I going to buy a new game console for my son's birthday. He wants a 360, but when I looked at the PS3, it seems to be a better buy.
There are several "cons" about the 360 that make me think the PS3 is a better buy.
No built in power supply
No HD movie support (Blu Ray)
No built in wireless
You have to pay for online gaming?
Ring of death?
Noisy operation?
No bluetooth (but do you need it?)
Are just some things that make me question purchasing it over a PS3.
This old fart needs some young gamers advise.
Why don't you just buy him a new high tech computer? It's much better and the games that are for xbox are mostly also for PC and you can play and connect to xbox players via windows live or something like that. I saw in gizmodo lol. But A computer is a much better buy. But from what you say,
Xbox 360:
Better gaming
Better controls
Better online play
PS3:
Better graphics
Tilt control (no one really uses it lol)
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Can fit a regualar drive into it
PC:
ALL OF THE ABOVE
I got him a laptop 2 birthdays ago, but I doubt it has the horse power to run any games he wants.
I think his motivation for a XBox is the game Halo. He has several friends playing that game.

PS3 has a brighter future then 360 and in about a year will be the dominating system
Take it from me I have all 3 current system and I play my ps3 90% of the time
I have all three and use the PS3 about 85% of the time. I even let my xbox live run out bc I just dont use it much anymore. I have started to play the WII a little more. Plus blue rays are awesome on my 47 and 63 inch 1080p tvs!

To get a PC that would be on par with the PS3 or even the 360 would be very expensive, much more that either console costs.
The games argument is a bit out dated. True exclusives are becoming more and more rare, most are just temporary. The 360 got FFXII and PS3 is getting Bioshock, though some titles won't move like Halo and Metal Gear.
On the hardware side, the PS3 can do more (bluray, linux, web browser, bluetooh, wi-fi) out of the box without hacking or other accessories.
For online play, the 360 has more people that play online. It's been building that user base for two console generations. The PS3 is just getting started with that.
I have a PS3, have one friend with a 360 and another with both. In the end it comes down to what you want to do with the console. If your son has a lot of friends with 360s that play each other a lot, he may feel left out with a PS3 if he likes to play online too. I've never been much interested in online gaming (it's not usually a friendly environment to a more casual player), so it doesn't bother me that I'm left out. My console can do more anyway

I must argue that point. I've built a great PC for about $500. 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD, dvd-rw, custom led case. It's not that difficult. But my point still stands. The xbox 360 is superior in every way for online gaming. I would only get the PS3 if you're interested in titles such as MGS (Metal Gear Solid). But I also prefer the Wii. That's always a creative choice. And now it's getting even better with MotionPlus coming out.
i have both the elite and ps3. For Online experience I would say has to be elite at the moment value for money has be ps3 blu-ray, bluetooth, online free etc. Ps3 has the potential to be a much better games console then the xbox whether this potential is relised that is another matter.
i have always been a sony, always n nvr wanted/hated microsoft, but no one has a ps3, and the ONLY thing better is the graphics LATER on cuz sony announced that their games r yet to its fullest potential but, again no one has a ps3, the gameplay is so much better, ill just wait for ps4 and get that and its soooooooooooo much cheaper, i thnk the fixed the ring of death, on later versions and now wit the nexflx buy and different packages just get the 360, i love my ps3 but i dont play it much, only for the graphics and its also used for blu ray so i use for that also, and im sure he will want it just in time for Gears of war 2 and UFC undisputed
The more I look into this, the more it's looking like my son is getting a Xbox......... and I'm getting a PS3.

