After i reset my phone this morning my apps seem to keep starting themselves up draining my battery down with me not using. after 2 hours i was down to 85% from full battery with using my phone for anything. It seemed like every app that used the internet or ran in the background would start up. I had to keep cutting them off every 5 minutes through the advanced task manager. The apps that would start are: ak notepad, alarm clock, browser, email, fbook, gmail, handcent, k-9, lock 2.0, market, and messaging. i understand why the email and gmail would open up but all the others that i could remember werent even used after the first time i noticed it would happen.
Any body know why my phone would do this?
well, lock 2.0 should be running because it is your lock screen and should be able to pop up as soon as you wake the phone, email and gmail are obvious, fbook is checking facebook for updates and such most likely through browser, if i remember correctly k-9 is an email client(correct me if i'm wrong) so that should be obvious too. market may be checking for updates and alarm clock might be running if you have an alarm set. i don't know what handcent is so i have no idea why it would be running, but 15% in 2 hours doesn't seem too bad i get about 5 hours out of a full battery, i would love to have the 15% in 2 hours as that would be much better than me current battery life. i may or may not be correct in my survey of what is going on with your phone but it seems logical in my mind.
Yea i thought that myself but it still seems like som eof the apps should close afterwards. Handcent is another type of sms client which i had used all the time for my texting. But even if i didnt use an app like messaging, calendar, and camera(are the other ones i forgot to post) shouldnt be running without me opening them up or an alarm or message downloading. which is not the case with some of them. unless apps running in the back should start when i cut it on?
Why don't you remove stock email if you have K-9? You can also replace AK notepad with something that doesn't autostart. Same thing for messaging programs. Voice Dialer can be removed if you don't use it. This is 4 programs already that you wouldn't have to worry about
There is nothing wrong. I was paranoid about this too before, I uninstalled task manager and my worries are gone haha. I didn't feel my G1 was getting bogged down speedy wise or anything. (hint hint, try the new SetCPU tool, its great and free for XDA users!)

Hello,
I've just recently switched from a Windows Mobile phone to the Hero, and there are a few features I miss from my old phone. I'm hoping that someone can recommend some apps to fill the gap; I've looked around on the forum and not yet found anything that seems like it would do what I want.
Calendar:
The calendar app that comes with the phone works great for everything except one simple feature - it displays all events on the monthly view with the same icon. My old phone used to have different icons for events in the morning, afternoon or 'all day'. This made it a lot easier to tell them apart at a glance. Edit: You also can't flick the screen to the side to scroll through days.
Mail:
This is just a minor annoyance. You can't swap between emails or email accounts by flicking the screen to the side.
Notifications:
If I've missed a call, received a text message or something of that sort, I'd like the phone to vibrate every 5 minutes until I acknowledge that I missed something. Currently all I can find is making the track ball glow, which isn't terribly useful if the phone is in my pocket.
If anyone can recommend some programs to fix those issues, that'd be great. (By the way, I'm using the Modaco custom ROM v2.2) Thanks!
Steve
For text notifications, grab SMS Popup from the Market. Brilliant little app imo
For the calendar get Pure Grid Calendar and turn on the Timeline option in settings

Missed call can repeat notifications for missed calls and texts. You can also set the vibration pattern.
For notifications, I use Missed Call. Seems to work well for missed calls and SMS messages which is all I need it for.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried SMS popup and it worked fine for texts, but as expected, it didn't do anything for missed calls. I've now installed Missed Call; I'll see how well it works tomorrow.

As for Pure Grid Calendar, that looks good. However it's a paid app; does it work well? The reviews generally were positive, but I'm paranoid about paying for something that doesn't work quite how I'd like it. In particular I forgot to mention that I need it to sync with Google Calendar - the guy's website suggests it does in some of the comments but doesn't specifically say so. Do you know if that's definitely the case?
Thanks again guys.
Pure Grid Calendar and it's cousin Pure Calendar are paid apps but you do get to use them for about 24 hours for free. If you then install you get a refund. My understanding is that this happens for all paid apps but perhaps someone who knows more about market can confirm.
As to syncing with Google calendar, again my understanding is that it is the device itself that syncs. In each calendar app, including HTC calendar, you just choose which calendars you want that app to display. The pure calendars are the same.
Personally I use Pure Calendar rather than the grid as it shows an agenda style widget in a 4x2 format.

I read that somewhere else as well, and then went to check the Market. That's indeed what the Google Terms of Service said; you can get a refund within 24 hours as long as you haven't tried downloading the program before.

Ah, that does make sense. That way each designer doesn't have to program their own syncing code.

