Orange Branded HD - Upgrade ROM - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

Hi Guys
Ive done a search but cant find anything specific so im starting a a new thread.
I have a Touch HD which I got through Orange UK.
Rom version sis: 1.19.61.1 WWE
At the moment im told that I cant receive any updates directly from the HTC site and orange dont really seem to care about offering a good after service.
So my option is to flash my phone with a new ROM, however which version to go for is my biggest question and I really dont have any idea. I understand the flash proceure. WIll any ROM allow updates from HTC site?
Thanks
Craig

hi
i also have a uk branded orange touch hd
i flashed it with the latest official rom from htc (the one that needs a serial number to download and the orange serials dont work)
just use a serial provided in the offical rom upgrade thread to download the rom from htc and use uspl 2.5 to flash it
i used uspl 2.5 to upgrade the rom
all info can be found using the search fuction on this forum
i also made a dump of the phone before i flashed it, just need someone to rebuild the .raw files to a flashable rom
hope this helps
math

Nice one Math, that helps a lot! Will give this a go over the weekend.
Craig

Ok, where do we start? Which ROM you choose is really a bit like asking what car should I choose to buy. The choice is entirely yours based on what you want and what you like.
I think the first question to ask yourself is what do you want? What Windows Mobile OS do you want? WM6.1, WM 6.1 with Touch flow, WM 6.1 with the latest version of Touch flow or WM 6.5 Beta. I'm sure there are more but lets keep it simple.
WM 6.1 or 6.5? HTC Touch Flow or not? What is your native language as you have nothing set in your profile etc?
May I suggest you have a look through the first few posts of each of the ROM threads for this month and see what takes your fancy. If you ask ten people you will get ten possibly different answers.
Look at peoples signatures and see what most people use as most display what current ROM they are using. Maybe try a few, but I suggest use the safest route and follow the instructions to the letter.
Its always a matter of personal opinion but I like Duttys current WM6.1 with TF3D XT3. It's the latest and well tested with fewer bugs than the stock ROM from HTC (IMHO) and is based on the latest technology from the next gen HTC phones.
Do your research and enjoy!

Yes, the choose is your, but as an Orange user myself. I was bored with the official HTC Orange Rom and decided to flash my rom. Did manage to keep the back up on original rom in cause of warranty reason. I have try quite a lot of cook rom the only problem I had was mainly with battery life wasn’t good and will not last for a day or so. Since with this rom, HD|ROM||WWE|| ** EnergyROM HD Series 21042 - Final Topaz Manila ** || Build 40909 || man!! The software and battery life is incredible. Yes I would recommend to you

where did u get this rom from? link?

couple of newbie questions. I also have orange phone ...
If I upgrade to the latest HTC rom will I loose all my programs installed in the phones memory?
Will I loose my programs/they stop working (e.g. Tomtom) that have been reigstered with the phone (in add/remove programs) on my memory card?
Can I restore everything from a backup (sprite) ?
Is there any way of goign back to the older ROM if I need to send my phone back for warranty reasons?
Thanks
James

Thanks for info. Just to clarify a couple of things..
Will my sprite backup restore all programs and settings to the new rom version?
How can I backup my existing ROM? I'm guessing the official ROM is a HSPL?
Thanks

USPL and HSPL these are different method of putting new ROM to your phone.
you will find more information in here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone_Flash1
with this method you can get a backup of your current ROM

Thanks again. I never thought it would be so complicated. I thougth someone would have created a GUI for this stuff, its amazing what they have GUI's for these days and this is still command line.
Still unsure as to wether I can restore my sprite back up after going to 1.56 rom though. With the amount I have installed its probably not worth the effort for now.

