Ok so here's the story:
Got my HTC Diamond (unlocked version) back in June 2008 for about $700 USD.
Few months later the backlight stops working and it gives me the microp version mismatch error.
I send it in to HTC for repairs, a month later I get it back, working again.
Now I've had the phone back for about a month, and today I turn on the phone and guess what: NO BACKLIGHT! When it finally does boot up (without the backlight) it gives me the MicroP version mismatch error AGAIN.
What a piece of junk. In less than one year this phone has died twice on me. I still have old sony and nokia phones from 6 or 7 years ago that work 100%, yet my HTC Diamond has died twice in less than a year?
I'll never buy another HTC phone. </rant>
That sucks that you of all people ended up getting the 1/100000 lemons out of the factory. I've gone through a few HTC's and have NEVER had a problem with them, as I'm sure not many have.
I'd give it another chance if it was me, god knows I love WinMo.
yeah...well i just called HTC repairs again. they said they will pay to have it shipped back to them for repairs, again.
hopefully it doesn't take too long...
i still think it's funny that the crappy free phones i have from years ago still work great, but this $700 phone keeps breaking on me! grrrrrr
It's because those 'cheap crappy phones' have 1-10 components inside, whereas the Diamond has 10x that (g-sensor,gps,wifi,etc) so there's so much more possibility of something breaking.
I think you've just been very unlucky, I've owned tones of phones and not one of them has ever failed on me.
I would suggest that if your Diamond fails again (touch wood it doesn't ) demand a new one as replacement, as it's probably beyond repair.
Bad luck for you.
I ve had HTC devices for about 4 years and never ever had a problem. I even dropped my HTC Wizard twice and stepped on It. And it still works !!!!
So Go and buy a Iphone
sony and nokia phones ... how many? why changing to htc if your phoneS works 100%? work both phoneS together 100% (sony 30% and nokia 70%).
i was the master of making a phone unflashable and unusable.
1. prophet: soundproblem ... after looking inside and try to repair = death
2. artemis: during flashing pull usb-cable = never starts again
2.1 artemis: after more than 100 try-flashing for reanimation the resetbutton gone to god
3. eten x800: 2 days old in germany, no roms, try something like x500 udlr = unflashable since today but function o.k.
4. diamond: 1 day - 1 hour - first think was flashing. it flyes with me to Turkey, drinks water, fly to wall (2 times), flashing and cooking, i think i would marry it.
today its a htc what you never buy, tomorrow its a palm and the day after its an other phone. do what you want and have fun with your new never-want-buy-xyz-phone ....

I agree with this comment! After two attemps at resolving the same issue, any manufacturer should replace the handset completely.
Best of Luck

not once has one broke down on me....
i have dropped a few....but thats me....not the phone

im interested in that too, my phone does the exact same, and a friends.
is there any "home solution"
My Diamond broke twice during the first 2 months (overheated and wi-fi became dysfunctional). A friend's Diamond overheated so much whilst navigating that it broke too.
I've had mine for almost a year now but my next one will definitely be an IPhone. My Diamond has been immature and unstable from the beginning, requiring third-party software and registry patches for basic functionality like setting touchscreen sensitivity and the integration of the address book into the phone user interface is just moronic. Scrolling is plain awkward in TF3D, nothing like the smooth control you have on the Iphone.
My first HTC was a Qtec S200 and it was better in every respect except that it lacked GPS. More robust, better battery life, better GSM sensitivity, better wifi range, better touchscreen sensitivity. Solid as a brick.

This handset is less than a year old, why not just send it back for software upgrade?? As you are from the UK also, not many people do know this but all mobile phones now have a 24 month warranty (they dont tell you this to stop you from taking your phone back but this is EU law)
just found out this is a world wide problem is so bad that some operators who sold the phone are asking for there return!!

touch wood i dont think this has ever happeded to SE before but it has happened to nokia a couple of times!
glad we can get around theses problems!!
So about 45 days ago I purchased a new Tilt off ebay. Big mistake but the people at Best Buy had me convinced that they stopped making them. Yesterday out of no where my keyboard went dead and my phone started acting up. Currently I can't leave my phone on without it starting the note program and recording sound clips until the memory is full.
At this point I was just wondering what my options are. Will AT&T exchange my phone for a refurbished one? Is there anyway I could sent the phone to HTC to get it repaired. Are there any reliable companies that I could send the phone to? I have heard stories about people just bringing the phone into a AT&T store and getting it swapped out. Am I out $400?
If you got it off ebay, att doesnt want anything to do with it. You can try for HTC support, but i have no idea how HTC is with that kind of stuff.
Do a hard reset, and see if that helps any.
I wonder if it's just a faulty keyboard and it's causing shortcuts to open the notes software.
What other things are happening?
Could be a cable loose inside or the keyboard circuit board could have slipped out of place. This happened on mine.
HTC wont touch an HTC device under warranty without a receipt (from original purchase) Branded devices they wont touch without them coming from the network.
Paid repairs are different, they'll carry out the repairs for you, and invoice you for the repairs. They also charge for a quotation for repairs if you dont get it repaired (£20 in the UK I think, no idea outside of the UK)
If the phone keeps recording notes, it could be something as simple as a button being stuck. my solution with old devices was to mash the buttons as much as possible, and it generally unstuck them.
If your device is 45 days old (to you) then to be fair, its not likely to be an issue that the seller knew about, as its something thats occured since then. Issues can occur at any stage in a devices life, its just unfortunate that yours has chosen now to go wrong.
If you're not looking to pay to get the device fixed, it may be something as simple as opening the case up, and cleaning around the keyboard/extra buttons and re-assembling it, but if you're unsure on how to do this, I'd recommend not trying. When I opened my old 9100 to try and clean it up, something went sproing, and I lost a spring... I could never use the bottom row on the keyboard after that.
I've had good experiences with HTC.

