...but what the hell gives? Does swype actually have plans for the public at large to use this? It has always worked perfectly well for me, ive never had a single issue with it so i dont get the "beta" tag.
I dont remember where i downloaded it, ive certainly never registered at swype, beta has been closed every time ive looked anyway. But ive had swype in my file manager for what feels like forever, i just installed it and when i opened it to use it it said the "trial has expired". . And whats the deal with letting a few people download it every once in a while?
Personally I dont even think its better than the stock keyboard which is pretty bad itself, maybe thats just because i use landscape alot and swype isnt so great in landscape, or perhaps i just got used to typing on the stock kb. But this super-exclusive "beta" jazz has gone on long enough hasnt it? I mean how much better can it really get?
Actually,I think swype still has a fair way to go.
But I agree, it is good enough for release, and even tho I'm a beta tester. I'm over the beta as well, should be on market
You should try ultra keyboard, its available in Market, and with tracing enabled its just like swype.

Personally I don't like Swype because the "tracing" action is difficult to do unless you're sitting still holding the phone in one hand and "typing" with the other. Which excludes a whole bunch of activities with my phone.. Walking between meetings, sitting in the car at a stop light (phone in car mount), etc..
But I have yet to find the 'perfect' keyboard.. HTC IME is about the closest for me and I use it most of the time, but for some things I really like SwiftKey, Touchpal I use sometimes but it gets laggy... Maybe I should create a post and combine keyboard pro/cons, although it'd be very personal...
I wouldn't expect Swype to ever be in the market. They've stated publicly they are interested in working with OEMs to license and deliver Swype, not the end user.
The OEM bit makes some sense since it is already coming pre-installed on some phones like the Samsung "Vibrant" (Galaxy S) phone from T-mobile and others.
They have said that swype will be an OEM value added product. Like the beta when they get a final out the apk will be readily available for download so I'm not concerned. If they wont take my money I will feel no guilt over not paying for it.

Hi everyone,
We would like to provide an update regarding the unauthorized distribution of our Swype software for the Android platform. We realize that many sites are now distributing this software and several are providing installation instructions.
We are glad that you like Swype, but we did not release or leak it for distribution and do not currently support any downloadable versions.
There are now two devices that ship with the Swype keyboard pre-installed: the Verizon Samsung Omnia II on Windows Mobile and, more recently, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. We’re very excited about these releases, and there will be a number of new device launches in the near future. Because our partners are highly sensitive about their product releases, we really cannot say anything further. But a lot of work goes into making sure that Swype integrates perfectly with each device we release and by comparison, any leaked or hacked version of our software will work improperly or not at all.
One might ask why we don't just release it ourselves and save everyone the hassle? The reason is that we have spent seven years building Swype and our business model at present is OEM licensing. We do plan to get to direct-to-consumer distribution, but it is a different sort of business with unique challenges and thus it is hard to say when.
Stay tuned (and provide feedback) on our forum at swype.com

The Swype Team

Personally I think Swype is an annoying PoS to use, and this is after months of use (I'm in the official beta). The pop-up screen that occurs every time you tap a letter is so annoying it's downright idiotic. Not having a microphone key is also extremely frustrating, as is not having any access whatsoever to the custom dictionary it uses. Great idea but some of their implementation is absolutely horrible.
I've used all three of the above keyboards with tracing capabilities and in my opinion, they are all are better and much more pleasing to use than Swype.
I've switched to Ultra Keyboard and purchased it yesterday. Hope that helps.
Yeah I don't use swype because its no good in landscape, its really not that great in portrait but I haven't found a good keyboard and I've tried them all. I just wish I had the option. I know its blasphemy but I still think the iPhones method of invisibly resizing the keys is far and away the best but it must he trademarked since it hasn't been mimicked. I know about thick keys or whatever its called but its awful, just terrible. I'd have no interest in swype if we could get one like the iPhone. Of course, if I had a 4" screen I might be plenty happy with stock. Android said they know their keyboard blows, but if the iPhone method is truly trademarked android is going to have to get pretty creative. But if its not trademarked I wish they'd just copy it already. There's no shame in using what works, its more shameful to not, upon principle, use what works. While we're copying the iPhone lets make the maps zoom in and out using a single image instead of pinching to where I want it,then it jumping further in and then loading a whole new image at yet another level, if you've zoomed on an iPhone you understand how defective android maps is (that's not to say the content sucks, google maps is the best application there is, obviously). Sorry about that last part, when I rant to my wife she just turns the TV up really loud.
It does seem a bit rich to get it Beta tested publically but then only have it as a OEM release.
Google bought out blindtype, if they implement that as the stock keyboard. The iPhone comparison will be long forgotten, it will be strides above

