Installing ROM using Vbox? - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

Hi all,
Sorry if this has already been covered.
Can anyone tell me if they have sucessfully installed a new ROM when running Windows through Virtualbox? My current OS is Ubuntu and from what i have read there are only limited sync functions with Linux.
Also can i install a ROM on a sim locked handset? My handset is in Orange UK, and i plan on keeping the Orange SIM in it. The only other handset i installed a ROM on was a vanilla TYTN so sim lock wasn't an issue.
Thanks in advance
GF

Yes , I've mate bit in different setup i have Vista 64bit so i can't use it flash my TOuch HD so i used my vmware xp to flash my phone and it work fine
so i hope is should for virtual box too

If ActiveSync works in your virtual environment, then it should go smoothly. You can also flash your TouchHd without vbox. Just copy (in massive storage device mode which ubuntu should recognize straight away) blacimg.nbh on the memory card and restart phone pressing vol down button.

i think it should work

Yes. If you run HardSPL or USPL you can install pretty much any cooked rom currently available to your phone. This bypasses all that locking crap

Why can't you use Vista 64bit to flash? Mine works perfectly.

Thanks for all your help. I've installed ActiveSync (WMDC) on the the Windows 7 beta but can't get it to recognise my handset through vBox. Possibly a Win7 issue or just my set up. I'll create a Vista box and try that.
@ Sidewinder - Can you run the HardSPL from flash or does it need ActiveSync?
Thanks again

I want to bring up the old topic because I have problems attaching my Touch HD to VirtualBox guest OS.
My host OS is Windows 7 and guest OS - Windows XP SP3.
HTC storage works pretty well I I'm selecting Disk Drive after connecting my device to PC.
ActiveSync also works well in my VBox. In that case I'm selecting Devices-> USB Devices -> Generic NDIS. The phone disappears from Host OS and appears in VirtualBox. Active Sync recognizes it and everything's OK.
But if I want to flash my phone I need to press vol down and then power on. After doing that I'm connecting my phone to PC. Host OS recognizes it as Qualcomm device. Serial changes to USB on my phone.
And then I'm trying to add that new USB device called "Qualcomm .. something" to vbox. When I'm doing it - vbox guest OS screen freezes and nothing happens.
Any ideas how to solve that? Do I need to install HTC drivers (modified drivers) for my Windows 7 host OS?

My PC is now mine. It is in domain and controlled by AD and GPO and bitlocker is ON. So I can't press F8 during boot to select "disable driver signatures". So the only option - flash it from Virtual machine in my case. Unless flash it from SD card (which I don't like).

Problem with Rom Upgrade with Windows Vista

Anyone got any problem when upgrading Rom on WIndows Vista and using the Windows Mobile Device Center instead of the traditional ActiveSync? It won't seems to connect to the device again once the device is restarted into the RGB screen [after the starting the Rom upgrade process]. After a few seconds, it got the connection error code on your PC. I soft reset the device and no upgrade has been installed. Any ideas?
I try removing the connect via USB check box and use Mtty to check the connections to my device. But after I have done that, the PC won't connect my device to my computer at all... hence, I can't get use Mtty to check the connections.
So I have no idea why this is happening on Vista. It works fine when I am using my old XP computer when I upgrade to the test ROM. Any suggestions will be appriciated. Thanks a lot of your help in advance.

Looking to upgrade to Windows Vista? You might just want to keep an XP partition on your machine, as ROM upgrades via the normal RUU client do NOT work from within Vista, due to changes in the way the OS accesses the device. This also prevents IMEI-check unlocks from working on Vista.

flahing using Windows 7 beta

Has anyone got this to work? No one mentions Win7 in the thread about replacing drivers to get Vista to work and don't want to mess up my ActiveSync (which works) if I have another choice? Any advice would be great!
P.S. I don't have a XP machine available, converted both to Win7 beta.
I would like to think there would be no problem you'll use the same WMDC as vista, but if you not sure flash the rom from the sd card, just rename it to blacimg.nbh (.nhb whatever? lol) and copy it to the SD main directory, once you enter bootloader follow the on screen instructions and it will flash the rom, I prefer this as it is faster then using the pc
Windows 7 is working excellent

Hello,
I have a Windows 7 latest build working. Just install WDMC (same version as vista mentioned above!)
It's working without any modifications and even much more stable then vista. It uses also less memory then Vista.
It is a very good choice apart from Windows XP -> Vista is the Beta version of Windows 7!!! ;-)
Many Thanks

