Hi.
I am looking at purchasing my first HTC phone. My first thought is who to go with. As I am looking through the forums people generally don't seem to happy with what orange have done with the tytn 2. However vodafone customers seem quite happy with the v1615, apparently vodafone have not messed with the phone too much and it still remains close to the HTC release.
Do either vodafone or orange change the main screen with the options for weather etc.
If anyone has any further experience with this, It would be great to hear from you.
Thanks
Marc
I have the V1615, which is only lightly branded. The HTC Home plugin (with the weather etc) is disabled when you first get the phone, but can be easily re-enabled in the Today screen settings. Similarly you can swap the vodafone message and calendar icons for proper WM6 icons in the same settings page. It comes with a nasty Vodafone theme installed, but again you can swap that for something more standard.
The only other customisations I found were the dialling screen, and comms manager, which have cosmetic changes to fit with the Vodafone theme but are functionally identical to the HTC versions. It's also missing a couple of apps - namely Windows Live, Messenger, and Worldcard Mobile.
It's perfectly livable with, certainly compared to what I've seen of the Orange version... having said that, I did debrand mine in the end and switch to the stock HTC rom.
PS - from what I've read here and elsewhere the V1615 is actually sim unlocked, so open to any network, but I've not actually tried any other sim in mine.
The orange customisation is appalling... I flashed the phone with the shipped HTC generic ROM as soon as I got it home. Keep in mind that to do this you have to sim unlock the phone (currently no free solution, £20 or more depending on where you do it)
Also, the orange do not provide the TomTom taster than comes in the generic package.
HOWEVER... I have not seen the Voda TYTN II, but I say with certainty that the Orange TYTN (Hermes) looked much better than the Voda TYTN (Hermes).
Can anyone comment on the differences between how the Kaiser handsets differ visually?
EDIT: I just checked, the two variants look almost exactly the same
Just to jump in here too, I'm looking at getting the TyTN II on either Vodafone or T-Mobile, but can't decide which one to get
Just to add, the Voda V1615 did come with the TomTom taster on disk, along with Sprite backup etc - the same CD package as the HTC, afaik.

If this is true (and I've no reason to doubt it) then the Vodafone is definitely SIM unlocked. All I had to do with mine is use the free CID utility available here (which just "unlocks" the firmware itself) and then run the usual Rom Update Utility to flash it with the generic HTC version. Total cost = £0.00.

There are loads of threads with noobs who've flashed and then said AAAAHHHHHHHH WTF ha ha ha ha
I'm not exactly sure why the sim lock kicks in... legally I don't think it should because I have an orange SIM in an orange phone - I've just flashed it with a non-orange OS build.
I read in another thread that maybe the handset detects that you've got a radio stack of a non-orange build and prompts for SIM unlock code...
My UK v1615 is also unlocked. How cool is that?
I rather like the phone so far and visualy it's a very pretty phone with the brushed metal around the screen and the black glossy back. Very nice indeed.
Havent tried to debrand the ROM yet as i've found no reason to.
I have the V1615 from Vodafone and can confirm it is not sim locked none of the phonesi have ever had form Vodafone including my old TYTn were ever locked.
V1615 seems quite normal and has a very low amount of customisation, less than on most Vodafone phones.

What happens is, if you flash a new radio rom (that is not an orange rom) to an orange TYTN 2 then the phone complains about the sim card not being accepted.
The only current way around this is to pay £20+ (there is a member on here that will provide you with an unlock code) and unlock the phone.
Then you can carry on using the phone with none orange radio roms.
What people are currently doing (and sucessfully with out paying £20+ to unlock the phone) is flashing HardSPL and then flashing just the OS rom to their orange phones
Putting aside the Orange variants problem with simlock (which can be solved relatively cheaply) I would have said the argument is which carrier provides you the best deal, not just on the phone but the airtime package, network coverage etc.
At the end of the day, the device is the same and you can flash any of the ROMs found here and customise your shiny device any way you want
To be clear on the Orange simlock issue - this only occurs if you flash a different radio rom, flashing an OS only rom has no issues at all. Currently there is no need to use a different radio rom with the cooked rom's available here.
I have reflashed the ROM on my TyTN II to the HTC Windows 6.1 version downloaded from their site. Everything works OK, except the phone will not accept incoming calls and i am unable to make calls out. Since this the unit has been reflashed with approx 5 different ROM's from Duttys Series (Which i had on when i purchased the unit) but it still has the same issue. It has also now had a different radio version put on and the SPL reflashed. Even after all this it still says no to incoming or outgoing calls. The strange thing is, that it does register on Vodafones network and i get a full signal, but no 3G. The unit is not locked as i have run an unlocker on it as well. I can send text messages OK.
Please can anyone help me with this problem, i am completley out of ideas and unable to use my phone.
Cheers.
Is the Camera working? I know that the tilt has many radios, could it be that you just need to try more of them?
Yes the camera worksfine.
I have tried a few different radios but knowing which one is the correct one is going to be tricky.
Do you know where i can get more of these?
Thanks
Have you tried disabling 3G (force GSM)?
Unfortunatley 3G dosen't seem to be available anyway. (Don'tknow if this is compunding the problem).
I have tried it on GSM but still no luck.
Don't know if the ROM info below will help:
R 1.58.16.27
G 25.61.30.03H
D 3.14.00.00
I have spoken to HTC and they said i need to send it for repair, but i would rather sort it myself. They wont even tell me if it is in warranty!!