I guess I didnt "dislike" them I just didnt find them to be significantly better than stock or htcime. Actually Ultra Keyboard was a bit overwhelming for me. I do like SlideIt, I have SlideIt, htc and stock installed currently, but like i said, in my opinion neither is unequivocally better than the other so i usually just end up on stock. I think this screen is just big enough for stock to be comfortable, not awesome, but adequate. I definitely find myself sending texts in immediate succession to correct/clarify the original, but im used to it so thats not really a complaint. But i have gotten pretty used to typing on stock, and voice text is phenomenal so i use that alot. I love that Google is constantly obtaining new startups, I forgot about the blindkey acquisition thats pretty exciting. Just knowing that Android is aware of the deficiency and has plans to address it gives me reason to be patient, and pumped!
Its getting real close to gingerbread time, I cant wait to see what android will look and feel like on my N1.
I've put in every word I use in swype and I am now a swype ninja...

Has anyone tried out thus new launcher yet? It looks really cool but for 14.95 I dont think it's worth it. What for you all think?
Sent From My Evo Killer!
All the reviews so far have been that at 14.95 its DOA, it doesn't offer any features that other cheaper or free launchers don't.
Texted while driving
$15 for a launcher is outrageous. That thing better come with a PS3 emulator and God of War 3!
I had a cracked version of it...first impressions DO blow you away, the 3D home screens are fluid, smooth, colorfull, and there's PLENTY of them (more than 7, I believe...), they can be put in any order, be labeled, etc... There's no app drawer thou, all the apps have to be out there and you just cycle through them. The widgets included blow ALL the other launchers away (as someone who is TouchWiz biased and treasures the Program Monitor Widget that is an major statement...) In the beginning I was all-in and felt it MIGHT be worth at least 9.95 (but 15 is a bit much...), BUT after a week...it started crashing a lot (It takes up LOTS of internal memory, we're talking 115mb available for other stuff!) and I got fustrated and ditched it.
Bottom line, if it's been fixed and improved, it could be worth the money, but I wouldn't fork over 15 bucks for it yet...wait for a sale...
It's will definately change how you look at other launchers after you've had a taste.

Good info. I was actually thinking about throwing down the $$ to check it out but I'll wait now. 15$ is a bit steep unless it is getting rave reviews from everyone. Sticking with LP.
Version 1.0.1 works great in my x10. It does have a launcher now.
Just tried the cracked version after seeing this post. It's impressive, but i would never pay $15 for a launcher. If the price gets cut in half I'll be all over it.

Did you have to change any phone settings to get it to work? I also have a cracked version of it but when I select it from the launcher menu(from hitting the home button)it does nothing, it just goes blank and then boots into launcher pro instead.

So far I have to agree some of the widgets are better then others I have come across. However one major feature I find missing that was in all the reviews was the "Turn any app into a widget" Of course those reviews all had the produced labeled as Mobile Shell 5.

Currently after about 24 hours at 7.7mb and 58MB for SPB Shell memory usage.
Overall it to early to tell. However I have used SPB mobile shell for Windows Mobile for several years.

Hmmmm, Jus put on the latest cracked one, and it does have an app drawer NOW...the earlier releases didn't, this latest version is an improvement, but just like in the reviews mentioned, the restrictions on where apps can be put now is a headache, the other version, you could put apps anywhere due to no app drawer, I guess...Meh, imma play with this a lil while longer and see if its worth is...i'm sure the crack wont last, I've already seeing messages about market not verfying the purchase...
Update: After checking out the new version for an hour, I've had 3 FC's in which I had to pull the battery out. It might be accounted to ACS's New Frozen 1.1.0 ROM, which has been buggy in itself, but...if anyone has a stock rom, this might run a little better, or it might not...Still needs some work. I would wait, like I said for a sale, or more improvements...
Thanks for the insight on it. I've never ran it before. I would definitely like to try it but I don't want to dish 15 bucks if I don't like it. The return foe the market is only 15 mins. Maybe it will go on sale soon.

