g1 questions (probably frequently asked:) - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Hello,
I am thinking about buying myself T-mobile G1. What I need to know before that is:
firstly: is there any way to switch off constant internet connection on G1 as the internet services in my country are quite expensive and I would like to have control over them? I dont really need sync with my google account (I see some other advateges on this phone than "just" that) and would like to use Internet only when i really need it (not when G1 thinks I need
secondly: is there any way to update G1 OS via standard PC? As far as I heard each update weighs some MB, which i prefer to download on my PC and then to G1
I've been looking for answers to my questions over the Internet (xda developers etc) but didn't really find a direct answer.
Would appreciate your time and effort.
Yours Sincerely

updating the os via pc, u have to actually do the SD card method to update ur os... and search xda for the newest one and they include instructions for it.. i just update last night lol

Installing Blackberry Connect

Hi, I have done a lot of searching on this topic, but haven't been able to find anything definitive on the best way to install blackberry connect. I am about to pick up a Siemens SX66 (Cingular version, but will be using on Tmobile) and want to make sure that I will be able to get the blackberry functionality to work.
I have a few questions/comments/observations that I would love to get everyones feedback on. If there something out there that explains how to get it working, I am sorry and please feel free to point me in the right direction.
1. My understanding is that the blackberry connect software is in the extended rom. So far I have been able to find the following cab files which I believe have the blackberry software: htc_pocketpc_tmo_germany_2.0.0.25-18.cab, HTC_PocketPC_TMO_Austria_Germany_Load_Working.cab and htc_pocketpc_tmo_england_2.0.0.25-18.cab. Not sure what else is in here, but it looks like the blackberry client is there as well.
2. If I use one of those roms, what language will the software be? Will have to use the tmobile UK version for english?
3. I have been reading about people have problems with the phone rom. These are post from a while back, it seems that the UK blackberry client need version 1.0 and the german version need 1.06? Is this correct or can I use the lasted phone rom?
4. Is there any limitations on the System Rom or Extended Rom? Do I need a specific version? I want to make sure I have english on the device though.
5. Let's say I do get all the right software. Is there a problem in the US where Blackberry won't register Blackberry Connect PINs? I was reading in another forum that someone was having a problem with this on their SX66 and also I am upgrading from a Sony Ericsson P910a where I couldn't get my PIN added to Blackberry servers.
The main reason I want the device is to replace my blackberry and this is extremely important. Other functionality is awesome, but secondary as I need to make sure I have access to my corporate email.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
There are 2 threads in the blue angel section that have Blackberry connect ih the title. Might be of help.
Thanks saw those posts after, I figured the info would be in this section. I posted some questions there as well, but any help would be appreciated. Not sure if this is going to work....oh well..
To the best of my knowledge...
NOBODY has been able to make the BB Connect software work on SX66 on Cingular.
I've all but given up. Maybe WM2005 will be different...
Crap, though I take it the problem is Cingular not the phone right? Do you know if anyone has been able to get it to work on T-Mobile? What is the problem you are having, is it the PIN / IMEI registration issue?
that's certainly a part of it...
pin/imei, software (nothing supported). The blackberry connect desktop software for XDA2 is a couple years old and does not let you change the PIN.
No way to configure, so you're hosed. The O2 software on the pocket pc is also locked to an O2 blackberry APN. No way to change that either.
It's possible that somebody somewhere has taken the T-Mobile German MDAIII software -- and somehow obtained the T-Mobile desktop software -- and translated both --
but I doubt it! Definitely not to be found anywhere on this site...
Of course, I'D LOVE TO BE PROVEN WRONG, as this has been the biggest issue for me since I got this bloody device.
Bottom line: either use the crap XpressMail redirector product that Cingular offers, or use IMAP/POP on a "pull" basis. Neither way works well. We're screwed until Cingular steps up to the plate or until some brave soul on this board saves us all!

