I was watching Transformers yesterday and today i watched another movie on my tilt. I realized that the movie lags a bit and quality isn't that good. The movies are dvdrips, however when playing you can see a lot of blurry squares at times. Also the sound is horrible. The sound about half a second later after the character actually mouths what is being said. So i can i fix these two problems? I am using TCPMP so any help with the settings on how to solve the issues would be great. Thanks

First of all check the file you have converted by watching it on your PC. Some freeware conversion packages are crap and audio lagging and 'blocking' are present in the converted files.
Secondly, make sure you have converted to a reasonable screen resolution and frame rate. Playing anything above a 640x480 res on any PDA causes it to convert 'on the fly' and slows down playback.
I have many films in avi (not DivX!) format on a WLHDD2.5 wireless HDD and can play them very well over WiFi (use Resco Explorer to access network drive).

Amen, If you re encode movies correctly they play just fine on a tilt. I watch mine all the time even with BT headphones on which stress the cpu and the tilt even more. I change the audio sync to -0.500 for the headphones and -0.250 for regular viewing in coreplayer and the audio and video is perfectly in sync. I tryed the new version of coreplayer and the quality is superb. I quess thats why I have a dvd player also. I really dont need to watch a 4 gig dvd file on my tilt when a few minutes encoding it properly works just fine to throw it on my 6 gig sd card at a puny 250 meg file then. I have no skips, artifacts, or crappy picture. Most people are amazed when they see it playing on my tilts screen. Its a ppc phone. If I want a cinematic experince, I fire up my HD dlp projector and watch it on the 12 foot screen at home.
Me too . I'm watching live free or die hard now. Have seen about 3 movies on my Tilt and s9 headphones and it's great! PM me if you want the link for the movie(s).

Although not addressed to me, you ought to convert a dvd that you already have, or rip if off a website first. In order to convert a dvd movie, you do need conversion software. There are literally numerous recommended software to enable you to do this.
Although this one is not perfect, I use a software called 'super' on my laptop. It is freeware by the way and probably is not as top notch as paid for products. I've also never converted a full movie length video as well, just clips. But I assume it would work.
Once its converted, copy the converted movie to your memory card (if you have one) or your device. (The former is more ideal however)
I think it has also been inferred that you don't have to have conversion software to play a dvd movie on your device, but it will consume alot of your memory if you put a 700MB movie on your device
Which is why you use software such as Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn to shrink the file down to 320 x 240, turning an 800MB file to 200MB.
Also with Ashampoo, you can tell it what size you're aiming for, so if you want the file to shrink to 100MB, it will tell you what sort of quality it will be. but I usually shrink mine down to between 170MB - 300MB, depending on the length of the film.

Video playback is fine. No lag, it's just like watching a standard movie on a tiny screen . I have my audio synced at -200 in TCPMP which solves any delay. Everything can be found in this thread

One more question, do you use Ashampoo Movie and Shrink or Kingdia Video Converter? On this thread you mentioned Ashampoo, and on the other thread you mentioned Kingdia Video Converter
I use Kingdia to convert my files to .avi format, then Ashampoo to shrink them down to 320 x 240. Although thinking about it, i've never actually tried to shrink any other type of file format using ashampoo, perhaps you can shrink .mp4/.wmv/etc straight to .avi using ashampoo, give a try and let me know!

I don't normally have my video clips at AVI format. I normally have it a 3GP or MPG. Why AVI?

I was wondering if to sync your audio at -200, do you have to go to 'Settings' and then 'buffering' and then change the figure in 'preload for audio' to '-200 kb'
Well I use .avi as it's good compression, you could have a film in .wmv that is about 2GB, whereas in .avi it'd only be 700MB.
As for your seconf question, to sync your audio in TCPMP, go to Options > Select Page > Advanced, and you're looking for the "Manual A/V offset +/-" box. And I actually lied, mine's currently set to -270, not - 200. But it depends how much faster your eyes work compared to your ears

I'll be putting those values in now. Thanks again. But I still would have thought converting a movie to '3GP' would save alot more space, but the quality of the video would probably be poorer. I've noticed this when using the programme 'Super' to convert video clips to 3GP in comparison to converting the very same video clips to MPG. I assume that AVI and MPG file sizes can't be too different...