I played with it, and it's pretty, but I still think the beautiful simplicity of LauncherPro still beats it out. The scrollable dock is what keeps me with LP.
And what is this...Apple? $15 for an app???
Tried it. If it was any cheaper I would buy it. Great eye candy better than any launcher any phone maker makes. Not for those who love simple interface.

I downloaded it and demoed it for 15 minutes before refundning.
I found it nearly useless. A couple of the thins that are included are not available anywhere else but they are almost so pointless that I can't image a point in using them.
App folders that take up half the screen over just launching the app browser? Yeah...no.
The 3D carousel view is cool but ultimately useless I don't see any reason to use it over swiping from one homescreen to the next.
Frankly if there was something like it for OPEN apps, it would be ****ing awesome and a must have.
This? I can't get pretty much the same effect from Go Launcher.

SPB Shell 3D
I just bought and installed the SPB Shell 3D Launcher app. Not bad! The 3D effects are awesome, and it has some great Widgets. It was a little expensive, but I just couldn't resist buying it. Has anyone else gotten this? what do you think about it?
Tried it and would have been upset if I would have paid 15 bucks for it...
It got old and boring after a while. It looks pretty but it doesn't offer the same instant functionality of the original homescreen or adw or launcherpro.

I would like to know to owner who have DHD and O2X..which one is your most favourite smartphone? and why you choose it?
I had both phone, and i get confusing which one is better. My O2X is better in term of speed, but i dislike its interface software, i prefer more on htc sense.
so what do you think?
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
of curse the 2X
i rooted the device and deleted the lg software - using Lauchner Pro and its more than smooth...
i prefer the 2X display, 'cause it is not so big and much better/more beautiful !
only the battery drain makes the angry i got a bug - app '0' causes the drain... hope lg will fix it in the next update
all in all the 2X is the best device for me, currently
Compared the 2 today, the screen on the O2X is way better, and although the dhd has a very nice unibody, both phones feel very sturdy. I don't really like sense but it's definitely better than the lg UI. Personally i always install adw/ launcherpro. Where the O2X really shines though is gaming, it just destroys the dhd. One thing i really like about the dhd is the music player, not sure if you can install it on the O2X..

Pros of the O2X vs DHD
*The screen is so much more colorful.
*Battery life is just as good or better.
*Touch screen is better(Try slowly drawing a straight line fron the upper right corner to the lower left corner on DHD. You cant, it will be wavy).
*No HTCsense.com that still doesnt work after 6 month!!(This would be a minus if it had worked).
*Gestures! Instead of those silly arrows in the bottom of the HTC stock keyboard, the tapping on the side of the O2X works great, without taking up keyboard space. Great for curser moving if you want it to be accurate.
*The curved edges of the glass screen.
*Speed in the every day use neither phones lag. Games run more smooth though. Never experienced frame drops on O2X as I sometimes did on DHD.
*Front Camera: For when ever skype comes out with video chat for android..
Better on DHD:
*Weather widget and better widgets(didnt know the setup widgets was from HTC, but LG doesnt have it)
*Disable mobile view funtion in browser settings
*Previous/next page function in browser
*Notification/Charging LED
*Native flashlight/torch app!
*15 minutes delay on the password screen(Have to do it EVERY time on the LG, or none at all).
*Very good "Auto" brightness setting on the screen!(O2X is just like the Desire, too bright when its dark).
*OTA Updated via Mobile Data also(not just wifi like O2X)
I went back and read my initial reactions from when I just got it, and they are listed here too. A funny thing that I just noticed after reading through my post is that most of the stuff I like about my O2X is hardware, and most of the stuff I miss from my DHD is software related(and most of them can be solved by downloading free apps/widgets from the market).
Im not going to count software bugs and stuff, while in the daily day life the DHD was more "stable", htcsence.com never worked and sometimes I lost ALL my text messages, so it wasnt that perfect. Between HTC and LG´s software I would reccomend HTC to newbies and people that dont like messing around with settings, trying out new apps and such.
Oh and any user interface(Sense or whatever) is inferior to Go Launcher EX imo(and other launchers). That is why I only count widgets and menu points as something that adds value. Before I tried anything else than Sense, I thought the UI was good, but in reality is not all that.
Maybe i already get use to DHD after 6 month use it and not familier to ui of lg. Anyway, thank you guys for all your review. Keep it coming.
Thanks.