Going back to an older ROM

Okay I am a newbie and I installed the Mr Clean rom which is fine but how would I install the previous rom I had witch was the one from the HTC website? Basically all I am tring to do is change my splash screen and I have no idea how but I want the old rom but it doesn't seem to want to let me roll it back.
OK newbie, try searching the forum for your solutions first - you will be surprised what you might find. This took me less than a minute to locate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=52768
Basicly Faria has put together a bunch of different splash screens which will install in exactly the same fashion as a new ROM would. As it only loads a new slpash screen you will not lose any data. You will also be able to keep the Mr. Clean ROM but have a different splash screen. There are at least 2 HTC splashes listed and the one that I had a quick look at has a preview so you can see which one you prefare before you do the install.
Enjoy...
But is it possible to go back to an older/different rom once you install Mr Clean rom? I currently have a K-jam running the lattest rom, and was thinking about trying Mr Clean rom just to see how it behaves. The only think stopping me is what if I don't like it! Would it be possible to revert back to my current rom?
Can't see any reason why it shouldn't work. As far as I know none of the home cooked ROMs available on the forum have a function that does a compare between the existing and intended ROM versions and prevents any downgrading.
As to whether you will like the newer version, it is hard to see why you wouldn't. Mr Clean's version is spot on if you want the latest OS, the best Radio ROM and a very light extended ROM and with you changing your splash screen to one you like you should be sorted. All you need is to install whatever cab files you need for performance tweaks or network settings.

Well it doesn't! :S Once you use Mr Clean rom you can not go back to the official Kjam rom! My only problem with the Mr Clean rom is that there is somewhat increased consumption compared to the rom I had before! Oh well! I guess I'll just have to get used to it!

Why can't you go back? I've run every ROM sumitter has released. Over the weekend I installed the Mr. Clean ROM . Put on the PDA Mobiz version yesterday. I just went back to the original Cingular 1.08 successfully this morning to double-check this response. IPL, SPL, GSM and OS reflecting changes each time. Now I'm going "back" to sumitter's test2. If you unlocked you SID/sim initially you shouldn't have any problems regarding this. faria documented the procedure back in April.
(yes I love flashing my phone)
I can't believe that the Kjam is that different.....

First you need to download and install Button's 1.05 at ftp://xda:[email protected]__RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_101_11210_WWE.exe . Make sure to allow the extended ROM's to execute. All problems solved as Pinhead said.

Questions regarding Flashing/Dumping ROM on MDA Compact V

Hi, been looking through the various sections of ROM development forum, and have a couple of questions. I am new to this Windows based phones.
1) When I dump the ROM, does this Backup the ROM, radio and Protocol, or do you have to do them individually? Basically can I put the MDA Compact V back into its complete original state if I dont like the new ROMS?
2) Has anyone tried Flashing the Compact V, if so, any improvements?
Hoping some of you experts can help out a noob!
2) You need HARDSPL installed. Then you can flash any topaz rom on it. Trust me, you don't want to go back to the t-mobile rom.
Let us know how you get on, i'm thinking of doing the same thing
I dumped my rom from the mda compact v but I havent put it back together as nbh yet. Downloading the topaz kitchen to do so.
It is always a good idea to dump your rom before flashing a new one. If your phone develops a fault t-mobile will not accept responsibility if there is a custom rom on there and they will likely tell you that your warranty has been invalidated. Although the t-mobile rom is awful is always good to have it backup up just in case of the worst.
Saying that I didnt backup the radio though and I updated that to the latest last week
EDIT: To answer the question yes there are improvements with running custom roms. I have not moved to 6.5 yet as I have a heavily customised uDK 6.1 rom and cannot be bothered to move to 6.5 and do all the customisations again. There 6.5 rom appear to be slightly buggier from what I read but it does have its advantages over 6.1.
Backup the t-mobile rom and move to the custom roms just make sure you follow the instructions carefully
Thanks for the replys.
Pauloke: I have backed up the ROM (parts.raw) and I have also got the kitchen, but I really have no idea what I'm doing. Worst case, I have a copy anyway. The kitchen instructions get quite techy very quickly and they soon lose me. Is there any way of getting a copy of the shipped ROM online?
Cheers

One way is to check the website of your provider. Sometimes you find the ROM (as an update) there.
Another way is to check the WIKI TOPAZ cooked ROMs page. By chance you find your ROM there.
Ohh man i must be rly stupid, why i cant figure out how the @#% i can dump my rom :S This dumprom tool is supposed to extract an already backed up rom right? i'm really confused :/

If i install a 6.5 rom can i revert back to 6.1 htc rom?

