I'm running short of storage space on my Diamond, and while browsing around in File Explorer I noticed that there are copies of all the HTC demo media (album samples, mp3 files) in the Windows folder - there's easily 2-3mb worth and I could do with deleting them. However it won't let me, is there a way to get rid of them?
Kind regards
Dave
maybe this help
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38008&highlight=touch+diamond+guide
Thanks, that was helpful - but although they talk about deleting files from the Windows folder in the thread, it doesn't exactly detail how :-(
Kind regards
Dave
most files in the win dir are not in storage but in the rom itself
and can only be deleted by cooking ones own rom
also rom space not used is not merged with storage
so i would not really help you
if you want more space
You can do it by replacing them with some 0 KB files that have the exact same file names and extensions. I just posted this thread for 46 useless files in the Windows directory that will free up more than 10 MB. If there are any other files that you want to delete, just create a new text file, rename it to the file that you want to delete, then copy it to the Windows directory to overwrite the original file. Always backup the original ones in your computer just in case you want to restore them.
I was also thinking about this, but didnt test it yet . Very helpful.

That's good to know, thanks.
If, as I understand from reading earlier posts, the files are indeed in the ROM and they don't actually take up storage space then I might as well leave them where they are.
Thanks!

I want to test some stuff before I want to cook a new Rom (that will be released to the community).
I'm gonna add some files to the Rom, but I also want to delete some files from the Rom. I already have some ideas of the files I am going to delete, but I want to delete as much as possible from the Rom that is not needed.
So I want to create a list here with files that can permenantly be deleted from a Rom (in my opinion).
For starters:
- Pictures in \My Documents\My Pictures
- Music in \My Documents\My Music
- Video in \My Documents\ My Videos
- Wifi_Init.lnk
- Init_Tray.lnk
- IA_Zip.exe
- Zip.lnk
- Help_Zip.lnk
- Zip_(ht).html
- Flower.jpg
- Waterfall.jpg
- Downloadagent.exe
- dlagent.exe
- Download Agent.lnk
- HTCABOUTLOGO.bmp
Who will make this list complete....

What for do you want to delete link files? Maybe there not needed but they are only few bytes...

The Wifi_Init.lnk and Init_Tray.lnk are the 2 links I delete first after a hard-reset, on my Roms not needed (I dont need a taskbar with a battery meter or other shortcuts in it) and saves a little bit of memory.
The links for downloadAgent and Zip are removed because I want to remove the complete programs (Dont need DL-agent at all and rather use Pocket RAR instead of the WM5 Zip functionality).
I am also playing with the idea of moving Pocket Word, Excel and PowerPoint to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MS Office, so you will get an extra folder in Programs with these 3 programs in it (just like the Games folder in Start Menu).

Yea....your right with that

yes u can delete those files , but word exel and others have reg keys in .rgu/dsm files and need to be edited.no an easy task,if not done properly it may create problems in future.
removing the files will not increase storage in any way, unless u are mking space to other files.if u just want to remove those links simply remove the entrys in the initflashes.dat file.
you can remove all the clearvue pdf fonts if u dont want this app in the rom
u can also remove IntelliPad.dlls language files that u dont need.

This was important for me, clearing out files does not increase the storage.
But can you tell me HOW to increase storage on Main Memory?
So for now I am just gonna change some things (links/themes and things like that) and don't delete things (except for the standard stuff in My Pictures, My Videos and My Music).

has anyone been able to expand on this list for WM6?
How
I am new t this but Love it I want to build in a kitchen But dont know how to cook....
thanks in advance
thanks CK
Hello,
I've read that this file stores contacts, notes, calendar, and the like. In earlier OS versions, it used to be rather small. in the WM6 Tilt, its 16MB. The properties show it as READ ONLY and in ROM. How can it store and info if it is READ only? It would be great to get this thing reduced in a new cooked ROM. Any comments or suggestions on making the file size smaller? Thanks, MWP.