most things you find better on the dhd can also be changed or made working on the o2x
allthough the software widgets made by htc are native on the phone when you buy it there are lots of good alternatives for people that dont have a htc like there is a free backlight led app in the market, and beatiful widgets has the same clock/weather widget htc has if you find a propper skin for it.
the browser issue can be fixed with a 3rd party browser(dolphin w/e) allthough native non mobile page viewing would be really nice to have in the stock browser...
there isa custom made notification light for the o2x now which can be downloaded from somehwere here aswell.
the lockscreen can be changed with 3rd party software and there is a feature to change the pw refresh rate with this aswell.
so most of the things that were better on the dhd can be good on the o2x aswell but you just need to digg around a bit and it doesnt come native once you open the freshly bought phone but it can be tuned and tweaked to have the best of 2 worlds
just like to add that my previous phone was a dhd and i made the move to the o2x the second it came out and i never missed my htc since i got my o2x.

Well, we can safely say that the IPS screen beats the Super Lcd, and hardware wise the O2x wins as well, in design too, but not in software though.

Here a few point why i dislike my LGO2X..
1) its sms font is too big, difficult for me to see one long sms in single page. Its sms ui also too fancy to me..not suitable for corporate person like me.
2) its weather can not set update freq and location. I have to go to setting to update manually get current location.
3) its does not have restart option. Although many software in market, but all required to root. I dont want to root my phone since i dont want to lost my warranty, especially with reboot problem i face on O2X.
4) its camera sound during taking picture is ugly same like my old N95 phone (cheap phone).
5) its dont have data connection short cut. I have to go to
setting to activate it manually. There is software from market, but i already try all and it sometime function and not. I check setting, but data connection nothing change either i activate or deactivate the shortcut software download from market. Its look like its over write or something.
6) OTA update only available through wifi. Not mobile connection. How about if i dont have wifi in my house? But i have mobile connection data plan with my provider. Meaning this data plan is useless!! No meaning i pay my bil monthly to my provider if i can not use it to the limit!!
Thats all until now..i will edit more when i found others thing that i though. ;P

1) Just use another SMS program then, I use handcent on all my android devices anyway.
2) I agree
3) I use LG 2X recovery boot from the market to reboot my phone.
4) just goto settings/shutter sound and CHANGE it for one you like then.
5)I use apn droid to turn on/off my data.
6)OTA update is working over the air for some networks, this is just network dependent not device dependent.
My mate has the DHD and is a bit of a noob, so when I have to use his phone to find things on the web for hime I actually cringe at the speed or should I say the slowwwwwnessss of the web surfing on it. We tried miren that I use on my O2X on his DHD but it was still as slow as hell, and thats even before flash sites kick in.
I have been using the free version for awhile and it is by far my favorite launcher. I just realized there is a pay version now and want to know if anyone has bought it? If so is it worth buying? What is the big difference in the pay version and the free version and benefits, etc etc?
Thanks for the help, I hardly ever buy apps but I really love this launcher and am curious if it is worth the money.
Derek
Yup, bought it and using it
It does not appear to fc as much as the free one (I had that all the time, esp on install of apps). I love the 'copy & paste' of shortcuts. I never had a different landscape page because I could not be bothered to add everything again. Now I can copy, rotate, and paste.
The slide transition seems much better too. Before it was too fast or jerky. You can also have different wallpaper for each page (not just each page type). My RAM usage is down too, although I do not know yet if this is related.
Generally the dev is putting new feature in the paid app. Some will be added to the free one after an interval, some will not, if I understand it correctly. More than happy to support such dev, anyway, of course!
I went ahead and bought it. Seems a lot smoother to me and it was tough because I usually don't find apps worth buying but this launcher is so unique. Definitely a good purchase, even my wife who isn't into all this "stuff" said she liked it and that was amazing coming from her!
From the Beast : Galaxy Note
I've actually been trying to get down to one screen (after a suggestion from another thread). Now I love the transition so much I am not going to! I have reduced it to three screens, however.
The 'slide' was too jerky, possibly too fast. Now it is great!
Man! The SS Launcher is as snappy as it gets. I had never even heard of it til this thread. I am running it on a stock Infuse and it acts like it just hit the crack pipe!
Wow.
Just my 2¢
When using the pinch to zoom feature in the browser, gmail, maps etc I noticed there is a delay in that your fingers have to travel a certain distance before the phone/OS start reacting to the command and begin zooming, Once it begins to zoom its very responsive, it's just the initial delay when you first begin to initialize the zoom.
After the Jelly Bean update on my last phone the Galaxy Nexus I've become so accustom to a instantly responsive experience that this is driving me nuts. The phone is great in every other way, that's my only gripe but I haven't noticed anyone else complain which really surprises me. I'm really interested in trying this on the Optimus G to see if it's hardware related or the new version of Jelly Bean.
i believe its been like that for awhile. I guess its just the way android works. it doesnt want you to accidentally pinch to zoom when you might be trying to do something else
Yes, that's true. But the zooming out is not affected, only the zooming in. Should be a software issue. It doesn't bother me.