Umm i hate to say this but also that PIN number is alos tied to a carrier, and RIM will NOT release that PIN number to be used on another carrier's network, i know, i am a data support rep with Cingular. if you want something just like the Blackberry then go pay and get the GoodLink solution, otherwise i wouldnt complain about something free that cingular offers, I use it and i agree it isnt the best but works pretty damn well considering it FREE!!! for the PErsonal Edition. Besides, if you wanted to use the BWC (BlackBerry Web client) it isnt exactly Push either, the only forms available are the Redirector and the BES, but considering Congular is offering a solution for FREE i woulnt complain if i were you. If you wanna get mad at not having that solution get mad at RIM not Cingular...... :!:
Re: that's certainly a part of it...
Well I have the desktop software in english and just installed the german software on my sx66. I think I got it to connect but its hard to tell. Iwonder if there is any other software out there....

Damm, I actually just found the software for 2.0 software for Tmobile UK. Now it only gets an IP address for two seconds then looses it. I think its the same problem I had with my p910a I can't get the server to recognize it.
Please prove me wrong!
Figure out how to make this work, and you'll be the hero of every Cingular / SX66 user on this board!
I am getting much closer now, I hacked (hex edit) one of the dll files to point to an IP address of 206.51.26.192 instead of 206.51.26.189. I know the .192 is the right address from my old blackberry. Now I actually stay live on the APN with an IP address and everything, where before I would get one for a second and get kicked out. I think it's a matter of registering it now. If anyone wants to try this dll, replace the one in the windows directory. Also I will upload the version of blackberry connect I am using... Please try as well...
Here is the dll I mentioned...replace this with the one in windows directory
Seem s like you are getting somewere on this issue.
Feel like writing a How to so that we can post it on wiki?
If you need help PM me I can also move what ever files that you like on the FTP site.
Thanks, just haven't gotten it to work totally yet, but that may just need a call to Tmobile to ask them to set it up. I have made progress in the fact that my blackberry.net apn now stays connected, where before it would disconnect after a minute or two. I think I am half way there. Need some more people to play around who have tried before to see if they get anywhere...
Can you also post the desktop software version you're using?
There hasn't been a recent posting of the BB Config software in quite some time...
Thanks!
It's too large, check the ftp server. look for somethign called bb_desktop_sw_mda3_20.exe It's up there somewhere.... poke around uploads as well...
Oh wait... I got it from tmobile directly, hehehe...

So you're using the German version?
Make it work, and I won't care what language it's in!
I agree, first I tried the german one, before I found the Tmobile Uk one. Did you try downloading everything and installing?
yup...
still can't make it work on my end... although I haven't changed anything in Hex...
Try the dll I fixed up also, let me know if it makes any difference....

Diamond as Modem with O2

hi guys i just added the unlimited web browsing option with o2 on my diamond as we moved into a new flat and we dont have braodband yet.
o2 said i cant use my phone as a modem though, they dont allow you to connect to the net via your computer. i think she meant if i put the sim card into a usb modem.
But im wondering can anyone confirm whether or not i will be charged extra for syncing my diamond to my laptop and using the phone as my modem??
thanks
anyone?.....................
I don't see how they would know?
Other than the excessive downloading...
hey,
i do this all the time and they never know. do you have unlimited web on phone?
You can indeed connect your phone to your pc and use it as a modem to access the internet. When you connect your phone to your pc you should have the option to choose "internet sharing" mode which allows this. However although i have an XDA Ignito I am running a cooked rom and i'm not sure if "internet sharing" is available as an option on the standard o2 rom. Either way if you do have that option it wont cost you anything as long as you keep within the fair usage policy.
thanks guys, i basically used it yesterday and checked my charges today and no extra charges so all seems ok. i have the unlimited web, run a cooked rom with the internet sharing option on a diamond so works fine and is actually quite fast!
i think you are right if you use it a lot to download films etc they will find out, shame but never mind hopefully sky will hurry up and install our BB soon
Thanks again for the help!

