) until I physically press the power button to put it back in the standby mode.

Why does it wake up at midnight?
Is it because you have installed a program that restarts it automatically?

i've noticed my diamond wakes up at midnight, feels like it doesn't go off, but does after a few minutes, all the buttons light up as well as if i a txt is about to come on, but the screen come on, i've only noticed it as i've been up late recently and i have the diamond on front of me on hy desk, my old orbit phone (which i keep meaning to sell) doesn't do it, so i can't see it being a wm bug

Weird.. My Diamond doesnt wake up at midnight

Do you (or in the past) have G-Alarm installed. This fixes a windows alarm clock bug. It switches on at midnight to do some sort of maintenance. I have found my phone no longer stays on as you describe, but I always run the latest version of g-alarm
BTW - get your orbit on ebay. I did a buy it now auction and got £150 for my Orbit a few months ago

No More Issues
I have since flashed my ROM to the NATF 4.5 and I have no more issues with the phone coming on at midnight.

Mine used to do that too, the screen would come on and the clock also switches back to the big clock which I hate. After installing galarm it went away but the clock still switches to the big clock and I have to switch it back every morning.

My Topaz also wakes up at midnight and it feels like it won´t shut off! How long should this session last to reorganize all the things? G-Alarm is installed and since then I had this issue.
I could deactivate the midnight wakeup, but I don´t think this is recommend!? Is it?

Backlight wont go off ....

i have set the back light to turn off after one minute in external power.
usb sync cable connected to pc and back light will go dimmer in one minute but not complete off.
anyone has this problem?
this seems to be the new behavior of the TyTN II vs. the old TyTN: The back light never goes completely off. You have to push the power button to put the unit in standby. When I listen to music, for instance, I want the backlight to go off to save power: I must push the power button to turn off the backlight. The music still plays, which is nice...
Anyway I'm not sure what to do about it when it's connected to a computer to sync, since pushing the power button would likely interrupt the sync. It doesn't bother me that the backlight doesn't go off.
Hi
I'd go as far to say this is the new behaviour of Windows Mobile 6. The Toshiba G900 was exactly the same. It is possible to get a small app to turn the backlight off completely however when it's connected to your computer via USB it isn't drawing power from the battery but from the computer so it doesn't matter, and it's just show you it is still on.

Phil
8525 running Black Satin WM6 doesn't do this, I don't think it's WM6
rite i dont mind the power consumption, but i cant go to sleep with the light on next to me, i like it off completely to save screen life too.

With all due respect that is a cooked ROM and will not need to follow WM6 best practice or MS guidelines.
I think this happens with the Kaiser (like it does with the G900) because the LCD isn't transreflective. With a transreflective device, even in normal room light you can usually see what is on the TFT display, so the device can time out the backlight completely turning it off, and you still know it is powered on but just the backlight has gone off. With a non transreflective screen like the Kaiser, if the backlight did go off completely while the device is still on, you can not see anything on the TFT screen, so it looks completely off, but it isn't. So I think the dimmed backlight is so you know it is still on by being able to see something on the display.
You can see this happening on battery power. If the backlight is timed to go off before the device powers down, it doesn't go off completely but dims, then shuts off completely when the device goes into standby.

You have a few options:
1) Power off the device.
2) Press the standby button.
3) Turn it upside down or cover it.
4) Download this application that will let you turn off the backlight completely. http://ppcsoft.narod.ru/english/

This will be making little different to your screen life. The backlight is made up of white LEDs, these will have a lifetime of around 50,000 to 100,000 hours (more when used at a dimmed setting) so will easily outlast the device even if running non-stop from the day you buy it.
Best Regards
Phil
ic, as long as its ok for the screen life i am cool with it. thanks for the input.

This app would be good except that when you set the action to turn the light off in say 15 seconds it only does it the first time and then must exit itself because it won't do anything further until you reload it.
I need a program that stays resident and turns the light off after a set period of time. Pressing the power button isn't good enough because that stops a lot of apps running by putting the Kaiser into standby.
Anyone know of a program or fix?
The 8525 turned the backlight off no matter if you used stock or cooked ROM. The 8125 was the same way. Not until I got my Tilt did this "feature" arrive.
There may be some kind of a flaw in the programming. No, that never happens with a M$ program.
I was having the issue described in the thread, backlight stayed on. I played with my power and backlight settings and while searching for the answer my screen dimmed, even though it is connected via USB. I think if you go back and reset your backlight and power settings, that you will then see the desired effect on the PDA screen.
My settings:
Power= On Battery- 1 minute, On External- 2 minutes
Backlight Brightness= On Battery set to middle (half way), On External set to full
Battery Power Tab and External Power Tab- both set to 1 minute
The end result is that after 1 minute my screen dims to the lowest backlight setting. Screen is dim but I can still read what is there.
This is a very old thread, the backlight is always on because the Kaiser's screen is not transreflective like it's predecessor Hermes. If the light is out you will see nothing where you could with the Hermes. It's just the way it is with this model.
I have another question which it is related with the backlight and power off.
I tried to power off the phone by pressing and holding the power button. It asks me to confirm it. However, after the phone is "powered" off, it seems can be turned on by sliding out the keyboard.
Is it normal? or is it something to be fixed?
I have an ATT Tilt with stock ROM.
(just got it few days ago from ebay).
Thanks.
Down with new, weird "features"!