This isn't my experience.
I've had a couple of dealings with HTC UK and have been very happy:
1) Ebay-sourced Tornado failed screen - I phoned HTC and from the IMEI number they got the manufacturing date, worked out it was under a year old, and fixed it for free
2) ebay-sourced Artemis - I dropped it, bent the casing. I phoned HTC and they fixed it as a paid repair for 65UKP. This included a complete recase. When I noticed some of the buttons were a bit sticky afterwards, they did a second repair replacing the controls for free, despite it almost certainly being a problem caused by my initial dropping.
3) ebay-sourced Qtek 8500. Had a problem with the LCD failing when the clamshell was flexed. Again, phoned HTC UK and replaced under warranty.
They've been prompt, have native helpdesks, cheap and generally couldn't have been more helpful - definitely worth approaching them. This contrasts with, say, Nokia and is a major part of why I like HTC products.

The first thing u should do is figure out if it is hardware or software related. Just do a hardreset and see if that helps. If not, then its most likely hardware related.
Check in Settings - Buttons what button is assigned to the recorder (usually the one on the left side), remove that assignment.
The button must be stuck or the sensor below it faulty, so it senses that button always pressed.

Dont get me wrong, I wasnt slating HTC for their support, I'm with you on that one. I've just seen jobs that have been bounced back from them (rightfully so) and was just giving the worst case scenario, that being that HTC dont actually have to fix it.
the agent or att will not help you, you got it from eBay and even if they help it will be for extra $$ so you may well just override that idea
first thing we must be sure if its hardware failure or software failure
if its software then you need to read lots but eventually you will have to get a new ROM and start from scratch eliminate all 3rd party ( so i advice using stocked ROM)
look at this it might help http://rapidshare.com/files/103168855/HTC_Kaiser_Service_Manual_jas_pik.pdf
this is the repair manual for kaiser
Square Trade
After this happened to me the first time I got some bunk electronics from ebay, I started using squaretrade.com. They will give you a warranty at about 50% of the cost of a Manufacturer/Dealer warranty and have a five day fix/replacement guarantee.
I would like to thank everyone for their reply I can see this is a dedicated community.

Last night I reverted back to my factory rom but this did not fix the problem. Some odd things that I noticed that has me completely baffled is that only the directional keys (up, down, right, left) work on the keyboard but nothing else works. I tried doing a hard reset but that didn't wont since the 2 soft keys are not responding.

That manual seems very complete if I can't get HTC to fix it I will attempt to fix it myself. Does anyone know if I can purchase replacement part?
There's some hope for you. I bought my Tilt off of Ebay. AT&T warranted it from the day that it hit their network with my SIM card. So although it was originally purchased from AT&T (by the ebayer seller) on Oct 17th 2007, my warranty started December 6th 2007. No receipt required. They swapped it no problem. The TILT has a 365 day warranty via AT&T.
Just make sure you deal with a service center and not the individual stores. Go to attwireless.com and search for "TILT Warranty" .. look for the service center information.
Mine was swapped with no hassle in about 5minutes (I had a rom issue). One note if you go this route, check the replacement! My replacement has key-sticking issues (the right key on the keyboard gets stuck down, etc). The speaker (for phonecalls, not external) also is a little more muted than my old one (I sometimes have trouble hearing people). I may rewarranty it.
*edit*
Here: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&solutionId=KB64687
The service centers are contractors (I could tell by their shirts, saying "Company Name: Authorized AT&T Tech"), so I really don't think they care, as long as they can warranty it they will because it is more money for them. Just my thought.
As the above poster said, AT&T WILL do warranty exchanges on tilts bought through ebay or otherwise. I bought one off of craigslist and had it exchanged when a key on the keyboard stopped working. No problem. It is warrantied for 1 year after it is first used on their system.
The people stating otherwise are flat out wrong.
Thanks for the advice guys I was able to take the phone to a AT&T service center and swap the phone for a new one.