well to be honest with you, that radio you are using won't work with the rom available on HTC website. Just saying.
I thought the rom they provide is accompanied with a radio?
try 1.65.20.29 or 1.65.16.25 or 1.65.17.56
Thanks.
I will give them a go.
also after you flash the radio and you do not have any service go into comm manager and make sure airplane mode is off.
You may want to upgrade your hardspl version as well to 3.28, 3.29, or 3.56
Good luck
OK, next, and probably final, installment.
Have tried flashing to a hard SPL and changing the ROM and Radio to various versions but it still fails.
I have now flashed it back to stock HTC settings as shown below:
ROM 3.28.405.0 WWE
Radio 1.65.17.56
Protocol 25.83.40.02H
Soft SPL 3.28.0000
I have checked the CID and it is a Super CID (all zero's).
I have tried the radios you guys recommended but all in vain.
I have also tried another providers SIM (O2), and the unit would not find the network and register.
I have spoken to Vodafone UK and they say my unit is not barred or blocked in any way (My SIM works in other phones).
I believe i have now come to the end of what i can try.
Does anyone have any other ideas before i turn my TyTN II into a very expensive paper weight.
Thanks.
That radio isn't stock.
You should not be attempting to flash anything without hardspl installed. But you must have hardspl installed if you purchased it with dutty's rom already on it.
Hold down camera button and insert stylus at the same time then report back with what it states on the tri color screen.
On the tr colour screen it reports:
KAIS130
SPL-3.28.0000
CPLD-8
Does anyone know if the information supplied below is correct, as i am still having major issues.
On the tri colour screen it reports:
KAIS130
SPL-3.28.0000
CPLD-8
Thanks
OK, i have taken some advice and flashed a HardSPL to the unit.
Since then i have flashed a couple of Duttys ROM's (The unit came with Dutty's) but it's still not able to make or recieve calls.
I think i should try and send it back to HTC for them to have a look.
Does anyone have any experience with HTC?
Thanks
Exactly which of Dutty's ROMs are you running now? And what radio version have you flashed? If you have a ROM/Radio combo that are compatible with each other and still cannot make calls, then it looks like you will need to send the phone in for service.
Before sending the phone in, be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Reverting SPL for Warranty thread prior to shipping it. HTC will check your SPL and ROM version, and if they are not OEM standards, you will be charged for the repair and lose the remainder of your warranty.
Thanks for all your help NotATreoFan.
The unit has been repaired by HTC under warranty. They have repalced the main board in the unit, and it now works fine.
Thanks

Yes send it back to HTCs repair centre under warranty and tell them the problem either wasn't fixed properly the first time or has reocurred. You also need to ensure your network provider has provided you with the correct sim for a Kaiser (although you say it's a Tilt which is AT&T your icon shows vodafone so for them it'll be the same sim as for their V1615).
I got the same error today... but it works again now.
I dont realy know what append.
First I tried it in another phone Ok on that phone, not on the HTC TyTN2
second I tried on HTC P3600 it is ok,
Third retry on the HTC Tytn2 it worked well.!!!
The Htc Tytn2 is under WM6.1 (upgraded from WM 6.0)
When the issue occured, during the boot, I got the message to start in safe mode may be there was somthing wrong with one driver.
when I got it running with the sim the HTC didn't ask any more to start in safe mode... let you investigate.... good luck

