Aaargh! - What the hell is going on with my Start Menu - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Help...!
Something crazy just happened to my start menu...
Anyone seen this kind of craziness before...?
Seemed to fix with a soft reset, but I don't want it to happen again, meaning I have to soft reset all the time...

do you use the normal start menu as default or the one provided by tf3d

tf3d provides different start menu?

yes, the tf3d one is bigger and a little finger friendly

Maybe try this:
a) go to \Windows\Start Menu
b) rename Programs folder to something else
c) rename it back to Programs
This should reload Start Menu's recent positions.

Everything's normal, just a freakout by WM, I suspect...
Soft reset fixes it...
Luckily, it seems like it was a once off...

real trouble with smartskey

i've read all the posts about installing and running smartskey, yet continue to have a real problem. i placed the .exe and.ini files in a new folder (smartskey) within the windows directory on my device. when i run it, it appears that everything works fine..hold left key opens start menu and hold right closes running application. after a few minutes, holding left key does not open start menu..i hear the system sound, as if it is starting, yet nothing. in fact, i can't even use the touchscreen to open it..must soft reset. any ideas what could be causing this? could it be that i am using wisbar advance and it opens a cascading menu? seems that would not be the problem as it works fine for a few minutes.
solved
well, after visiting the wisbar forum, I have an answer to my own question. smartskey works fine with wisbar, it just craps out when you close the start menu with the softkey. once you do that, the startmenu will not come back up unless you soft reset.

Recently Used Apps menu

Can someone tell me how to "clear" the recently used apps when you hit the start menu? I find it cluttering and would like to clear it if not eliminate it altogether. Any ideas? Thanks!
sometimes help soft reset, but not everytime..
there is a software.. called.. "clearmenu", or "clearitem".. or just "clear" which is attached to many cooked rom, that is to be installed to your Windows/Startup folder.. which will clear everything in your most recent used list on every soft reset. You can clear it without soft reset, in case you are wondering. and soft reset will not do the job if you dont have the software.
i do not want to spam this thread and discuss it with you, but do not agree with

interesting.. but can I check with you the OS that you are using? Or, better still, you just go into your "\Windows\Start up\" to check if there are anything there, that starts with a 'clear'?
Anyway, since you said "sometimes" soft reset works, I would assume that it is not a repeatable process. If that's the case, probably that the 'sometimes' is the case where the regsitry got messed up and the 'recent used list' gone, and hence coincidently it worked as you wanted to.
Anyway, it is quite a new discovery, but just check with me the `start up` menu (better still, list everything there, can't be too much stuff there), to see if there are any working ones there.
ok, what i want to say is that clearing with apps you mentioned is not only one solution and as you correctly typed, it is done only "sometimes" and i was never trying find out when this happened (or why). now correct?
Help
Ok, guys, there has to be a better way to clean out the recently used apps menu. Anyone???
there is a registry hack... anyone????
Use MortScript and create a text file called cleanup.mscr and place the following in there:
Code:
ErrorLevel off
RegDeleteKey HKCU,Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch,1,1
Place this file in \Windows\StartUp and it will clean up the Recent Menu Items in the Start Menu at every reboot.
big thanks!
do you happen to know the reg location of "recent programs" listed in "start"?
Delete the string entries in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch then soft-reset. That'll get rid of the recently used app list on the Start Menu.
I have been using the attached file since I had my Wizard and it works great on my Kaiser too! Just put the "startclean.exe" in your "\windows\startup" folder and it will remove the most recently used apps from the menu after each soft reset.
Someone posted this file a long time ago and I can no longer find the thread.
Use this program !!
http://mobile-sg.com/software/?p=ClearTemp&platform=ppc
soft reset is OPTIONAL !!
Maybe I am overlooking something... but, is there a way to permanently prevent recently used applications from showing up in the Start menu?
Thanks!

