I turned the flash off to get the light on the keyboard, but the LCD screen glares

I predict this thread may die .__.

The original AT&T keys was ripped out off the Tilt, got destroyed
Behind the keyboard keys is an adhesive (sticky) layer that sticked to...
The flex board, plastic keys with adhesive will be laid on top of this
(This is a broken flex that ripped out of the Tilt. This flex is permanently adhesive to the original qwerty housing, rip it out will break the flex, which I did... but I have another one so I am safe)

Yup!!!
I just want to encourage someone to hack the second camera on to the Tilt!!!
I wanna see it happen!!! PwEASE HACK THAT SECOND CAM, SOMEONE... without bricking the phone, ofcourse

I think a safer option would be to sell the Tilt and then buy a model that has the front camera.

That's not fun, beside ~ it's a better deal to get a Tilt for way cheaper, especially refurbished ~ then hack it

But it's still kool to have a front camera for self-shoot photos.
Branded phone are often a downgrade, from design to tech >: ( They either screw it up with bad colors ~ or downgrade something.
The T-Mobile version is so feminine ~ and AT&T decided to have silver keys in between black keys?!!! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!!!
I don't care what it is, it's just kool to unbrand a branded phone!!! Branded phones (modified by some non-artist-eyes marketing retard) are often not as kool as the original factory design.

Hehe.
I have an idea for you: Buy a TyTN II (with front camera). Dismantle it. Open your Tilt, remove everything, and drill a hole in the front plate. Take what was in the TytN II, put it in the Tilt case. There you'll have a modded Tilt with front camera
Or you could just keep the TyTN II.

There have already been numerous threads about it, and if all those who have had that idea gave up, there must be a reason. One is that front cams are pretty much impossible to find. Another if I remember well is that there's no connection for the cam in the Tilt anyway, so you'd have to replace enough components to end with what I was actually saying earlier, a TyTN II in a Tilt case.
In the end, why don't you just try it yourself if you want it so badly?

Well, spending for a TyTN is too expensive, spending on a Tilt make sense during this hard time. With the right mind and skill, I think anything is possible... next attempt, making the Kaiser into a Helio Duo slider ~ YEAH!!! LOL, jk ~ ... hrrmmm... maybe it's possible ... let's see...

RU high on caffeine or something? JK
I wouldn't call keyboard swapping a hack really... :/ additional ram, leds, irda, speakers, anything... but an ordinary swap one for another?? meh....

I for one think that this thread is a Good Thing®. It's nice to see people still doing things with the Tilt (and Kaiser in general). Some of us like the tilting screen!
Thanks kaiser_user, and let's see some more hacks!

Well.. I'm an electronics engineer, and hacking is nearly second nature for me... adding backlight control to HDTV, adding internal 3G modem to laptop, adding remote trigger to digicam,...
But my Kaiser is one of the very rare of my electronic devices that hasn't even been dismantled once. Simply because I wouldn't see what to do to it as it's fine for me as it is, I've had no problem with it, etc.
BTW, mine is a TyTN II with front camera, I got one because it was just frustrating me to buy a tilt without one... and I've never used it even once. So, it wouldn't be a hack I'd consider either...

New screens

My own screen has some scuffs and scratches, and i was looking for a new one. Now i know because of my old job that having it replaced at a repair-center (i worked at one) that will cost me something like 160 euro's.
But now i found a company (www.iiparts.com) on internet that sells the "samsung LTP280QV" displays for $75 a piece (for minimum of 5 pieces) and thats a good price i think.
These displays are used in the wizard and the magician ( :!: but Toppoly TD028STEB1 is also used, and they are not interchangeable :!: )
Maybe if there is enough interest for those displays we could buy some together (saves a lot of postage costs  )?
It is not my goal to make money out of this, but to all save money.
So if anyone who is seriously interested could PM me, then i'll see if its worth it.
Goodluck.

That's not what he is asking guys.
There are a lot of users who won't use protectors because of disadvantages with it.
So if anyone is interested in a new display and don’t mind to do some DIY then please add your thread.

thnks drifter, thats what i want to say. And as i saw on the forum, there are a lot of people who dropped their device and have a broken LCD. For them it's also a lot cheaper, and DIY doesn't matter for them because their warranty is already voided because of dropping it.
.....
I already have sent my 9100 to the repair center....
If they will ask me a lot, I will contact you soon.
Today I got back my PDA....
I have disassembled it to check the type of the screen but it is a "Toppoly TD028STEB1"
Do someone know where to buy this kind of screen?