mxip_initdb.vol questions
I've been doing some reading about this file. This file is really large and I want to do something to make sure I have no problems with this file. I removed this file from my OEM_Lang_0409 folder and I'm not sure if I'm having any problems. I seem to be able to connect to activesync okay. Although, it seems like it takes me couple unplug and plug with the USB to connect. Can I be okay with erasing this file?
Return of 16Mb space!
Well,i think now you can forget about this file!
First i cheked it with sktool,it sad than this db is unused
Then i copied it to my card and created an emty txt file with name "mxip_initdb.vol" and readonly attribs and put it in root directory. Reboot- everything works fine And my 16mb returns to me!
P.S.: my device is diamond with 1.93 rom
P.P.S.:My english is not great, but i hope it helps anybody
Interesting.. I suspect there's some very good reason for this file, as many cooks remove everything possible from their ROMs, and my ROMeOS 4.6 has this file.

i've the same problem with ROM coocked (Dib Diamond 1.9 - based on 1.93)
I've tried with your trick, but after each soft reset "mxip_initdb.vol" returns to 16Mb!
I've tried also to delete it, but again, after each soft reset "mxip_initdb.vol" reappears...
I hate this file.
Does anyone know how to delete system files out of the \windows folder? there is a bunch of junk in there and I'd like to get rid of a lot of it. I have tried using a program called total commander that you can change the file properties and it just reverts right bak... any help would be great.

Unless these were installed manually then you can't get rid of them as they are in the ROM (Read-Only Memory). The only way you can remove them is to re-flash without the files in the ROM image. Are you sure you don't need them?
rom != storage
the system files in \windows are in the os rom part which is never
something you can overwrite unless you are building a rom
freeing up space in the rom don't add space to storage
it just mean you have a device which don't use all the space
it could in the read only memory
this does not give you more space or speed up your device
unless the program is auto run and take up temp storage
and application memory

Go to Windows, tap menu, tap show all files, scroll until you find the file/s you want to delete. This is very time consuming, but if you have patience and perseverence give it a try.
Hi,
I'm just testing my cooking skills on sparkienl's kitchen.
Problem is I've noticed that every package I put inside my ROM, even if I redirect it to the program files, puts it files on both program files and windows folder.
now, normally this wouldn't bother me much - but the folder has well over 5000 files (had about double that number before), since I presume it has an impact on performance I'de like to know if I can safely delete the files on the window folder (and how) or not,
thanks in advance and sorry if the question was asked before - I did lots of searching and couldn't find anything helpful

Why not ask this query within kitchen thread?
I wouldnt go about just deleting files from the windows directory. That said, i think the program extendir can be used to move files out of the windows directory whilst still leaving them functional. I think it must be cooked into ROM or something (i never looked into it) or if the project is still on.
Fallen Spartan - because it happend on both Sparkienl's and Juggler's kitchens I've tried, so I presumed its more of a common ROM cooking question then a kitchen specific one - your call on whether to keep the thread open,
Ask - thanks, looks like a great addition to te ROM, but as far as I've read its only for files added after the ROM have been flashed, meaning I will need to create a bare ROM, its not so far from what I want - but there are still those pesky thousends of files
since im working this days pretty far from my home i arrive late to my home perhaps in my work i have my usb wire so i can use the massive storage.
the thing its the files for linux like .nomedia and so on, so i cant copy to windows and then copy again to the new SD since i dont have time to install linux at home (and maybe i dont have space lol ) so anyway to do in windows? because i buy a 8 gb SD and i need transfer all my files :s thanks =D
Why do you need the .nomedia files? Can't you just show hidden files in windows and copy them all?
You don't even need to install linux, just grab a live cd and your good to go.

live cd indeed i have a distro iguess if not i need download... and i said .nomedia as example there is a lot of "system" files
you know, I'm sorry for the dumb question.
I've just selected all, copy, and pasted onto a new card.
Does this not copy everything?
sorry, nevermind, I read that wrong

could be, perhaps windows take some files and "configure" or add a extension for this files and do not a copy. for example try make a .nomedia file in windows and you have an error, so when you copy windows could not copy or rename or add a extension .
but maybe in some cases do a exact copy, not happen to me at least on w7 isnt copy all files ._.