2 most recent programs in start menu are duplicating

This is kind of bizarre...every time I click on my start menu, the number of items shown as the recently run programs just duplicate themselves! For example, if I have two items there, the next time I click on my start menu I will have 4, and then 6, 8,10,12, etc...
Aside from that, once the list goes over 10, the start menu turns white and I can only see the icons without the text labels of what they are.
Anyone else run into this or know how to fix it?
Yes, had the same thing. Backed up my PIM data, then HR'ed and it was the last I saw of the double-then-white start menu.
But it was EXTREMELY annoying, damn right.
Ah, one more thing: you mislabeled the issue but described it accurately: it's always two latest entries that get doubled, until the whole goes out of bounds and turns white...
Fixed part of the title
I HR'd a couple times and continued to have the same problem after re-installing various software...so I tried being more deliberate on installing the software and testing things out after each install (if for some reason having a certain program in the list was causing the problem). So far things are good.
i had the problem when i was using the Cube on my phone. I changed from the original 3 sided cube to the Sclpc++ cube and no longer have the problem. So if you are using one of the cubes, that may possibly be the problem.
I thought about using another, but ended up going with sclpc++ from the get-go. There's a -slight- possibility that the problem could have been from accidentally trying to run multiple instances of efrost's touchflo software. But that's just a theory...and from what it sounds like, the problem occurs in different instances that aren't visibly linked.
you might be on to something as I've just realized that the whole thing started soon after my changing ROMs to Schaps' 4.31 AND installing a cube with its own FtouchFlo config... right now, I'm using an older cube (Vista-style by poorlyduck), but have deactivated Schaps' TouchFlo. And haven't run into the white menu since.
Then again, it may be just an unfortunate combination of installed soft and/or customizations...
I'm not so sure that it is the cube though...I ran into this problem when I first received my tilt and was isntalling software on the stock image. After removing and the SR'ing the device followed by the software re-install, the problem went away...granted it only happened once. Regardless of when it happens, it seems thusfar to correct itself after re-installing/removing software so it's hard to say exactly what's causing it.
This happens to me at least once every two weeks. I have found that it occurs when program shortcuts get moved down to the bottom box on the start menu and are then grouped in with the "Programs" and "Settings" folders. If you go into "settings" then click "menus" and change a few check marks around it should reset, however there will still be a shortcut or two on the bottom box. Another thing to try is to go into the windows folder then the start menu folder and just play around in there until it goes away...maybe delete the shortcuts in question and then recopy them back if they disappear from the start menu. Uninstalling and reinstalling the offending programs works as well, it's just a little more hassle in my eyes. My two noob cents.

Try checking this out here...I'll be trying this out being as this has been a suggested solution to the problem.

Thanks dude that worked..!! I just cut/pasted the shortcuts to another folder and then pasted them back when it was working fine...
Oh and for me the problem occurred after installing touchflo and sclpc++

Can't disable TouchFLO 3D... Any ideas?

Hello,
I've received my Diamond a few days ago, have a little fun with TF3D, but then I would like to go back to old good PocketBreeze...
So I entered Settings - today and... I can't "un-tick" the TF3D option! :? I can move it up and down but simply can't disable it!
Does anyone know how to pass such limitation?
Of course I know that I can use SecondToday but I prefer to disable TF3D completely and release some memory.
U can try hard resetting it. I don't think it's normal not be able to disable it. If that doesn't work > Flash an other ROM? Make sure u have Hard SPL.
You simply need to clean your autostart folder.
Just leave "poutlook" in for proper Windows pushmail support.
After a Soft Reset you can switch off the TF Element in Settings. To use it again, simply tick it on again.
Hmmm... I think I found the problem. I've made a hard-reset of the device and it's gone!
I guess the problem must have been in some kind of the seller/operator changes made to the device - because when I first turned it on i did not have to go through the whole "tapping process" - and after manual hard reset I have to align the screen. set the date etc. Strange but true...

"PTT Window failed" message on boot

I did the PTT registry edit fix (created two new keys, deleted the PTT key), and did a soft reset. Upon restarting, I got a series of windows saying "PTTwindow failed". I can deal with this, since I don't restart my phone every day, but is there any way I can get rid of the windows anyway?
Also, is there any way to quit a program other than pressing the "X" at the top right of the screen? Like, maybe assigning it to a button? It's all the way in the corner and sometimes my big fingers have trouble hitting it correctly.
Try going to \Windows\Startup and seeing if there is any PTT related shortcut, and if there is, delete it. On my old AT&T ROM, PTT used to load on startup, so I disabled it that way.
And yes, if you go to button settings, and select the button, at/near the top of the list of commands, select "OK/Close".
Dave
There was a PTT related shortcut and I removed it. Soft resetted and still get the messages: "PTT FindWindowFailed" and "PTT Unregister Class Failed".
And the OK/Close button just minimizes my programs, doesn't end them. If I leave them running won't it drain my battery faster? I am using Spb mobile shell, if it makes any difference.
What happens if you rename or backup then delete the PTT program? I think it's in the \Windows folder. If you delete anything, I would highly recommend backing up every file you delete.
And I would guess that although background programs would drain battery a little more, mobile shell probably drains just as much.
Hope that helps,
Dave
Thanks Dave - I found that there was a PTTFix program on my Tilt (I don't remember installing it - as I said I did the manual registry edit), and when I deleted the PTTFix program the boot popups stopped. I appreciate your help!
Sure, glad it all worked out.
Dave