I had nearly every build of windows 7 started with 6801 over beta 1 (7000) up to 7068 now and it worked on every version 32bit and 64bit! Just use the mobile device center ;-)
I've had no problems with win 7 synched to my Touch phone
No Problems with Win 7 no need to install anything to contact phone just use the mobile device center.
Ditto, works perfectly. You'll find Windows 7 installs some drivers the first time you connect your phone which may mean your flash times out while it waits. Just let the drivers install and the re-run the RUU and it'll start to flash
Running Windows 7 RC1 (7068) and no issues whatsoever
i couldnt HardSPL on windows 7 but other than that it works great with the HD.
I was trying to use USPL and that doesn't work (get USB in bootloader but the exe fails as can't find the usb port), guess I could try HardSPL but liked the idea of USPL. can you run USPL from the memory card?
did you change the usb drivers to the old ones? and turn off usb in active sync (on the pc)
I've done it on Windows 7 like the other users with no issues.

Install Vmware Workstation 6.5 and then create a new windows XP virtual machine.
Map you usb to the VM whenever you want to flash using USPL and not only. It works perfect!
ok thanks guys, sounds like using the old drivers will work, but Vmware sounds like a perfect solution will try that.

If you don't mind may I ask where you get the download for RC1 7068? I tried through MS site and got a license key but no download link, it said download was no longer available. Would like to try it.

This is funny.... I would love to know how you have RC1 when its not even been produced yet / hit testing stages of RC
To clear up some comments on Windows RC1. The leaked version of Windows 7 build 7068 in the license agreement says Release Candidate so people are thinking its RC1.
No biggie.
For those who want to upgrade from a previous version of Windows 7 Beta to Build 7068 understand that it WILL break your Windows Mobile Center 6.1 - when it tells you that its not compatible with the 6.1 version in the upgrade it means it. Don't mess with it. Install a fresh copy or you will not get it to work. Even if you download the 6.1 version to re-install.
For those who are installing the HTC for the first time it will say that it cannot find it. That's okay. Once it cannot find it - refresh your windows update and it will find a new driver. once that is installed it will try to install a another driver and it can't find that one. Refresh Update again and it will then find the final driver and Windows Mobile Center will recognize the Touch HD.
Guys, I have ActiveSync working (I am on Win7 7000 however) but was trying to flash (and yes, I had 'unticked' allow USB). This is what was failing. Can't find an XP disc so will try the older drivers as per the solution for Vista. Thanks for all the help.
search for VistaRUU on google for the older driver. It should work just fine under windows 7, I've used it to flash my friends' hermes.

upgrade rom htc hd with WM7 64bit

upgrade rom htc hd with Windows 7 64bit creates a problem? can do it without active sync?
edit: does not make me change the title
just copy the .nbh file in your sdcard root and rename it BLACIMG.nbh, turn off the phone and keep pressed vol down + power button, job done, happy flashing.
btw i'm using windows 7 64bit and works fine, you can flash without worries.
What you can try, is to place the HD in tricolor mode, when the device is off, push on the low sound button and keep it press while pushing the power button until you see the tri-color mode.
After that, connect your HD trought USB to your PC. Wait until the PC have load the drivers.
And Run the rom upgrade program "as an administrator".
Normally, it should work.
ALF it works also the old way, just run the RuuWrapper that comes with the rom and it will ask for administrator privileges, press next and update the rom. This method needs active sync.
W7 64 bit and touch HD
I have all my computers with windows 7 64 bit. I have no problem sync the HD, or flash. I have not seen anyone comment about it, so here you go- from trying it, no problems at all. Actully, it works better than it was with XP.

usually use the USPL but does not work

depend by the SD ....
Please optimize the head of this Thread from "with WM7 x64" to "via Win7 x64". I was really confused cause I wondered if I could find an early WM7 (Windows Mobile 7) in an 64 bit edition in here. Maybe you could change the title to not confuse any more people? WM7 -> Win7!

you know the USPL 2.5 works with Windows Vista?
can someone give a full "step-by-step" to perform the ROM upgrade successfully?
Hi, I referred to this web page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3625567&postcount=272
It does not sound as easy as this topic. I tried to upgrade the driver, wceusbsh.sys, Windows does not allow it (said does not match the manufacturer), and the steps given do not work at all. What other software is needed? Please provide link to get them.
I am trying to upgrade from WM6.1 to TOUCH_HD_WWE_21882_231109 (Duly maryone). Thanks for helping. I am using Windows 7 64-bits.
There aren't problems with Windows 7 64-bit and rom flashes. Also, your thread has absolutely nothing to do with Windows Phone 7 so please correct the erroneous subject.

are you sure you understand the issue?
Win7 driver for HTC USB is NOT compatible with those RUU Loader.
And you need to restore the XP one which DOES NOT have digital signature.
Win7 users need to press F8 before booting windows and choose disable signature check (something like that) option. And you will be able to install the unsigned driver for flashing.
So, please correct your erroneous statement.

