Ex2 Partitioner? - G1 Apps and Games

Just got a new 8GB card, need to partition it into Ex2 and FAT32, but don't have a program. Any recommendations? I need something free, I already tried Paragon but it kept asking me to pay. I want to put apps on my SD Card

I think EASEUS Partition Manager lets you create partitions (Not 100% sure, i have windows XP and used a differend method to make my partition)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500387

The link above for SDSplit is definitely the easiest way.
You can do it with the Trial version of Paragon as well.

you could get an ubuntu live CD and use the partitioner on there. download the .iso and burn it to a disk to try it out

I tried the script, fried my memory card and phone, but they are back up and working after several wipes, backups and formats. I tried EASEUS, it doesnt allow me to partition the MicroSD card, only my harddrive. Paragon.. I downloaded ALL the trial versions of their partitioner, NONE of them allows me to create the Ex2 partition, it asks me to buy the product as the feature is unable in the demo version. As for the Ubuntu CD... I think that may be a bit complicated for me, I can burn the ISO but it is a lot of work and if there is an easier way, obviously I would prefer that haha

If you have a computer running Windows XP, you could try this way. (This is how I made my partition)

Actually if you install it through its windows installer(wubi) it's pretty easy. Just put the cd in in windows and choose install in windows. After it's done you restart your computer and ubuntu is there as an option, you just choose it and it finishes installing and bam you have both windows and ubuntu. Alternatively, if you put in the cd and restart your computer you can have it start directly into ubuntu and have it run off the cd and run the partitioner from there. That way you don't have to install anything and it's a really easy interface.

With Ubuntu and Linux Mint (which I think looks nicer) you don't have to touch your hard drive to use it to re-partition your card.
Just burn the disc, reboot into it, open up the "runner" with Alt+F2 and type "gksu gparted." It's pretty simple from that point on.

Might want to try this if u dont want to dual boot an os, or run a live cd. =]

That's a good idea, provided that stripped-down Ubuntu actually has gparted installed.

Even if it doesn't, it probably(I'd almost bet money on it) has synaptic, in which case you can just install gparted through that. Even if by some weird happening it doesn't have synaptic you could use apt-get to download it.

Very true. But remember the OP isn't a Linux user and was a little bothered by even having to burn a CD. I still think, though, that a bootable CD that doesn't touch his hard drive is the simplest, best solution for him.

I see a lot of people (on random parts of the dream section of the forums) saying Paragon can not do it. The problem is you are getting / being reccomended the wrong product from paragon. If you can find partition manager 9, supposedly that can do it (hearsay as i didn't try myself). However, the site doesn't have 9. Version 10 is the latest so that's what they have available and that demo does not allow it.
However, if you get Paragon HD Manage Suite, you will be able to create the partitions.
Just wanted to throw this out there as I am seeing this mistake / confusion all over the various dream forums (at xda and other places as well)
I presume this is the root (no pun) of everyones partitioning headaches
Paragon HD Manager Suite 10, not Paragon Partition Manager 10

Alright you guys, thanks, I got it! I downloaded Paragon Partition 9 and it was actually... a lot better than I thought. My SD cards all partitioned and apps are on it after around 5 wipes from messing up, but its all good now.
Thanks!

What's strange is gparted used to be included, but lately it seems they've been leaving it off. I had to fetch it on a fresh 8.10 install. I wonder what that says about what Canonical thinks about Ubuntu's target audience.

Canonical tells you what their target audience is: normal people...who probably wouldn't ever need to partition a drive after installation. Ubuntu itself, along with it's Gnome environment have been constantly oversimplifying things since version 2 (of Gnome). They want to the the Linux version of Mac OS 8.
That's the reason I suggested using a Linux Mint CD. It comes with codecs and utilities like gparted pre-installed on the live CD.
That having been said, I'm glad the OP got his problem sorted out.