Awesome! Be sure to come back and post your PSN ID!
the PS3 is simply a better system known world wide. u have already named a couple of the better features urself. the XBox 360 has NOTHING better than the PS3. it also has NOTHING that the PS3 doesnt already have. and it simply doesnt have some of the things that the PS3 has also. lets start with the grafix. to be honest... they arent really worth comparing but i have owned them both and i have sold my XBox 360 because i was in so much of a rush to get rid of the crappy system. ive owned both the same titles on XBox and PS3 and noticed that the PS3 games looked way better and into detail. u have to purchase the wireless XBox controller.... all of the PS3 controllers are wireless. the XBox has a bulky wired head set for their internet chat... while with the PS3 (since it has built-in bluetooth technology) u can use the same small bluetooth headset that u would use with ur phone ON THE GAME CONSOLE. how convenient and universal the PS3 makes ur wireless headset. oh i forgot.... the XBox has a wireless headset also.... but u cant pair it to ur phone, HA . as for online gaming. who can really compare the online gaming??? thats so false what the guy on the first page said. the online gaming performance ALWAYS depends on ur broadband connection, not the console itself. so the online gaming is completely the same. BUT!!!!! XBox u have to pay monthly.... sony made theirs free of charge to have fun. the built-in SixAxis is a really cool feature in the PS3 controller if u do choose to use it. i myself use it very little, but it is still a nice feature to have. its xtremely fun and makes u feel more into the game if u ask me. just like the Nintendo Wii. the XBox does non of this. the XBox has no built-in cooler and the system runs VERY HOT!! run it too long..... and its gone! trust me. i've owned 3 of the peices of crap and its true. u have to buy and external system cooler and it still doesnt work cuz my second XBox over heated too... and once again, i was introduce (FOR THE SECOND TIME) to the "Red Rings OF Death". and the XBox doesnt have to over heat to give you the "Rings OF Death". just simply try to turn it on one day and u will see them... TAA DAAA lol. u have to turn it on and off about 30 times to finally get it to come on. that IF u didnt already over heat it. cuz then its GONE COMPLETELY. the PS3 always turns on. ALWAYS without a problem. remember this popular slogan? well this time lets point it toward the "Ring OF Death"...... "ONLY ON THE XBOX 360" lmao. trust me bro. i dont think anyone else can tell u any better. ive owned them BOTH and the PS3 is just way better. everyone knows. even those people that try to lie and say the PS3 is worse. even they know the PS3 is better. numbers never lie so take a look for urself at the console sales. the Nintendo Wii sold the most.... PS3 sold alot right underneath it..... the XBox sold not even 1 Forth compared to both consoles. everyone knows it for its bad rep. and now that bill gates retired and the head guy for it games is gone too...... what future do they have now??? and look at it this way man. if all the other reasons are not good enuff... the PS3 is STILL THE CHEAPEST BLUE-RAY DVD PLAYER U WILL EVER FIND! simple as that. enuff said yet?? sorry for the long post. just wanted to point u in the right direction. u get what u pay for. dont buy something that not going to last, let alone entertain you.

here we go again with the "nobody owns a PS3" talk again...... omg lol. when u go online to play a game and u enter a room to play. its always full. xbox is always full too. alot of people play online. so how can u compare that system to that other garbage system THAT HAD TO COME OUT WITH AN ELITE VERSION to fix only SOME OF ITS MAJOR BUG ISSUES. man that 360 is wack. just telling the truth and keeping it honest. besides.... u say nobody owns a PS3???? numbers never lie man.... numbers never lie. nobody has a 360 if u ask me. i remember when it first came out. nobody lined up outside with lines wrapped about the building, waiting for them to open so they could buy one. and i remember everywhere i went, they always had them on shelves trying to sell them. on the other hand.... it was very difficult to get my hands on a PS3. mann........ that thing sold like CANNED P*SSY.... u thought i was gone say hot cakes huh. hhaahaha