Just in case i dont like it or am i stuck with cooked roms thereafter?
Yes, Once installed HardSPL, you can put on any rom you wish,
This means, that you can flash Official Roms (Perhaps to change language) or Cooked Roms, As long HardSPL is on your device, you can reflash any Rom that is built for your device
Since HardSPL cannot be removed by flashing a rom (you can remove it with the removal utility) you don't have to worry about Official or Cooked roms ;-)
Hey!
Thanks for such an informative and quick reply!
I'm just thinking about my warranty etc and also whats the best 6.5 to try whilst i have your help?
Does Dutty not do Tpaz roms?
Cheers

W.r.t warranty, if you ever have to send your phone in for repair under warranty, be sure to remove hard SPL with the removal tool first
Thanks mate, whats the 6.5 rom you are running like? is it fast? any benefits?

Dutty does not work on the Topaz (yet? xD)
I still use a highly (self) customized stock rom,
If you want to use a 6.5 rom I'd recommend Tom's or udK's roms.
And indeed, if you ever need to return your phone, Try to flash a stock rom & remove HardSPL from your device, and you should be ok ;-)

I am running Tom Codons' latest 6.5 ROM - Biggest benefit to me is that windows media player appears to have more video codecs than before - I can now play vids that would not play on 6.1.
Toms ROM is genreally fast and bug free and he includes a registry editor for your convenience!
Ok great thanks guys!
As HTC dont supply a stock rom are the original rooms on the wiki mirror the same?

The ROM's which names start with RUU... are official ROM's from HTC. The question is if you find the original ROM that is on your TOPAZ right now.
If it is not listed yet, you might not be able to get back to your original status once u flashed a cooked ROM.
A possibility is to dump your original ROM and try to create the files for reflashing it. I never tried by myself, but I see in the threads of "TOPAZ ROM development" that it is not that easy.
At the end it's your decision to accept the risk.
Great thanks!
Well im flashing with Toms 6.5 rom and yeah i have hardspled
Cheers guys!
oh and i have a tomtom 7 version, what sat nav you all preferring? need to get an 'extended' version ideally to play with
I had some voice problems with tomtom, So I use iGo8
what did that cost ya?
Not that much *rolling eye's*
Although tomtom is fine with the fix...
Go with Garmin GMXT just google for the K*y Gen and procedures.
Looks like garmin dont like built in gps? at least not what i tried!

I was previously using Tomtom but had the voice command cut-off problem and the fix available here didn't fix it.
@ Garmin XT users,
I don't know that particular GPS software,
And have 2 questions about it,
1) Does it have Dutch voices?
2) Does it have a Belgium only map?
If you could answer these questions I would be very happy,
Cause iGo8 isn't the best there is either

Yes, the Netherlands is listed in the voice options. I don't think a Belgium only map is available. I have the Europe map with mine.
aww, thats sad, I only use a Belgian map, So I don't need all the others...
Well I'll look into it ;-)
Thanks for your reply!
*edit* It seems like they have Benelux maps... Which is Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg

Well just get an original 6.1 HTC ROM and flash this in the same way as getted the 6.5 on the blackstone.. As the HTC stock roms are also shipping with the radio it will also up or downgrade our Radio.
Hi,
Just check the website of HTC for the latest Blackstone rom.
Before downloading you have ot enter a serial number...
It's behind the battery
And make a backup of your personal stuf because your phone will be totally overwritten.
Personal I use PPC Pim Backup, just google and install the backup on the storage card.
Good Luck

[Question]Stock rhodium rom with WM6.5 and sense 2.5

Is there a stock WM6.5 sense 2.5 rom for the rhodium? Ive been searching but i cant find one. I need a Dutch (NLD) or English rom.
Thanks to all.

Yes, Theres WWE and some other versions. But trust me, you wont like it. I am on Energy and just switch to stock to see the difference, And I found myself back with an energy rom within one hour. But still you are interested, maybe can give you a link by tomorrow....

Do you have HardSPL on your phone already ? Sorry if you already know this, but you won't be able to use an official HTC ROM unless you've got a non-carrier-branded phone (i.e. a plain HTC phone) and it's of the correct region. Or unless you install HardSPL.

I must say, that stock ROM with sense 2,5 is really horrible. It is incredibly slow and unstable and it was the reason that I flashed to energy ROM which is more that 4 times faster and more stable.....

You have to adjust the battery and backlight settings, plus tweak using the advanced configuration program NRG has cooked in. Then it will get decent battery use.
Read the first three posts of the NRG ROM thread to get the download links.