It was a nice surprise for me last week, as I thought I was out $400 for a new one or stuck to using a temporary phone until the Touch Pro came.

I need some help please, I have cracked the digitizer on my diamond (O2 ignito), it is still working for now but I'm not sure what to do next.
I could replace it with a new lcd+digitizer ready assembled in a couple of hours for about £38, I have replaced many phone screens before, just never a touch screen, it can't be that hard.
I have insurance for the phone, I could claim on this but this presents a number of other problems. O2 don't list the Ignito any more, if they send me a replacement handset (if they don't just fix it and send it back) what would they send me, the XDA guide (Iolite?) or Zest? neither of these look that as good as my diamond. Also I'd be without a phone for however long this takes. Also I'd probably have to put the phone back to stock (stock ROM and radio and remove hard-SPL) The cost is slightly less about £25 for the excess.
I've got just over 4 months left before an upgrade as well.
What do you think is the best option?
Thanks
i had same problem and was thinking of fixing myself for the cost of a new digitizer on ebay which is £10. For repairs o2 are always out of stock of the ignito it seems i was waiting 3-4weeks for replacement, in end i had to settle with a zest as i needed a phone. i would not recommend the zest at all as mine stopped working after a week and there is not much if not any support for it on here, they would not let me have a xda guide so you would be lucky if you did.
if you claimed off your insurance then they should have new stock of ignito's think a claim cost is £25
after sending my zest back after the week i managed to get my ignito back gd times.
anyway if your lucky they should fix and send your phone back after a few days depending on stock. and the postal strikes hope that helped
Thanks for that.
I think I will claim on the insurance as it sounds like quite a hassle changing the screen myself
It seems they don't carry stock of the diamond any more. They have offered me a xda guide (Iolite/touch cruise2) or some blackberry's (definate no for me).
Has anybody any experience of what the Iolite is like compared to the diamond?
The thing that sticks out the most is the lower resolution QVGA screen.
Thanks
I'm getting a touch pro now, so goodye to the diamond forum, hello raphael forum.
Glad to see Gen Y ROM for raphael

i don't know waht to say
but i love my X1 more than this N900
at last X1 is Windows Mobile and i love this OS more than any other.
on my X1 verithing is ok and i love it
I've sent my X1 into sony once, but still I'm really happy about it, its working well and I love that I've gotten everything how I like it.
N900 is a good phone though, but seems to tout itself as something really powerful in the Nokia lineup (which compared to other nokias is true), when WM and Android is just as capable. Its great for messing around with though.

Nope, you're not the only one sending it back for the second time. Mine's back with SE at the moment because the case has cracked again! Different place this time.
Haven't had any other probs with it though, and am still v. happy with it now I've got it running how I like it (taken about 9 months, mind you!)
Weird,
I got mine since April 2009 & dropped it already 2-3 times from minimum 1 meter high on the floor.
And it doesn't have even a crack or a malfunction :O
Everthing works perfectly on my device ^^
Seems some people have bad luck :S
got mine more then a year ago and haven't had any problems with anything
well after I fell in a lake 2 times the same night the keyboard have some issues where some keys require a harder pressure and some only light pressure or I get 2 letters
but I can't really fault sonyE / htc for that problem

I don't know... a combination of an accelerometer and a jet pack on the X1 could have kept you from falling in the lake
(I also sent mine in twice: screen/LED then keyboard)
Just got mine back 2nd time
First time I sent it to repair it was for the keyboard issue.
Now the keyboard is ok but after a month or so it started dropping calls, bad 3G reception etc.
So sent it back again and received it back last saturday.
it seems fixed now but I have to try it out for a few days.
So you're not alone in your X1 troubles...
"I don't know... a combination of an accelerometer and a jet pack on the X1 could have kept you from falling in the lake"
funny you should mention it because when I tried to turn it on after the first dip
all life sign it gave was to turn on the led for the cam maybe it was trying to save me from the second drop if only I had left it on