New to G1 and need your help! :)

Hello,
My name is Dror and I’m totally new here
I’ll be travelling in the US for 3 months (starting next week), and I’m planning to buy a G1 phone and use it on the T-Mobile network for that time (and then take it with me back home). I’ll bring my microSDHC card with some documents and music with me, and I’d also like to install Hebrew fonts. I’ll use the phone mostly for emails, IM, browsing, maps and of course – talking.
I’ve already ran some searches in the forum, but since I’ve never had a smartphones, and I’m not a developer or a linux user, I’m getting quite confused. I guess I’m also quite unaware of other important software I should install.
So basically, my questions are –
What should I do when I get the phone? Should I root it first, and which version should I upgrade it to afterwards (RC33, JF1.43, ADP1.1 – what is that, and what do I need?)?
Are there any recommended applications I should download (besides the Hebrew fonts), and how do I install them, assuming I don’t know even the basics about the interface?
I know that probably all of the answers to my questions are somewhere in the forum, but I simply don’t know how to look for them… and when I do find answers, I don’t always understand them.
Also, it might not have a lot to do with developing, but I’d really appreciate your tips regarding how to use the features of the phone (email, IM, calls…) with minimum cost, what plans should I ask from T-Mobile (keeping in mind its only for 3 months) or where is the best place to buy the handset in LA.
Thanks a lot for your help and patience!
Dror
1. I would suggest rooting your phone before installing any apps, as downgrading to RC30 will erase everything you have prior.
2. Off the top of my head I can think of:
SnapPhoto - Camera app replacement
Craigsphone - Craigslist on your phone. duh.
The Weather Channel - Self explanatory.
ToggleWifi/ToggleGPS/ToggleBlu - turns on or off certain phone functionality in one press rather then 4.
iMeem - Internet Radio
Shazam - Song ID
3. Here in the US you pick a voice plan and a then one of two data plans specific to the G1:
$24.99 for unlimited data + 400 texts
$34.99 for unlimited data and texts
I personally have the cheapest of both the voice and data plans and it runs me about $55/mth with taxes and all.
If your only staying here for three months, your going to have to ask for something called "FlexPay". Basically, you pay the full unsubsidized cost of the phone ($399) and you aren't locked into a service you won't be able to use back home.
Hope that helps.
I dont think you can use flex pay and still get the G1 data plans, but not 100% sure.
The wiki will explain the difference between the different JF builds and how to go about installing them.
Everything written by others is very true.
For hebrew fonts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480964
Also get task manager from the market place. By the way, you can unlock any t-mobile phone after 90 days of membership.

actually that bit about flex pay is incorrect.. Im on flex pay and have unlimited internet.
Thanks
Your answers really help me, so thanks a lot
A few more questions:
- If I understand correctly, I have to: move whatever I have on the memory card to a computer, format the card, downgrade to RC29 and root it, and then upgrade back to the latest version possible (RC33) using JFv1.43. 1st - am I right? have I mixed things up/missed anything? Is JFv1.43 the version that suits my needs (as I said before, I'm no developer)? 2nd - when do I install the fonts and other applications?
- Are the application you've mentioned available for free on the market/somewhere else? is there anything special I need to do to install them except downloading (like accessing a certain interface)?
Hope my questions make sense
Thanks,
Dror

