Is there a common list of applications that are known to stay resident and either slow down the performance (or secondarily, drain battery power)?
I've been trying to figure out why my phone, at times, slows down to an almost crawl. At first I suspected aHome, but having removed and reinstalled it, no dice.
I know there's an app review thread, but they tend to be based on initial impressions. Do we have a list anywhere of the apps that are resource hogs?
I know for a fact the browser can slow the phone the eff down when the cache gets too big. Flushing the cache can do wonders for the speed of the entire OS.
AndNav2! slows the phone down too (while it's running that is). But it's quite an advanced app, so that's understandable.
Wallpaper Set & Save can slow the phone down a bit too, indirectly, if you use it to set a heavy/large PNG pic as wallpaper. The regular wallpaper app compresses the wallpaper image to avoid this.
Yeah a large cache does slow the phone down even w the cache on the sdcard.

No kidding! Wow, thanks mannyb, that made a big difference in performance. The G1 is now more responsive. I had flushed the browser cache, as well as maps, twidroid, and several other apps. I was beginning to consider uninstalling dxTop looking at that app as the source of latency. It was the wallpaper settings. I used the wallpaper app instead and it made all the difference.
This is a very useful thread. Keep the tips coming in.
My only complaint would be the browser. Good lord does it kill the OS.
Actually, I've found wifi to significantly slow down the OS.
So how do you delete the caches on the sd card?
Is it just clear cache from browser setting
I was also wondering how to clear cache on other apps as well if installed on sd card

Yeah, it's unfortunate but it is a very noticeable difference if you're using a heavy PNG pic as wallpaper via Wallpaper Set & Save. Unfortunately you'll lose a lot of quality using the default wallpaper app, but sometimes it's worth it.
You don't lose much quality if you pre-size your wallpapers using GIMP, Photoshop or a comparable program, to the 640x480 wallpaper size.

Thanks that's what I was going to add in. Your wallpaper should be 640x480 - and keep the file size down. All my stuff is below 200K and runs fine.

Depends on what one means with "lose much quality" of course, but for me the difference in quality is huge, even if you're using a wallpaper that is 640x480.
See this for reference, same wallpaper (at 640x480), left one was set using the default wallpaper feature and the right one using Wallpaper Set & Save. Enlarged 400%:

Huge difference in detail, color depth, crispness.
I feel that wallr (app) is slowing my phone down especially when you set it to change at your given interval.
locale. definitely locale.
Weatherbug slows it down a bit but oh well i love it!
Weatherbug unfortunately is going to be the next victim in my quest to speed things up. I love it as well, but it's constantly getting stuck or I'm getting the forced closed message.
And it hasn't had an update in ages - wish someone was actively working on keeping it more responsive.
Phonebook from VoxMobile and MyBackup are 2 biggest resource hogs that I know about. Both are worthless IMHO.
I know that clearing out SMS messages helps as well, but I'm reluctant to do it again until I have a good backup program. I did use txtbackup, but looking for something a little more robust first.

MyBackup is great for SMS.. just dont backup/restore your gmail contacts with it if you're every going to sync with google again.. all kinds of headaches occur (I had to delete ALL of my contacts from google and start over..)

Has anyone downloaded the free preview for this app? It looks awesome and has a user edit built in.
Finally a different home setup that really changes the interaction.
Yep - MASSIVE editing abilities. Great start and should hopefully get better. The app scrolling is faster than the standard Android home in my experience, no lag at all! Few force closes while editting here and there but mostly remembers what you edited when it relaunches. Calendar seems broken for me, only shows a handful of what appointments I actually have coming up. Still in Beta though so with improvements could be exceptional.
Tried it out last night, not really my cup of tea. I like Open Home much better. Also, it force closed on me countless times, untill it just got too annoying and I uninstalled.
OK this thing has some pretty great potential. I'm going to build some screens and upload screen shots later. EG, no need for folders, you can create a realtime scrolling tray and drag apps into it.
Good stuff so far. Shows a lot of potential. I think you should be able to span background wallpapers like in normal home, and not just the same image stretched for every pane. I think there also needs to be more controls over the layout options. Good start. I wish the other home alternatives had this kind of customization.
Maybe I'm just lazy or maybe it's that I've gotten used to using dxTop, but the layout of it is horrendous! I mean, I even think all the screens of aHome is better than that. Up, home, right, home, left, home, etc. I found it annoying within the first 5 minutes.
its not about UI right now
this has more potential than all the other home screen changing applications which mostly all they do is change icons...and added extra screens, this goes beyond it and makes your G1 efficient and business savy, recent calls, texts, etc all in front of the screen.. like yes it has UI problems, but the potential of ACTUAL customization is beyond these other applications, and they charge..
with their lite versions etc.
it has made the home page a personal thing, and isn't that what we all love, personalization.