PS3 did not dominate when it first came out...no one bought it due to its price
Now with the pricedrop and expansion of games, PS3 is the dominating system
I have owned both so here is my take on it:-
No built in power supply - a pain as its big and needs to be kept cool
No HD movie support (Blu Ray) - will be an issue in a few years
No built in wireless - means you need to keep it near to a socket - pain
You have to pay for online gaming? - con as ps3 is free
Ring of death? - yep it will happen to you as everyone i know has had it. Mine went after 1 year and it was a real pain to send back and get repaired but MS did fix it for free it around in 2 weeks. They replaced the motherboard and the CD drive as that was also going wrong. Very Poor for a year old machine.
This was the reason I traded it in for a Wii once MS sent it back
Noisy operation? YES IT IS NOISY compared to the wisper of a PS3
No bluetooth (but do you need it?) No use for it except controllers
PS3 now has plenty of good cheap and 2nd hand games, IMO it looks better, controllers have built in battery that last much longer, itssilent, blu ray, wifi, free online. PS3 wins.
I have both and I use my Xbox for gaming and the ps3 for watching movies. Come this fall you'll be able to save xbox games to harddrive so youll have faster load times and it lifts the limitation on the dvd storage, im sure sony will eventually follow suit. Of course xbox live isnt free but it has less lag than the ps3. But id see which system more of his friends has bc he will get more out of it(i.e playing online and borrowing games).

As far as the Games on HDD goes, if your 360 is modded you can already do that.
A majority of games for PS3 write large amounts of Data when you first load the game to the HDD giving it much faster access
ONLY DOWNFALL OF PS3 - IT WILL NEVER BE MODDED!!!! Many have tried, none have succeeded. Sony seems to have learned from the PSP
i played this on a friends iphone and instantly got addicted.
would appriciate a link if such a game exists.
thanks in advance

This the game where youhave flights coming in from different directions on the screen and you have to navigate them to a landing stirp or off the screen? (hazy memory, sorry!).
If so then I've definitely played it on either a touch Pro or the Xperia, so I'm sure it's available somewhere... god knows where I found it though.

Probably for a long long time. Unlike Android, the iPhone OS is a single-device platform. When a game developer can expect its software to run only on a single device, its a lot easier to optimize and tailor the code. As for Android, there are three major shortcomings when it comes to games:
1. Android has a smaller marketshare. Making a high quality game takes a sizeable staff of not just programmers but artists, sound recorders, marketing, etc. Most companies are going to do what's best for their bottom line: invest in the platform that has the highest potential for return and then recycle that codebase onto other platforms where possible.
2. Android apps (for the most part) are interpreted VM apps. Interpreted languages without JIT compilers tend to run a lot slower than a native or a JIT interpreted app. Combine this with the fact that the first crop of Android devices are just inherently slower/lower specced than iPhone hardware.
3. Android is a device-agnostic platform. Meaning it can theoretically go on anything from a toaster to a x86 netbook. Even if a developer only targeted mass market Android phone devices, you're still talking about a very large spread between low end and high end hardware. The kind of games that run well on both low and high end hardware tend to be-- yup, card and puzzle games.
Although since Android is open source, the possibility for it to be customized into a gaming-phone platform could break it out of this mold. Basically, some company could take the core Android OS and then build their own single-device platform on top of that. Anyone who comes from the PalmOS world will know exactly what im saying when I say Tapwave Zodiac.
Anyway, I know you said you didn't want to hear this, and as a staunch Apple-hater it pains me to say it myself, but you should probably just get an iPhone if phone gaming is that important to you.
I'm happy with my SNES, NES and Genesis emulators. Got over 700 games for all of them on my SD Card.
What's an iPhone?
so apps is what you want
actully i dont know if this will make people happy or not but if you google on your desktop andriod games apks. you can down load them for free and use astro to install on phone games like midnight pool bowling asphalt 3 racing gutiar hero etc. i have a couple but thats just a way.... right or wrong...