I'm confused as to what you actually have there is it
A) A Tilt (ie the US Version of a Kaiser with bloatware but no VGA Camera) which is used on AT&Ts network
B) A 'genric' ie HTC branded TyTN II
C) A Tilt but you've never activated it and instead unlocked it/modified it to use a Vodafone sim on it or
D) None of the above (in which case what is your arrangement)?
Anyone who has a Tilt but unlocks it to use another providers sim in it (without getting the unlock code from AT&T to do it officially - or putting it back to stock condition before reporting a problem) will probably run into warranty problems I'd imagine - I hope this isn't you
it is a at&t from usa. For unlocking sim as many others did when they need to replace their mobile was to put in back original software so should not be a problem. What if i get at&t sim card and number will at&t consider me as their client a replace my tilt under warranty !
This happened to me! I was taking a nap and I woke up wondering why I hadn't received a call, and there was the emergency call only screen. I turned off my phone and then took the SIM card out, put it back in, and booted it up. It did the same thing, but I turned it off and turned it back on and it was fine. I hope it doesn't happen anymore, I was scared. Good luck getting yours back! That's the only problem I've had with my Tilt, minus the not having 3G or Edge service where I go to college.. even though it's on the highest hill in town. and I'm supposed to have service. hmm.
I got me a Touch Diamond in the rounder shape of the T-Mobile MDA Compact IV. It came in a sealed box from eBay and I've used unlocking software that I also found on eBay. As it turns out, this software seems to originate from this forum.
As far as I've researched it, right after the lock was removed, the phone started sending SMS messages to the number SMS032837 each time it is reset (since I've never used this phone locked it *could* have done this already, but I doubt it). Even if I switch off the GSM radio, and then reset, the phone waits for the radio to come back on and immedately sends a message.
I have no clue to what's the message is about or whoever is the recipiant but that's not the main issue here; it should not do this, period.
ROM: 1.37.110.3
Radio: 1.20.OliNex
Protocol: 52.26a.25.09U
Anyone any idea what is going on?
TIA,
XDArjen
sorry i dont have any idea
try this steps
1-try hard reset
if not work
2- you have an old ROM so
upgrade it to the latest ROM for your country or use cooked ROM if you want
Could a program similar to RemoteTracker be installed on your Diamond ?
That would explain the SMS, as the software detects that you changed the SIM card.
yea sounds like some program like remotetracker, try flashing a new ROM, as i assume it's build into the ROM by the seller, no idea why though.

Hi,
I`ve got MDA Compact IV on T-Mobile UK with original ROM and Radio (I just need to) and I`ve noticed that after every re-boot it sends above mentioned by you text.
Actually, it sends 2 texts: 1st to 32837 (on the on-line bill it`s clasified as
"unbranded" and it`s free of any charge)
2nd to 100203005 (clasified as "SMS text messaging" and it is also free).
I was surprised as well, so started to investigate.
I`ve found that above texts got something to do with W`n Walk service and T-Mobile My Faves and they are like a system messages.
They are NOT using any of the tariff allowances and they are completely free.
I`m sure because I`m checking my bill very carefully every month and it is my 3rd bill since I started using Compact IV.
I think that every HTC Diamond and MDA Compact IV sends those texts when logging into GSM Networks, but not every network provider shows them on their bills. With T-Mobile it shows on My T-Mobile On-Line account, but not on any paper or electronic bill.
There is more info about the case on other forums, just "google" them numbers and you will find it.
So, DON`T PANIC, everything is in order.
P.S.
My handset is unlocked and I was using foreign SIM card with, whilst on holiday and I haven`t noticed any extra charges for above texts, nor any other problem.
Regards.

Hey snark_be,
I'm not sure, it's a brand new T-Mobile that I got in a sealed box. The owner got it as an upgrade but didn't want it. So it came locked to T-Mobile and I had to unlock it since I'm not a T-Mobile customer.
Could T-Mobile be using this tracking method? The seller of the unlocker could have added it, I don't know, he hasn't answered my email (yet).
The SMS goes anytime the device boots, not just after inserting the SIM.
HTC ROM upgrade site rejects my serial number if I want to download a new ROM.

That was the plan, but that seem's a bit of a hornet's nest. Can I assume safely that the T-Mobile is a true HTC Touch Diamond? Will I be able to return to non-brick if something doesn't work? I mean when I install Hard-SPL first (it's installed already by the unlocker, but an older version, like 1.24)?

Tom, they show up on my bill, so I have to pay for them. And my provider logs them as International calls.
I don't have the luxury of sitting idle because it make the device useless as a phone. I will peruse the forum about this matter but I was already planning upgrading the ROM as I find the device very unresponsive.
have a look in the rom section here and install a new one

Just flash the latest HardSPL, 1.93 I think, and then head over to the Diamond Wiki and download/flash the newest WWE ROM you find (1.94 I think).
Hi Guys,
I am tried to use an O2 sim in my Diamond.
Message came up along the lines of network locked. I am currently using Dutty's 3.6 rom.
I would have thought flashing the phone would unlock it to all networks.??
Help ASAP.
Thanks.
nope, you need to network unlock, this completely different! just search the forum
The service offered by Olipro is worth considering and is very cheap.