You are not the only one. That is for sure! Here's the situation by me: I had cracks in my X1 (never dropped, always in leather case), and after that problems with the keyboard. It went to service, 2 months ago - problems with keyboard and with front panel keys. I've opened and fixed the problem with the front panel keys. And very soon I'll open it again and clean the keyboard. That is 3 times opening the phone. I hope it won't break of so much openings, but it is the worst phone (panel quality wise) I've ever had.
And the guy from the service said - you can try to sell it and by the new X2 - yeah !!! I'll never buy SE again, not in the next couple of years at least. And X2 - it is just as slow as X1. I've spent 550 euro for something that causes me so much troubles.
my xperia came they appears did not do nothing
they said I did software tampering wtf is that ? is this custom rom or they realized the stock spl?
but what is funny my keyboard is working properly now
is this stupid or what LMAO! ?
Its served me well for the past year but now i fear it has gone kaput..
2 days ago i noticed my homescreen had "no service" listed.
strange as i normally receive a 3g signal fine in my area with no loss..
So i figured take the sim out,
give it a clean and pop it back in
That came the same thing,
"no service"
So i took that sim out and tried my others [o2/tmobile and lebara]
Same thing, wouldn't get a signal..
==
So afraid to say this thing may end up on ebay or in the free ads as a faulty/repair handset as im lost with what to do.. >__<
Any advice guys?
[EDIT]
Yes the phone was unlocked,
must've been through atleast 14 different roms over time but that shouldnt effect this surely.. o__O
Have you tried a hard reset or reflash?
If your phone still dead..when there's a dead body...commonly there's always an autopsy . It can be hardware (antena), maybe something is loose in there.
Try hard-reset if not working flash stock and see if disabling 3G helps... Check no problems carrier side.
As Mr Clown said genrally a way to fix you just have to try every scenario and if not then might be hardware @ which point you can decide if worth the time/outlay?
Thanks guys for the info,
@MrClown I have tried a had reset to only end up in the same situation,
I will attempt a stock rom flash tonight to see if that helps
@Stylez Again i will try a stock flash and see if it helps,
Found a good one on the wiki so that should help
My guess is hardware related as the phone had been dropped a few times in the house albeit over many months not repeatedly,
I'll report back later guys
so thanks for the advice
hey dude! all is not lost! this is a common problem with the kaiser due to the sliding mechanism, i.e. "moving parts". over time, the wear and tear often causes the "main flex cable" to become loose/faulty. i had the same problem at the beginning of may 2010...had it fixed in 1 week and it worked fine. then i got an HD2 in june 2010 but the kaiser still works just fine!
i had made up my mind that the kaiser needed to be replaced the day it went bad. BUT i did not give up hope on it and decided to have it repaired because it is worth more in the second hand market with working phone functionality. did a simple cost-benefit analysis and figured i'd have it repaired AND get an HD2.
wouldn't you know it, i ended up GIVING the kaiser to my brother...had i sold it to a potential buyer, i'm certain it would be worth more if the phone parts work.
...and just to summarize! HD2 is GREAT! but i really miss the hardware keyboard of the kaiser and the super duper redundancy the kaiser had in terms of buttons...D-PAD+jog wheel+arrow keys on hardware keyboard, THREE OK buttons...count them! TWO start menu buttons. oh and the HD2 has a soft reset button in a REEAAAAAALLLLLLYYYYY difficult to access area behind the battery cover, unlike the kaiser's super friendly poke-the-stylus-in-the-hole approach. BUT i highly recommend the HD2 if you still fancy windows mobile...fast, HHUUUUUUGGGEEEE screen, and it seems android just might happen soon on the HD2.

Well if you'll care to enlighten me on where i could get this repair done id be most glad,
Wont be handing it to the people in my local market to fiddle with as i dont trust them at all
As in regards to the previous two guys a stock rom didnt help at all it still refuses to get a signal,
so its definatly something to do with this "flex cable"
But in regards to the HD i wont be getting one,
Most likely i'll be getting another xda exec [htc universal] for my social needs,
I have a tendancy of using dated hardware and pushing their limits
sure dude! i'm just going to post links here of THREE other threads about this issue (so you can verify with some more testing if the flex cable is really the actual issue), in which i have contributed my experience. you can read my posts there as well as all the other very helpful posts of other members.

summary: first try some of the debugging techniques mentioned in the above threads and look for signs that the flex cable is indeed faulty. if so, you have 2 options:
1. get a do-it-yourself kit (available on many websites and also on ebay) and errrr do it yourself!
2. have someone reliable and experienced with such repairs carry out the repair.
i had to go for option 2. and i had to rely on the parts that the service repair guy had to offer (he cannibalized the flex cable from a tilt so the front camera of my tytn2 is no longer detected!).
i totally understand the need to milk out every last drop from these expensive devices. i truly respect the tytn2 even though it is an old device. that little bugger still has so much potential. hope this helps!
Ahhh much thanks for the information man,
You have no idea how appreciative i am
Its definatly a hardware issue so its gonna have to be a replacement fixup for myself,
Looking into this listing on ebay:

Essentially from hong kong as usual but that looks like it would do the job,
The only problem now is that i have ZERO experience with mobile based mainboards and hardware changing,
Give me a pc or mac anyday and ill be done in seconds but im afraid im blank for mobile operations,
Would any UK members be able to give advice as to somewhere i could get this fitted?
Only option i can think of is at the carphone warehouse..
as in my first post i dont really wish to give this to the market people for a botched job
And much thanks to ASCIIker for all the helpful information,
cos id really dread getting rid of my TyTN II >_<
