Hi all,
I would like to know if overvolting of msm 7201A is possible on htc diamond. I have overclocked this cpu at 710Mhz with wimospeed. At 729Mhz the device become unstable. So i would try to overvolt thi cpu to obtain better performance. In this way i don't need to buy a new device, because at default settings the htc diamond is very slow, in my opinion.

Give 'em some time. I've been waiting for an answer for my question for a couple months now, .
In all seriousness though, I really don't have an answer for you. I can share my experiences with it though - I used to have an app baked into my ROMs that claimed to be able to overvolt a little bit, but it was all just a hoax. The app didn't actually do anything though, so I'm thinking "no".
Give it time though.

Could be useful overclock RAM.... An HTC HD Mini has only 600 Mhz CPU and go faster and faster then Diamond...

you're right; i tried to set cpu speed at 400Mhz and the system reactivity was the same. Could be useful also increase bus speed. If this overclock is possible i can buy a 1350mah battery so i don't need a new smartphone lol.
I have a question: why I can't overclock my SGS past 1.2 ghz. When I try to set for example 1.3 or 1.4 it freezes and I take out the battery in order to make it work again. Is there something I do wrong, is it a general problem with more SGSs? If somebody can , I really appreciate. Thanks
it is a kernel thing.
the kernel has to support those frequencies.

I tried with tegrak overclocking with voodoo kernel (the application itself doesn't need a kernal that supports those frequencies) and with Supe Optimized Kernel (1.4 ghz) and voltage control and setcpu and is the same result:freezing.
Not every cpu is capable of stable overclocking past a certain threshold. You have probably hit the max speed your cpu can maintain.
I agree with you but then why there are other people with the same phone as me that can overclock them at 1.4 ghz?
With CM7 or miui and either bilboa or zacharius kernel you can overclock to 1300 but I haven't found a kernel that allows 1400 either, I think those that are doing it are hacking the CPU settings themselves.
My phone gets really hot at 1300 running apps like dungeon defender so 1400 might just be a bit too much

I am using Darky's 9.3 ROM but my problem is that i can't even touch 1300 mhz because my phone freezes.
Maybe a dumb question, but, do you overvolt as well as overclock? Maybe the cpu isnt getting enough juice?

+1... not sure if there is much benefit at all to undervolting.. it just seems to make it immediately less stable...
can someone shed some light?
I've seen someone test this on another forum somewhere, and the difference the undervolting makes to the battery length is negligible..

The principles of ovetclocking a PC also aplly to phones. Undervolting reduces the power available to the CPU. Undervolt a little and you'll save a little power. Undervolt.too much and the CPU won't get enough power to do basic functions hence freezing.
Every CPU has a limit to which you can over clock. You can overvolt to a point but then then the CPU reaches its limit.
From what I understand (read in another post) the hummingbird processors are not suited to overclocking. Where the arm such as that in the Motorola milestone clock really well. (You can oc a 600mhz milestone to 1ghz before you start seeing instability)

I understand the intention of undervolting as i am pretty good with PCs. Got my good old i7 overclocked constantly. But undervolting on the SGS has yet to show me any definitive advantages.

I've undervolted my device and right now I have
100mhz - 825 mah
200mhz - 825 mah
500mhz - 800 mah
for some reason the 500mhz setting is stable and if I undervolt 100mhz/200mhz even more, I crash.
If I set my minimum processor power to 500mhz would I consume less batter than if I were to use 100mhz/200mhz?
Your phone spends most of its time in the lowest and highest cpu frequencies and just a small amount of time at the intermediate levels. Your undervolt for 500mhz probably isn't stable but it doesn't crash because it's only at that frequency for a very short amount of time. If you set the minimum to 500mhz at that voltage it will probably start playing up.

I don't meen the crashes and freeze ups, but rather more like if there's any risk
to really damage your phone from it?

It's been my minimum even before posting this thread. I just started to wonder.
I've been on it for 10 hours now. I have 45% battery life left. Probably due to my 1700mhz being @ 1350mah right now.
I can assure you, it's VERY stable. It's so SMOOTH. Smoother than just having rocketrom and all that stuff. NO LAGS, NO SHUTDOWNS. ALL STABLE.
I can see better battery life, and CPU Spy says it used up 47% 1700mhz and 40% 500mhz. I think it's giving me better battery life.
It's evenly splitted up probably because I was using lulzactive governor.
but then again I didn't log my previous battery life without undervolting.
Some more insight would be nice.

There are alot of risks. Minor chance that you will cause hardware damage to your phone but I'm saying VERY minor. Just don't be stupid with voltages, like just suddenly overdropping the voltages. Your processor might die.
It's scary as hell, it crashes alot while testing and all that ****.
Feels good when you get it stable though.
TL;DR
Very slight chance to damage your hardware; only if you're very daring.
It should increase your battery life by atleast 20% if you reach the peak of your processors limit.
Bump, are there no other insights on this? Am I like, the only one who undervolted his/her note?