new here at XDA and newbie with X1i Xperia

hello
i orderd this incredable S.phone from some store that's selling 2nd hand
cellphones.
the only smartphones that i had was Nokia's N80\N95-8GB\N73\N82
but those are symbians, now im facing with new kind of phone with WinMobile
i need to recive in 2-3 weeks
im somewhat consorned by those "Cracks" and "Black screen" while sliding the
phone.
all i know that im getting the black version of the phone the owner cannot tell
me what version of the phone he holds
are there any marks that i need to search to know what version of the phone
it is? (by mean version i meant model's X1i\X1c\X1a)
im using gsm network only i have no need in 3G.
the point is :
what are the differences between the model's X1i\X1c\X1a ?
sry for my bad english
also if u can be kind to tell me
* how long the battery hold a charge ?
* the build quality of the phone ?
* can i put hebrew language ?
* can i upgrade to WinMob 6.5 ?
* is it a good phone ?
thank u very much guys
with best regards
Israel ben david
x1i is x1 international which support 30fps cam capture and the 900/1800/1900/2100 frequencies the international world use
x1a is x1 American which because of a lawsuit with broadcom only support 15fps cam capture and the American frequencies which are 850/1900/2100
like i said
is there any way to know which model i have?
You won't be able to tell by looking at it. It's all the same physically. You'll be able to tell by checking out the phone information under the phone settings (I can't remember and can't check because my phone has succumbed to its second flex ribbon failure). From your description of the phone, it's going to be a X1i/X1c just because they don't make the X1a in black. (Unless the seller disassembled the phone and put on a black housing on the X1a, which I doubt) Now what are differences between X1i & X1c? I didn't even know they had an X1c!!! I think they are the same phone and nothing to worry about.
also i have messed with roms that will change it from x1i to x1a and yada yada.
the biggest thing you will find is your getting alot of power now. this phone does everything.
the X1c is for China :\
that's the one that i'v bought the very one
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250635158353&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
but! the seller said that it's an Vodafone's Xperia and its unlocked and had
"3" network.
that means that the phone is X1i .
look i dont know much about "Roms" (the Drink is enough though ) i want to
get rid the most of the bugs in this phone.
i'v heard that can be a problem with Multitasking when making calls and do other stuff as some 1 said the phone freezes :\
how does it compare to other phone in his class like the HTC TOUCH PRO and the HTC HD\HD2?
and another Quastion to u guys:
if i'll update the phones firmware will it change the language? as i know the phones has 2 OS :
I. SE OS
II. WM OS
im a bit confused...
ok first off you must understand,
problems posted are not always sterotypical.
i have 2 xperias, and i have hacked the hell out of them. ran numerous roms, numerous programs.
never had a problem with either of them.
i have also had a touch pro, and in my opinion its far better than the touch pro.
if you read the threads about 5 people having issues with this or that, what your not reading is the thousand people who arent having those problems.
im not sure what you mean by 2 operating systems.
it only runs one.
windows mobile
and there is a program built by sony called xperia panels.
its not an OS its a GUI.
the rom i run removed that completely as i do not use it therefore wanted the space.
every question you ask will always have 2 responses one negative and one positive.
the only true way to answer your questions is to answer them yourself with phone in hand.
i dont mean to be harsh, but it seems to me you purchased something without really knowing what you purchased.
and are looking for some comfort by asking and reading on the forums.
touch pro has issues with the slide out keyboard.
that doesnt mean every single touch pro will have it.
xperia people say their having issues with case cracks.
but how are these people using their phones?
everything is based on how the user uses the phone.
the very same thing can be asked about different laptops.
some people will say acer is junk, some will say its the best thing out.
all i can tell you is if you get a phone is good condition, and you get it to work on your cell provider... the rest is up to you on how your expeirence will be.
once u spend some of ur time here reading, u'll know what we're talkin bout and at 100% chance of flasing custom rom which is making the xperia even more better! The Sticky thread is usually that u need to read first.
I own Xperia X1i for about half-year and i am generally happy with it... there are some issues in design, making the phone less sturdy than for example iPhone, but i guess every QWERTY-keyboard device is more fragile than those without it... use it carefully, as any enough hard fall on ground can be fatal (happened to me, but they accepted it as warranty repair )
Xperia's main storage capacity is very limited (about 200 MBs), but stock MicroSD card has 4 GB of capacity which can be sufficient to many users. If it's not your case, you can expand it up to SanDisk's recently released 32 GB MicroSDs.
In-built speaker has poor play quality (if i compare to old good K750i it sucks hard imo) but stock headphones play nicely and their insulating tube gives them large longevity (at least in my opinion )
Qualcomm CPU provides this phone great performance for running many applications at same time, i usually play music, two IM clients and sometimes do something else (for example playing Warcraft II) so i think you don't have to worry about getting your apps slow (unless they are written very ****ty or you plan to run dragon age: origins on it x) )
In-built Xperia panels provide very nice media player (faaaar better than WMP Mobile imo) - but it lacks equalizer (which sometimes sucks, but i had never found any suitable player).
Battery lifetime never gone under 8hrs in my case, even while using my device intensively, 8hrs should be sufficient, and you can recharge it with any USB cable you find in any USB bus, or in car via "lighter hole" (don't know how to say it in eng hope you know what i mean)
there is crapload of applications for WM devices, many are freeware, making your phone capable to do allmost anything (from web browsing to MySQL administration - whatever gets on your mind...)
o.k guys i'v recived the phone it's really the Xperia X1i it's Vodafone version (also the software is by vodafone branded)
its super amazing!
fast! smooth touch!
now i really have quastions :
*should i update the firmware using the "Update Service" software