Probably the millionth A2SD thread, sorry

Hello. I've had my g1 for a while now and have learned almost everything there is to update, edit, and mess with the g1.
Problem is I never had a good memory card so I never learned anything related to Apps 2 SD. Now I have one lol.
So I got my 8gb class 6 card today and was really excited to update to the newest JACHero rom, which I had been running previously. Problem is, I can't seem to create the EXT3 partition correctly.
I've searched over XDA for guides and have used two, which haven't helped me.
I use Paragon, format the card and try to add a 600 mb ext3 partition. When everything is formatting, adding, etc, I eventually get a message telling me to restart my computer (the guide told me this would happen). So I keep going and restart the computer, but on boot, when its supposed to finish the thing, it seems like it finished, saying some error.
Now I got back to my desktop and see that in Paragon, I have the two partitions. I'm sure the fat32 is working fine, but it also shows the ext3 partition, so I thought it was ok. When I update my phone though, I end up in a boot loop, so I'm pretty sure the problem is with the SD card being incorrectly formatted.
Sorry for making a stupid post like this, but I'm getting kinda tired and annoyed lol. Thanks for any help you can offer!
The only thing I can think is downloading Cyan's 1.3.1 recovery and run the "fix etx3 file extensions" command. If that fails run it twice. After fixing the ext3 extensions re-flash and see if that helps.
what i suggest doing is using sdsplit (can be found with a small search) to ext2 then going into console in recovery and typing upgrade_fs to upgrade the ext2 to ext3 . Myself i dont like paragon or any windows partition program becuase i always have problems with them lol.
Or use Ubuntu.
Or use cyanogen's recovery image lol.

I used a thread in the development area, was able to do ir in terminal emulator. It was easy, then like other said I used CM 1.3.1 Recovey to make it EXT3. It was really simple. The thread had three parts to it so read carefully. I believe it is on the first or second page.
If you try to format in Paragon, it will ask you to reboot your computer to finish.
I've never had luck with that.
So try this:
Put your sdcard in your computer.
Using Paragon, delete all the partitions (make sure you apply the changes).
Then, one by one, create & format your partitions...
1. Create a Fat32 partition (7gb, or whatever size you want)
2. Apply that setting.
3. Create a Ext3 partition (use all the remaining space EXCEPT 24 or 32mb for the swap)
4. Apply that setting
5. Create a Linux Swap (NOT Linux Swap 2) with whatever is left.
6. Apply that setting.
7. Safely eject the card from your computer.
If you do it that way, you won't have to reboot.
I also am almost willing to bet that you are using an x64 version of Windows, right? Doesn't really matter though, this works for 32 or 64 bit.

SD card prepare tool[req]

hello all
just got an android and im still testing it. so please excuse my noobishness
question: is it possible to make a simple tool that runs on windows that would prepare and partition the sdcard with the three portions (fat32,ext2 and swap) and proper file system. is there something technically preventing such app of ever getting written. i know that some image burning software on widows can be used burn a cd/dvd that is not supported by the windows file system
if not, is it possible to write an android application to do all that. if so, anybody willing to write it
that would greatly simplify the process of installing the swap file enabled cooked roms. the current process is a bit messy
that is a great idea. I can do ext/2 or 3 with acronis disk director but I don't know how to do both and am nervous setting that up throught the phone although there is a really good guide on how to do that the phone.

How to partition your SD card from console (This requires the cyanogen recovery 1.3.1)
Example for my 8GB card.
Reboot and enter recovery (home+power) then go to console. Enter the below pressing "enter" after each line.
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with. Mine was 8166 read below if yours is different)
rm 1 (if you had more than 1 partition you would want to rm them as well)
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7526
mkpartfs primary ext2 7526 8038
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 8038 8166
quit
upgrade_fs
recovery
if your card isn't 8166 when you type print then you will need to modify those numbers to match your card size. You basically work back to figure out the totals. To figure it out, start with your cards total size. For example 8166 total Subtract 128 for swap (8038) minus 512 for ext (7526) the rest will go to fat32. Each partition starts where the other left off.

It's a good way but you should subtract 32 for linux-swap. 128 for linux-swap is WAY to big.

thanks thats exactly what i was talking about. i already partioned it using one of the guides. a simpler method cant hurt though
It is a great idea, the problem is that none of the tools for partitioning on windows are free. Maybe it would be possible to make a GUI that feeds commands to parted on the phone using adb? I don't know, I don't see what's wrong with booting in to gparted, seems like less troube and it's has a GUI.
Eh, 3-4 commands in Terminal isn't gonna kill anyone, but it might intimidate the noobs here and prevent them from fully enjoying their phone cuz they stop as soon as they see a wall of text.

You're completely right, if people never use it they will always be scared of the terminal =P
Bah, if everyone used linux they could just use gparted, another easy way.
I used the cmd line I quoted early to ready a 8gb sd card for apps2sd and I just left out the linux swap part and it worked MINT. But if your scared of the terminal, try using the apps2sd app on the market and that will get your sd card ready.