Windows 7 and Flashing

Made a quick guide on how to flash your phone using Windows XP mode on Windows 7. ( For People that cant do it on there Windows 7 due to driver problems )
1. Download Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
2. Install first Virtual PC then take a reboot and install Windows XP Mode.
3. Do a Windows Update on the Windows XP Mode, and make sure that .Net framework is installed.
4. Download Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/microsoft/activesync-download.mspx
5. Connect the phone to the computer , once that is done you can click on the USB menu above your Windows XP Mode.
6. Attach the devices that you need by clicking on them. (Make sure that the phone is in the bootloader if you are going to flash it)
I have tested it on my phone a couple of times worked every time.
Hope it might help someone as it helps me a lot
Thank you Giland

Thanks for your guide Giland, but I've been using Windows 7 and used same method as described by mezolezo, i.e.
1- Reboot your HD device on the bootloader
2- plug the Cable till you see the USB written in the bottom of the screen
3- you can Flash your HD now
Also the Dummies Guide also provides a detailed step-by-step guide for flashing including how to downgrade drivers for Windows 7 so 'usb' is displayed in bootloader
Still I appreciate your efforts and hope to here more from yourself
Thanks

Using windows 7 64b and i just make an active sync connection and use the given software with the roms... Only had driver issues while Windows 7 was stil on earlier RCs.
You don't need do that! Simply boot windows 7 using disable driver <something> lol! Update drivers and flash! I use this method and i never have problems!
What do you mean with upgrade driver?
Where can I find the driver?
This my friends it is very very complicated.I am sure it is working but..
If you have windows 7 install windows mobile device centerr, plug in your HD and FLASH.OR you may copy the BLACIMG.NBH to the card and FLASH.
NO NEED TO OVER COMPLICATE YOUR LIFE.
Thank you anyway for the tutorial.
Was just a test since @ work the mobile center wont work no mater what i try.
So i found this complicated way to do it and its working
I did not want to offend you in any way,i am using windows 7 for a long time now and always flashed using Windows mobile center.
I plug in the HD. When asken select the Active sync mode, then start the RUUWrapper and tihs is it, the rest is his job.
And it worked always.
But i still preffer the card method.
found out my problem here , guese what it was forefront anti virus that did it all
I just disabled it and then i reinstalled the Windows Mobile Device Center.
i simply flash my rom on my windows 7 ultimate as i used to do on Vista. Why bother complicating one's life
USPL 2.5 and Windows 7 Ultimate
I only flash via USPL 2.5 and I haven't been able to flash in windows 7 ultimate I have tried all the guides and have not been successful, I came across this guide thought I found some information that would really help me because I also set-up this virtual PC on my machine, only to find out that there is a lot of different ways to flash my phone in Windows 7, so my question is this
1) Is anyone of you guys Flashing using USPL2.5 in Windows 7 Ultimate?
2) If YES, could you explain to me how get it working on my machine?
Thanks.

X1a +Windows 7 X64 + Windows Mobile Center

Hi,
I am trying to use activesync with:
1.-STOCK X1a from rogers
2.- Windows 7 x64 ultimate
3.- Windows Mobile device center 6.1.6965
Windows do not recognize the X1 in activesync mode ( even without the check in advance) and it does not work as a disk device.
What driver should be use by windows 7 for the x1a? is there an how to describing the procedure I should follow?
regards,
Daluv
Weird.
I have Xperia X1i and i'm using Windows 7 64-bit Professional edition.
When I connect my device to the computer, windows 7 recognize an unknown device & will check online for drivers & install them immediately.
But maybe you should connect your X1 & run Windows Update, maybe this will help
Already tried that. thanx.
can you show me a device manager screenshot with the x1 selected?
thanx
hence why I am looking for a more formal approach to make sure every step is fine...

could be the usb drivers on the pc

maybe look for new drivers for your motherboard on the manufacturers site or the manufacturers of the chipset the motherboard use
of cause after you verified that windows mobile device center->mobile device settings->connection settins
got usb checked on
yeah usb is check on in windows mobile device center.

That's exactly what is you issue. You need the drivers for your motherboard chipset to get everything working correctly, and this can be a big issue on Seven 64 bits. This is the main reason why I had to use Seven 32 bits (changing my pc was not an option at the time I bought my Seven licence).
Ok i will try to solve that first. thanx.

OH yeah I don't love Dell neither.
But did it work with Vista 64, because Vista & W7 should work (almost) the same.
But most PC does have 2 USB slots in the front of their tower & 4 at the back.
Did you try one of the 4 on the back side?
If it doesn't help, I would say, maybe you should install & another OS besides W7 64-bit
cant change my work PC... I only use linux at home so I have 0 problem.