If I read your sarcasm correctly, I am in agreement that this is a dubious feature. I think there are a number of changes from 8125&8525 to "8925" that are questionable. I wish HTC would spend more time getting the hardware and basic features working perfectly, and less time adding new programs just to change the look.
Transflective . . .

Everything I can find in searching says both the Hermes and the Kaiser have transflective screens, (as well as the 8125); e.g., from elite-electronics.com RE: the Tytn II: "color transflective TFT". [However, neither the 8125 or Tytn II have the technology that allows good viewing in daylight, like a Garmin Nuvi 350 or similar]
But if you can actually see something on screen on the Hermes when backlight is turned off, then that is truly different from the 8125 and the Tilt.

This is normal behavior. If you don't like it...download KaiserTweak.
Under the Keyboard->Slide Wake option you can disable it.

Agreed. HTC - stop fixing what isn't broken in the first place.

Transreflective is NOT in the HTC TyTN II spec but is in the TyTN I spec. You can't believe a reseller.
If you turn off the backlight on a Hermes and then grab a big flashlight and shine it on the screen, you can then easily see the screen, the brighter the light the better you will be able to see it.
If you try this with Kaiser you will quickly see that the bright light will make it impossible to see the kaiser screen, no mater what backlight setting you choose, and certainly not on low.
It's a simple test and I'm convinced on what I say.
That said, the Kaiser's transmissive screen is super bright in most mid to low light areas since transreflective screens are normally not quite as bright as transmissives.

Backlight bug

Hi all,
i have the Kaiser for a week, and was thinking the batterry autonomy isn't especially amazing..
Then doing some research, i've found out that that despite the backlight setting set to be turned off after 30 sec, it was NOT turned off.
Switching setting to 1 min doesn't help either.
Setting it to 10 sec DOES work, the backlight turns off after 10 secs, BUT turns back ON after various seconds (sometimes +/- 11 secs, sometimes after 21 seconds...), then 10 secs later again off, etc etc... (cycle forever).
I did removed from the today screen both SPB Mobile shell and HTC Home (today screen = blank). But the problem is still there...
so the questions :
1) Does anybody experience that (it took me a full week of use to note this... can you try it on your Kaiser ?)
2) Any idea/solution to fix this ?
Best Regards,
Mike.
Just letting you know, that mine works as it should.
I dont have that bug .... but another bug:
After soft-reset, the battery backlight will be set to 10 seconds.
No clue yet why that happen.
When having issues like that try a hard reset and do not use a back up just set everything back up by hand. I found that most apps still are not ready for WM6 just yet since it really is a new OS even though we have had it for what seems like a very long time now.

When you set the back light to turn off, it doesn't actually turn off, instead it drops to minimum brightness. If you are in darkish room and so have the backlight set to minimum anyway, it looks like it isn't going off.
This is by design for Windows Mobile 6 devices, the Toshiba G900 was exactly the same. I can only guess it is because the screens are not trans-reflective, so they dim to the lowest level so you can still make out what is on the display and can tell it is still on, rather than in standby. This makes the behaviour seem similar to those moving from trans-reflective displays as while the backlight could go out completely, you could still make out what was on the display.

LCD burn in (image persistence)

Hey all,
I am having troubles with the LCD on my touch diamond, i have had it for quite a while now.
In January this year, I started to notice that the soft button bar at the bottom of the screen was flickering, just the soft bar. I would turn off the screen for about half a day and it would go away, then it would happen again in a few days.
This happened for a few weeks, then it just stopped.
Now its back again, where I can see "Now Playing" faintly, as well as what is actually there ("Contacts"), but i don't have WMP open. and the whole bar flickers slightly. i just have to turn the screen of for a minute and it dissapears.
I only had WMP open for about 5 minutes..
I have the same issue. Here's what I did to (temporarily, I assume) fix the problem.
I made a white picture in MS Paint that was 640x480 pixels and put it on my phone, then set the screen to maximum brightness and left the screen on with that picture full screen. It got rid of the burnt in image.
I think the problem I had is that in my power settings, I had it to where the screen never turns off when plugged in. If I got a text message or e-mail after I plugged it in and went to bed, the screen would turn on and never turn off until morning. I've changed my power settings so even when plugged in, it doesn't stay on for more than a minute. I hope that fixes it.