[Guide] How to install Android

As i see, more and more people are asking, how to install Android. And since previous tutorial is outdated, i will create new one.
So, first some theory. There are two types of releases: ones with ext2 partition and ones without. Second ones are much easier to install (just copy files to SD card), but ones with ext2 partition are faster and works overall better. All newer releases are with partitions.
So, how to install Android?
1. First we must prepare our SD Card. You will need 1GB+ Card. Some users are reporting that there are problems with several cards, so i suggest you stick to card you got with your X1 (it works 100%).
Now it's time to hook SD card to your computer. You can transfer files via X1, but I recommend getting a card reader, since file transfers will be more reliable then.
Before you begin, backup all your files on SD card. When partitioning, all data on your card will be deleted.
So, let's begin. Partitioning is fairly easy, but instead of writing this in text, i will show you video guide of creating partitions (thanks to user e334 for making this tutorial):
(Program in the video is Minitool Partiton Wizard. Grab home version from their page.)
2. After we properly make partition, it's time to download android build. Beware, that root of your SD card will be messy. There is a method to run it in folder (Andboot), but i didn't manage to make it right.
In the time of writing, (my opinion) best release is neopeek's SuperFroyo + v2c kernel. But releases are changing rapidly, since Android is still under development. I will try to update that page, but i suggest you always check the forums for some new releases.
As you can see, this release is in two parts (main release + kernel). But most of the time, there are releases with kernel included, so you don't have to download it separately. So anyway, download and extract main release, kernel and modules into root of the SD card (leave modules in .tar.gz file!).
After copying, use safely remove hardware before disconnecting SD card.
Now it's time for big final. Open file explorer on your X1, navigate to StorageCard\npkinstall folder and click install. If you have done everything right, your phone should go into "text mode" (black screen with bunch of text) and after about a minute, it should start displaying long list of files. That means it's installing android to EXT2 partition. When installation finishes, it will automatically reboot.
Your X1 Android is ready to use now. To launch android, open file explorer, navigate to \StorageCard and tap HARET. Again, it should start displaying text and after that logo should appear. When android appears to be loaded (start wizard pops up), leave it for another several minutes, so Android can initialize all background stuff it needs to.
Happy Androiding!
Frequently Asked Questions
How to return to Windows Mobile?
Simply restart your device. Android won't alter Windows Mobile or on board storage at all, so your windows mobile stays intact.
So, now my Windows mobile is running in background?
No. HARET will shut down Windows Mobile, so Android can have all the memory for himself.
Battery life is very short
Yes, android power management is not very good. But it's getting better, especially last days there were some major improvements in that area.
Camera/FM Radio/Something don't work
Android is still under development, so not all features are working yet.
I can't see my new EXT2 partition in windows
That's OK. Only linux sistems like Android and Ubuntu can see EXT2 partition. Although, you can install 3rd party software, that can add ext2 support to windows (google for "ext2 windows").
How big should i make ext2 partition?
EXT2 partition is system partition for Android. It needs to be big enough to fit all android system files in, but there is no point to make it too big, since data is stored to SD card anyway. Somewhere between 300 and 500MB should be fine. Make it 512 if you have space to spare or 300 if you are really low on SD card space.
I can't enter my SIM PIN!
PIN is currently not working in Android. Turn off PIN in Windows Mobile.

Nothing is wrong.
Actually, Windows can't read an ext2 partition, because it's a linux-based partition.
About the size.. i don't know, but i followed the tut' and put the same size. It works well.

Yep, i have realised that windows7 is unable to read that partition because i did install the android on it and everything went fine. My partition is 450mb large and its working normally. This is so much better then other xdandroid version beacuse with this build you can connect x1 and the pc via usb .

Is it necessary to leave some unallocated space on SD card as shown on video ? And what size of swap partition should be ?
I'm not sure why he left unallocated space, but it's not necessary.
For swap partition, I'm not even sure if android uses it. You can live without it.
hello
I need help
If i start the exe it boot.
But when it is finished it restarts and then there is windows .
Whats wrong ?
Have you done everything correctly? Delete everything and try again.
Also, what is your battery level?
I have successfully install Android with ext2 partition on my X1. But, when I boot to Android, it always hang.
Sometime it hang at the first boot (when Android ask me to configure Google account to sync), sometime it hang when I try to change Android setting, sometime it hang when I play music, but often it hang when I put Android on standby (I press the power button).
I use 4GB SD card and partitioned it into two partition, FAT32 2,5GB and ext2 450MB.
I have try two Android build : CyanogenMod 6.1 and X1-frg83-06112010. Both have the same problem. I also try replace the kernel (zImage) with sp3dev, but the problem still there.
The other thing I try was extract androidinstall.tar.gz directly to my ext2 partition, but Android still hang.
Do you ever encounter this problem? How to fix this?

[Q] Ready to Root?