I'll try keeping the video type to its original if TCPMP will play it anyway. Plus, the quality of the video always detoriate whenever you encode.
A random question- In your sig, I notice you are endorsing 'mini opera'. I was wondering which out of 'mini opera' or 'mobile opera' is the better for a kaiser
For web browser's, you're probably better off reading this thread. The reason I use Opera Mini, is because I enjoy the zoom ability that you get. I.E when you open a webpage, you see all the webpage, then you can just press on the bit you want to zoom into. But the minute Opera Mobile 9 comes out, I'll be getting it . That Skyfire that's made an appearance also seems to look VERY interesting, probably going to be a good competitor for Opera Mobile 9, as is Microsoft's Deepfish browser. It's all very exciting.... lol.
Hello. I am considering to buy an HTC p4350. So I was wondering if Herald can play full screen unconverted (as it was downloaded) divx movies?
TCPMP player shoould be able to play it. The performance depends on resolution and bitrate. OMAP CPUs (like herald has) have severe problems with any movies in higher resolution than native 320*240, so don§t even think of playing CD movies.
The conversion is with right software (I can reccomend Spb Mobile DVD) a mater of several mouseclicks. It easily turns any DVD, avi or mpeg your PC can read into PPC-friendly 320*240 xvid (or 640*480 if you have vga machine)
you can also use pocketdivx it is freeware and then tcpmp to watch

I used to have an Siemens SX1 so I always reencoded my divx movies (700 mb but I do not know the res.) in to small movies which SX1 could easily play. But I am tired of converting them. Since I am going to have a huge (2 or 4 gb) sd card then I thought I could forget about that converting trouble. I guess I was wrong?
On a 2gb card you can only put 1 and 1/2 movie (unless you download crappy quality movies) so converting is something you should do anyway.
Some movies are only 150 MB then
As I said, it is matter of 4 or 5 clicks to convert the movie. It used to be trouble back when the only tool we had was virtualDub, but nowadays there is a bunch of specialized softwarers, so it i really an easy task.
You are talking like it does not take any time to convert. Yes Just a few clicks but what about the waiting for the process to finish?

It's not even necessary to convert during the night; depending on the size of the original file with pocketdivx you can convert a 700MB DivX movies within a few minutes (5) into a 320*240 ppcmovie

What about transfering files to the pda? Do I have to use Activesync or cardreader/bt? Can Herald be connected as a usb mass storage device?
with wm5torage you can acces xda as masstorage - but usb1.1 only.
so with adapter and cardreader it is much faster...

You may note that some movies may be able to run absolutely fine in their native format by just overclocking it to 247/260Mhz. I do this several times with some 700MB/1.2GB movies, which are of high bitrate

streaming DivX
I was wandering if there is any way someone might know how to play streaming DivX and/or macromedia files. Here is a link to a page that I am unable to play (have flash bundle and TCPMP Player installed).

I find that a temporary overclock to 286 while watching high resolution video files does the trick, also if you are using tcpmp sometimes the video will not appear until you press fullscreen mode.

Hmmmm. All 700MB divx movies I've "acquired" only take up about 200 megs after reencoding with dr. divx. And the quality's flawless. In fact, right now I have the first seasons of the simpsons and family guy, as well as harold and kumar go to white castle all on a 2 gig card.

I know, bad video performance is a known issue (see http://www.htcclassaction.org/).
But on my device I'm not able to play any video file without bucking image. About every second, the image stops for a short instance (I get sick watching this for more than a minute )
I tried different video files with different formats:
- wmv8 with 300 kbp/s, 25 images/s, 320 x 240 with wma8 128 kbit/s stereo (converted using All-in-1 mobile video convert)
- mpeg-4 (H.264)/AVC, between 128 and 1248 kbp/s 25 images/s, 320 x 240 and 64 to 128 kbp/s for stereo audio (converted with SUPER)
- a couple other files found on the web
I tried to play them with the installed Microsoft Media Player. Normally sound is ok, video never is. For the video it seems to make almost no difference what settings I use. mpeg-4 is a bit better than wma8. But between the 1248 kbp/s and the 128 kbp/s video there is no difference (besides th artifacts), It's bucking the same.
Can anyone please tell me, what codec / settings are playable on the HTC S730? Or can someone post an example video file that plays well on his device?

Window's media player is your problem in this case.
I have Core player and that TCPMP one posted above. If I drop resolution on some of my files I can play them perfectly in core player, and with TCPMP set to low (medium) all videos play fine. High action scenes sometimes cause a little studder so I am going to lower the origional res down a little bit.
The only problem I have run into is on some higher quality ones the phone runs out of page file memory which I currently have set to 1024 within TCPMP. Make sure your phone's memory is clear when trying to watch stuff and you should be just fine. Especially if you are dropping the resolution down that low.

Frame rate is not perfect yet. I still have to figure out what the best settings are, but it is already ways better than before.
Hehe, no problem. WMP is not a well optimized player. For my computer and HTPC I use zoom player, it can handle 720p on a processor that really shouldnt be able to.