For introductions, that's all it's about. I'm not talking about themes or anything else, but the layout is crap. The idea may be good and maybe if those tabs stayed on each screen so you don't have to constantly go back to the center to get anywhere it would be more efficient. But, as it stands if I'm not impressed by how it looks, I'm not even going to waste my time in testing it out...same as how I won't give a website a chance if it's appearance is lacking. First impressions are everything.
so im guessing, judge a book by its cover.
i agree with the UI being hideous.
but compared to ahome, dxtop and open home, all they're done is the same thing, a couple widgets, extra pages (that just move differently from each other) and changing icons. that's it..
yehs, sweeter home is not good to look at, its the ugly duckling right now, but with all its features and the developer open for suggestions and implementing things, it's far better than the other home applications.
i gave it a chance and tested the product out before making any ASSUMPTIONS and i like the features but not the UI, but everything is a work in progress and the developer actually went beyond just chaning major icons, adding an extra page and widgets like what OTHER HOME applications have already done.
I make no assumptions, merely observations. I don't like the UI and attraction is the first step to any partnership. I never said I wasn't willing to give it a shot later, you assumed that. I said as it is now, it sucks.
From my experience with dxTop, the UI works with the theme I have on my phone. There are no extra downloads or specifics that I have to implement. I'm not saying it's the best, but that's a lot better than any of the others are doing.
Tried it, a little too much for me.
I like it simple. Open Home for me.
Here's screen 1, 2 and 3 I've set up so far. Few bugs I've found (app TRAY has started duplicating the actual apps in it for every new tray added, not sure why)... anyway, looks pretty good and once more stability and features are released this will be my default home I think...
Left is SMS's with quick links to contact apps below.
Middle is (top) most used apps, (middle) all apps, (bottom) communication apps, (here's where I want more app trays but won't really work atm, I want a utils tray, games try, notes tray, and comms tray with all apps on a different screen).
Right is contact list.
--- Photobucket died right when I updated the images, stand by --
I think I figured out the tray duplication thing, just gotta test it. RENAME the trays! LOL.
EDIT: updated screen above. Got extra trays working - all scroll horizontally. Added labels to app trays and added labels to SMS and contacts list.
Next: "all" apps tray on the lower screen, and skin the calendar (even though it's broken) on the top screen...
I tried getting this app last night and a few times today but I keep getting "download unsecessful".

Can't find it man, I think I got it from http://g1wallz.com/ - or maybe in the wallpapers topic on here? I'll upload it later when I get time.
See, I cant find it in my market. Im assuming that Im having so much trouble with my market because I have an ADP Phone? I cannot purchase, Ahome or Open home (the paid versions dont show up)
i can't find it on market either- i did yesterday but it gave me download unsuccessful. since then i can't find it- maybe it has been taken off for fixing or something?
I tried backing it up with Astro but couldn't do it.

Because of the bloat the EspressoUI had, I loaded LauncherPro. Much better memory management. However, I'd like to continue to use some of the Espresso/Sense widgets. (Namely peep, messenger, and the clock with the weather app built in.) Anyone know how to do this? Or must I wait for root?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
can't be done even with root. The Sense widgets require the sense ui to be running. no other way to get them to work. This has been asked probably 10+ times over at the official forums. always the same answer. thats just how HTC made sense.
Then I guess I have my first project, once I get my development computer in order.

You realize sense is still running in the background? So your theory of better memory management is kinda null. I really don't see what everyones complaints are with sense, it flies for me. So if your seeing any improved speed its probably just placebo, or the fact that those same widgets you want to run or no longer running if you deleted them.