I too have the same problem and i did what you said but its not working, Any other suggestion....
same here... i removed the battery for 4 hours (at night) . got up and everything went back to normal . happen once a few months ago .
i would try it tonight and see and will report back. AND i have also found another issue with my diamond of newtons ring. Now am really getting pised at htc pathetic quality phone
I'm experiencing the same problem as well.. it come and goes and I've somehow learnt to ignore it. So far it just disappears after a few hours of use.
Hey its thr with many people, A quick remedy. Increase the brightness level to max....wait fr a few seconds thn put it back to normal. Wont prevent it permanently...but yes will hold it off for a while
Happens to my Diamond too. I am now trying different versions of HSPL to see if the problem is related to it.

[Q] Screen goes black during call, CM10.1 dialer

Hiya folks. Running CM10.1 stable on my targa (aka Droid Bionic). It was beautiful except for lack of nav dock support, a problematic Google Now (different problem, with workaround), and this particular problem, which I hope someone know what I am talking about...
When a call comes in and I answer by the slider, the screen goes black, whether or not I held the phone up to my head.
I cannot turn the screen back on. None of the buttons seem to do anything, though backlight for the 4 hard buttons does turn on indicating that some command was received by the touchscreen. Not even the power button will bring the screen back during the call.
If the other party hangs up, the phone goes back to normal.
With screen off, I can't hang up.
I can hang up if my Bluetooth headset was connected and I hang up with that.
I've searched all over and this issue seem to be a pretty popular issue last December across all CM 10 builds. However, I don't know if this was ever resolved for this build.
I can't find an option in the ROM to just flat "turn off face proximity detection" either. Or in any way to "tweak" it.
CPU-Z says my proximity sensor is working, so I guess it's just not calibrated properly for the dialer?
Can we get a "special hidden tweaker" much like the light sensor tweak for the auto-brightness levels?
Figured it out. It wasn't CM. It was Screebl and the stupid orientation sensor, and how the Launcher is fixed to portrait mode.
I think I had my phone laid down and it's at a diagonal so it's in landscape mode, and the phone's fine with that when it's just showing contacts. Screebl kicks in and determines that landscape, phone orientation says stay on, so screen stayed on. It was set to turn off the screen IMMEDIATELY when the orientation goes out of "viewing range". (Saving batteries, ya know).
When the call was answered, Screebl should have turned itself off (i.e. ignore input while call is in progress). But it didn't. The "answer the phone" screen flipped the display back to portrait mode. The phone, still laid flat, in "landscape", is now "out of viewing range", and Screebl turned off the screen.
Strange interaction among the various apps, yes.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make my Bionic, with extended battery last the whole day. Juicedefender Ultimate somehow just keeps turning the screen back on every X seconds (taking root control for SOMETHING) and Wakelock detector says the phone is not going into enough deep sleep (kinda like me, hahaha)

Weirdest black screen issue, tried everything ....

Non rooted, T mobile branded 3 month old note 8. No water damange, no drops etc.
Using chrome one miniute, set the phone down to watch a movie on my tablet, picked up the phone to check messages and boom. Screen is off. The phone works, I can even answer calls because I know where the answer button is on the screen, haptic feedback works, all indicator lights work. The phone screen remains off.
Tried a soft reset (tried hard reset too the best I could being I cant see the screen) and the phone seems to reset based on the vibration and indicator light patters but the screen remains off. It's as if a physical connection between the screen and the brains of the phone has been severed. Literaraly the weirdest thing that has happened to me in a decade of Android phone ownership.
Googled all the black screen issues with these phones and most of them are resolved with just a soft reset... some said that the phone is in it's lowest dimmed state and go to a dark room and i'll see it faintly and then can increase brightness... no luck...
Has anyone experienced this?
I would say it's a warranty job, just tried turning my brightness to zero and you can still see the screen.
I did have a similar problem on an old note that had root and custom rom though but I had somehow set the volume rocker to control brightness and it had lowered itself to minimum in my pocket

Try pressing and holding Volume down and power button for 5 to 7 seconds to force power off, then try to boot to download mode Volume Down + Bixby + Power button and see if the download mode screen shows......if not then probably a bad screen.