I actually tried the Pure Grid Calendar yesterday, and I'm happy with it. I particularly like how it brings up a pop-up of the day's events if you tap a day.
I'll have a look at the Pure non-grid Calendar as well later, as I can't access the market from where I am at the moment. I assume its advantage over the basic Android calendar widget is that it displays multiple days?
Thanks to you both for your help.
Recurring Events
I am new to Android from WinMo as well. I am having trouble with recurring events. I work a rotating (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off; I KNOW!!! ) schedule for 2 wks with one workgroup then repeating for two weeks with another workgoup, then starting over.
This was not a problem with the calendar in my WinMo Tilt. I could "program" my work schedule in my phone and look out as far as I wanted to. I miss my calendar!
Am I missing something, or is the android calendar completely lacking in this area? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am on CM7 on my Milestone and have the SMS/launcher apps locked in memory (although I uninstalled the stock sms to just use handcent) and I am sick of missing messages to the point I have got in trouble because of missing messages.
What else can I do to stop this problem?
Just today I tried texting myself a number (quick way to get info to the phone and never even got the message.
I have been in the application settings and watched it randomly restart which I believe would miss any messages at that time. Since I heard before when either the SMS app or Laucher is loading that any messages will be lost.
Try using the default messaging apk inside CM7 Milestone. As Handcent uses much more RAM compared to the default one. Also, try minimizing widgets on your homescreen, and other apps that constantly run in the background (i.e. antivirus, CPU/RAM/system monitors, social networking apps, etc.)
I will think about trying the stock again but I remember it as being pretty basic.
I have no widgets at all and Facebook sync turned off only other app I know that runs in the background is my voice caller id, which I can't live without.
My email app is set to check the server every 15 minutes for messages but it is not doing it. The only way I can get email is if I manually push the sync button. What gives? Also, when I reply to an email, every word is capitalized and it's annoying. It's Like I Am Typing Like This. Is this phone a joke?

Do you have background data turned on? How about auto sync? What email app are you using? Stock rom?
Sent from my Thrill 4G using Tapatalk
Stock ROM. Phone is only a few days old. Auto Sync is on. Background Data is on. Using the program just called "EMAIL" that was on the phone. I think there is something else going on too. When the phone is idle, and charging with the supplied cord and plug, it takes 8+ hours to charge from 5% to full.
The capitalizing problem is an issue with Swype Keyboard. Doesn't happen with other keyboards, only Swype in the stock email program.
Could maybe a task manager or app manager be killing the email service?
Is there any way to fix the Swype capitalizing problem in the stock email program? I've tried SlideIt and a couple other keyboards.
My messages app STRAIGHT SUCKS!
i have no clue why, but everything I do it lags. I click in the text field and the keyboard takes forever to open (both stock Samsung keyboard and swype), i go too fast typing and it lags, possibly force closes, i try to send a message, it takes forever to add it to the list of responses and actually send, it's not even a signal thing, the app itself takes FOREVER and if I try to start typing before it posts or and send, it can freeze up and fc... if i even get a simple picture mms, my phone might force close and I've even had one time where my wife sent multiple mms in a row and it caused a hot reboot!
This is a stock app... i tried using stock keyboard, thinking that was it, no difference. I tried removing the image from the wallpaper on the messages background, that did nothing. ... there shouldn't be problems with either of those 2 things anyways! My gs4 did fine with similar STOCK features and aftermarket keyboards....
This is horrible.
Not rooted. Updated. Both Samsung keyboard and official swype. Both with in app custom picture background, preset color background and stock background.
I love everything else about this phone, but I'm about to return this thing, i shouldn't have to root to fix a stock app.
Anyone else have/had these problems? Any way to resolve them?
Just use Hangouts.

I guess that even though it was fine on my gs4, the note 4 didn't like the 13.5K text messages i restored the phone with my backup program... considering I have to record texts with an Ex, this us somewhat concerning, and a pain not have all texts backed up into one file and makes me wonder that despite allowing me to have "no limit"on my text messages, that it will eventually be too much and slow the program down to useless speeds again...
I just backed up all sms, set backup app as primary messages, deleted all sms texts, cleared data/cache/defaults on stock messages app, reset phone, reset stock app as default and boom, everything is flying again...
So if anyone ever gets a huge lag in their messages app, backup old messages if you want them, then delete all sms messages with a third party app cause if you want to keep your mms, deleting threads/convos with stock app will delete mms too if you haven't saved then some other way...
N suggest using hangouts? Really? The answer is fix what's broken, not leave it behind, that does no-one any good.
Similar situation but with knowledge of it

I've always had this problem whenever i restore my backed-up conversations, but in my case, it's only the first time i open a conversation i've recently restored from a backup, after that, it's just fine. I'm guessing this might be because it has to create some sort of cache the first time the system opens the entire conversation for you to read.
What i usually do... Get new phone, restore previous sms/mms, open each conversation for the first time and when i'm actually going to text, i get no lag or extensive wait for the messages to open-up. I hope that is also your case and you can deal with that LONG first wait.
PS- yes, i also NEED to keep a backup of my exes *sigh* those messages are my legal defenders ^_^
I never had an issue with restore but I delete the stock messeging app. Chomp works way better
BAD ASS NOTE 4
I really think my X527 (now running 21s and showing as X526) is a well made phone for the money but the lack of notifications is getting old now.
I've followed various guides but still fail to get notifications for emails in particular.
Yahoo mail never gets notifications at all.
Whatsapp seems to be the most reliable, followed by Facebook Messenger.
Between the extremes of WhatsApp and Yahoo Mail it's hit or miss.
Any recommendations?
Nobody cares about notifications or have simply acclimatised to not needing them then?

Try to whitelist the app from being cleared from memory. I made a post to that effect here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78137018&postcount=1027
Also, find the setting to allow apps to automatically start at boot and add the app to autostart list.
I'll try
I followed many guides but none worked
do you get notifications after a long period of inactivity?
Go to the phone manager app and exclude the required apps from battery optimisation
no changes
Go to permission, app auto launch and include the required apps