BUMP!
Hallo?!?!?
anyone?
is there anybody out there?
My question is there a screen which has decent sensitivity. I have had two T-Mobile MDAs and both are pretty poor when it comes to screen tap sensitivity. Also I have a continuous problem with alignment. After about a week I have to carry out a hard reset. Example if I am searching in my contacts database and use the scroll bar on the right side of the screen instead of scrolling the contact the stylus is adjacent to is selected. I have tried screen recalibration and that does not correct the issue. The only resolution is to clear storage and that is getting very aggrivating. Any suggestions. I am running Mr. Clean rev 2.4a. Am I looking at a software glitch or a bad screen... My guess is a substandard screen.
Bump again....
I still need to get the screen!!!!!!
Do you know if there's an easy way to determine which screen is installed without having to disassemble the phone? My Wizard100 (Cing2125) is fairly new and I just want to avoid disassembly unless it is really, really, really needed...
Sorry but I have no idea how to get that info without "explode" the PDA.
It will help to keep the guarantee as valid
Taking the Magician and Wizard apart
Hi,
How easy is it to take the magician and wizard apart?
...and put back together
I've looked on the net for hours and not found any instructions. On this site I have seen people talk of repairing their phones but no guides or indication of how easy/hard it is
thanks,
Graham.
OK, I found the service manual for the wizard at:
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard/Docs_Tutorials/Wizard_Service_Manual.pdf
but what about the Magician?
thanks,
Graham.

T-Mobile Vario III - front panel buttons contoured?

I can't get over to a phone shop to check right now, but could someone let me know whether the buttons on the UK T-Mobile Vario III variant of the Kaiser are flat or contoured?
Even T-Mobile's own website seems confused, with most photos showing the standard:

but others showing a nasty flattened version which would be more difficult to operate by touch (as I do my current phone):
So which version is accurate? With a bit of luck I'll be leaving my trusty old Vario (Wizard) behind and moving in with you all in this forum tomorrow.
What else should I know, I wonder? I'm sure I'll get into ROM upgrading soon - which actually looks easier than with my older phone from the FAQ here.
Thanks for anyone's help.
Andre
mine are flat. The lower picture is correct.
dunno about the UK, but t-mob Holland gives you the flattend version. I quite like it though..
but before you run off to the shop to get a Vario3 aka Kaiser, i suggest you do some more reading at the forum about the driver issue's.
The buttons for the Vario III are flat.
However, you could always get the regular Kaiser/TyTN II buttons from here:

Darn, WTF would they want to do that?!
I assumed that the 'flat' pictures were of some sort of pre-production prototye, as most of the T-Mobile website shows the normal buttons. I wonder if the buttons can be replaced with the standard arrangement of buttons that everyone else has?
[Edit: thanks for the info Teppic. I have read about the video driver issues, but I assume it will still be a lot faster than my current Vario, until someone gets the problems sorted out?]
Andre
your assumption on your old Vario being slower is somewhat, lets say ..wrongish
i have a Vario, Universal and a Vario3, can't say the Vario3 wins anywhere on performance.

Oh. So they really have b*ggered the Kaiser up big time then?
My current Vario will play video (ish), but without a decent network speed that's a kinda moot point. I assumed that the more than double clock speed would make enough difference to improve matters even without optimised drivers.

The simple answer is
On "paper" the Vario III is superior to its predecessors
In practice "HTC" didnt do a good job on the software side, and poor video performance (drivers) impacts all aspects of the phone, from camera to open/close screen changes.
At this stage, given HTC's statement on them not supplying new drivers/software and the fact they now want to state that hardware that they quoted in press releases as being in the phone are now not present and "may be" in future products.
I would not upgrade to any HTC products, keep your Vario, stay on the same contract etc until you see a phone you like (but avoid HTC)

I did decide to go for the Vario III in the end, and it's not too bad in general performance terms (at least as good as my original Vario I guess, although of course it should be a lot faster, but hey).
I took a look at the link you suggested though, and although it states that this part is for the TyTn II, the button layout in the photo is different (the red and green phone buttons are at the bottom of the keypad rather than the top for example). I'd still like to put on the original contoured buttons rather than the flat T-Mobile ones, but not sure whether this part is correct...?
(I assume that fitting it will be easy enough - it looks like four screws on the back of the sliding front section should allow the whole of the silver bezel to be removed?)
Andre
I never noticed that the call and end call buttons were inverted on that replacement keypad!
I've just done a Google search and every replacement keypad I've seen seems to be the same.
You could always try these guys to see if they can supply you with the correct one: http://www.apexlaptops.co.uk/. They are based in Kent. (I will admit though that I've never tried them, but I was looking for somewhere that would repair the USB port on my eBay purchased phone before I managed to fix the bent pin on it myself).
Give them a call to see if they can help out. The worst they can do is say "no".
Thanks, I might give them a call as their website is a bit out of date and doesn't mention the recent handsets. I might also email that US supplier and ask if they've maybe used a photo of the wrong keypad?
Do you know if fitting is simple, or is it a pain to get the cover off & then catch a whole load of little springs which bounce everywhere...
Andre
The UK O2 version (XDA Stellar) has contoured buttons, as does (I believe) the Vodafone (v1615)