1. Yeah, sad but true
2. Yet another "WTF were they thinking?"
Now about it being able to run on low and high spec'd hardware, that sounds a bit liiiiiiikkeeeeeee......... computers. There's low specs, high specs, yet the gaming market for pc is doing fine since for the most part people who want to game buy gaming rigs, I don't see how this can't apply to the mobile world (laptops are pretty mobile that's kinda close). But yeah, google really mashed android up regardless
Gaming's not important enough to me to get an iAnything, I'm also saddened by the lack of <INMYOPINION> other apps, every time I check the market there's 50 new fart apps or HOT LADIEZ bull and you figure people would learn by now not everyone has a low enough IQ to appreciate that crap
I just don't see why we've gotta wait so long, it's not like android is the first phone to do this stuff, and it's not like it's really a new platform, but I guess it is a jumbled mess of an already jumbled mess which really put a dent in my already dented trust sheild for google

I've got a friend with an iphone who's been coding for like 14 years, and has a six figure income thanks to it. I've almost convinced him to switch to android, since he hates the iphone and apple anyway. If anyone has any good links for android development, post 'em, and then wait because he's currently in the process of moving and I'm currently trying to stop my hands from going numb (oh the joys of growing old, my b-day's july 25th, I'll be 22 this year!) we plan on giving android a go anyway

Better is too broad a stroke. It has strengths and weaknesses, just like every smartphone operating system out there. Even winmo has many notable positive aspects (none relating to usability, unfortunately).
You should really give those tic-tac keyboards a try. They might seem like a joke at first but i've seen folks really pound away at them. The key is that they are small enough so you don't have to move your thumbs very far to get to a key, which should mean faster typing. But the key shape and travel has to be well designed so you don't accidentally press two or three keys at once.
Don't count anything out until you've tried it.

i dont think ne good games with awsome graphics are coming out ne time soon maybe with a new android device just like they did with the iphone 3g to the iphone 3gs
Guyz... if you have not tried this game, you should. I highly recommend this. After playing this game on my HD7, it made me realize how amazing this WP7 OS is.
It actually gave me jitters. The Soft D-Pad and action controls that comes up on the screen are so sensitive and intuitive, you would not even feel the lack of hardware controls.
And the Graphics rendering with 3D is just MIND BLOWING.
Folks who do not own a WP7 device don't even have a clue what they are missing.
MS took their OS to the NEXT LEVEL. I'm a very happy camper.
yeah me too.. considering hd7 doesnt have dedicated gpu right? but the game graphics is quite good.

I'm sure the 'liking' part is subjective. Though I cannot comment on the game on the iPhone, since I never had the device, I was very impressed with the game on my HD7. I did play the game on Xbox and it had all the aspects of the game on the console.
Sorry for the language but at least we've got the video

Hmm it does seem it would be much more enjoyable on the HD7's rather large screen.
Its kind a port over from the iphone... i had it on my ipod touch so its kinda similliar..
but still a good game although I thought the apple one was slightly better than this one.
But then kudos for MS they are getting there atlast
Wow. What an experience. I just DL Assasins Creed, and I was blown away. This is not your normal smartphone, this device hands down is next generation. Be patient people- you are holding a Gem.