Yeah that sucks, i can imagine..... i too hate the idea of refurbished units being swapped for warranty....bs, should be brand new unit!
Sent from my God Mode 8
so I had it replaced under warranty through T mobile. Refurb phone will come in today. One quesion. Should I let the Tmobile techs do the data/settings transfer from old phone to new one or just do everything myself from scratch (which will obviously take longer).
This happened to my phone twice for the past month or so. (both in Nougat and Oreo - Non rooted) Black screen but phone seems to be responding -- I can receive calls and notifications etc -- And force reboot doesn't fix it. I've also tried drainging the phone when it first happened to me but doesn't work. HOWEVER, it gets okay so randomly. Like I just left it for couple of hours and it just worked when I hit the power button.
I did tried bringing the device to Samsung but what they did is to just manually upgrade/reset the software in their end which I could have done in my part but I just let them do it. They told me to come back if it happens again which is kinda BS.
I can conveniently say this is a Hardware issue. I will wait for it to happen again on my phone and request for a replacement. Phone is 4 months old when it first happened.
I have the same issue with blank screen but phone is working.
It started couple of weeks after i dropped my phone on the ground. There is black dot on my screen and broken glass but phone was working ok and was still pretty usable. But then it started:
Display works fine but when i switch display of, lock the phone or display switched because of its timer it didn come switch on... But phone works, i can use it with blank (black) screen.
I had to do force restart so the display will turn on with samsung logo and booting screen, and keep on till another switch of.
I was trying every setting (but no hard reset) and then i found a little hack:
When you turn on the "Always On Display" (AOD) function you can let the screen switch off or do it manually, wait for 1-2 sec and always on display will come up to the screen. Then when you press home button or lock button screen will swtich on normally. YOu can type pin and use phone witch screen working. But when you try to unlock from "AOD" with your finger or your eyes it unlock but with screen black.
So i was using it like this. everytime you need to wait second untill AOD comes up, but it was working fine.
Problem nu 2 is that now it stop working, AOD is working but when i want to switch screen on from AOD it shows black screen and phone is working on blind.
So everytime after my screen goes black or to AOD i have to unlock the phone blindly and "Force restart" it and have to keep waiting until boot, and then have to never let phone to screen of.
Its not usuable.
¨
Now what do you think? Is it hardware problem or software problem? Because screen is working but randomly. The black dot of dead pixels on the screen is getting slightly bigger in time (about 1 year) but its like 1.5cm round. Maybe this cause the problem? And why hack with AOD was working for half a year and then stoped working? There wasnt any updates right before, but i tried to install some apps (non display related) so ill try to uninstall them.
Hawe you got any idea if i can repair it on my own even if i loose the waterproofability?
Or can it be replaced for free if i have a warranty? (I dont have insurance)
Thanks for your tips guys.

If you're under warranty it will likely be a free repair, unless they find other damage. Like moisture damage.
As far as fixing it yourself, it's just about as cheap to have Samsung do it than it is to buy the parts yourself. It's $229 for Samsung to do it, and you'll maintain the water resistance rating.
same has happened to me

This has just happened to my note 8 too. I was about to update it and had started it. set my phone down and picked it up and phone screen is black but can hear the haptic feedback.
I can only see the lock screen and the notifications. Everytime I try to unlock my phone I only get to see a glimpse of the notescreen and then the screen turns black. Even when I try to go to camera through the lock screen the screen goes black too. When I charge my phone it heats up so I haven't really charged it as well. Has this also happened to anyone? It seems as if the phone's sensitivity still works in all places but when I unlock it the screen just goes black.
I also have problem of freezings and always rebooting. Tried soft and hard resets/factory reset. Still same problem. This phone has hardware issue. Do not buy.
I realize this thread is quite old but I have this exact same issue now. I have managed to discover some other information by playing around with various settings which are noted below. To begin with, I was able to used the AOD hack posted above for a while but it no longer works. The only way I can get my screen to come back is with a soft reset - but as soon as the screen times out or i turn it off, it goes black, with or without AOD enable. All the on screen buttons still work as well as the haptic feedback - I just can't see anything.
Now on to what I have found:
One thing I have found is if I turn off adaptive screen brightness and crank the brightness slider to the right, when it goes black I can faintly see some of the buttons - enough that I can turn the phone off or restart it from the power menu (If I switch the default setting to night that also helps to see the buttons a bit better). Also, if I enable night mode I can also see the brightness slider faintly but when I slide it left, it just makes the screen completely black and when I slide it right, it only returns it to the very faint brightness level.
So at this point I am stuck. To summarize the issue:
1. When the screen either times out or turns off, it is still "alive" but goes black. It will not return to normal brightness.
2. Turning off adaptive brightness and cranking brightness slider to right allows you to see faint buttons after screen times out but won't return to normal brightness.
3. Enabling night mode helps to see the faint buttons, in particular the brightness slider a bit better. However the screen still cannot return to normal brightness.
4. The only way to get the screen back to full brightness (albeit temporarily until the next timeout) is to turn off the phone or reset from the power menu; or soft reset holding volume down + power simultaneously.
Hopefully someone else has figured out a way to recover this. I am on Android 9 with Samsung UI 1.0
Phone is completely stock, never rooted and completely out of warranty.