Front Camera Hotness

Okay, so I finally did it. This evening after work I took my phone (Att Tilt), some torx drivers, some tiny philips and sat down at my desk. With a beer in hand, my phone in pieces, and the front camera from a kaiser on the desk in front of me, I made awesome happen.
Now, the fact that I was three or four beers deep by the time I finished probably contributed to the hairline crack in my case near the new camera, but that's nothing some superglue won't fix. At any rate, my Att Tilt now has a front camera, and it was auto recognized by the camera software. Needless to say, this is awesome - the next step is to flash a rom that supports all the nifty things I can do with a front facing camera, and make the most of what I now have.
Here's where I get confused, though - all my poking about on the forum and elsewhere seemed to say that this wasn't possible - that the tilt /could not/ be modified to have a front camera. Was I misreading things that badly?
If it helps, I've got some very blurry pictures (my camera's a piece of junk), and might take some more if people want.
Love to hear back.
Nice work Harrson...BTW, a few questions...
Do you have to dismantle the whole phone or can you do it just by removing the torx screws behind the sliding screen?
And is the front camera of the tilt modular? cause i hawked a camera off an old treo 650 and I know it's angled diferrently from the tilt as to the wire but do you just pop it on the front camera module? thanks

I was not able to find a method of removing the front cover by itself, and had to go through the entire disassembly (just about) as detailed at Mike Channon's website, removing all those damned tiny screws and bending distressingly thin pieces of plastic to get to the front case.
The front camera is modular, yes - it's a tiny little thing comprised of a small camera(about the size of a pea or so) mounted on a flat flexible cable kind of thing, which terminates in one of those miniature plugs that you find elsewhere inside the phone. The socket lives under the front cover, right next to the power/wifi/bluetooth LEDs near the earpiece.
On my Tilt, the cavity that was intended to hold the camera had been filled by a cube of black foam rubber that had been glued to the board (which you can kind of see in my crappy picture). I removed that, plugged in the camera, and reassembled.
(I apologize for the atrocious pictures - as I said, the camera's a piece of junk)

As to using the camera from another HTC phone, I called HTC about using the one from the TYTN 1 (which I'd bought off of ebay without knowing any better), and I was told that the part numbers were different. Now, I have no idea whether or not the parts are technically compatible (but geometrically different), or if they're just no good for each other (like alcohol and me).
Sweet!
That's pretty sweet! What are you using the front camera for?

Um... Not much, actually. Not yet, anyway.
See, the next step in my plan was to flash my rom to something with a 3g dialer and something a damn sight quicker than the stock rom - I've been eyeing the latest stable Phoenix release for a while now, but I admit that I've been hesitant for fear of bricking my phone.
Really, I've just been showing it off, and hoping that someone who sees it will ask "Oh, cool! Are you using it with application X?" and inadvertently give me a good idea, and then I can say "Application X? That's old news - I haven't used application X in, like, months!" And then I'll go download application X immediately.
In truth, I haven't been able to find all that much in the way of video chat for Windows Mobile, whether over wifi or 3g.
Anyone heard of anything good?
Ignore this post - deleted duplicate of above.

My Kaiser/Tilt from ebay (Are all Kaisers like this?)