I am pretty sure this is the reason. I think it's a problem of monkey see, monkey kinda do... They're seeing some people complain about the internal memory being eaten up most likely due to Sense, and are automatically associating that with performance issues. I think mine flies as well using the Sense UI, I just dislike the look, and would rather have more internal room.
For me it's not a monkey see monkey do. I force stop, and turn off Sense completely. It doesn't run in the background anymore. I do get a memory boost because the MyFaves app, and some of the other things are no longer running. That is where I see the performance boost. Don't get me wrong, the Espresso/Sense is nice, but it has two issues. It runs a lot of stuff in background, whether or not you have the widget on screen. And second, it isn't as functional or customizable yet. I was more so asking the first question though, because I'd like to continue using the peep widget once we get root, and I use a different rom.
Do you have a task manager? I just installed adw just to test this out. After selecting as default home, I close sense, check my app manager and sure enough it started right back up. As for the my faves, its never running for me once I end it with the task manager. ADW and all these launchers are straight though I just cant stand having them running on top of each other, once there root launcher.apk is replacable
For the sake of thoroughness, I grabbed three different task managers. Of the three, only one saw HTC Sense, and it wasn't running or tying up memory, it simply recognized it as a system process waiting to start. You also do not need a "Task Manager" for two main reasons. You have a far better one built into the Setting -> Applications -> Running Services. Second, when an application is no longer being used it goes into what is called OnPause(), then goes to OnStop(). Now in the OnStop() state, yes it is holding memory, waiting for the OnResume() command to take effect so you can pick up where you left off. If another program needs said memory, then the OnStop() process is killed from memory, so the new activity can utilize it. Task managers are just adding to your bloat. HTC Sense is an activity that is constantly running, thus it never truly goes into OnPause(), and it keeps a hold of what memory it takes. That is why I wanted to drop it like a bad habit. And yes, I do agree with you, once we get root, and can install whatever boot.apk we want, then things will be really nice. But I'd still want to find some way of getting the Peep.apk to stand alone because it is a very nice twitter app.
EDIT: I have stated in other threads that I am a newbie level developer. I believe what I posted to be correct. However, if what I have stated above is incorrect, then by all mean, I apologize, and welcome the correction/education.
The phone works fine without Sense, and much faster.
I am trying the Slide2G1 rom on my G1, and once I installed ADW, I deleted Rosie, and all the htc widgets from /system/app. This greatly speeded up the phone, while also allowing me to use the HTC styled apps like calendar and dialer without the overhead of sense as well.
How do we disable sense? Just kill the process running?

+1 on that, i have yet to bog mine down and believe me i try, in fact my slide runs just as fast as my buddy's droid incredible.
In my own the best way to get rid of sense is to use a launcher set it as default (I prefer adw) then go into settings/ applications/ manage applications. Then clear all data and defaults from from anything sense then delete them from system/app then delete them from data/data.
Also a real good clock widget with the weather that works with launchers is fancy I also did a themed version of the fancy widget I'll post later if anyone is interested

This should work with all launchers. Only tested on adw
I am having a problem with my screen, this has been a ongoing thing for a while now. I am running cm6 extremely blue from the 19th of Oct, no kernel mod. When I do a clean install my screen displays all images just fine. After a few days some images start looking really bad, instead of the colors blending they become bands of different colors. Its really hard to explain so I attached a screenie of the XDA app, the brown looks horrible. I know thats not the way it is as I have seen the colors blend together, no thick color lines. I ant figure it out for the life of me, is this happening on everyones phones? I dont recall it runnng Fresh rom, and like I said it takes a couple days for it to start happening on cm6. I found a few things in awd launcher that I can disable to help the situation, like wallpaper hack, scrolling widget support, turning these off and or on will help it look better on desktop, but on apps I found nothing to help improve. Could something need editing in the XML files? Or are we all seeing these lines and just dealing with them? Any feedback is appreciated
Oh, and once it starts this even a nandroid back to when it was fine doesnt help. Only a clean install does.
and happens with both apps2sd and internal storage.

This is not occurring on my pictures, gallery. My home screen is fine, as well as calendar widget. Thoroughly in handcent the gray bar up top has the color lines, slacker also has it toward the bottom where it get brighter. Could it be something in framework, maybe I can edit some sort if default setting to use 16 bit, because it looks like 8 bit graphics

I sound like your talking about dithering, like instead of something that should be a gradient it is instead broken up and where you would normally see a smooth transition from a color to color its broken with lines.
Heres some suggestions
cm settings > performance settings : enable surface dithering (which improves image quality but slows the phone some what).
reboot you phone at least once a day.
your screen density might be to high (or low) in your build.prop file.
Updated to extremely blue Oct 25 and problem is gone. Chances are in 2 or 3 days it will be back though

I had set build prop to 150 on all three, the 3rd being default. This has been a issue for some time now. I will leave build prop alone and see what happens. You are exactly right about what I am trying to explain the issue is. Can I set to 150, and what else can or can not be changed? Changing the default density to 150 was something I had never done before, screen would do this at the default 160 as well.

Are you saying your phone is running for a couple of days and then it does it, cause I daily reboot is highly recommended. The phone just doesn't have the internal memory to render the graphics on images with alot of colors.
I would try a 140 on the density.

Well yes and no, it will happen after a few days but I do reboot daily, sometimes a few reboots per day. When I edit build prop I am using Root Explorer, it saves the old file. Should I delete this file, maybe it us confusing the system? Also can I edit the default setting to 140? Thank you for your help and concern

Build prop it is! I tried 140 and still messed up so I tried changing the default to 140 also. That did not help I took all three settings back to 160 and my screen went back to clean and clear. Why can others change the dpi, am I needing to changes something else along with the 2 numbers?
Thank You!

v2.0 - View comments
v2.0 - Apply filters to wallpapers before saving them (black and white, etc.)

gtg i had one of your roms on my samsung infuse before i switched also. glad to see you!
Very nicely done. Simple and straight to the point.
At first glance, I thought the button in the app bar was to "download" rather than "load more" photos. I expected the app to automatically load photos as I reached the bottom of the list.
Still, very well done, and its awesome that it automatically grabs a proper sized wallpaper from interfacelift, which is a great site too btw.
Oh my god I love you.
This app is fantastic, thanks!