You guys should check out Rage HD on the iPhone or Epic Citadel. Prepare to be amazed.
I hope you're not implying that games of that quality won't come to WP7 soon. That's pretty idiotic, given how developers already do love XNA and Microsoft's development environment in general. It's been two weeks since the US launch. Give it some time. 3000~ apps in the Marketplace, obviously some crap (Just like in EVERY other marketplace) but browse around and there are some true gems. So I'm sure almost all of you were dying to try out some of these Xbox Live games MS has been boasting about for months. And now that we have them a seclection of launch titles at our fingertips I'm curious what everyone besides me thinks of them so far?
I personally downloaded each one as a trial first to get a sense of how the presentation of these games were, how responsive and intuitive the controls were and if they were really worth the $5-7 price tag.
In the end I removed a few and kept a handful which I felt were my best choices overall.
I selected my top choices as:
- de Blob Revolution
- Flight Control
- Max & The Magic Marker
- MONOPOLY
- Need for Speed Underground
- Rocket Riot
- The Harvest
- Twin Blades
- Unite (best free game)
Now I will say some of the games appear to be just ports from other phones, some appear to have slightly improved graphics while some seem the same as their HD2 version (Monopoly & Sims 3). I found the best looking games in the marketplace to be de Blob Revolution, Max & The Magic Marker and Rocket Riot. Twin Blades is great too but looks a little dull almost as if it's not meant to be played at 480x800.
What do you all think so far? Do you think the early batch of released games is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the quality of games we'll be seeing or do you all think we're seeing the full potential of what it's capable of?
I am in no ways a fan on the iPhone but will say that in comparison of quality of games on the iOS they have some pretty ridiculous games. If anyone has seen the build quality of Rage HD on iPhone it makes me cross my fingers that WP7 is capable of the same if not better.
However I've seen screen shots and footage of the upcoming game Ilomilo and it looks like it should show some better potential for much better looking games.
I wish they would make monopoly free.
However, with Xbox Live coming to our smartphones now, the possibilities are endless, especially with WP7. So I think games like Assassins Creed and Need for Speed make other platforms look so outdated.
In recent news, I heard Google Android is getting a bit intimidated by the WP7 update coming in January.
WP7 FOR LYFE!!!!!
WE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Multiplayer support, MS needs it now. I am not asking for anything real time but games like UNO or Monopoly should at least have turn by turn multiplayer. I feel that a platform based on XBOX Live should at the minimum have turn by turn.
I agree with you both. Other OS's are looking outdated (except for the iOS).. However I'm hoping that WP7 will be able to compete soon with the visual quality of iOS games. I don't know if it's hardware limitations that's holding WP7 back on this one but they need to step it up to truly compete.
And yes MS does need to impliment true XBOX Live multiplayer into their games ASAP. I recalled the iOS having some games that you could actually play multiplayer via bluetooth I believe. I mean if you can do it on the PSP you should be able to do it here. Local multiplayer via wi-fi, turn based on the same device is mandatory, and even some other kind of true Xbox Live experience is a must.

Well it is currently their claim to fame, I would at least like to see it used. As far as visual quality check out ilomilo. These phones can pump out some nice graphics but its up to us to make this platform successful enough to pull in these developers.
I believe most of these developers already recognize the ease of use as far as developing games and apps for wp7. In a recent article, developers voiced out about wp7's flexibility and how using VB has made it very easy for them to build and deploy apps.
And BTW, there are compatibility issues using VB 2010 for development. You have the option to build your own app.
I love oregon trail

Maybe it's not available in your region. I'm in Canada and it's one of the 1st games that show up in the Xbox Marketplace.
Other OS look outdated? Android has the same assassins creed HD and has for months and has a beta port of rage HD up that easily rivals iOS. I have an HD7 and love the phone and cant wait for it to evolve in terms of games but if you think this is top-o-the line stuff then you're in for a pleasant suprise when they decide to catch up

Interesting, didn't know they had Rage HD for Android or that it was capable of a game like that..
strictly beta for the time being but I've seen it played on a captivate firsthand and its epic... In all actuality theres a few android phones that just kick the iphones hardware in the teeth. Itards just wont admit that we got something better at a lower price...

Yeah, i am in the US.
I just type in Oregon trail and it shows up.
Isn't it true that some American Apps dont show up in other regions(kind of like how some Apps for Android only work for US support)

True it is Just like AT&T users get a free download of that great looking game Ilomilo and it only shows up in their marketplace but if others look for it there's nothing there.
I think there's a way to trick your phone and change regions to access apps from other countries by changing the country under Settings then Region and Language. But I could be wrong..

I hear you on Ilomilo, I remembering emailing the devs before launch and asking them whether the app was going to be exclusive to at&t phones only or time exclusive and was told no. Then a few days later their site says its a timed exclusive. I was pretty peed off, he was nice about it and said he didn't know until last minute. Such a lovely game though.