After spending a lot of my spare time I finally found the right settings for converting videos for the HTC S730.
First I tried to convert videos to H.264/AVC and WM8. This does not produce anything you'd like to look at. Even with very low video bandwidth (200 kbit/s for video) the best I got was below 10 frames/s. With TCPMP it's a bit better than with Windows Media Player but there is no big difference.
But if works fine with the following settings:
Container : AVI
Video Codec: MPEG-4 480 kbit/s
Audio Codec: mp3 44.1 kHz stereo 128 kbit/s
For converting I use the free SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html).
This way I get close to 25 frames/s (maybe 10% are dropped).
Please note that such a video cannot be played with the Windows Media Player. (AVI is a Microsoft format, but it looks as the player doesn't like the codec.) However it plays fine on TCPMP 0.71 (from here: http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/)
My daily train rides are much more pleasant now

With my S710 (has a 200MHz TI OMAP850) I'm streaming 25fps/200kbs of my VLC server (which transcodes digital sat streams in real time). I'm using .ts container, mpeg1 vid, mp2 audio and Coreplayer as client.
I have an episode of Top Gear that I can play in TCMP at mediuam quality, its video rate is 199 / 25 fps.
WMP will only play the non tweeked files, in other words if it was compressed into any codec (xvid, divx, ogg, mkv) and other of the others WMP will not play it unless it has the codec installed. The other players (core player / TCMP) come able to read these files upon install so they work better.
With TCMP most of my files do not even have to be changed, just dump them on the sd card and with the player set to medium quality it goes right through them. Now some high action / motion scenes will cause a little lag or slow down but not much and not for long.
This is soooo ridiculous! WMP worked just fine in the older 200mhz devices! Now we have to switch to TCMP and make sure that no programs reside in memory before playing ANY videos? Ridiculous! HTC is losing a lot of faithful customers with this.
It depends on the type of file's your trying to play.
Just like WMP on the PC, it wont play anything without the codecs for them.
The galaxy tab manages to play back most videos, so converting is hardly ever needed. However, it doesn't seem to work with videos containing FLAC, DTS or OGG audio.
So anyway, i'm trying to find a way to batch convert files while copying over the video stream. Instead of wasting 10-15 minutes converting each video, each file could be done in less than a minute as only the audio would be converted.
Has anyone figured out a way to do this?
So far I've checked out Handbrake & MeGUI + a few more, but with no luck
Demux audio with YAMB, convert to 2ch aac, remux new audio with YAMB. Done in ~30 mins or less
Give Avidemux a try. can copy video, while recoding audio to differing container formats such as mkv,mp4, avi etc. Linux/Mac/BSD/Win versions available. I've used it frequently for converting the audio portions of files for playback on my xbox360.

Handbrake has a batch mode - just add the items to the queue by clicking "Add to Queue.
Don't know if you can set it to ignore any video processing - but with the queue how long it takes doesn't matter much, just let it run overnight with however many jobs you have.
Nevermind, I found a free program called Xmedia recode that does it very well
I think I have found something quite interesting I just got spotify and was wondering how to convert the music to my ipod mp3 format. I don't believe they use drm.
Expiriment:
I played one song only.
I recorded the cached files size after the song was played.
Output:
I got 4 files that were each 1.3 mb each. I also download a ogg version of the song I wanted in 160 kb/s (correct me if I'm wrong I don't know the right unit)
the size is 4x1.3 = 5.2 mb and the ogg version I downloaded from the internet was 5.2 mb.
I believe spotify splits up the files and then puts them back together somehow.

Well the easiest way must be to record the play-back from the Spotify program/client with Audacity(GNU/freeware). In Audacity choosing the Windows Stereo Mixer as source.
Then export the Audacity files in any format of your own liking.
For further tagging and then transfer to your MP3-player.
Though. having a Spotify Premium account and a Smatphone (Desire HD) as a music player.
Gives me several playlists with some 1000 songs to play streamed over Wifi or 3G, and some 200 song off-line.
As a bonus I can use the same account on my PC (Not at the same time but with the same playlists) for playing Spotify thru the Home stereo amplifier and floor standing speakers.
PS. the DHD/Spotify is my music player at home and away, have hardly touched my CD collection since I got Spotify, still seldom over 4GB/month.
but the problem is I have over 1000 songs already (US User). and no windows computers. If you have the premium account and have offline mode could you go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Spotify\Storage and get me the biggest file in there so i can test some more

Here's my Spotify files on my Android DHD at least.

Phone/sdcard/spotify2/username, Hold just a couple of MB
I didn't want to mess around in there but some hundreds sub-folders(00, 11 e1, fe etc)
If you got 1000 song to convert/pirate for your Ipod, you better get started.
Recorders for the Stereo Mixer(or what ever it's called for Linux and Mac)
you could try audacity like someone else suggested. or tunebite. it works in a similar way. basically, you record from the sound card but the soft cuts the audio files and adds tags to each of them so you get the full song in once piece. you can find a step by step description here in case you wanna give it a try. oh and does converting as well so if you need mp3 files, you're covered.