I want to run 1700mhz as permanent and also wanted to undervolt but i wasnt sure how much by and what the risks are. Reason being is my phone gets hot with heavy usage running at 1400mhz so didnt want to go to 1700. I'll watch this thread with interest

I'm running 500-1700mhz.
Indeed it does get hot at 1700mhz, when I'm playing games but I've only at most played for 4 hours straight.
For what reason would you want to run 1700mhz-1700mhz?

No sorry i meant running it at 1700 max, leaving it stock for the min. I just wanted to know how much i can safely undervolt 1700 by.
I actually have a question. I undervolted my note with SetCPU and I read that Tegrak Overclock Ultimate should be used as well together with SetCPU.
What does Tegrak Overclock do? GPU settings?
Would like to learn that part if anyone has any info.

I undervolted mine by about 100mah. I think I can tone it down by about 25mah more but I'm having a hard time getting it to stabilize.
1350 for my device is completely safe though.
Though, all processors are different. Yours could be better than mine and can withstand more UV-ing.

It's basically the same with SetCPU aside from its voltages.
I do not know if it should be used with SetCPU with the note because from what I've researched. It's only a common practice with SGSII.
Tried setting 100 and 200 mhz to 825. Crashed my phone twice in one day using it, gonna revert back to 875

If u are playin heavy games that make use of cf3d, u definitely need to oc 710mhz nd above..for best performance connect ur charger, nd play.
Select performance gov..
Make sure to remove the back cover coz huge amnt of heat might be generated once u start playin heavy games also as the charger is connected...this will help cool ur phone a bit more..
I played with GTA III ripped version on stock rom without overclocking the cpu.
I could play very well, but the battery get drained fast and it was very hot. Remove the back cover and plug your charger as freakyfriday said.
I think 710 Mhz is good for playing.

i just want to know too..how about the minimum freq?and maybe the I/O scheduler you choose?

there are three well known methods for improving gaming performance, actually i have tested these
1.install cyanogenmod7 latest from here
2.oc from cm settings to 787mhz and set the governor to performance.
3.now thee famous graphics emulator app can be used(i'm not mentioning its name due to forum rules, but can find that app from the site to which i have given the link)
these settings would improve your gaming performance upto 3 times.dont forget to follow allthese for best results.
it will work , dont forget to click thanks , i have spent some valuable time on this.

i don't recommend u overclocking its it 100% damage ur phone.... over cloak is just for pcs have a cooling system and....

Its safe to do it buddy as so many people are overclocking...although a considerable life is reduced if OC regularly for long periods of time..
just set it to 710 if you are using squadzone kernel is the best with no freez no crach

What kind of success/failure are people having with overclocking and undervolting?
I'm doing this through ROM Toolbox Pro. Is there a better way? I'm a n00b with some of this stuff.
I have the phone overclocked to 1200mhz and all cpu levels are undervolted by 100mV.
Im doing so to get more performance, and better battery life. Just wondering what settings everyone else is using.
Also I'm using CM 10.1, with the BlueMint Theme.

Every phone has different limits. It's just like PC overclocking, no two CPU/MB/RAM combos are exactly the same. In general most of Captivates will handle 1200 step OC with default voltages. Not too many will handle 120% live OC though. It doesn't matter what tool you use to OC. All tools try to play with the same kernel settings. In my experience UV saves very little battery but increases significantly the chances to get stability issues. This is why I never play with UV. My particular phone can do 1400 step OC or 1200 live OC with 1350mV. I run it on 1200 step OC @ default. Also, keep in mind that different ROMs/kernels give different OC results.
RE: undervolt
I agree with Val D that undervolting will not show any significant benefits. Overvolting has helped me with stability while overclocking. I use the free Voltage Control app for voltages, or the free NStools app. Rom Toolbox is a great app too- I use it for many other things- stick with what works for you. Currently I am running at 1200Mhz step, at 120% Live OverClock to get CPU up to 1440Mhz, and ARM voltage of 1350mV at that 1200Mhz step. Rock solid. Battery life suffers a bit, but I run this way for gaming. Day-to-day regular usage I just set to 1400Mhz step and no Live OC, default voltages. I have run fine in the past at 1500Mhz, no Live OC. Overclocking the CPU tends to make my phone a bit snappier and more responsive. A big battery drain that affects my phone is an app such as Gmail running in the background, or leaving wifi enabled when not in use. Setting the phone to Airplane mode has been a big battery helper too (I do not make any voice calls on this phone anymore). Governor and scheduler setting can also have a big effect on battery life. Thanks guys. I know each one over clocks differently. Just looking for some rough outlines. Thanks for the links. I'll be reading up on those. I have extensive computer over clocking experience, but on e phone its a whole new ball game. Basically trying to make this phone last longer.

I really didn't notice much of a difference in speed or responsiveness using CM 10.1.