Yep you're correct zooming out is not affected which lead me to realize something. If you space your finger apart and zoom you wont get the delay. So it's definitely something where the phone is not recognizing multi-touch input until your fingers are spaced out.
Yep. This isn't an issue with just gmail, try and zoom within gallery. It's almost too stiff.

seems not to be hardware related (puh...) check out this guy pinching and zooming on optimus g:

its definatly not hardware related...see above post... as for the argument that androids been lik this for some time is horse apples... and there is only the zooming feature that involves multitouch in the UI ..so saying it is to avoid mistaken inputs is also wrong... its definatly a software BUG which is to be fixed...
It is a software problem. Basically the screen is set to recognise touches as taps even after a certain amount of movement and not as swipes to allow for some movement of the finger and not be overly sensitive. The SGS2 had this 'problem' as well, but a guy (I think his name is vitalij, not 100% sure though) found where this value was stored and it could be tweaked perfectly afterwards. So I wouldn't worry a lot about this, probably it'll be solved similarly in the foreseeable future.
btw guys check out firefox it doesnt have the problem!
its much better
i made a video here

I tried a N4 today and it was present in the gallery but not maps.

Very true, just tested, so far iv found it in all browsers except Firefox and in the gallery
This is probably just google designing around a patent. Function patents need to describe extremely specific methods. This lets you design around them. Some vendors (ahem, Samsung) tend to use the "best" way instead of properly designing around, but the reason that Apple hasn't attacked Google directly is because Google designs around pretty well.
I hope all of you guys are reporting this to google here:

Make a comment...the more comments, the higher on their priority it should become. Right now it only has a paltry 26 comments, so they won't think of it as a problem.
I'm suprised so few people are bothered by this issue. I for one am getting extremely annoyed everytime I try to zoom in the browser or gallery app. I settled with using just double tap for a while, since in my opinion pinching is not usable. I only just started using firefox. What a difference! Why the hell don't googles own app zoom properly like that??
I think it's a real shame googles own apps don't work properly on their own Nexus flagship phone for crying out load... this issue deserves more attention from google!
edit: I could not find a ticket about this specific issue (only about generic screen sensitivity) so I created one. If you think this issue is as annoying as I do, please star it/leave a comment so it will get noticed by google.

Is there a fix for this problem in any custom roms?
I don't find it that bad in gallery but I must admit that pinch to zoom on Chrome is a real nightmare for my eyes. Just try Firefox or aosp browser. The difference is heaven and earth. The best way to see the difference is to magnitude the view as much as you can and then swipe. Scrolling on Chrome will be just physically painful. Firefox or aosp browser feels incomparably smoother.
I also came from Galaxy Nexus and I agree totally with OP about its swiping experience. After JB update pinching to zoom was being registered instantly and swiping felt almost perfect. Perhaps it has something to do with the lower touch sensitivity (due to new drivers that came with 4.2.2).

In the MIUI Rom there's not the pinch to zoom issue. Hope someone can use it to solve the problem once and for all
If you want an instant pinch to zoom just put your fingers a little bit far from each other when you start pinching.
This is why zooming in works well for you guys