*how can i disable peremenatly the data connection 3g/gprs?
its keep saying "connecting 3g\gprs contract connection" i dont use the Internet from my provider (Cellcom) at all
*somtimes the reception fading away i dont know why...its not happans with
any other of my phones (n82,n95-8gb,w810i,w995 and so on)
*how can i get rid the vodafone version and putting a Clean & unbranded version?

1. that's generally up to you, if you intend on keeping stock rom (default SE firmware) I would advice on it to have latest fixes
2. dunno, search PavelX1 in rom dev stickies, all stock (official) roms listed there
3. read here for starters
4. there's a nodata app from modaco around, search for it
5. maybe radio rom version not good for your region, consider updating (have a look e.g. in gtrab rom library thread rom dev stickies) or search
6. as in 2 or flash custom rom
enjoy

some1 said "Murphy's law" ?
agreed with Draken Korin
you can find roms, change radios tons of stuff
but this is for medium to advanced users. do research before you dive in.
i know that its very anoying but can some one guide me what to do to fix the phone?
im a bit afraid to do that its my firms WinMob based phone and i dont want to brick it...
time for some homework then
check stickies in rom dev, focus on biovolt and phenx for tutorials
then continue with olinex and jackleung
after that you will understand better and be less afraid I hope
ya there isnt much we can tell you.
basically you need to determin how far you want to go.
then learn how to go there.
as Draken Korin said. you need to learn now.
better signal equals better radio
roms increase usablity
but not every radio is right for you
not every rom is right for you.
you need to first become comfortable with what your doing before you do anything.
I dont know whare to start
i know the basic but i dont know how to start...
i'll try to use the phone under WIN XP first to update the phone with SEUS
some ppl said that under vista\7 there are problems to update and they
succeed under XP
hope that it will work...
I agree that it's a lot to take in all at once, but the only way to do it is to dive in. Nice as we all can be, no one is going to hold your hand step by step. If we did, you wouldn't learn anything and you'd never be able to handle things yourself. WinMo is a very self-reliant system, so you'll need to learn how to deal with it if things don't go as planned.
Start by browsing the Tweaks sticky; pick out a few things you'd like to do with simple apps at first. Just installing and learning to work with .cab files will speed your learning process up considerably. The more you do, the more you learn. If you start with simple .cab installs, you won't have to worry about bricking the phone. Just don't install anything that wasn't meant for the X1, just in case
done it!
under XP everyting was smoooooooooooooooooth
now,i'll put hebrew language on it and a lot o' stuffff
thank u all ^^

[Q] Connection sharing?

Hi
I've been using HTC phones for years now, always been on O2 and I've always used my various flavours of XDA to connect my laptop to the internet. I am at this very moment using my Polaris via bluetooth to connect to this forum with my laptop, that is my problem.
It it the one function that the Polaris does that I can't make my HD7 do. Am I missing something here? Surely the HD7 can do this, it is a pretty basic function of a phone so I reckon the problem here is the user.
I am currently having to swap my sim card between devices whenever I need to connect to the net with my PC.
I little help here would be very appreciated.

Actually, at this time I dont believe there is any way to tether the HD7 to a PC and if I remember correctly, I believe at this time the bluetooth on the HD7 only works for a headset and nothing else. I may be wrong so Id do a bit more searching but I believe this is what I have read and heard...
Feeling your pain.... My PSTN telephone line is down (taking my broadband with it) so having to stick my sim back in my water damaged HTC HD2 and with a stroke of luck and with the awesome windows controller 'MyMobiler' I can use that as my modem... Was a bit shocked that this was missing with WP7 going after the business (and social) sectors...