Alright here are some key things I need to fix on my "excellent condition" kaiser..........
I apologize in advance as I need to vent a bit But any help/advice would be much appreciated.
1. Battery life is pretty bad, lets say if I leave just the screen on, it drains about 1-5% per minute. Meaning I have to keep it plugged in whenever I am not using it. (I have SPB Shell which is supposed to drain batteries a bit more... Can't be this bad though...)
2. Camera does not function whatsoever, all I get is a neat black screen with a laggy camera interface for some reason. (Previous owner flashed to WM 6.1, possible cause?)
3. I think I've had about three successful calls in around 2 weeks of using the phone, every other call it appears I have answered it, but I hear nothing and neither does the other person. At this point I reboot and try to call the person back, so I only use the Kaiser for texting. (Also due to the flash perhaps?)
4. No idea how to work the GSP, so far it only works when I have a wifi connection with google maps (no data plan) and when it does it only give me a very rough general location, basically it shows me that I'm somewhere in my neighbourhood. Don't know if there is a standard program included (without monthly fees) or I have to find 3rd party software, or pay monthly fees for the one included which I'm not going to do.
Other problems....
5. The sliding hinge is very loose, the gap between the screen and keyboard when slid closed is at least 1mm wide normally.
6. The tilting has a hard time staying tilted, I always keep a finger behind the screen and the back of the keyboard.
7. Dpad & face buttons are loose and can slide around a bit.
8. The screen orientation gets confused fairly often and stays in landscape mode, requiring reset.
9. The AT&T animated bootup logo is <expletive>. I reset the Kaiser very often from crashes, dead calls, wrong orientation, broken camera, and dead batteries and the bootup animation very cleverly include sounds so everyone around can hear me reboot my piece of <expletive> 7 times a day even though I have it set to mute.
10. I am very disapointed how MS still has such a hard time making a proper os suitible for a mobile phone and just how little they have improved since my old WM2003se phone and Dell Axim, they clearly have the most experience yet they still cannot see how lame their OS really is compared to the... sigh... iphone, get your act together MS... Please? Keep your superior compatibility and excellent user created/custom community but please, please, ditch the lame archaic UI, its that easy. The real problem I have is that even all the fancy mods in the world cannot hide how ugly and user unfriendly this windows mobile OS is, heres hoping WM7....
11. And I thought my HTC Magician was a large phone..........
You Poor Guy
Wow that sucks for you, sounds like not only did the flashing of the rom was bad or a bad rom(unfinished), and like the phone has been taken apart and was not put together correctly. My tilt is great I got WM6.5 and the new SBP Shell 3.0, No problems here at all. You need most likely depending on your experience is to take it apart and tighten all screws make sure the camera is plugged in and sound like the dpad buttons might need some super glue to hold the frame (of the buttons) to the case.
Then just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
when your done go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
Try a Hard Reset so you can start clean and go from there.
And remember

It sounds like the camera and call issue is caused by an incorrect ROM / raido match. Try flashing a new ROM and radio meant for eachother. For the loose parts, find a disassembly guide, A T5, T6, and 00 screwdriver and take the phone down so you can retighten the mechanism.
hmm thanks for all the help! looking at the rom/radio forum, how exactly do you decide which rom or radio to go with? seems like there are so many to choose from, I feel like such a noob even though I have flashed my ds and my old axim before i'm not entirely sure what these roms are, pre loaded/updated os's or something??
I agree though it looks like a bad rom/radio, Ill see what I can do about that and the loose parts...
Yeah this is the first time I got burnt with ebay, sucks cuz i had a few options but i went with the seller with the best communication as the others weren't replying, then i finally got a reply from a cheaper phone that seemed to be a much better choice hours later, after that i had a bad feeling and unfortunately it came true... oh well, this phone is a lot fatter and heavier than i hoped, i dunno i swore to get a smaller phone than my magician... meh either way i'll make do with what i have, sigh... thanks again.

I assumed it was the screen itself. Is the screen plastic or glass. I would think plastic, but who knows. Google it. Most screens include the digitizer when the screen is purchased. Personally I would replace both at the same time if cheap enough. You'll have the phone apart anyway, If you plan on doing it yourself.
I found it fun & a bit educational. might have to order a tool or 2 but there very cheap. Be careful of the ribbon connectors, you can break them very easily.
Wow sorry to see the HTC Dream/G1 suffer the way it did.
I think its time to hang up the phone for good.
Save the money you would pay to fix it and move onto something newer.

Is that really a fair comparison ? It's a non-rooted G1 running 1.6. I'd like to see the results on a rooted/flashed w/Froyo 2.2 Also not overclocked like some of them.
Screens are cheap, relatively easy to install fix for a $400 phone. Seems a waste to "hang it up".
Interesting info @ site though.

The HTC Dream/G1 is dead last in benchmarks.
Unless he can find a screen for dirt cheap I believe it would be a waste of cash.
If he is eligible for a full upgrade discount from his provider let him decide for himself.

Agreed, it is his decision.
Root/Flash and overclock the G1 and your saying it will still be dead last ?
So another words, you break your $400 phone and "you" would just buy a new one ?