Was totally gonna suggest a method to save favorite images. Great work!
Live tiles would be awesome too. Maybe have it pull random or newly added images. Something like that.
Also, not a big fan of the app tile. The app is so Metro-focused, and the tile for the app itself is so completely un-Metro, it just doesn't fit.

Haha. No idea, but when I think of one I'll let you know.
I figure something simple and clear, that conforms with the user's accent color.
Edit: Just threw together something real quick. Simple and to the point, matches the user's accent tile, has both the ApplicationIcon.png and Background.png. Just a phone with a paintbrush in it. Something like that.
Thanks for the idea prjkthack. I went with something very similar to your suggestion.

Haha. I was totally thinking about that one too, with the brush actually painting something, but I felt a simpler image would have sufficed and was more Metro without getting too complicated or busy.
Looks great! Great work! =]
Just uploaded a slightly newer build of v1.3. Shifted the large tile icon up a couple pixels, changed wording in one place, and fixed the scroll bars that went missing in the previously uploaded version.
Just submitted v1.4 to the Marketplace.
Changes:
App redesigned to incorporate a panorama view with a dynamic background showcasing the latest wallpaper
New Popular page that features the most downloaded wallpapers from the past two weeks
Removed the donation option (no one used it)
Minor bug fix
Screenshots:
As usual, a xap is available for those who are developer unlocked.
v1.4 just dropped in the Marketplace. A couple small changes since the last beta xap was posted. Get it while it's hot.
Also, check out the app after setting your phone theme to light. I don't see many apps with both dark and light themed panorama views (usually they remain the same regardless of your theme), so I took it upon myself to do so.
App doesn't seem to work, it throws a "Can't reach InterfaceLIFT" error every time I open it.
I'm connected to 3G and Wifi, and InterfaceLIFT is up, so what's the deal?
Edit: Apparently, the app stops working entirely if you're connected to a PC when you try to use it (even if Zune isn't running on the PC). Works now, but the background image on the panorama has terrible banding. I believe there's a setting for bit-depth in Visual Studio that fixes this (it's 16-bit by default, needs to be 32bit).

Also, I don't see any way to set the bit depth of a panorama background. I've only noticed very slight banding on a couple backgrounds, but most don't show any on my Titan or 800.
Been playing around with the free version of Big Launcher a bit before I decide if it s worth making the $5 plunge for the Full Version,.. It just might have some potential on the Rooted Nook..

Looks nice and clean enough for the home screen. However the added functionalities (phone, contacts, sms) might make it a bit too bloated. At the moment I'm quite happy with launcher7 with minimalistic icons and visual effects stripped off.
Can you please post some screenshots or photographs on how it looks on the nook screen?
I just started playing around with the free version, so havent done much, but I think zecoj may be right. It looks good, but seems a little bloated..

Agree, its configuration interface is quite unintuitive to work with but once it's set up and backed up in TB, all is well.
Hum... Doesen't suit's me.
Wastes too much screen area.
Thanks for the screenshots, anyway!

I'm trying to minimize memory footprint and keep things simple on my NST. I've gone for a "Launcherless" approach, trying to avoid ever seeing the Launcher as much as possible. I don't like to spend a lot of time playing with the device. I try to focus on USING it for reading and productive things. The last thing I want to do is make my nice little Android device look like a poor wannabe imitation of a Microsoft product!
1. Most of the time, I use my reader for ... reading. I use the Mantano Reader to completely replace the B&N Home, Library and Reader apps:
2. When I'm doing something else, I usually only use a handful of apps (4) bound to the B&N QuickMenu using Nook Touch Tools:
3. If I need any other apps, I go to my ADW Launcher EX home screen. Very rarely do I get this far, and anything else is in the app drawer:
I could use ADW Launcher to save a bit more memory, but ADW EX lets me get those big icons. It's a pain to configure since some of the menus don't show (white text on white background), but I've figured it out with a bit of poking around. Once I've done the basic setup, changing things around is simple and quick.
I've previously used FolderOrganizer to get quick menus on the Notification screen, but I didn't like having yet-another launcher running in the background.

Definitely plan on trying out Mantano..
As for Launchers, I go back and for between ebooklauncher, and ReLaunch. There are features of both I really like, just wish I was experienced enough to try and combine them, lol
Mantano
Yes, you should definitely try Mantano - best pdf handling i found so far.
Ah, thanx for the launchet - it looks nice and tidy!