Hi all.
I'm getting my NC in 2 days, and I'm looking to make sure I've got my ducks in a row so I can root it right away when I do get it. Here is what I have resource and hardware wise. Can any of you that have done this already tell me if I'm missing anything?
I have:
- Nook Color (Soon!)
- 16gb SD card
- Card reader
- Windows 7 PC
- This guide from Nookdevs (nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting)
- Patience
Am I missing anything? With what I have I should be able to sit down and root it as soon as I have the device, correct?
Thanks very much!
Sounds about right to me. I had the biggest pain in the ass trying to install ADB. It eventually started working, but I have no idea how or why haha.
Perfect. So there should be a USB cable in the box with the Nook then? I dont need to buy any cabling separately or anything?
If so I guess I just get to sit on my hands for a couple days!

Well, I am working nights this week, so if I *do* miss any hardware I'll be stuck until I can get to a store after the holidays.
Also, it's my first time rooting/jailbreaking anything so I want to make sure I'm aware of what I'll need. I'm not an idiot, (I work as a systems analyst) but it's still a new process for me.
I'd grab a linux bootdisk, if possible. The main reason is that after rooting the nook, it can be hard to get your sd card back to the proper size (it will register as a 40mb device). Win7 wouldn't see the remaining 7.96GB of my device, but ubuntu's Disk Utility did just fine.
That's weird... did the nook still detect the correct size? If you loaded more than 40mb of data on there then put it into the nook what happened? Once you detected the correct size in Linux were you able to access the full card from windows, or have you had to load all your data onto the card via linux since then?
Honestly I dont even really care if the SD card bricks after I'm done with it. I'm getting one just to root the device, (USB key or cloud storage for me thanks) and I guess for extra storage on the Nook itself afterwards. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll look into that solution if I need to.
you can't load more than the 40MB that windows sees, until you fix the partition table of the SD card. It may be due to the software I used to write the image (I think it was Win32 Disk Imager, recommended on nookdevs).
Either way, it's not hard to load up an Ubuntu liveCD, go to System -> Administration -> Disk Utility, select the SD Card, delete the partitions, and then create a new partition (FAT32, I believe), and then re-load it to the nook. It took less than 10 minutes to get my SD card back to the correct size.
Right, gotcha. Thanks much If I run into that I'll make myself a linux disk.
Just use the nook itself to format the microSD and it will read the proper size afterwards. It worked for me anyways.

Seconded. A linux distro is always handy, but unnecessary for the partitioning
I was going to mention the re-formatting of the SD card quirkyness since that was an issue for me, but I see that's been covered already
Oh, and patience is really not something you need much of for this. If you follow the instructions on nookDevs, it's a completely painless process. Seriously.. they've made it that frakkin' easy.

I am more interested in the note at the top
Note: For users who have failed at implementing the instructions below several times, the NookColor community reccomends that you use market and download adb wireless, and perform your adb work over the wifi connection to the NC rather than painfully trying to install and modify the drivers over and over. If you would prefer to do that in the first place rather than the instructions below, we won't be insulted.

Internal/external cards won't mount + No rom to boot

Hello, Finally made an account after lurking and flashing for a few months. This one is really stumping me...
SO.....
I was going to do a new install and wiped everything. I was trying to get the full size of my external 32gig card back after partitioning it for a app2sd setup and formatted it with disk utility(OSX). I ended up formatting the internal(I Know) by accident being a fast-click McGraw. I caught my mistake and formatted the external like originally planned. I think I formatted them to vfat.
After all this formatting, CWM and ADB won't mount my disks. CWM will not format them either because they won't mount. I have no rom loaded to boot into and I can't flash a new one because neither drive will mount.
I have been trying what seems like so many different things to include trying to make an EFI bootable Linux Live usb(didn't boot). This issue would probably be fixed by now if I wasn't using OSX but hey, it's what I have to work with. If anyone can help end my multi-day madness with a solution, great appreciation would be had.

Yea i understand im not a big of ms. Running Linux isn't really beneficial since you can do everything in osx. You can even compile but getting some packages is a pain. Anyways can you not push anything to / or does that partition not even exist? You could try mounting USB storage from recovery but i doubt that would work. We don't have hiemdal for this phone or you could use linux. Windows might be your only option find an iso somewhere if you don't want to register or download enterprise 7 by providing whatever the info it asks for, make it up.

Click to collapse
Use this command or something similar.
./adb push /file path of ROM /
But if USB works then when its mounted just put a ROM on drag and drop and flash it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Got it fixed!
While my Exhibit was down, I started using this Blackberry Curve I have as a backup. Decided to put my microSD in it and formatted it. I saw that it put the card back to its original storage space and got rid of the non-accessible partition. Loaded my backup onto it, CWM finally mounted it, and I flashed it.
